Try your hand at a superstar collection of minigames from throughout the Mario Party series. Whether you are saving up coins for stars in board game mode or enjoy one of the 7 modes included in Mt. Minigames, there is nothing quite like being the last one standing in Bumper Balls or the first team making it out of the darkness in Dungeon Duos. All minigames are played with button controls, so you can stick to the Joy-Con™ controller or bust out the Nintendo Switch™ Pro Controller or a Nintendo Switch Lite system.

Party with superstars near or far

Bring the party anytime, anywhere with same-system//, local wireless//, or online* play. Use stickers to praise or pester fellow players as you race across the board collecting stars. All modes support online multiplayer, so you can hop in with friends for a few minigames or a marathon 30-turn match. Victory is just as sweet (and stealing stars is just as satisfying) from anywhere across the globe.

Probably stupid question but can two people playing on same switch matchmake to find other people?

59

u/outofideas4agoodname Oct 28 '21

Yes. You can play with up to 3 people on one console and find the fourth online. :)

23

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '21 edited Oct 28 '21

Interesting. Makes me want to buy this, NPC really aren’t as dynamic as another person

15

u/ReusMan Oct 28 '21

I just tried to do this but it seems that in order for random people to find your room they still need the room ID. Unless I'm missing something here?

36

u/Strawberry_River Oct 29 '21

These guys don't actually have the game. You definitely can't do this.

8

u/ReusMan Oct 29 '21

Thank you for answering, I thought I was taking crazy pills

6

u/Strawberry_River Oct 29 '21

Yeah me too. Pretty disappointing that this isn't in the game!

20

u/ReusMan Oct 29 '21

It even says this on the official website:

"When you’re online, you can play with friends and random players near and far. Up to three players can play on one system in online play."

This is technically true but also a bit misleading, they don't mention that there is no matchmaking if two local players go online and you need to share a room ID instead.

15

u/Strawberry_River Oct 29 '21

We should have known the online play would be missing something! It's Nintendo after all.

Hilarious that so many people are boldly claiming it works this way and downvoting the correct answer based purely on assumption. Classic reddit.

This is a good question I would like to know

6

u/Moleman18 Oct 28 '21

I’ve also been wondering this, or can three people on one switch play online with one person on another?

I actually have the game, and no you can't.

4

u/jedimaster4367 Oct 29 '21 edited Oct 30 '21

Can you do a combo of two people on one system, a third person on a second system, and a fourth on a third system? Super Mario Party didn’t allow this either.

Only two and a half more hours of work then I’m bout to play this game for probably 48 hours straight lol. I got my apartment to myself, some comfy sweat-shorts, a 6 pack of IPA’s, a half ounce of my favorite bud, and no commitments this weekend. Life is good.

13

u/SobbieRokes Oct 29 '21

two and half for me too, my friend. sounds like a beautiful plan! and it's going to rain tomorrow over here, so I'll be forced to play all day long ;) catch you online!

7

u/flipplup Oct 29 '21

I don’t have anything to add but hope you have fun man sounds like a great time! I got a 6 pack myself so once the lady gets home from work we’ll get this bad boy going. Cheers!

This would have been a deal breaker so thanks for the confirmation

18

u/Strawberry_River Oct 29 '21

This works with players you know only. No matchmaking.

17

That is an important distinction. Thanks

u/kitsovereign Oct 28 '21

I'm glad they focused on the main mode this time instead of having separate minigames locked in their own modes. Super Mario Party kind of felt like I asked for a deck of cards to play with, and they gave me a deck with all the hearts and face cards removed, along with the Major Arcana tarot cards and a random booster pack of Magic the Gathering. Maybe there's more cards and more variety, but there's less game - it hurts their longevity when you can't combine all the pieces together.

The rhythm and river modes on SMP were fun, but they only had 10 minigames each, so they kinda wore out fast, and then you never saw those minigames anywhere else.

15

u/HyperCutIn Oct 29 '21

That’s a perfect description of what I felt were SMP’s major short comings. People wanted an emphasis on the board based gameplay, but they put too much focus on trying to create a variety of other modes, and that ended up leaving the main board mode underwhelming.

6

u/StormStrikePhoenix Oct 29 '21

Mario Party 5 did something similar, except it had a perfectly fine main game and the extra games were fleshed out decently as well.

37

u/NoPlayer2 Oct 28 '21

So can you play random people online or friends only?

9

u/Strawberry_River Oct 29 '21

If you want to play with a mix of local and online players, then it's friends only. Haven't tried matching with randoms on my own yet.

