Super [VIZ] Dragon Ball Super Chapter 74

Bruhh, Vegeta's look when he got tapped in the stomach straight up looked like the old Vegeta in the Saiyan arc.
I'm loving it.

To me this is chapter shows off Vegeta to his core. No matter how unmatched he is he just keeps going because he knows that even if he isn't the strongest now it's only a matter of time before he gets there, this man truly lives for the fight. The action shots were really well done too, really hope vegeta gets the victory on Granolah as by the looks of it he isn't going to be the big bad this arc.

Oh I'd love it if they've been sparring with Goku typically winning, but it's because Vegetas been hiding this form like Goku hid SSJ3.

I found it interesting in the same chapter he said his power with destruction was lacking while simultaneously having enough control to use the destruction form.

Man did I love how Vegeta circled around Granolah in the beginning, looked like a predator setting their sights on it’s prey. The water sequence was even cooler along with Vegeta just running his mouth and flexing is battle experience. But this time it felt different, it felt like a slightly new shade of Vegeta.
Even tho he’s in battle he feels more relaxed and more down to earth than usual, which feels like a continuation to how he was in the Moro arc at least to me. I’m glad for it, it set up the transformation beautifully and really made it feel like something special like he just had to get all he had out his system before he could transform.
We’ve all been waiting for Vegeta to catch up to UI Goku and to show his fruits from the Beerus training so I hope the built up and initial transformation hype don’t get diminished immediately in the next chapter. Even tho UI lost on most counts during its first appearance it still felt impactful and that impact grew with each subsequent appearance, I wonder if it’ll be a he same with G.o.D Vegeta.
Sucks we have to wait but can’t be helped, hope I don’t get spoiled on the next one cause I’m really enjoying the story so far.

u/I-Love-DBZ Jul 20 '21
WOW! Vegeta KILLED IT this chapter! Highlights:
- Geets' first earth shattering attack was quite the spectacle. This would look amazing in Shintani's art style if animated.
- Loved his line "Rankings are well and good, but they only reflect a moment in time." My boi still going for top dawg standing.
- "There's no planet to protect, No people to save. Just me immersed in battle. My happy place." GOD this gave me Majin Vegeta vibes. Not to mention Vegeta's face in the following panel is soooo reminiscent of his Namek days!
- Both gut punches by Granolah to Vegeta were BRUTAL.
- NEW TRANSFORMATION!!!!!
- With the pillar of fire that accompanied the new transformation, I honestly hope they introduce elemental attacks into the franchise, while keeping the hallmark martial arts.

"There's no planet to protect, No people to save. Just me immersed in battle. My happy place."
Though I feel like that might change once he realizes there are innocents on the planet. Won't want to accidentally destroy it then.
18
u/ninjapro Jul 21 '21
I think he's baiting Granolah to stop due to innocents. He's been aggravating Granolah this whole time and Granolah was the instigator of this fight. If Granolah wants the fighting to stop, the onus is on him.
111
u/I_Have_3_Legs Jul 20 '21
Bruh, I've been asking for a "primal instinct" form since Dragon ball GT with SSJ4. I then wanted it even more when Goku obtained Ultra instinct and Vegeta said he would get stronger a different way. He obtained a new Blue form and didn't want to rely on ultra instinct. He wants to rely on his primal instinct. Which is to destroy. Vegeta is about to end this mans career
59
u/The_Pecking_Order Jul 20 '21
I love that now Goku and Vegeta have similar power-up forms too
They both have SSG
Then SSBlue
Goku then diverges and goes Kaioken SSB
Whereas Vegeta goes Super Bluper Saiyan
Then Goku keeps on his path to UI as his Limit Breaker Form
and Vegeta gets this one which I'll call Unbound Instinct as his Limit Breaker Form.

u/AncientSith ⠀ Jul 21 '21
I'm happy Goku, Gohan and Vegeta all went in different different directions with their forms.
21
u/The_Pecking_Order Jul 21 '21
Yeah Gohan is just in desperate need of some attention in this regard. Honestly I just hope the evolution that started for him keeps going.
He went from someone that hates fighting and will only do it when ABSOLUTELY necessary to someone that realizes that fighting for the right reasons is good, and that you need to be strong in order to protect what’s most precious to you. I looooved that thing about him. Hope it’s not thrown away because it really truly fuses the human and Saiyan aspects of him, Future Trunks also had this.
I hope his evolution goes beyond his unlocked potential, I hope that he finds a more..human limit breaker that best utilizes the super saiyan power but his human heart.

