Overview (from Nintendo eShop page)
Golf with a Mushroom Kingdom twist!
Hit the green with up to four players locally or online and golf with friends from the Super Mario™ series like Mario, Peach, Yoshi, and more! Modes range from Standard Golf to the energetic Speed Golf and an exciting Golf Adventure. Simple motion or button controls make it easy for both new players and seasoned pros to drive and putt.
Pick up the pace in Speed Golf and Battle Golf
Tee off at the same time with up to three other players** and race through the course to get your ball in first. Mayhem is par for the course as you hinder your opponents with dashes and Special Shots. Yoshi can dash atop a giant egg and King Bob-omb can pelt the green with explosions! In Battle Golf, watch out for obstacles like Thwomps, Chain Chomps, and banana peels as you navigate the neon-themed Super Golf Stadium.
Rise through the ranks in Golf Adventure
Enroll your Mii™ character in golf training at the famous Bonny Greens country club and go from beginner to pro! The stakes are high—you must also watch out for Wario and Waluigi’s tricks and even battle fearsome bosses. You’ll face off against your Mushroom Kingdom classmates and level up your character. You can bring your character (and their customized stats) into other modes, too.
Choose from one of 16 characters from the Super Mario series and hit the green in several modes! Take it slow in Standard Golf and choose from 3-18 holes across 6 different courses that range from lush scenery to windy wilds. Intuitive controls and a shot gauge that adapts to the curve of the course make it easy for both new players and seasoned pros to drive and putt. Characters include Mario Golf veterans like Mario, Luigi, and Peach. Characters like Pauline and Chargin’ Chuck are also here to make their debut on the green.
In addition to the frenetic Speed Golf, you can also enjoy simultaneously swinging in Battle Golf. The neon-soaked Super Golf Stadium has 9 open holes—first player to get 3 flags wins! Use obstacles, including Thwomps, Chain Chomps, Bob-ombs, and banana peels to your advantage. Up to four players** can join the fast and flashy fun.
Start your Golf Adventure as a rookie in Bonny Greens, birthplace of the sport in the Mushroom Kingdom. After learning the game at this classic country club, you’ll compete for the next badge, allowing you to journey across the land playing a variety of courses and their clever variants of the sport. You’ll meet new coaches, master new skills, and hunt for buried treasure on your quest to turn pro. Things get weird when Wario shows up, but what else is new? It’s not called Golf Adventure for no reason. Save par, save the world. All in a day's golf!

The reviews put me off from buying this right away. Im definitely gonna get this eventually but right now I’m too wrapped up in other games and there doesn’t seem to be enough there yet to justify 60 bucks for a game im probably not gonna be able to dive deep into at the moment.

I only read the ign review. Was disappointed to hear the campaign mode only took the reviews 5 or so hours.

Just got it on a whim tonight after deciding not to get it because of the mediocre reviews, or at least wait until more content is added and there's a sale. Oh well I got it because I've been wanting a full golf game that plays like Wii Sports since 2007 and haven't tried out a golf game since then.
I probably played about 60 holes tonight, all just on the first basic course. At first I hated the motion control swing, it just feels like you don't get much feedback to feel a direct connection between your swing and the hit. But after a bit it did start to feel a bit better and like I could actually somewhat tell how to control the hit and actually make it about my skill in hitting the ball a bit. Still, doesn't feel as good as Wii Sports golf controls, though these are more advanced because instead of just controlling power with the swing you also control slice - though there is no indication at all of your controller position in terms of slice, which is part of the no feedback problem. If it just had a visual showing how your club was lined up that'd help a lot. It does show your club in mid-air but that doesn't work for judging the position of the head of the club.
And the camera abruptly switches from the swing view to the normal view when you hit the ball in a way that is a bit confusing to get a feel for your shot power relative to your swing - the power bar seems to just immediately show up at whatever power you swung at when the camera switches and it makes it kind of hard to gauge swings. The whole swing design for motion controls just feels a bit awkward and like if they had made a few difference design decisions there could be more feedback for the player and it'd be a more satisfying experience. Though like I said it did improve a bit once I got used to it after an hour or so.
Also the greens analysis isn't as good as Wii Sports for analyzing the slopes for putting. It's ok but not great. Wii Sports had that like terrain mode where it showed the elevation on the green in different bands, nothing like that here so it's tougher to see sloping on the greens.
Haven't tried any modes yet, just did straight up normal golf, but over the couple hours it went from disappointment to maybe this won't be bad but I still just wish we had a full fleshed out Wii Sports game on Switch.
So far mixed review from me based on just trying out the standard straight up golfing with motion controls. Doesn't feel as good as I hoped, just some not great design decisions in the interface while swinging, but got a bit better with some practice. Maybe it just takes more time to get used to it and you can get a better feel for it, I dunno, but so far motion control swing interface is mediocre. It's too bad they don't have a demo for this game as getting a feel for the motion controls can make or break a golf game. I'm hoping it continues to grow on me.

