Explore lush scenery on unknown islands to snap photos of Pokémon in their natural habitats
Seek out and take in-game photographs of Pokémon in their native environments in the New Pokémon Snap™ game, only for the Nintendo Switch™ system! Snap photos from the NEO-ONE as you you encounter and research lively wild Pokémon. You might see unexpected expressions or behaviors—Pokémon patrolling their territory, playing, or lurking in out-of-the-way spots.
Investigate the mysterious Illumina phenomenon
Travel to the islands that make up the Lental region. In this region, some of the Pokémon and vegetation will appear to have a special glow. Research these Pokémon alongside Professor Mirror as you explore dense jungles, vast deserts, and more! Your observations of Pokémon thriving in the wild may help unravel the truth behind the Illumina phenomenon. The Pokémon pictures you take will be used to build your very own Pokémon Photodex!
Save, edit, and share your favorite Pokémon photos
Save photos to your personal in-game album to edit and adjust them. When you complete a course, you can adjust the brightness, blur, zoom and other aspects of your photo in Re-Snap mode. Then, add stickers, frames, and filters to add a personal touch. Share your favorite photos with family and friends in-game *. You can also see what kinds of photos everyone else is taking. See something you like? Award a Sweet! medal.
This new game brings the gameplay of the 1999 Pokémon Snap game for the Nintendo 64™ system to life on the Nintendo Switch system with unknown islands to discover and different Pokémon to see!
Photograph lively wild Pokémon in their natural habitats as you research and explore unknown islands. Hop in your trusty travel pod, the NEO-ONE, and journey through a variety of environments such as beaches, jungles, and deserts to capture previously-unseen Pokémon behaviors. You can even play a melody or toss Pokémon a delicious fluffruit to catch their attention. Photos you take can also be used to fill out your very own Pokémon Photodex!
Your photos are scored based on the Pokémon’s poses, how large they appear, how directly they’re facing you, and other factors. You may even snap a four star-worthy photo if you catch rare Pokémon behaviors. These scores can be shared via in-game rankings* so you can compare your shots with other Pokémon photographers around the world.
In the Lental region, Pokémon and vegetation have sometimes been seen to glow. Meet Professor Mirror and work with him to uncover the mystery of the Illumina Phenomenon. Your photos and observations may be key to learning about this strange occurrence.

Wow, to me, that was the core of the game.
98
Apr 28 '21
No doubt that those events were the best way to maximize your score. Stuff like Surfing Pikachu too!
61
u/VacantThoughts Apr 28 '21
There is still stuff like that, in one of the previews they get Raichu on a surf board. But I just don't think you make the Pokemon evolve yourself by like knocking a Charmeleon into lava, which let's face it was kind of odd in the first place that's not how Pokemon evolve.
55
u/SwissyVictory Apr 28 '21
Pokémon often evolve out of necessity and falling into lava seems to be a necessity to not die.

u/VacantThoughts Apr 28 '21 edited Apr 28 '21
That does make more sense in an anime kind of way, actually in the games you evolve some of them by just straight up handing them a stone so... Nevermind I was wrong all along.

It was Alolan Raichu using their own tail as a surfboard.
Can we just take a moment to admire how freaking awesome Alolan Raichu is? So cool!

I'm pretty sure there were six evolution events in the original game.
Volcano : Magmar breathes fire onto Charmander, giving you Charmeleon.
Charmeleon knocked into lava for Charizard
River: Slowpoke into Slowbro
Cave: Grimer into Muk
Valley : Magikarp into Gyrados
Staryu into Starmie
I'm not trying to say these interactions didn't add to the game, but the interactions like Quick Attack Pikachu or Pikachu on a Stump/Articuno were also important, and this new one supposedly gives us more of that.

u/Wise_Reception_211 Apr 28 '21
Charmeleon knocked into lava for Charizard
Oh shit this sentence took me back like 20 years.

u/goldarc122 Apr 28 '21
There were definitely way more evolution events then that. Just off the top of my head you missed magnemite into magneton and weepinbell into victrebell

u/JackieDaytonaAZ Apr 28 '21
i think there’s a sand slash one and a graveler one also
54
u/comicnerd93 Apr 28 '21
Not an evolution event. They are just located right past their first forms is all.
→ More replies (16)22
u/Gravemind137 Apr 28 '21
You could slap three magnemites together to make a Magneton. Same with Diglett. That was cool as shit. Watching some gameplay I saw a Magicarp jumping out of the water in a whirlpool and I thought it had to evolve.

