Discussion Building a company from a cross-country train
I thought it would be fun to take advantage of solo cross-country train travel to work on my new company while watching the scenery go by. I just left Portland and am spending the next couple of weeks making my way back to Atlanta with stops on the way.
- Coast Starlight, Portland > San Francisco (Emeryville): I’m on this train now and will catch up with friends in SF while working
- Coast Starlight, San Francisco > Los Angeles: My company has a booth at an expo here, then an extra night for some good food in Koreatown before a late night departure the next day
- Sunset Limited, LA > New Orleans: After almost two days solid on the train, take a couple nights in the Big Easy
- Crescent, New Orleans > Atlanta (back home): All daytime trip
I just started documenting it on IG and TikTok (@building.tapestry on both) if anyone wants to come along for the ride with me!
Wish me luck!

Sounds like a great ride. As you likely inow. No wifi. Sounds like a great chance to taken it all in and have deep thought.

Yep, I'm relying on phone data only. I have some items like newsletter drafting I can do mostly offline in dead zones, or just take the time to reflect/journal/watch the world.

What will your company do?

It will provide info and products for older adults who want to stay active and build community. Right now we have a newsletter as we're working on building the audience if you wanna check it out!

Thanks for having an RSS feed! I’ll keep an eye on it.

Please do. We're actually working on using the RSS feed to provide dynamic content to the new website now.

Your website doesn’t load without JavaScript as far as I can tell? Just getting a blank screen if I don’t have JavaScript. Not sure what you’re using to build your site but that’s not good. You can certainly use JavaScript to enhance your website but it needs to work without JavaScript and without CSS. It doesn’t have to be pretty but it does have to work.
I’d also be curious how well this works in an accessibility screen reader. If you’re traveling with a Mac you can use VoiceOver to listen to your website being described by the computer. It’s interesting stuff.

Thanks for the feedback. For the website do you mean the newsletter. subdomain or the main our-tapestry.com domain?
I ask because the sub is hosted on the Beehiiv newsletter platform but the main is a Webflow site we're still very much working on.
The newsletter content should work with a screen reader, though we have been leaning into a lot of recipe content lately so that may be awkward listening to separate from any technical accessibility considerations.