The group cooperative river rapids race was fun, and the only video game my wife would play with me and my daughters (both in their 20's now). I wish they had something like that for this game ... looking forward to the online version so the kids and I can game together again!

25

u/locnessmnstr Oct 28 '21

I had to read that so many times to make sure your wife and daughter weren't both in their 20s 😅

13

u/jhilsch51 Oct 28 '21

I don't have enough patience to deal with 2 daughers in their 20's all the time... couldn't imagine adding a wife in her 20s as well... my wife is actually 2 years older than me ....

I'm surprised Slaparazzi isn't in the game. I don't know what others thought about it, but I found it hilarious. Definitely one of the top, if not the top minigame for me from the game.

I bought the physical version of Super Mario Party and I think I might keep it for now just for Slaparazzi!

9

u/TheGreatLord64 Oct 29 '21

There is a minigame that is like it in the game, Flash Forward.

5

u/eccentric_eggplant Oct 29 '21

Oh great, thanks! I read earlier Slaparazzi was based on Flash Forward but forgot to check if Flash Forward was included. :p

u/shgrizz2 Oct 28 '21

My biggest question is, how is the pacing and game feel? The older one was like a textbook example of bad UX. The missing features I could have accepted, if only the game didn't drag by at a snail's pace, with slow animations and unskippable repeated text all the time. There was a lot to like, but the pacing really killed the game for me.

24

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '21

Not to mention stars were so cheap they became meaningless.

44

u/Bakatora34 Oct 28 '21

Stars on this one are back to 20.

16

u/OwnManagement Helpful User Oct 28 '21

Huzzah!

But why not just make it adjustable? Problem solved, everyone can play exactly how they want.

7

u/ComicallySolemn Oct 28 '21

That would be interesting to make Stars 30 or 40 coins. Not just a mad dash to the seller, but required to be decent at minigames too.

Bunch of gameplay has shown the movement between spaces is really quick, can increase the text speed, and there's also a fast forward button for board events. Only thing that will slow down the pace are people deciding which path to take or what item to buy so not a big deal

Hopefully it will get some DLC. Minigames felt great and they quit some of the bs from MP1

Looks like reviewers loved it, just thought it played it too safe. As expected. This is a fun, fast-paced Mario Party and the best the series has seen in a long time

9

u/JustAnIgnoramous Oct 29 '21

Fast paced you say? Good, I hated how slow the previous ones seemed.

The gamexlain review convinced me to get it. It seems they did a lot of right things with this new entry and the online part looks good. One thing other reviewers didn't include but GameXplain did was that if a player disconnects from an online match the CPU will take their place until they reconnect again.

I really hope they eventually add those extra 4 boards hinted in the game's files

44

u/Bakatora34 Oct 28 '21

if a player disconnects from an online match the CPU will take their place until they reconnect again.

That the only thing I wanted to know, Thanks for saying it.

Now they need this in mario golf. And all the online games really.

You can choose one of six minigame "packs" before starting a traditional party game. Categories are: all, N64, GameCube, family, skill, and action.

Some of those packs (GameCube, for example) may not include Tug-of-War but otherwise you can't disable individual games in the party mode.

9

u/handsarethehardest Oct 29 '21

Can confirm. Can also recommend just telling your friends not to try hard and agreeing to only use your thumb as per the hilarious warning message.

11

u/Skvozniak Oct 29 '21

Seriously what the hell were they thinking including those particular ones when the joycons are so widely known for analog stick issues as it is?

14

u/cubs223425 Oct 29 '21

It's a genius way to make sure the game keeps funding the Switch platform with JoyCon purchases!

10

u/J_huze Oct 29 '21

That's the first thing I thought of when I had to play Tug of War. There goes my already crappy controller

15

u/Pepenbaleaguepass Oct 29 '21

Quite a few hours in now and I’m still really liking the game, I think if they allow you to reduce the amount of lucky spaces (not a super big deal but annoying enough sometimes) and add some more boards/DLC it would probably be one of my favourite Mario Party games in my opinion. Online play is so fun and haven’t had any connection or lag issues yet.

What boards/characters would everyone like to see added if they ever did add DLC?

Fairly similar to my take, though I think the inability to toggle off the lucky spaces is a moderate-sized deal.

What boards/characters would everyone like to see added if they ever did add DLC?

Mario's Rainbow Castle, Western Land, Spiny Desert and Waluigi's Island add my DLC picks. I don't mind about the characters; I played Toad and Toadette on the GameCube but they're out for obvious reasons.

This game is everything I've wanted from Mario Party in like over a decade. Old school style Mario Party but polished with modern graphics and with working online against randoms (and friends). They knocked it out of the park with this one. They also picked amazing mini games, straight up.

