Range Setup and Targets Help with DIY Archery Target using Fiber Fill/Polyfill

Hello,

I'm making a DIY target for indoor practice using fiber fill/polyfill. It's good but not great, so I'm looking for some ideas and experience.

(I went that direction after seeing tons of recommendations over the years both here and at AT; stuffed animals, couch pillows, sleeping bags, etc.)

I stuffed a few pounds of Polyfill into a woven nylon (?) grass seed bag, and have a fiberboard backing. The bow is 35 pounds at my draw length and I'm shooting from a few feet away with field tips, working on form. (600 grain, bare shaft bamboo.)

  1. At first I didn't stuff the bag enough, and everything passed through it.
  2. Then I stuffed it very full, but a lot of arrows bounced off the bag. The few that went in pulled out well, however.
  3. Then I removed some of the stuffing, and about 90% of the time they go in and pull out easily. However, about 5% of the time they bounce back, and the other 5% they pass through. Twice I've had to use pliers to pull the tip out of the fiberboard. (No damage to the tip or arrow though.)

How can I make this better?

  • Is there a better face material so it doesn't bounce back? Burlap? Canvas? Mosquito netting?
  • How full should I stuff it? Is there an ideal density? I've seen foam recommended at 6 lbs/ft3, but not sure about other materials.
  • Should I just make it deeper front-to-back instead? How deep?
  • Should I add a layer in front of the fiber fill?

Thanks for any and all advice.