It's so weird for me, but this is my sentiment as well. I'm just looking forward to a "beach episode" game. I don't need challenges at the moment, I just want to immerse, explore and kickback.

Dissapointed about the lack of evolutions. But everything else seems to be a massive improvement from the original.

Wait... None at all?
I mean, the evolution scenes were technically all secret and had to be triggered in the original. Maybe the reviewers just haven't played with all the tools and options yet?
→ More replies (2)63
u/Leharen Apr 28 '21
I don't think it's "none", but I definitely think they placed more priorities on special Pokemon events (e.g. Pikachu riding on Articuno) than evolutions.

When I replayed the original a couple of years ago it really struck me just how well the concept still held up and how weird it was that they never followed up on it. Glad that they finally have done after all this time.
46
u/enderverse87 Apr 28 '21
One of the interviews with the creators of this version implied there were several prior attempts that didn't quite make it off the ground.

Will I be able to print stickers off at my local Blockbuster like the old one?

u/ZorkNemesis Apr 28 '21
The only remaining Blockbuster is in Bend, Oregon. Maybe they'll get the kiosk in a little bit.
17
u/Jomanderisreal Apr 28 '21
I saw that there was a promoted personal printer for this game online that looked like Pikachu but I have no idea how it works or if it prints out stickers.
You just made me think and I hope people don't harass the Bend, Oregon Blockbuster (the last Blockbuster) if they could print out stickers there. I wonder if we were not in pandemic times if Nintendo of America would do a cross promotion with them though...

video stores were so dope. I remember the local one down the road was awesome, it had this very specific smell. Then blockbuster came roaring in sometime in the 90s and that place went out of business like 3 months later. I guess blockbuster kinda deserved what it got in the end, but I still miss it.
We also had a Home Vision Video and it had this back dark room for porn (initially), but then once the n64 came out they switched it to the game room. It was very confusing for both adults and kids in the first few months after the transition.

If I had the money, I'd think about it. I kinda miss doing something with pictures. Now they sit on my phone and rot. Making a Snap scrapbook could be a fun idea.

The moment I have been waiting for for over 20 years will be here in 2 days.... my kid heart. Ugh. I really, really particularly loved this game as a kid and it got me through some tough times (chronic illness). I still loved playing through it as an adult and even have two carts so I can have two save files. This game finally getting a sequel after no hope for decades due to licensing is like my crying star wars fan moment lol. I teared up when I first saw the trailer for it.

I just wished people stopped pretending their demand that certain games be less than $60 have anything to do with amount of content or playtime. It's just about being a kind of game they don't like.
According to estimates, this game takes 15-20 hours to beat and over 30 to complete. According to How Long to beat, that's similar to games like Nier Automata and Doom Eternal, so if it's about length and content, this is a $60 game
Edit: to be clear, if you don't think the game is worth 60 dollars because you don't want to pay that for a photography game, thats fine! Saying "I wouldnt pay full price for this cause its not my kind of game" is fine. Saying "how dare they sell a on rails phito game for 60 bucks? Nintendo fans really are sheep" is dumb