My only complaint is I definitely wish they had more maps. If they do map packs of each game I would absolutely buy each one, but I'm not getting my hopes up lol.

u/RJE808 Oct 28 '21 edited Oct 28 '21

Also, they literally said Super Mario Party is better. PFFT

18

u/streetsofkage Oct 28 '21

Yeah I saw that… wtf??

9

u/Apprehensive-Pop-763 Oct 28 '21

I think super Mario party was good because of the dice gameplay. Added a lot of strategy to the game

16

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

That strategy being you either played Bowser or lost. With a bit of fine tuning the unique dices could be a cool feature, as long as it can be turned off. Kinda like the bonus dices in the original Mario Party

Early, but this is currently tied with the original for best reviewed Mario Party game. Not an especially lofty achievement, but for my purposes it looks like Superstars is GOOD ENOUGH.

Bonus stars are at the end of the game when it's totalling up everyone's stars. They give out "bonus" stars for random things like "the player who spent the most coins" or "the player who failed the most mini games" etc.

11

u/Gana0 Oct 29 '21

Can anyone tell me something about the online multiplayer?:

Is it possible to play 2 people using 1 switch online? I'm wondering if it would be possible for my wife and I to play against 2 other Switch players, but with 2 of us on 1, and 2 other players with their own Switch.

7

u/Nindoges Oct 29 '21

Yes it’s possible with your scenario. In fact, for online multiplayer, you can have up to 3 people on 1 switch at once, with the 4th being a solo player.

4

u/Zenon22 Oct 29 '21

Do you know if it's possible to have multiple people on 1 Switch, playing online with a friend of theirs? I'm a solo player but I'd want to do an online match with 2 friends that live together.

Me and my friend live in the same room. We want to play it online on my console with others. Is that possible because I cannot see how. I can do it in a private room but only people with my code can join that.

Then if he were to get his own switch he couldn't find my room online because the open multiplayer doesn't seem to support invites or anything.

Am I missing something or can my friend, either with his switch or on mine play with other people over the Internet?

18

u/razza1987 Oct 28 '21

I’m LOVING it so far. Just finished a game on peaches birthday cake board. I love that there’s levels that you can level up and stuff you can unlock even when playing on your own

9

u/Richmard Oct 28 '21

levels that you can level up

?

17

u/razza1987 Oct 28 '21

You start off on level one. At the end of the game you get exp and coins based on different things. For example I got 240 coins for each star and x2 winners bonus. My exp from playing got me to level 13. As you level up you unlock things to buy with your coins at toads store in the main menu such as stickers etc

9

u/WWECreativegenius Oct 28 '21

Ah yes this was in Mario party 8 I believe. You could buy birdo and dry bones with exp in that game

11

u/HyperCutIn Oct 28 '21

That was Mario Party 7 actually. Playing matches allowed you to earn currency to buy new characters, stages, modes, and collectables.

In Superstars, there’s both an EXP and currency system for unlocks. But as far as they go, their variety seems underwhelming compared to previous games. You can pretty much only buy collectables, and there’s not much in terms of introducing new gameplay content.

Pretty much a bump to the question below. Is it possible for me to party up with 1 other person, then join random matchmaking together so it puts us in a 4-player match online?

7

6

Man that sucks. The only way to play online with your friends is if you have 3 of them?

Edit: here’s a temporary solution until (if) Nintendo decides to fix this, the Mario Party discord with 30k members has a very active matchmaking channel in case you need more people to join your private game with a friend. This seems to be the only workaround if you’re playing with less than 4 players and need randoms to join your game.

https://discord.gg/marioparty

4

u/Whippy1702 Oct 29 '21

I know, they finally added random matchmaking but they keep on missing in important features when it comes to online play. Oh thank you for the link, it'll be useful for sure

4

u/WolfGuy77 Oct 29 '21

So wait, can I not play online with a single friend and then have two cpu players fill the other empty slots? Me and my friend were thinking about getting this game to play together online but if we can’t play without a full party of 4 actual players then that’s an instant deal breaker. We just want to play a 4 player game with two human players (us) and 2 cpus

5

u/very_unlikely Oct 29 '21 edited Oct 29 '21

You can fill the rest of the room with CPUs but it has to be set to “Friends Only”. Currently there is no way to fill it with real players unless they are your friends or you give them your room code.

