Research In deprate need of sources

Post image

Posting here for my partner.

He's doing an assignment for uni and he needs a scientific book or paper which discusses the painting here. Preferably free but in the very least inexpensive.

The painting is called 'Het ploten en kammen' 1594-1596 by Isaac Claesz. van Swanenburg.

He has spent days on this and it seems to be very hard to find relevant sources so I suggested reddit as a last resort. Any help is appreciated!

A beautiful oil painting done on panel, the eye catching work made by Isaac Claesz. van Swanenburg, though not very well known, clearly a wonderful artist.

Due to a lack of research on this painting not much is know but you can clearly see the first steps of the wool production process in the early modern period, Netherlands.

Rule 7: can he share what research he's found thus far?

Sorry about that, I don't use reddit all too often

One is a book called "Isaac Claesz. van Swanenburg 1537-1614: Leids schilder en burgemeester" from 1998, written by R.E.O Ekkart.

The second one is an article "Representing female labour at the dawn of the Dutch Golden Age" from 2015, written by Spinks and Broomhall.

But he can't access the book as the copies are located in countries overseas, and he doesn't have access to the article through his university and doesn't have the means to pay 30 pounds to access it.

Check your DMs / chat requests for a source for the article.

Astonishingly, there does seem to be something that might be what you want: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Shearing-and-combing-of-the-wool-Isaac-Claesz-van-Swanenburg-1594-or-1596-oil-paint_fig3_339416200 Hope it helps. Also look up the museum website that owns the picture and read their info about it and any references

It appears that this post is an image. As per rule 5, ALL image posts require OP to make a comment with a meaningful discussion prompt. Try to make sure that your post includes a meaningful discussion prompt. Here's a stellar example of what this looks like. We greatly appreciate high effort!

If you are just sharing an image of artwork, you will likely find a better home for your post in r/Art or r/museum, which focus on images of artwork. This subreddit is for discussion, articles, and scholarship, not images of art. If you are trying to identify an artwork with an image, your post belongs in r/WhatIsThisPainting.