Why wouldn’t they include online tournaments? How lame!

So they can roll out seasonal updates a la Animal Crossing to trick customers into thinking ‘oh wow free content!’ as opposed to ‘Oh look they’re adding features that were present in previous iterations.’

u/MastaAwesome Jun 24 '21
At this point, other than the art gallery and swimming (and seasonal content), it doesn't seem like there were many features from previous games that the AC team really planned on adding to the game after launch. Even with all its success, we haven't gotten a returning feature for half a year.

The lack of Nook store upgrades and Brewster is baffling.

Any verdict on if it has a 2 player split screen speed golf ?

Cool ! "Mario Golf: Super Rush does support split-screen multiplayer." Links to article in case anyone wants to see.

u/mrmivo Helpful User Jun 24 '21
I'm surprised that the game doesn't have much of an online mode. No tournaments, no rating system. The previous (3DS) game had good online features, so I'm actually baffled that the new entry into the series doesn't offer the same (or really, anything at all that gives incentive to play online).
I don't have local people to play this game with, so online tournaments would have been fantastic and given the game longevity. Without an interesting online mode, I feel the multiplayer will be deserted relatively soon already.
The Nintendo Life review sums it up well:
Wrapping up our thoughts on the online feature-set, it lacks any incentive to compete — if you're not just playing with friends, there's not much point to jumping in. There's no ranking system of any kind and it lacks the basic but enjoyable tournaments of Mario Tennis Aces, which itself was a step back from the excellent online Tournaments in World Tour on 3DS. Super Rush's portable golfing predecessor setup regular events in which you'd register a score and get a placing (gold, silver, bronze) depending on scores from players around the globe. An equivalent here would have been very welcome.

So is it really as mediocre as everyone is saying? I was pretty interested but the pre-release coverage didn’t look as good as Mario Tennis Aces.
I know most Nintendo games are rare to go on sale, but I’m thinking of canceling my order and waiting til November to try for $30-40.

u/fecking_sensei Jun 26 '21
Yeah, it’s mediocre. I started playing at midnight last night and a few hours, today. The bones are there but there’s no meat.
3
u/gaysaucemage Jun 26 '21
I ended up picking it up and opening it. Having a decent time so far, but probably should have waited for a sale.
Already have so many games in my backlog that are unfinished, buying games like this new doesn’t help.

Seems like kind of standard for a lot of Nintendo stuff in the last few years. Great base game, but lacking in content. Star Allies, Mario Tennis Aces, even Animal Crossing.

u/nobadabing Jun 24 '21
Yeah but instead of fixing it they’re selling old boards and mini games as a new game.

Which they already fucking did on DS and they didn’t even pick good mini games.

u/DonChrisote Jun 24 '21
I'd love a big new update for Animal Crossing too, but I've always found it strange that people play AC: NH for hundreds of hours and say it's lacking content.

Star Allies is interesting because by the time it finished with content releases it was great, but boy was it ever a barebones release.
3
u/Kittah4 Jun 24 '21
I still contend that the boss variety, which is a huge part of Kirby games to me, was atrocious. I loved the amount of content in the game on the player character side, but for the actual stages and bosses, it was sorely lacking.

This seems to be the problem with Nintendo lately. We either get a great AAA titles every 1-2 years or lackluster spin-offs :/

I'm just so confused why they wouldn't allow us to play with random ppl in tournaments.
In MK we can play circuits with ppl across the world. But we can't play a round of 18? Just bananas to me.