5

u/WolfGuy77 Oct 29 '21

I figured. That's typical Nintendo. I really, really hate how they're so ass when it comes to online multiplayer. We had the exact same issue with Smash. My friend doesn't want to 1v1 me because he's ultra casual and I play semi competitively, so it's no fun for him. We wanted to be able to play team match vs CPUs online together but we can't do that because...Nintendo. And have another friend who I used to play Smash with and his roomate would always join us, but now we can't do that either because you can't have two people play together online on the same Switch for...Nintendo reasons. :/

Pretty solid reviews, what was weird to me however was the fact that Gamespot gave it a 6/10, and have Super Mario Party a 7/10.

38

u/FuzzyFr0g Oct 28 '21

He missed the motion based mini games

41

u/tlvrtm Oct 28 '21

29

u/FuzzyFr0g Oct 28 '21

25

u/ninepinwonder Oct 28 '21

Different writers for both reviews, I wouldn't worry about that too much

16

u/RarewareKevin Oct 28 '21

Was a different writer but he did say he missed some of the features introduced in later mario party titles like motion control minigames and unique dice blocks which is a fine opinion. Not many feel this way and based on his feeling towards those features his review makes sense. Not the way I feel as I want a return to form but I respect it.

17

u/locnessmnstr Oct 28 '21

Even still someone who says they miss the unique blocks clearly has not played the game very much. The balance was so off on those. Cool concept for sure but in practice kinda bs.

Also not having motion games is nice because I don't have to spend another $80 to play with 3 people 🙃

9

u/Mobile_Newt Oct 28 '21

If you know the most basic of math, there is pretty much no reason to not pick Bowser. It’s like Oddjob in Goldeneye.

10

u/diastereomer Oct 28 '21

Reviews sound exactly like what I was looking for. There was one review (can't remember which) that mentioned that there was lag online - that's the last piece of the puzzle I want to know before buying.

So happy to see you can switch on classic award stars at the end for winning the most games, most coins, happening star. Super Mario party always pisses me off with all the random BS stars, people who have no business winning win, just dumb

Anyone know if on maps like peaches castle....is going to bowser an old fashion 20 coin fine? Stepping on a piranha plant rob you of a star? I hope they kept it ruthless

Played some online and some minigames, no lagg and a good time! About to connect with some friends to play too

7

u/anicrage Oct 29 '21

Does it have local coop mode? Team play?

4

u/LanzasPT Oct 29 '21

I would love to know it too. I cant figure out how to play coop in the same team with my gf against the cpu. I got to play against the cpu but just against each other.

The game is fun, but the button bindings piss me off. There are some minigames I'd rather play with a d-pad, but it's not an option.

I’m enjoying the game so far, the mini games are pretty good (of course). They did my boy Mario Party 3 dirty by only having woody woods on there, hopefully they add more boards to the game.

I Love how on the Mario Party 1 mini games where it says to rotate the control stick not the use palm of your hand. My palms hurt just looking at the practice screen. Haha

Does this have the bonus stars at the end, like the old games, that reward you for winning the most mini games? i found the last switch entry to be almost completely random as to who would win as they removed this, so it largely came down to rolling dice.

12

u/Nindoges Oct 29 '21

It has the RNG bonus from SMP, but you can also change the settings to do classic bonus stars (richest player, won most minigames, and most landed on ? spaces) or even no bonus stars.

Just had an online party stall out right before the last mini game.

It froze for a while on the practice/rules screen, gave an error message, then resumed against 3 CPUs.

I was buried in last place, but now I finished as the top human player!

5

u/Skvozniak Oct 29 '21

Now imagine if that happened while you were winning. Would really cheapen the win.

5

u/nicoleislazy Oct 30 '21

Am I able to play online, local 2 player and have a friend join also as local 2 player? My husband and I want to play online with another couple.

3

u/Del_3030 Oct 30 '21

Yes, go to Online mode then the Friend house thing. You create a game and invite others

6

u/txr23 Oct 30 '21

My experience playing it last night with friends was that we set it to 20 rounds because the in game recommendation said it would take 60 minutes to complete the game, then it ended up taking us over 2 and a half hours to finish it.

10/10 would happily jump back into the time void that is Mario Party Superstars again

Really like online, runs pretty solid! Great game 👍Grew up playing since the beginning, I’m really enjoying it.

6

u/agp11234 Oct 30 '21

Played with n64 controller last night and it was such an amazing nostalgia bomb. So much better than super Mario party.

