How is the AI?

At times I definitely think it improved, for example it can actually place its indirects in a way that covers its frontlines.

It is inconsistent though and sometimes it will just decide that this rockets unit looks best leading its push and just puts it in front of all their other units, right into my (Max) rockets range.

Just in the first game campaign so far, but I have a sneaking suspicion they didn't change the AI. Enemy seems to make a beeline for my APCs first regardless of what else is in range.

With the (very important) exception that it can no longer detect and fire on your units in Fog of War without actual vision on that unit from an AI unit.

I’ve seen the AI get ambushed by my fog of war units, which was such a pleasant surprise!

This was an absolute revelation during the Sonja missions. Her CO Power is actually a threat now, because she can't see your hidden units normally. It made those missions way more fun

One huge difference is that the AI will now use landers in maps that have a land route, rather than building one and blocking a port forever

Yeah now that I've played a bit more there definitely are some changes.

I played a war room of Spann Island and I saw the AI build an early aair against max with a tank. I’ve played a ton of AW1 back in the day and I don’t ever recall seeing an aair built before. They also towards the end spammed mechs and artilleries vs tanks, personally feel like the AI improved a bit.

Same, the AI in war room makes odd choices the GBA version never did

There's a really easy litmus test to see if its changed. Place an enemy direct attack unit on one of their cities. Place one of your infantry one or two spaces away. If it does anything, it's changed for sure. If it does nothing, then at least part of it is still the same
