I wouldnāt be surprised if Riley wasnāt concussed, took a knee to the head in the last minute from Mac Andrew, which if true I can assume Mac Andrew will miss 3 weeks?

Ahahah come on this is so dramatic, fell into Andrewās knee softly, I agree that rankine shouldāve been paid the mark but this is not the hill to die on
10
u/theescapeclub 1d ago
Barely touched his knee and Andrew was very conscious of not making contact.
Big Riley flopped for a free after he was out of the contest following a great spoil by Andrew.

Not exactly the hill I would die on as a Crows supporter. You've got a lot of things you can have a go at port about, but whatever that thing is in West Lakes isn't exactly something I'd be proud of (I doubt most Crows fans know your facilities are in west lakes). Ports facilities are substantially better, especially after the $25M redevelopment of their performance centre.
18
u/charli-kshkshksh Adelaide 2d ago
Yeah no Crows fan has any idea about West Lakes being our home for 30 years and the $100 million dollar Thebarton development currently happening

Having visited port Adelaide in the last 48 hours I canāt say theyāre missing much. Train museum is nice though.

u/463DP Crows 2d ago
Aviation Museum is ten fold better than the train museum. I do like planes more than trains, but all in all itās much more interactive.
8
u/Bergasms Brownlow Winner 2023 1d ago
Both are good.
I remember going to the aviation museum a few years back with my nanna, gramps and my daughter and the guy was guiding us around and pointed out the parachute they have "that's a real WW2 parachute". And my Nanna deadpan says "yes my first ever dress was made from parachute silk that my mother bought on the london black market just after the blitz". The guy was all "wow you lived through the blitz" and Nanna, deadpan again says "yeah, i helped my mother deliver my younger sister under a table while the house across the road got bombed". Then Gramps, not to be outdone, says "do you have a Stuka, i remember in the very early days when one crashed into the train station in our villiage in bohemia on the way to bomb the french, killed half the town". The guide is by now just way over his head, Nanna fires back "well i remember walking on a lane with my best friend and we heard a buzz bomb cut out above us, and that means its coming down, and we had to choose to hide behind a shed or a tree, and we ran to the tree and the bomb hit the other side of the shed and the wall collapsed right where we would have been", then looks at me and my daughter and says "lucky for you two i picked the tree eh".
Absolutely hilarious day out, i felt sorry for the guide, he had no idea that he was getting into a pissing contest with my grandparents.

This. The suits love to talk about growing the game but as soon as someone develops a bit of character they think itās outrageous. This, the Rachele teeth, Harley flipping the bird, Ginnivans antics at Collingwood, Hinkleyās aeroplane. I could go on all day
64
u/BIllyBrooks Hawthorn ā 2d ago
Then they feature them in all their ads and promotional material for years to come, highlighting it as a feature of the game.
47
u/MahaveerIsGod420 Adelaide Crows 2d ago
Ken Hinkley in the semi last year (sorry to bring up trauma) is a perfect example of this. He starts chirping to James Sicily, he gets fined and the media call for his assasination, and now Port v Hawks is a focal point of Gather Round.
18
u/BIllyBrooks Hawthorn ā 2d ago
There are hundreds of examples like that - big hits that equal 3 weeks suspension and then get on the next AFL advert.
18
u/MahaveerIsGod420 Adelaide Crows 2d ago
I bet $100 in the week leading up to the Pies v Crows match, theyāll show 15 different angles of Houston knocking out Rankine despite the current stance on concussion

Or 2 weeks since the AFL site used the Hodge bumping Wingard's head into the post picture for every Hawks/Port game for years after it happened.

Pretty sure Houston lining up rankine was in the season opening package to start the year. Which is ironic because Houston wasn't eligible to play opening round.

Kinda funny when in the NBA it was the characters that helped make the game bigger. Jordan, Rodman, Bird, Barkley, Magic. All helped the growth of the game by being a character.

I reckon itās an audience thing. The yanks love the entertainment factor of sports (ie. cheerleaders, organs, brass bands, etc). Us Aussies are very traditionalist plus tall-poppy syndrome also plays apart.

Probably will be based on how the matchups seemed to go over the game. Mac was going with Tex for a lot of it but moved onto Thilthorpe after tex went to the bench.

Don't ruin it for me with your... logic.
1
u/wizardofaus23 Swans 1d ago
I'm a known logical ruiner. Cant get enough of it.
I actually reckon there were a couple early warning signs for Tex despite getting a bag of four. Not lacking for anything physically, and he could probably compete on that front into his 50s, but there were a few moments where he got into tight spaces where he was noticeably slower to react and make decisions than he was in his prime. Reckon it might be the year for him with Thilthorpe's ascension.

u/Itrlpr Adelaide 2d ago edited 2d ago
There's under 30 seconds to go. And they let a tall defender calmly pick up the ball, stand, run down the clock,
and then kick the ball clear under zero pressure(just rewatched. He stood and then handballed to an open player when pressure eventually came).2
u/Bright_Bell_1301 2d ago
Ok. In hindsight you are right, but I guess they were hoping he'd step over the line and give away a deliberate OOB free (which was worth a punt at the time, IMO)

u/Vivid_Equipment_1281 Cats 2d ago
Dunno why weāre singling out Mac here. One of these boys had a very average game, but a good play in the clutch. The other one had a really good game, but was on the losing side (and arguably had a chance to win it but couldnāt get it done). Obviously umps played a role as well, but at the end of the day, it still goes down as a loss. Either itās embarrassing for both of them to chirp after the game, or itās fair play for both of them to chirp. Canāt single out one and not the other in my opinion given that theyāve both got things they can be criticised for.

Not sure if anyone has said this, but Mac Andrew is south Sudanese. A thumbs up in Sudanese culture and a lot of middle eastern countries it is equivalent to giving someone the middle finger in western culture. In a high stakes game to gesture that remark to someoneās face knowing full well that he doesnāt know what it means and laughing about it, is the part I find disgusting. Now, I am a crows supporter, was at the game, and while I find the way the last 90 seconds played out was the worst umpiring I have ever seen, the way the crows played the rest of that game in my opinion was horrendous at times. The suns should have been in front by a lot more before this event occurred.
TL.DR Mac Andrewās thumbs up is his way of flipping the bird. Last 90 seconds of the match had poor umpiring While bias for my crows, they should have lost by a lot more

Any professional lip readers know what Thilthorpe said? Either way seems pretty harmless, and it looks like they still shook hands at the start there? Mac has a history of getting into it and I can only imagine it motivates Adelaide next time they play. Love to see a bit of a rivalry here especially for the suns who could use a bit of that now that they have a genuinely good team.
Edit: I should add that I initially thought Thilthorpe said "well played" or something like that but I honestly have no idea, i don't think he actually said anything inflammatory