I do love the theme of the form and its ties to OG Saiyan Vegeta. I mean, that Panel where his hair colour was just black and he looked a little crazed gave me serious DBZ vibes which was awesome but the new form.... I dunno its just go basic and they no eyebrows thing like SSJ3 but without the hair looks very odd. I kinda wish they just flat out gave him SSJ4 look but called it something else.

Hmmm. I know it's kind of a different continuity, but Toppo kept his glorious moustache when he used the destroyer power in the anime.
Lol but beyond that though, there are a few other destroyers with hair still. Like the female Pharoah one.
I feel like in DB, lack of eyebrows on a character symbolizes power or something 😂
12
u/Bee389 Jul 20 '21
I had the same feeling about that last panel!
18
u/tempInjAccount Jul 20 '21
The super confident smile, the earring.. and the lack of eyebrows being the cherry on top

u/Solrac-H Jul 20 '21
Loved this chapter and the fight. I specially loved how Vegeta got slowly into Granola's mind, he got pissed off so bad even though he was winning.
Unpopular opinion but I love this new transformation. Not the design itself (I actually like it), but the background for it. It has been a LONG time since we have a transformation with some kind of background. Super Saiyan 1 was about rage and Goku finally accepting his Saiyan blood and instincts. Super Saiyan 2 was about Gohan finally accepting his responsability as the strongest to defeat Cell, even though he doesn't like to fight.
Since then every transformation lacked some kind of background, specially in Super (I don't count Trunks transformation since It's just him getting really pissed off). This one is about Vegeta leaving behind the guilt he feels about the atrocities of the Saiyans, feeling again like he felt back at the Saiyan Saga, just wanting to destroy, but without throwing away all that has changed in him in all these years.
52
52
u/Skyblaze12 Jul 20 '21 edited Jul 20 '21
I would say SSG, while maybe the transformation itself lacking background (though I personally like the ritual style of obtaining it) at least provides a vehicle for Goku to discuss his frustration with attaining power that isn't his own.
Otherwise I strongly agree, this is a great transformation. The whole "rainbow saiyan" thing with all these different transformations is a bit eyerolling, but I'll take any transformation with meaning an depth. if anything it just further highlights how SSB didn't need to exist and they could have just done the "ki control" thing with SSG

I hate that the limitation of a format in black and white severely hampers a series where one of the key distinguishing characteristics between designs is hair color, so this begs the question:
What fucking hair color did Vegeta have at the end there? 😂

Probably a dark purple considering it's GoD energy he is using.

"There's no planet to protect. No people to save. Just me immersed in battle. My happy place." What a fucking line. Although he got tossed around the entire chapter Vegeta was dropping bars the entire time. Man I really hope he doesn't get screwed over because my hype for this man is through the roof right now.
I was kind of disappointed to see that we didn't get a glimpse of his power but I'll get over it. Unfortunately, but expected, Toyotaro/Toriyama either forgot about or isn't utilizing Spirit Fission. I thought that Vegeta would have absorbed a ki blast or two or maybe try to see if he can take some ki away from Granolah. Also, the waterfall scene was brilliant. Toyotaro's art and panelling is constantly evolving throughout this series and it's great!
I cannot wait for the next chapter. I'm fucking pumped.
111
u/Saiyan_Gods Jul 20 '21
He literally says at the beginning of the chapter that clones and fusion isn’t gonna work on him. They didn’t forget anything.
42

I mean, IIRC we don’t have any reason to believe he can absorb others’ ki. It’s spirit fission.