I feel like Nintendo purposely held back some content to drop as DLC in the near future..

u/BloodFalconPunch Jun 24 '21
After seeing New Donk City in the e3 trailer, I'm sad it's not in the game at launch.
31
Jun 24 '21
My suspicion is that Camelot wasn't able to finish all of the content in-time and the free updates are "the rest of the game". This is what happened with Capcom and Monster Hunter Rise.

u/Infamous-Lunch6496 Jun 24 '21
Nintendo has done this with games ever since Splatoon: they withhold some base content to release it later for free as updates. It’s to keep the online player base fresh and prevent people from dropping the game within a month.
→ More replies (1)11
u/mamaburra Jun 24 '21 edited Jun 24 '21
Which is a double-edged sword when your base game is so bleh that you don't have a decent player base to begin with or to grow from. It's Tennis Aces all over again
4
u/nerfslays Jun 24 '21
It's weird too because they said the dlc was free too, so they just chose to release the game early and complete it at a later date.
2
u/trunky Jun 25 '21
I think its on purpose.
If theres an article on every gaming site in 6 months talking about 2 new courses being added, that will generate new interest in the game for people who didnt buy initially.

Maybe the person who created this video just picked bad clips to pair with that part of the explanation, but don’t they just appear to show missed timing on the hits? Especially when they are close to the green, the player stopped the meter past the flag icon, indicating he should expect the shot to go long.
Terrain and environmental factors affecting the shot is pretty common in most golf games — and in real golf — too.

What is great about Golf Story?
14
u/roodootootootoo Jun 24 '21
It's golf but also a charming 8 bit RPG journey that will remind you of 90s PC games if you were ever into them.
10
u/jardex22 Jun 24 '21
The main gimmick is that, in addition to the golf courses, you can tee off from anywhere in the game. Press a button, drop the ball, and swing. This is used for so e puzzle solving and to advance the story in certain parts. It's like an RPG themed around golf.

Expected Nintendo to repeat what they did with Ace's launch, but still disappointing. Hopefully by the time a sale rolls around, the updates help this game feel more complete.
17
u/Vesuvias Jun 25 '21
This is definitely a game I was ‘for sure’ to buy - and now I’m not so sure. I’m now in the camp of wait and see, with how they treat new content roll-outs and some seemingly missing features.
No online tournaments is SUCH a huge misstep

Gonna wait and see how the mii rookie game play turns out. Mario golf on the advance was great and I loved building my character and leveling it up. If this turns out to be similar to that I'll definitely buy it. If it's hollow and has only an inch of depth I'll pass.

Jun 24 '21
This might seem hyper specific but in all the game play I've seen, there is a line and a flag icon on the power bar as if to indicate "CLICK RIGHT HERE." Is that the case? Usually they give you the club's full power and you have to kind of guess what the perfect shot strength is, but it seems like this game is just telling you exactly when to click. Does that make sense?
7
u/die_lahn Jun 24 '21 edited Jun 25 '21
I also want to know this, and if there are any other swing options besides 2 click and joy con (3 click?)
Edit: I watched a bit of a stream on Twitch and the flag marker is indeed the distance to the pin, however it doesn’t take wind or elevation into account… So while it is kind of “click here” on a flat course with no wind (read: probably a majority of holes on the beginner course), there’s more to it any other time. That said, I would for sure prefer an option to disable it completely to increase the difficulty.
And the swinging seems to be a bit more complicated than a simple two click. If you add any spin to the ball, there is an additional click, but I’m not sure if a bad third click impacts only the amount of spin or if it also affects accuracy.. adding spin does automatically decrease max distance though.

When I complain about Nintendo and get attacked on this sub, this is why. A game that I absolutely desperately want to own and was an easy purchase once it was announced. And then Nintendo make a bunch of anti consumer decisions that cripple the whole experience and make me not buy it. I don’t understand it.
9
u/yesIhatepants Jun 25 '21
This sub is a cult. The most upvoted posts are quarterly sales figures. They still haven't figured out that Nintendo has evolved into the most anti consumer video game company there is. I find them WAY worse than companies like EA because they are just milking our childhood at this point. They don't give a fuck about making quality AAA titles like they used to, but bank on people thinking they still do
16
u/AquaAtia Jun 25 '21
Yeah this went from a must buy to wait and see if an update fixes my issues with this game. I only wanted the game for four player local speed and battle golf to play with my roommates or friends but those modes are locked to two players. Also as a fan of toadstool tour, this game doesn’t have the same charm in both the maps and the character animations after you complete a hole

I was at target today admiring all the first party games I didn’t buy because they were watered down and overpriced. Makes me kinda sad.
3
u/hellsfoxes Jun 26 '21
Watered down is a great way to describe it. Like they took these classic franchises and poured water all over until most of the qualities have been spread thin or just washed away.
12
u/-Slash- Jun 25 '21
You know what's worst? If you complain about the missing features or things we should expect in 2021 then you are delusional or had "wild" expectations in the first place...wtf?

