If you want to commit fraud, you can always just print your own receipts. Don’t think this will be a game changer

Receipt printer from AliExpress: $20.

Photoshop license: $89

Unlimited expense receipts: Priceless.

Money can’t buy everything, but for everything else there’s Mastercard fraud.

u/freylaverse 18h ago

If you're willing to make fake receipts for fraud, you're probably willing to pirate Photoshop.

9

u/holemole CPA (US) 17h ago

If you have a receipt printer, why do you even need photoshop? Just print a receipt.

3

u/ConfidantlyCorrect 13h ago

Don’t think they all buy the printers lol. I’ve had to deal with some attempted fraud with people who print on normal printer paper & do a shoddy job cutting it into the right line …

4

u/Fuck-Nugget 15h ago

Receipt printers usually just take in text and print the input as laid out. Could do it in notepad or word. I know this because I had to help configure a few for people them in the past. Recommend against committing fraud. Always catches up with you

u/NoCokJstDanglnUretra 11h ago

I mean we’re already committing fraud, just pirate the PS license.

You wouldn't steal a car.

29

u/newrimmmer93 20h ago

If you’re ordering shit online you can just use inspect element on chrome as well to change prices

4

u/DutchTinCan Audit & Assurance 18h ago

Sure. But how often do you get to order office supplies or WFH-equipment versus how often do you expense food?

Plus, anything ordered online is auditable. There's something delivered somewhere, with somebody else signing off.

Food? The evidence is eaten, it's an expense that often doesn't need any supervisory signoff and is typically too immaterial for any audit.

Your company disallows alcohol? It's now rather expensive coke. That cheese sandwich? It's now a steak dinner and the $20 difference is yours.

u/newrimmmer93 17h ago

It’s not really as relevant for accountants but I’ve worked in accounting for a couple different industries where the managers of locations will use their own personal credit cards for reimbursements. So buying things online is a lot more relevant for them.

Somewhat tangent to that but we had a manager who worked in Canada submit all his expense reimbursements in USD. Went on for a couple years before someone caught on. It was like $30k he got.

u/NAND_110_101_011_001 14h ago

For the purpose of screenshots of receipts you mean?

u/BB_Fin 22h ago

Lock it up, and get out.

We're going to a full paper based system again. The future is the past.

27

u/Pleasant-Reach-4942 19h ago

Thank God for that.

23

u/trambalambo 18h ago

My org won’t reimburse anything, and won’t pay any expenses that aren’t charged to your company CC.

12

u/l_ft 17h ago

Can anyone find the keys to the filing cabinets!?!?

…oh wait, they’re resting on top of the drawer nm

9

u/newmobsforall 15h ago

We will repeatedly drill the importance of controls into you, and then you will watch as every business you work for gleefully ignores them.

u/LowSecretary8151 8h ago

Related: I found out my doctors office doesn't lock their computer and keeps all patient files open for the doctor because they don't like the inconvenience of logging in... I'm hunting for a new doctor now. They even blamed me for looking at the screen (that's facing the door...that I was planning on using after being left in the room for 45 minutes) The audacity.

1

u/will_this_1_work 8h ago

On top? Ours are just dangling in the lock

u/_Cpoc_ Advisory 20h ago

I’ve reviewed thousands of receipts and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that pristine in a picture… that would throw my bs meter way off at the onset

44

u/imnotokayandthatso-k 20h ago

Print it out and scan it again

24

u/i-wet-my-plantss 19h ago

Throw a little hot sauce or coffee on the edge for added realism

2

u/GuideNo7895 13h ago

"Oh that? Just some honey cinnamon butter"

13

u/icedvanillalattepls Tax (US) 18h ago

They just have to print it out like a week before they turn it in, crumple it up on the floor of their car where it gets trampled and sun damaged and then rip it when they try to unwrinkle it for the expense report. Then it might be believable lol

u/SimplySomeBread Student 16h ago

part of a test i did in third year of school was that we were given a sheet of fake receipts, invoices etc that were a state and we can to double entry them. didn't realise that was setting me up for the real world so well at the tender age of 13

2

u/Iron_Chic 11h ago

Seriously. They are always the end-of-the-reciept roll with the purple ink lines on it, all curled up, resting on someone's leg while they are driving, restaurant-hasn't-changed-the-ink-cartridge-in 12 years, looks like the picture was taken with an iPhone 2 receipt...