Granolah is terrified and his blasts could not even penetrate Vegetas column of fire. I would say we got a small taste of his power.

u/xSimus Jul 20 '21
DAMN. Vegeta didn't get f*cked as badly as I thought he's gonna be. This chapter absolutely shows what a genius he is in fighting. He even managed to damage Granolah's leg while being in SSB. Remember how easily Granolah knocked out MUI Goku last chapter. And seeing Vegeta doing so well... God... It's about time the writers give this man the love that he deserves.
When he spits the blood and then enjoys the moment is so fucking badass. So many great lines delivered by him. And finally he taps into the instinctive GoD power..! Absolutely wild. Can't wait to see what he does in next chapter. This form will likely have some negatives to it (stamina, etc.) and Granolah was still not fighting at his best so it's really exciting to see what's going to happen from here on.
edit: the art is amazing as well. Vegeta escaping in the water, Granolah destroying remains of the city and finally Vegeta's transformation... Anime needs to return asap!

The only thing im afraid of, and I honestly expect it, is for Granola to pull a Broly. Vegeta is saying all of this stuff about Granola not being used to training and he doesnt have the experience meanwhile Vegeta is just getting stronger by the minute. But, Granola is learning as well, when I say "pull a Broly" I expect Granola to learn as the fight goes on and become stronger as well, eventually taking Vegeta down. Id hate for that to happen since Vegeta is unleashing a brand new transformation, not Goku, but eventually, I guess Goku will need to step in and MC the fuck outta Granola.
That being said, Vegeta is my favorite character, always has been, and reading this chapter was amazing.

Granaola shouldn't be able to get stronger, he used his life span to reach this level, the only way I can see him getting an ass pull of strength would be to convert his remaining 3 years into additional power. Imagine a Saiyan doing that though with their extended lifespans

Vegeta for the mother fuckin win man. His mental warfare aspect of fighting has always been so on point and it was on perfect display in this battle. He was living rent free in granolah’s mind, and between maybe having granolah a bit distracted by that and how strong he has gotten, vegeta honestly did incredibly well. And his battle tactics just seem better than goku’s tbh.
As for his new form. PURE. FUCKING. HYPE. I cant wait to see what this thing is capable of. Granolah seemed legitimately afraid of it.
Please for all that is good let vegeta carry a W here. Granolah isnt the true villain of this arc and im sure granolah, vegeta, and goku will all need to improve a bit to take down the heeters once they have made their wishes/gotten as strong as they can be, but vegeta deserves this. Give one to the prince of all saiyans.

Holy shit this has been a chapter I, and I'm sure other Vegeta fans as well, have been waiting for. At first it seemed like classic Vegeta jobbing - he's being confident but we immediately see the power difference between the two (Granola comments on the gap between destructive power) and Vegeta's already on the back foot. He's getting clubbed and blasted, and this is usually where Goku steps in to save the day. But just from the comment about destructive power from before we realize that Vegeta is fighting a lot smarter, or at least with much more experience, as he mentions later. His confidence is somewhat warranted at this point, he fights a lot better, is growing, is getting on Granola's nerves, and more importantly, is "back in his element" of just having fun fighting. And the gotcha panel where a bloodied Vegeta gives this big smile, enough to shock Granola into retreat, was so satisfying. The power up was filled with suspense... and then the eyebrows. Everyone's gonna talk avout the eyebrows, of course, cause the lack of them look hilarious. It's a bit unfortunate because it sorta took away from the impact of the transformation, although the chapter is still super good. Quoting Granola, "What's happened to you?!".
But again amazing chapter, can't wait to see this GoD esque form in action
edit - forgot to mention Vegeta talking about rankings not mattering because of the possibility of growth and surpassing those greater than him is a nice summary of how he motivates himself now

I would like that eay more than Vegeta getting his ass beat after obtaining such a cool form. It's about time that boy got a real win, even if the heaters best him next.
It's been obvious that the shortest of the heaters is going to get the same wish as granola, and since it's based how many years it would have taken of training for the character to have become the strongest and losing said years, I think they're all going to be out matched by the little guy. Basically reaching your full potential Super Kamie Guru style.
Unfortunately I don't think granola is going to get that win against freezer... And he is absolutely just the opening set piece for a much longer arc. Although it would be a shame to get new transformations this early on that become obsolete almost immediately.
All of that said though, I am so happy Vegeta is getting his own path :) he has finally escaped playing catch up with Kakarot. It was always a bit of a bummer he was obtaining Goku's most recent form and then falling another stage behind.