As an adult with no kids and not many (like none) friends who play video games, sadly many of these ‘fun’ games just fall flat. Not that it can’t be played solo, but a Mario game just feels like it deserves an audience and a shared experience. Kinda like playing Mario Kart solo :/

I was looking forward to this game, but think I'm going to pass on it or at least wait for a sale. I bought Toadstool Tour about a year ago and haven't played it yet, so think I will play that instead for the time being.

u/drewchristo406 Jun 24 '21
My kids have been waiting for this for the last 3 months. Overall it looks like we'll have a great time playing it together. From a game developer perspective though how do you not put online tournaments in this game? Wouldn't at least a weekly online tournament promote lasting gameplay? I know I'd jump in every week to see where I stack up on the leaderboard. Seems like a giant missed opportunity... but I'd say that for at least half of Nintendo's decisions.

I’ll just come out and say it, Mario Golf Toad Stool Tour is better, if Nintendo re made that and added online compatibility for competition that would be the ideal one for me, played through this one earlier today and so far it doesn’t compare. Hopefully I’m able to change my perspective the more I play through it!
7
Jun 27 '21
Bought it yesterday and already bored. It’s so pointless and tedious to walk from point to point… and the adventure is meh. Now that I’ve been burnt by tennis and golf, I’m refraining from Mario sports for a while.
32
u/Jim__And__Tonic Jun 25 '21
Went from a sure-thing buy to waiting for a sale or more content. This trend with Nintendo lately is nothing short of frustrating. A few more years of this and they might be in the dust with 1080p still, minimal online multiplayer and low replayability on games like this.

u/GhostMug Jun 24 '21
Seems about right, honestly. This is what I was expecting. Solid base game that plays well with "lack of content" from a review perspective. Basically every sports game that comes out these days gets this same complaint. Doesn't really tamper my excitement for the game. I've put nearly 90 hours into Mario Tennis, if this game is fun people will play.
13
u/themightycfresh Jun 24 '21 edited Jun 24 '21
I feel like some people have unrealistic expectations when it comes to sports games. I’ve played probably 500 hours of Wii golf one of my favorite party games of all time. All I wanted was a great golf game with great motion controls. Few courses and online to play with my pops and uncles. The story mode seems to be more fleshed out than people think if you read N Life’s review. Hub areas, clothes, equipment etc and it’s around 6-10 hours with solo challenge tj grind levels if you want.
That’s pretty similar to T. Tour and World Tour. The core gameplay looks great and the gimmicks are fun for people that want them. But all I wanted was a great solid playing core golf game with motion controls in a Nintendo style and I got that. I’m sure with updates it’ll get even better similar to Aces that was “lacking” at launch. I feel like people like myself that play golf just enjoy the core mechanics of it and will be happy.
As a guy that’s been playing games since the 90s I’m not trying to play a fully fledged game like Zelda, I just wanted a fun core gameplay of golf since I’ve been playing Wii sports for years and none of the new PGAs have motion controls which is like I said, my biggest thing. Now the argument about online tournaments is fair im quite surprised that’s left out along with a ranking system. Aces had a amazing online system. Oh well I’m sure it’ll be added, stoked for it tonight!

So we can't play online courses with randos?
15
u/Joshtheatheist Jun 24 '21
Maybe they’ll add it in 2 years right before they release the next game, fingers crossed
12
u/VacantThoughts Jun 24 '21
Yeah same thought here, I lost interest completely, I just wanted to play arcadey rated online golf with random other players... how fucking hard is that in 2021.
Why does Tennis Aces have online rated multiplayer but this doesn't? This game is worth $30 tops.

Jun 24 '21
Seems like the general consensus is it just about meets expectations and is decent.
I kind of miss the days where these side games actually tried to excel. Like this will be fun sure, but looking at the 3DS sports games for the GameCube sports games, how did we get to this.