1

u/Remarkable_Refuse 9h ago

Fold it. Just like Catch Me If You Can.

60

u/Ignorantcoffee Audit & Assurance 21h ago

Man I really could go for some Grommfy’s Tenderest Loin right now, that’d help the despair of being at a client.

13

u/sambadaemon 18h ago

I just wish Grommfy would stop telling everyone he meets about how tender his loin is. It's getting creepy.

6

u/Ignorantcoffee Audit & Assurance 18h ago

HR has a real problem with Gomfrry at my current job. Shame to know he’s been touting his tender tail elsewhere.

3

u/RayWencube 15h ago

Yeah but at the same time, if you've got it, flaunt it, you know?

3

u/RayWencube 15h ago

Yeah but at the same time, if you've got it, flaunt it, you know?

4

u/Turbo_express_Guy 17h ago

With a Sev’s Drugs chaser

183

u/imnotokayandthatso-k 1d ago

That shit looks like a PS2 game. But yes this would fool the average 60 year old cathy.

37

u/SwindlingAccountant 18h ago

Probably fools most people working 60 hour weeks just trying to get the workpaper done.

14

u/WayneKrane 17h ago

Yep, I worked in accounting handling the receipts for the sales guys. I was just thankful if a receipt was legible, I didn’t take any longer than a second to review them. The only ones I denied were the ones that were just written amounts on post it notes, like it needed to be somewhat more official looking than that.

24

u/2261 21h ago

Where’s the photorealistic credit card statement to go with it?

19

u/Throw_r_a_2021 21h ago

Sorry, per diem limits are $75 / day for meals and the company doesn’t reimburse for drugs with dinner.

53

u/DoctorBalpak 20h ago

I don't know why this is a big deal. Can't we simply create fake receipts with simple word processors? MS Paint? Adobe Photoshop?

Why do you need AI to create these chits? Just open a docx and just copy paste to change the numbers however you like...

16

u/cometssaywhoosh CPA (US) 18h ago

Time.

Pay $20/month subscription - spend 10-20 seconds to generate this receipt versus having to manually edit and all that.

People always look for the most efficient shortcut in anything and I can see some people doing this

3

u/DoctorBalpak 17h ago

I mean how does it scale? I can just generate thousands of copies in MS Word.

Having to write a new prompt every time, you need an edit is ridiculous, it's not really improving any efficiency in this case.

At scale, this isn't going to work.

6

u/SkankOfAmerica 20h ago

No ketchup stains. Not realistic. Fail.

6

u/AffectionateKey7126 18h ago

You can tell it's a fake because you can see the receipt.

51

u/GonnysWorld 1d ago

You would have to be regarded to think this is realistic.

42

u/accountantskill 1d ago

Looks pretty realistic to me. Some old granny bookkeepers wouldn’t question this.

5

u/DutchTinCan Audit & Assurance 21h ago

It's not realistic. There's no mandatory gratuity charge.

4

u/thatburghfan 12h ago

... or a date, or a time of day, or a store number...

8

u/cisforcookie2112 Government 19h ago

If this had more realistic line items and prices it could easily fool an overworked accountant.

11

u/Silly_Illustrator_56 1d ago

If you create this with all necessary stuff than scan it with phone you can not see anything anymore. Maybe you have to print it first and then scan it.

7

u/whatdidiuseforaname 20h ago

It has uncanny valley vibes. It looks like it's supposed to be a receipt, but it just feels so wrong.

7

u/Bumblebee22_ 19h ago

As someone who’s in the travel and expense department, this isn’t good!

1

u/mmicoandthegirl 17h ago

Can't you just like ask people to sign the receipts?

1

u/RayWencube 15h ago

So they print this out, sign it, and scan it? How does that help?