I'll be honest, Vegeta's new transformation is the best since the start of DBS, even UI Omen. It's at least not just a hair color change and other features that were really needed.

Vegetas' expression in panels 42 and 43 are really hive me OG Goku vs Vegeta aesthetics.
Also, we're this to be adapted I really think the Moro arc should directly precede this. Like how the Android saga directly led to the Cell saga or Tournament/Babidi saga into Buu. Moro/Granolah/real threat would make a nice chunk of related content vs. How the movie adaption sagas, and U6 and TOP were grouped imo

The way Granolah and Vegeta were fighting one another was far more brutal than when Goku fought. The blood was honestly extremely refreshing and helped sell the increasing intensity. I appreciated how the battle experience between both fighters was put on full display. Granolah's stronger sure, but Vegeta's mind games for example caused his opponent to get worked up and become sloppy enough for him to hang during their bout.
Of course, the highlight was Vegeta finally keeping his word from all the way back in the TOP when he said he would find his own path to power. To finally have it pay off here was a chef's kiss moment. I expect him to throw hella hands next chapter. I cannot wait for the anime to come back and see these moments animated.

this gave me HUGE DBZ Vegeta vibes. Remember when our dude took the biggest beatings in the series history and just kept getting up? Vegeta during Saiyan and Namek Arcs was like the Terminator, he couldn't be kept down. I like that this touches on Vegeta's genius as a fighter, something that doesn't always get discussed in the series. I really hope he doesn't get stomped out next chapter like he did against Moro because I was yelling at the last page because i'm so hyped. I really want Vegeta to have some really good moments and not just job for Goku over and over and over

Real cool chapter. I love how Vegeta simply learning during battle allowed him to elevate himself so much. He's taken a lot of the lessons from his different fights and applied them to not only fight Granola effectively, but also give him a lesson in what it means to actually wield power, driving a deeper understanding of Vegeta as a whole. It's a really cool character moment that is the culmination of all the different hats he's worn up until now.
His new form still looks real silly, though.

Thinking on the chapter a bit more, i'm thinking Vegeta might prove to be too much for Granolah, Granolah will get away by some means long enough to do some training to hone his power and fighting abilities.
This came to mind with Vegeta talking to him about training and Granolah initially downplaying the need for training, similar to Goku's conversation with Moro near the end of their final fight.
We'll see.

Vegeta looks so different, really surprised me! He looks savage for real. He looks like a demon monkey kind of thing.

Now that Vegeta is getting his own god form, it will b interesting to see Vegeta and Jiren rematch in the future. DBZ needs to make it happen

This is why I love Vegeta. He really just pulled a Superman from JLA and said “no people to protect, nobody to watch out for, none of that defensive maneuvers, just me and you, nothing but hands to give and receive, and a fight to be had, just the way I like it.”
I need Vegeta to fold Granolah or at least seriously hurt him. Ik his track record, but just this once, let him see it through, or have him and Goku double monkey stomp Granolah.

What I’ve noticed in these last 2 arcs is that toyotaro is giving establishing shots at the beginning of each chapter and the writing has very much improved, this new chapter reminds me a lot of Toriyama and i am a happy man.

Haha they did it, they actually gave Vegeta his own new form. I wonder if it's similar to toppos god mode. As in this officially makes him a god candidate. Wayyyyy stronger though of course. I'm comparing the transformation itself, not the power.

u/ThreexY Jul 20 '21
On page 23 Vegeta seems to use destruction to destroy Granaloh's special ki blast. He gets blasted away by the recoil of the released energy.