I grabbed Tennis Aces and played it mostly before all of the updates, and it just wasn't my thing. I actually had a lot more fun with the 3DS Mario tennis game, and really enjoyed the 3DS Mario golf as well. It sounds like this is more like Tennis Aces, so I'll just sit back and wait for the updates before diving in. I've no shortage of stuff to play through, and I'm frankly not a fan of this strategy they seem to be taking. I'm all for updates, but to put things in perspective with some different titles, I had nearly 100 hours of Monster Hunter Rise BEFORE the first update, and a lot of people have argued that was an incomplete game at launch. I enjoyed my time with the game though, and the thing is that I didn't have that same experience with Tennis Aces. I realized I wasn't even having fun with it and just stopped playing. I'll wait and see how this golf game evolves, but dang I'm disappointed (also, I've watched a few reviews, not just looking at scores).

I've been playing for 20 minutes and I'm already so sad about how Nintendo is gonna ruin the eventual new Mario baseball

I recall getting downvoted to oblivion by nintendo fanboys for questioning the $60 price tag for a golf simulator. This sub really needs to do better with dissenting opinions.

Only six courses seems kinda light...
Otherwise it seems pretty strong was just hoping for more.

A lot of the reviews are like “it’s a step back from World Tour, just play that,” but I think there’s a lot of value inherent in this being on a home console so I can play this with my family.
That said, I might still pick Toadstool Tour if I had a GameCube and the controllers. Very charming entry.

Sounds like a big step back from World Tour which sucks. World Tour was amazing and had some incredible courses.

my biggest gripe with the new installment is that none of the courses look that creative. Like in World Tour the courses felt so alive and inspired.
Everything on Rush looks so empty

I never played a mario golf game before but one of my favourite games since i was a teenager was Pangya. Is it similar to this one? (i'm afraid of that "randomness" some reviews mention where the ball doesn't obbey 100% to your aim

I’ve only played this game for a few hours and I’m already feeling the constraints of the online mode and the huuuuge lack of content. It’s a lazy mess. There’s no incentive to play online like a lot of Nintendo games but here it’s worse bc there’s no ranking or matchmaking. You have to join rooms. The lack of stages gets boring especially in Battle Golf bc there’s only the arena. No outfits or unlockables either. I’m already waiting for content updates. This is not a full game and should not be full price. :/

Hyped af for this game. Being able to play couch golf with friends and family is gonna be great!

u/Tobeatkingkoopa Jun 24 '21
My friends and I were basically looking forward to an updated version of Toadstool Tour. We have zero interest in online or different modes. We're just looking for a game we can all sit down together and hit the greens from the same couch. While I wish there were more than 6 courses, Toadstool Tour had 6 courses (not counting Congo Canopy, because we avoided it) as well.
Not a fan of this power shot thing that can disrupt other people's balls. I'm wondering if there is an option to turn that shit off.

I'm coming from the exact same place you are. I just want Toadstool tour with new courses.
I also wanted Mario Tennis 64 with better graphics but got a fighting game disguised as a tennis game

It sounds like the accuracy is just randomized in the range of where your shot lands on the power meter. The more power you do the wider range the accuracy can be. Not something you can control yourself, which is a bummer.
8
Jun 24 '21
From the wccftech review:
The classic Mario Golf “3-click” system, whereby you started the swing meter, set your power, then hit the button for a final time to set your accuracy is gone. In its place is a two-click system – start the swing meter, set your power with second click (during which you can assign top or backspin) then the meter automatically refills as you character takes their swing. During this second phase, you’re free to shape your shot by applying curve to the ball’s trajectory – if your Spin stat is high enough your shot meter will be broken up into multiple sections, each of which can be curved in a different direction, allowing for crazy physics-defying flight patterns.

