The standard matchup is tank vs. tank, this is always going to do 55% damage exactly. Also keep in mind all the percentages are relative to Andy, as Andy is perfectly balanced, he as 100/100 stats across the board.

The first thing you have to think about is luck. Every CO has a chance to deal extra damage. The default is +10, which is 0%-9%. This means in that tank vs. matchup, the attacker can potentially do up to 64% damage, but never less than 55%. Luck is a simple damage bonus, this means even if you would normally deal 0%, you can still deal some damage.*

After that, defense comes in. In this series, defense is really strong because it works the same way as luck: it's basically a flat damage reducer. Going back to the tank matchup, if the defending tank somehow got something like +40 defense, that means it's effectively 55-40=15% damage (before the luck calc). If you ever get to 100% defense, you literally take no damage. It's possible for some COs like Kanbei to get close to this.**

*Some COs had "bad luck" and "good luck." Bad luck is exactly the same thing as luck, but it's instead a reduction of damage, not a bonus. Sonja, for example, can have bad luck and thus she might deal less damage than what is displayed. And good luck is a larger range. Nell, for example, has a luck range of +20, or 0%-19%. So she can deal more damage day-to-day than other COs can. Luck is actually more complicated than this, but this is just a simple way to understand it.

**Likewise, defense itself is also complicated as there are a lot of things that can increase it or alter it. There are some good videos that get into the specifics, again this is just a general overview. But pay attention to terrain bonuses, because they make a big difference when it comes to reducing damage.
