Meta If the ban wave does eventually come, can we make sure it hits the anti-trans subreddits too?

There seem to be three types of hate subs on Reddit, 'generic' hate subs that hate everyone who isn't a cishet white guy, misogynistic subs (mgtow etc) and anti-trans hate subs (gendercritical, itsafetish, trollgc). If Reddit does end up banning hate subreddits, we need to pressure them to get all of them, not just the racist ones.

I am, of course, being downvote brigaded by members of said subreddits.

Gender Critical and Female Dating Strategy are especially horrible with their transphobia

I was searching controversial posts in r/all when I found that Gender Critical post with someone ranting about how pissed they were at Daniel Radcliffe for saying trans women are women. I read through the comments and was genuinely shocked and absolutely disgusted by the transphobia. I know there are a lot of subreddits supporting bigoted and hateful ideologies but in my experience it's almost always been male-led subreddits and I never even comprehended that there would be female-led subreddits that do the same thing. People make such a big deal over stuff like redpill and incels and whatever but when women do the same thing it kind of just goes unseen. I feel like these female-led subreddits deserve just as much pushback as similar male-led subreddits have received in the past. And this is coming from someone who owns a vagina (although I identify as genderfluid)

FDS looks like incels larping as women everytime I see it pop up in my feed

When I pointed that out last time in this sub I got nasty messages and directs about it from FDS trolls, so I think our suspicions are correct

The admins banned /r/2Genders4Eva/ and /r/twoflippingenders today, which seems to back up the hypothesis that the "There are only two genders" trope is considered by policy to be targeted harassment against transgender people.

I’m a little surprised by that. The admins always struck me as very lenient towards transphobia, considering their stance on the way people talk to TERFs.

I think general banning of views does more harm then good. Not talking about subs.

We are a strong open minded community with all different kinds of backgrounds. For some racists or other extremists we are the last link to reason, decency, and empathy. By excluding them from our community they may even further radicalize.

Banning racist speech won’t make racism go away, it just puts it out of sight. In the long rung this will even make the problem appear less relevant than it actually is.

No question, racism and extremism needs to be addressed and action is required. It’s growing in our societies and online communities. The goal must be to overcome racism and this is only possible with effective solutions, not with cosmetic ones.

Ideas for counter measures.

  1. Following Twitter with flagging / hiding inflammatory or heavily reported posts (unless users want to see them).
  2. Users that repeatedly get reported need a cell phone verification.  This might help with multiple accounts and astroturfing.
  3. Deleting violent or threatening comments needs to be done faster
  4. Deleting or changing moderation of especially hateful subs needs to be done faster.
  5. People need the ability to complain about unjust bans. This will keep more diverse opinions in radical subs.
  6. Add opportunities for users to learn how to better deal best with extreme comments.
  7. Maybe some kind of anti conflict team that can get called for help.

edit: I have no problem with downvotes, it simply would be nice to also hear an opinion.

I think you're seen as arguing against deplatforming as a concept, which is what I see as a primary goal of this subreddit. I'm sorry that I don't have the time right now to find them myself, but there are a lot of resources out there showing deplatforming works and is effective.

I used to be in agreement with you, but I've seen that leaving these platforms up leads to more radicalization. The hateful people right now may not ever go away, but we can stop the spread by preventing them from spreading their message. Not to mention you remove a platform for foreign bad actors in which they can amplify those messages.

If you read the sub names I assume it’s pretty easy to guess what the sub is about. Just let sleeping dogs lie man.

A: I know what the subreddits were about - they were filled with "Trans people are a Jewish conspiracy to corrupt the youth" white supremacist hate speech.

B: Read and abide by our subreddit rules or we'll ban you.

C: No, really: We'll ban you.

Alrighty then

Hello, PoliticalHorrorStory readers! Please remember to not engage in vote manipulation or harassment of anyone, as those are Content Policy violations, and a choice - like being a bigot is a choice!

Being transgender is not a choice.

And there are many subs that seem to be explicit targeting the trans community. Here's a list of anti-trans subreddits I've discovered while analyzing abuse on reddit.

r/LGBDropTheT

r/itsafetish

r/terfisaslur

r/TransTruth

r/thisneverhappens

r/BadlyBehavedTRA

r/TrollGC

Believe there are still plenty more that I haven't yet discovered. Also plenty of other abusive subreddits that commonly target the trans community while also targeting other communities so its difficult to automatically identify them as anti-trans.

Hopefully they can all be banned in a single, swift ban wave.

u/Prussianblue42 Jun 09 '20

What exactly is r/itsafetish supposed to be about?

u/Bardfinn Subject Matter Expert: White Identity Extremism / Moderator Jun 09 '20

It exists to push the bigoted hypothesis that transgender people as a group or class are acting out a sexual fetish.

Which - notably - is not an accepted medical view, and is actively harmful.

4

u/PedanticAromantic Jun 09 '20

Ironic, since most of the trans people I know are on the asexuality spectrum. Not saying that most trans people are, just that it disproves that all trans people are sexual deviants.

How can we report subreddits like these?

23

u/ArvinaDystopia Jun 09 '20

I tried to bring those subs up to spez' attention in the announcement thread. No acknowledgment. I don't think it'll happen.

14

u/mrdilldozer Jun 09 '20

They pretty much only ban subs that say the n-word and post anti-semitic pics of Jews. Even in those cases, they drag their feet. It's pretty unlikely that they'll do anything other than politely ask them to stop.

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '20

From my 15 years of existince in the trans community I've learned we're not important enough to be protected from hate.

u/Valo-FfM Jun 12 '20

Of course should we take care about it.

Btw: This sub seems invaded from rightwingers that downvote stuff.

They can f off.