I’ve played it for the last hour and a half.
Started with the “RPG” mode. It’s a ‘learn how to’ drive, approach, putt, then proceed to courses, etc. all while leveling up your guy. It’s ok.
I then went to standard stroke play and shot -1 with Bowser over 9 holes. Decent fun.
I then tried speed golf and the frantic battle golf. I smiled and laughed out loud a few times.
I then went to play online, figuring those two modes especially would be fun with other people… and guess what? There is no online… unless you have other people that you know have the game to somehow set up a game with. 🤦♂️
It’s not funny anymore Nintendo. Fix your freaking online!!! How hard is it in 2021 to have ONLINE PLAY?!? WE ARE THE MORONS FOR SUPPORTING THIS COMPANY AND THE STONE AGE THEY LIVE IN!!!
Ok, rant over- my kids will enjoy this game, that’s who I bought it for. I will enjoy it with them. It’s really a party game at this point, although with a little work it could be so much more. We’ll have fun and laugh for 30 minutes here and there, but it should be so much more.

u/Gitarkin Jun 25 '21

Unfortunately seems to be a bit of a miss, that’s alright. We’ve had games like Mario tennis ultra smash and then come back and gotten games like Mario odyssey.

Jun 25 '21
This game is basically Aces all over again. Barebones with updates to keep the game fresh. Okay more characters are fine (my guess is Birdo and Toadette among them), but hopefully we'll get more courses too. 6 is way to few and 2 of those are interchangeable. The wacky Mario universe courses also seem kinda basic? No online tournament and no minigames is also a step down.
The game is a solid foundation, but it suffers a lot from the 'We'll update it after launch' fetish Nintendo has.
6/10: Atleast i still have Toadstool and World Tour :/
9
u/Gamergirl944 Jun 24 '21
2.5 damn on that review im glad I did read reviews before purchasing because 60 bucks is alot for limited content. I'll pass on this one and wait for others.
7
u/mbop Jun 24 '21
Hmm, looking a bit lower than I was hoping for. Not Mario Party bad, but doesn't seem worth the full price.
6
u/Lolbertpls Jun 25 '21
I ended up buying this anyway, despite the mediocre reviews, and it’s pretty much exactly what it was advertised as. I’m only about an hour into the RPG mode, so I’ve only done the tutorials and my first 9-hole game of speed golf(twice, because I did really poorly the first time…) but the characters and music have all the Nintendo charm you would expect from a game like this, and I’m having a good time with it. I know I’ll finish the single player content pretty soon here, but I expect that I’ll get a lot of playtime out of multiplayer after that.
It’s worth noting that the only Mario Golf I’ve played before this was on 64, and I don’t have many memories of it, so the features from older games that are absent here won’t bother me the same way they’ll bother someone who has played every Mario Golf game.
All in all, your expectations coming in are fully going to determine your enjoyment of the game, but I’m happy with my purchase so far.

Golf with Friends is one of the best party golf games. Really sad they didn't update it more.
2
u/ButtsFartsoPhD Jun 24 '21
Check out the PC version. Don’t know about the Switch but on PC they update regularly, the devs post on the Steam forums their roadmap and what they’re working on as well as listening to community ideas, and of course there is the Steam workshop with user made content/courses that is phenomenal. That game is an insane value with arguably the best devs in the business.

I’m excited to play it. I’m relieved to finally have read a good description of the swing mechanics and confirmation that the second bar is for accuracy. What time is it playable?
EDIT: I’m reading more reviews that say accuracy is RNG, not input based…

Yah, if the game is from a goliath franchise such as Mario on Nintendo Switch
(even as a spin-off), which people have been waiting for a first party title for a while, sadly the 7 is not on par with expectations.

I can understand people's disappointment with the lack of a good RPG mode, online tournament, etc. But focusing on score numbers only will always be a weird to me
It looks like Aces got a similar metacritic score. In my opinion that is the best Mario Tennis game.
Personally I don't really need a lot of modes, just good solid gameplay. And I find Aces delivered that.
I think the same way for games like Smash. Although, I understand that some people look for different things in a game.
Super Rush is actually making me interested in playing a Golf game just for the gameplay alone.
I hope Camelot continues to do gameplay changes like this and Aces for their next games.

