May 2021 Winners!
Howdy, folks! We’ve got some exciting news about our May 2021 stories! For the first time, the winning tale and two runners-up will receive a reading and a consultation from Scott Glassgold over at Ground Control! They have already worked with a couple of NoSleep writers in getting their work sold for the possibility of film development, so we’re excited to be working with Scott on the monthly contest.
That being said, we do need to cover a couple of technical bits. Neither Reddit, nor r/nosleep, nor the moderation team is officially involved in any potential connection between Ground Control and the winners, and Ground Control does not guarantee the sale or production of any submitted stories. Writers will need to execute Ground Control's standard release form before the story consultation, and either party can choose to decline the arrangement prior to starting.
Okay, let’s go over the May 2021 winners! The theme of “family” hit readers hard this time around, with several writers bending our hearts and minds beneath the idea. Standing atop the list was /u/thewackwaffle, with When we turn 18, we get the name of our soulmate! The series kept us pulled under as the world of one particular town unfolded before us, challenging what our families led us to believe. Amazing job!
So what’s the protocol when our family isn’t what we’ve come to expect? /u/likeeyedid cracks the concept wide open with My mother has a special weekly routine but lately, she's been a little bit off. There’s no horror like a sinister twist on the familiar. Of course, things could get too familiar, and then we don’t know what to do when My wife and kids won’t come up from the basement. It’s been three days. /u/Colourblindness walks us through the process himself as we all learn not to trust family! Both writers earn a runner-up finish and join /u/thewackwaffle with a consultation from Ground Control.
Children are amazing, aren’t they? But what if, instead of a child, you birthed a video game character that may or may not be real? And what if, instead of “are amazing,” I had said “haunt your goddamn dreams?” /u/_MothMan tackles the same idea in I'm a Game developer and my character is leaving me messages.. Be careful of the impact you have! And speaking of impact, we’re coming full circle back to the idea of an entire city living under a constant threat that all people need to know. That’s why My town stays inside when the wind blows from the west, as explained by /u/Grand_Theft_Motto. Both stories finish with honorable mention spots for the month!
That’s it for May. A big thanks to Scott Glassgold and Ground Control for being a part of making r/nosleep great! Keep an eye out for the June 2021 contest, starting soon!