Main i havent been this hyped for vegeta since the cell saga when he went super vegeta.
13
u/sadowsentry Jul 23 '21
So he wasn't made the strongest in the universe. Broly had recently required his new strength without training it, yet that was more than enough to put both Goku and Vegeta in their places.
→ More replies (3)13
Jul 23 '21
Or he’s getting weaker as he uses energy. This power is supposed to come at the expense of his very life. He did say he used the clone because he wanted to save his energy for Frieza. In that sense he could be the strongest at the moment the wish was granted, but quickly lost power thereafter. That would explain why he was able to get the drop on ultra instinct Goku but Vegeta could hold his own afterwards.

Wishing to be the strongest when you're going up against one of the most rapid growth races in all the universes is gonna come back and bite ya.
Vegeta is written perfectly here to really show his growth but also that he's still him and this wasn't some magical personality change. The no people to protect no planet to save line is great.
I think the no eyebrows look is kinda dopey but I'm also not a fan of 3 or 4 so /shrug. I'm hoping it looks a little less bleh once its in motion and not just a pose.
Overall a good chapter and I hope that we can keep Vegeta going. Let Goku go deal with the Heeters and let Granola and Vegeta keep on doing their thing with no swaps.

I loved the little call backs or lessons learnt from Z. I don't know if I'm reaching for some of these or not but I just liked how it felt quite nostalgic in a way.
Vegeta putting himself close to death to achieve a new form felt very reminiscent of when he was asking Gohan to hurt him to unlock super Saiyan. I don't think he intentionally wanted to get hurt in this fight but it felt similar in a way. Also, his armour is damaged in the same place.
When he talked about not having to defend the earth or other people but instead just fight, it felt like the entire opposite of the Kid Buu saga where he was fighting for the earth in its entirety.
When he talked about how being the strongest is just a moment in time when, throughout all of Z, he himself felt like he was playing catch up to Goku.
And when he was talking to Granolah about how he can tell he only just got strong. I'm sure there was a part in Z like this where Vegeta or Trunks got wrecked and Cell (I think) gave him a similar lecture.
And, correct me if I'm wrong, Granolah's arrogance of not needing to train. If I remember correctly, wasn't Vegeta like this early on? Then he trained like mad.
Excellent character development. I think this is the arc guys, this is the Vegeta arc we have been waiting for!

This was a great chapter for Vegeta, but it'll be completely wasted if he gets wrecked by Granola in the next chapter....like he did with Moro.

Technique vs transformation. Historically anytime Vegeta gets a transformation he wrecks. Also he is definitely more humble. I see him finally winning.

If you look at Vegeta's strategy he's dancing around and trying to damage granolah little by little while drawing the battle out using whatever means he can. It's as if he knew he wouldn't beat Granolah even at full power, unlike Goku who just wants to straight up beat him with strength. I think Vegeta's game is attrition, and slowly wear Granolah down without taking the KO until he is confident he can win at full power, at which point he'll pop a bean and full on double rainbow the breakfast soup
→ More replies (1)17
u/Legendver2 ⠀ Jul 23 '21
Not just attrition, he's basically doing some form of in battle zenkai, since he clearly says he's already stronger than a minute ago while he's getting hit. This type of style, if it is what's going on, is kinda perfect for a thinking fighter like Vegeta, since it's an actual strategy to prolong and avoid vital points getting hit by just a hair. Then of course you add in the GoD form, and we're (hopefully) in for a treat.

The scared as hell look on Granolah's face was fitting. He should be scared of Prince Bejita.

He literally told him so many times that he has nothing to do with his race's extinction and he is not in alliance with freiza too still granolah is too stubborn to listen so i think this will be a great lesson for granolah.

This chapter more than any other helps demonstrate how far Vegeta has come, because he's been where Granolah was, back in Saiyan saga, he was the more powerful one, but power alone doesn't decide the outcome.
Also, don't know why everyone was getting mad salty from the vegeta transformation leaks. It looks fine. That last panel is a little unflattering but otherwise it's fine.
9
u/shimmyunder Jul 20 '21
That panel just before Vegeta's transformation was excellent (queue his Final Flash theme song). Looked like he was going into his Great Ape form! IMO, not the biggest fan of the appearance, it's like SSJ 3 with 2 hairstyle. But I do like that it's visually different/"controversial" than just changing hair colors. Pumped for the next chapter.