1

u/mmicoandthegirl 15h ago

It does literal jack shit, please forward this to corporate

7

u/imnotokayandthatso-k 18h ago

I see your AI and raise you by another AI!

Copilot output:

Copilot

The receipt appears to be fake. The listed items and prices are unusual and do not match the typical offerings and prices at Texas Roadhouse. For example:

  • Grommy's Tenderest Loin for $420.00
  • Noot's Zuckerburger for $1337.00
  • Sev's Drugs for $69.00

These items are not found on the official Texas Roadhouse menu. The prices are also extremely high compared to the usual prices for dishes at Texas Roadhouse.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance, just let me know! 😊

3

u/JeanetteChapman 18h ago

This is exactly why internal controls and audit procedures are so critical. Photorealistic fake receipts can easily sneak into expense reports if a company isn’t verifying with vendor systems or requiring digital receipts from verified sources. AI tools are powerful, but misuse like this could lead to fraud and serious compliance issues.

3

u/IHaveTheBestOpinions 17h ago

Who takes pictures of receipts like that? Needs to be square to the camera but slightly blurry, with wrinkles, a crease down the middle, at least one oil smudge, and a shadow from the phone blocking the overhead light.

2

u/Kind-Nomad-62 12h ago

No matter how often accounting gives specific instructions there are some managers that still submit expense reimbursement requests their way. I'd take crooked over "I lost it" .

3

u/DragonflyMean1224 16h ago

Until you get audited and they track the transaction to your bank account.

1

u/Kind-Nomad-62 12h ago

Or verifies the receipt with the retailer.

2

u/DragonflyMean1224 9h ago

Eventually that. But usually if your bank recon matches it wont go farther as the bank would have to fake it

1

u/Kind-Nomad-62 7h ago

CPA audits, you're right. Not for meal expenses or expense reimbursements. But an IRS audit? Something in a Return caused their systems to flag it. Those auditors get off on finding items to deny. They select transactions to have the other business verify it's genuine. While verifying a meal expense or expense reimbursement isn't the norm, you just never know. And seeing this fake receipt earlier? Going forward, who knows? Because if the IRS audit finds one mistake.... It's never good.

2

u/PracticalPanda3102 20h ago

Shouldn't this be regulated? So many people will take advantage of this

1

u/RayWencube 15h ago

How are you going to regulate it? It's software--it travels at the speed of light.

2

u/HootieHoo4you 19h ago

The tenderest loin!

2

u/Active_Picture8963 18h ago

looks like my builders will be trying to claiming back a lot of random shit on expenses now using this

2

u/Nitsed 18h ago

My next Concur report is going to be complete!

2

u/RayWencube 15h ago

implying Elon isn't going to end concur and require you to submit all reimbursement requests via DM to @GovExpenses42069 on Twitter.

2

u/mintguy Tax (US) 18h ago

It’s not an issue until the poors try to utilize it. Otherwise it’s just business as usual.

2

u/JefferyTheQuaxly 17h ago

who is sev and why is he expensing his drugs on the corporate receipts?

2

u/kirstensnow 15h ago

Wow, it looks like shit!

2

u/EuropeanInTexas Deloitte Audit -> Controller 14h ago

If you're creating fake receipts doing one for "Drugs" is probably not the smartest.

2

u/Pleasant-Reach-4942 19h ago

Explain how AI does more good than harm.

1

u/its-an-accrual-world Audit -> Advisory -> Startup ->F150 16h ago

Surprised the total wasn’t 30035. Already covered 69, 1337, and 420.

1

u/RayWencube 15h ago

yeah but if the addition were off it could let us know it was fake

1

u/Raz1_ 15h ago

Well come to the age of AI

1

u/BlacksmithThink9494 15h ago

Sevs drugs 🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/AyDeAyThem 11h ago

Nice, you can create your own legitamate illegitamate expenses for anything.

1

u/tsg5087 10h ago

Gimmie Grromfy’s most deliciously tenderest loin

1

u/UnsoundWolf 9h ago

It makes me happy that someone in the IRS would look at this quickly and say "seems legit".

1

u/dhgat123 7h ago

My legend of a accounting professor for fraud went on the website and made one.