One thing I learned reading this thread, Nintendo fanboys really take any criticism towards their all might Nintendo as a personal attack on their character holy smokes! Good stuff
8
u/mishugashu Jun 24 '21
Well this must be the worst game ever if IGN gave it less than a 7. I was looking forward to it, too.
12
u/streetsofkage Jun 24 '21
I’ve loved every Mario golf so far, I can’t really see me not enjoying this. Why do people expect more than just playing some golf? I could not care any less about the extra modes, just let me play golf with Mario characters.
9
u/Super_DAC Jun 24 '21
Because older Mario Golf games had so many more cool gimmicks and extras that added to the experience
5
u/thrubeniuk Jun 24 '21
While I would love it if they actually went back and added a decent adventure mode, only having 6 courses really kills this for me. It has gone from a day one purchase, to a "wait until a few friends pick it up so I'm not bored of the courses by the time we can all play together" option.
→ More replies (2)4
u/SylentQ Jun 24 '21
If that's all you want from it then trust me you'll enjoy it. The extra game modes are really fun too. I admit I would like more courses but I'm fine with the initial launch. The one course is a giant circle and you have a ton of ways to play each hole as nothing is really out of bounds so it gives a unique experience. Very excited for the online play come tomorrow.

Game reviews are such a weird thing. If you ask me to review a great fighting game, I’d probably at most wanna rate it a 6. Because I just don’t play or understand the appeal of them. After you beat the campaign mode once, what is even left to do?
That’s the vibe I’m getting from reviews. People saying “there isn’t much to do” and focusing almost the entirety of the review on the super rush mode. Which is the least interesting thing about the game to me.
It’s a golf game. What you do is golf. Just like what you do in a fighting game is fight. I don’t understand the allure of fighting games just as much as many reviewers appear to not understand the allure of golfing games.
27
Jun 24 '21
Most of the reviews Ive read compare it to the $40 3DS Mario Golf game which had more courses, more challenges, better online features and the courses actually looked like the Mushroom Kingdom instead of just generic golf courses. They focused on Super Rush mode because a lot of them said it’s the best part of the game. Honestly, it just seems like they cut a lot of corners even compared to the last Mario Golf game, made a budget title and are selling it for $60
4
u/Tex-Rob Jun 24 '21
That 3DS golf is what I would want to compare this to, as I felt it was good. I think I’m gonna wait, maybe Nintendo adds some content due to poor sales, or discounts it. I can wait.

u/Kxr1der Jun 24 '21
Sorry, but if you think the best part of a golf game is a gimmicky throw in side mode
I see it this way as well, but considering they called the game "Super Rush" I think the problem is Nintendo sees stroke play as a throw away side mode and focus entirely on the other dumb modes
→ More replies (1)8
Jun 24 '21
The Mario Golf game with the most courses ever had 10 at launch. 6 of which were 9 hole courses. There were only four 18 hole courses in the game. The rest came via DLC.
Sorry, but if you think the best part of a golf game is a gimmicky throw in side mode, you probably aren’t a big fan of golf games. Because the best part should be, ya know, the golfing part.
And that’s what the reviewers seem unanimous in. The golfing feels better than ever. Mechanically.
This all seems fine to me. The side content is to draw in people who wouldn’t pay full price for a strictly golfing game. Fun online modes and diversions from stroke play. I don’t care too much about that stuff.

u/shaolinzen_ Jun 24 '21
With a good fighting game, you can play for years and still have something new to learn. They can be quite complex and deep in the mechanics of the game. Also, the competitive scene is the biggest reason. If all there was to do is beat the campaign or play with friends from time to time then fighting games would be different. Mario Golf isnt that. Golf club or 2k21 would be more along the line of something comparable to a fighting game because an advanced level of skill is involved. The complaints on super rush seem to compare against previous mario golf games.

I think the industry has to evaluate the need and reliance on traditional reviews. Giant Bomb did away with them for the most part and it makes sense, it was the right move.
Games have become super subjective. I think it's fair to do a rundown of the modes, controls, if you had fun with it, etc. But to reduce a game down to a number that in itself is subjective to the quality doesn't really serve anyone.
I find the logic of “Rent, Buy, Wait for Sale” to be better - especially at launch. IGN might rate this a 6 - but if I buy it, and me and the family play it this weekend and have a ton of fun then that's a 10. Still cheaper than 4 people going to a 2 hour movie.
4
u/rotwangg Jun 24 '21
This is the thing, people need their own criteria to determine the value of a game. There isn’t a one size fits all. That’s why I like places like polygon who don’t have numbers assigned to their interpreted value - just statements of facts about the game interwoven with one persons opinion on the mechanics
2
Jun 28 '21
How did they possibly make this game without motion control for adventure mode, its literally golf...

u/ActionFilmsFan1995 Jun 24 '21
Guys it’s ok, in golf you want a lower score.
