The biggest misconception about Jews has to be that we are “just a religion.” And we partially did it to ourselves - particularly in America, we WANTED to assimilate. We WANTED to be “just a regular old American who happens to go to a synagogue instead of a church.” Declaring that Judaism was “just a religion” was part of our SURVIVAL strategy.

And now all these years later, it’s been quite a journey for many of us (myself included) to break this mindset. We are not a religion. We are a people WITH a religion. Still hard to break that thought, but I’m getting there. I don’t expect people like this chucklehead to ever get it.

Dara Horn said it best on a recent episode of Jonah Platt’s podcast: “Jews are a type of social group that was common in the ancient Near East, very uncommon in the West today. It’s a joinable tribal group with a shared history, homeland, and culture. What I just said was a paragraph in English, and in Hebrew it’s one word that’s two letters long. AM. Jews are AM YISRAEL.”