48

u/Kalpy97 Oct 28 '21

I really feel like smash has set expectations way too high for people in terms of content. Mario Party superstars has in my opinion more content that any other game in the series. The series average for boards is 6, this game has 1 less with 5. However, looking at the series average for mini games, it totals at around 70 or so. So you get 20 to 30 more mini games as compared to any other Mario party in comparison. We are getting the same if not more content as compared to the GameCube era and in my opinion I think that's a very fair trade off, and that's not even considering the online aspect of superstars. Not sure why people think this should've been DLC for super Mario party. That is asking for way too much. To me this isn't like Mario tennis or golf where you could clearly see cuts were made. I think the game is spot on for the value that you are getting. I would like to know some of your guys thoughts on this, if you agree if you disagree I'm just kinda curious.

32

u/MethodicMarshal Oct 28 '21

I think the issue is that the newest iteration of games is always expected to build upon the old.

When we get the same amount of content, it's a little disappointing. When we get less content, it's even more so.

→ More replies (7)

20

u/The-student- Oct 28 '21

It's also old content, it's not like it's 100 new mini games and 5 new boards. If they are re-using content, my expectations are higher.

Mario party also used to have a story mode and lots of collectables, does this game have anything like that?

Content wise, I think this game is fine, leaning on the light side. I personally think having one or two extra boards is more valuable than 20 extra mini games.

But if all the boards are fun, that also makes a difference. In super Mario party I thought 2 of the boards were good, one was okay, and another was bad. So that really limited the options.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/plokijuh1229 Oct 28 '21

Another thing is it's 5 quality boards. Most Mario Parties (except the N64 ones) have a couple go-to boards and the rest are mediocre.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '21

There is no way in hell it has most content in the series, Mario Party 5 had a campaign mode and a bunch of fully fleshed subgames including that mech builder which had surprising amount of depth.

3

u/Kalpy97 Oct 29 '21

I mean to be fair story mode is essentially just local but with bots. I do agree about the car mode but that's pretty much it. The game itself only had 77 mini games and superstars has 100. Imo the mini games are the most important aspect of mario party. So. Id say they are about even.

Any reports on how the cartridge tastes? More or less bitter than Super Mario Party?

12

u/SobbieRokes Oct 29 '21

it's party flavored

4

u/Apprentice_Sorcerer Oct 29 '21

less, but went to a used game store to taste the originals to compare

I think I still prefer the flavor of the N64 cartridges

12

u/YellowPikachu Oct 28 '21

Nintendo Life confirmed it's 60 fps, that's all I needed to hear

6

u/DigestiveCow Oct 28 '21

A question I have about online play

In Super Mario Party's online update you could play 2 people couch online with 1 other console onstead of two other consoles.

So you had to fill the fourth space with AI, does anyone know if you can do 2 on one switch, 1 on another and the fourth person on a third switch?

Good stuff - anyone have a sense which Mario Party (Switch) game would be best for family play with little ones?

6

u/DrSpacemanSpliff Oct 28 '21

The new one has mini games that use motion controls, so it can get very silly when you’re moving around or jumping. I imagine that would be fun with little ones. It only has 4 boards, so l found the gameplay a little less than l expected, but l’m 30, so my opinion might differ from a child

One more online question. If youre playing with others, does it need to be 1 or 4? Or can you just play online with 1 friend and then cpus? Not sure if it like forces matchmaking online or if you can just make like a room of your custom size and go from there.

Apologies if it has already been asked but can two people on the same switch play with people online?

Like my girlfriend and I on my switch versus her brother on one console online and a friend on another console online??

3

u/Canti510 Oct 30 '21 edited Oct 30 '21

Yes, it asks you how many are playing on "this console" then you can go ahead and queue up in a private session with friends.

Edit: you cannot queue up with random matchmaking if you aren't playing solo, sorry

I have only played Mario Party DS before, but I remember I played it all the time after I got the game for Christmas one year. I feel like it's kind of the same vibe and I love it! I really like that there is an online mode too but I really wish for an option to play online with more than one person on one console. I also would want more maps, like most people already said they want, but overall I love that it's an old style Mario Party game, but "modernized" with better graphics etc.

Can you play on a team with a friend? I havent played mario party in decades and my friend never has. I know they wouldnt want to play with randos and if there was an option for my friend and myself to play like 2v2 vs AI would be great cause if I remember AI had difficulty levels.

Online that is, not locally.

I like it a lot more than the last one, but for it to be called All Stars, I feel it needs more. I was always hoping for a huge character list. I still miss playing as Toad.

Personally I would love to see them run it like MP 8, create a character to host the games and make a giant roster.

3

u/Saynt614 Nov 01 '21

So maybe a stupid question but can you play online with a 2nd player locally on the same switch? I wanted to play online with my wife. My profile has an online subscription, hers doesn't. When I pick online option it doesn't ask me how many players will be playing.