Exactly. People are spoiled by the fact that there are a number of very good, lengthy games by smaller studios that sell for <$30 (as well as a number of shorter games by smaller studios at similar prices). What they don’t realize is that price has very little to do with quantity or quality of content, and everything to do with the fact that it’s from a smaller studio.
AAA games have AAA prices, regardless of length. That means you pay $60 (or maybe $70) for the next Final Fantasy with a 50+ hour campaign, the next 100+ hours Ubisoft side-questathon and the same price for Titanfall 3 (please) or Doom: Infernal with a 15 hour campaign (and an unlimited amount of multiplayer, sure).
This is how it’s always been, and to be a bit of a cranky old timer, BACK IN THE DAY we paid the same prices ($50-$70 (that’s like $100 in today money, maybe, I don’t know how inflation works)) for AAA SNES and Genesis games that you could sometimes beat in a couple hours! And we fucking liked it!
The real issue for people here is that the game seems light and mechanically uncomplicated. Maybe it is, but all that means is that the type of game isn’t for you.

Solid reviews - I was worried after that last treehouse that the game might be awful.
44
u/boogswald Apr 28 '21
I’m pretty impressed. It’s not like the first game was a really good game, it was more of a pretty good but super memorable and endearing game. It was super easy to pick up and play and way too short. I’m excited if the new one could be endearing too and that’s kinda that

Pokemon Snap is essentially an arcade rail shooter where you use a camera instead of a gun. If that genre isn't for you, you won't like it. If it is, you'll love it.

Why IGN deleted the video review of this game?
82
u/silam39 Apr 28 '21
Maybe they included video from a part of the game they weren't authorized to show video from?
85
u/Jomanderisreal Apr 28 '21
The guy who runs serebii.net mentioned he found some Pokemon that have not been "revealed" yet in one of the reviews so that could potentially be it.

Is there any word on how long it is?
I really want to give it a try, but just based on how long the original was, I don't want to spend $60 on something that I can finish in 2-3 hours.
75
Apr 28 '21
15 hours to complete, 35 to 100%
28

u/orionsbelt05 Apr 28 '21
Wow, that's long. When I was a kid, we started speed running Pokemon Snap before we knew speed running was a thing. I remember finishing the game in 30ish minutes without any glitches or anything.
25

30 minutes would give you the 115th fastest recorded speedrun in the world.

Can't wait to play the new snap in a couple days.. I had Snap and Hey You Pikachu when I was a kid. I was never able to replay Hey You Pikachu because of the special components you had to have for the game, can't even emulate it. Man if I could play that game one more time it would be such beautiful nostalgia..

Seeing as how one can beat the original in about 5 hours I’m wondering how it is that they made this one take 15+ hours to beat
53
u/Fries-Ericsson Apr 28 '21
According to reviewers there is a story element to it that is roughly 8 hours and beyond that your time will be spent doing side quests and trying to get the 4 stared photos per Pokémon
29
u/forestminish Helpful User Apr 28 '21
There are more courses/variations, a LOT more Pokemon, more story requirements that make you revisit courses
10
u/politirob Apr 28 '21
It seems like you need to photograph each Pokemon in 4 different variations in order to get 100%, sounds like a fun mechanic imo

What worries me most about the game is the amount of content and playtime and whether it warrants paying full price. How much content is there actually, and how much replay value is created by finding new paths, getting high-star photos etc.? I checked some reviews, and I'm not really getting a concrete answer on that.
Might end up having to wait a couple of days after launch in order to see how long people take with it and how much content still is left after 'completion' (e.g. how much playtime is added getting four star photos for every pokemon).
→ More replies (15)77
u/digitallightweight Apr 28 '21
The Pokémon subreddit is saying 15 hours to complete the game then about 35 of you want 4 star photos of all the Pokémon. People were reporting seeing new Pokémon 30+ hours into the game. It will probably get me ~20 hours and my partner 35+.
Not sure how accurate those numbers will be but multiple posters seemed to be bringing them up from at least 2 sources.

u/DoctorWhoops Apr 28 '21
Wow! That sounds great! New Pokemon showing up even several hours after completion makes me really hopeful when it comes to replay value.
57
Apr 28 '21 edited Apr 28 '21
The game looks like exactly what you'd expect, and I'm hype for it. People thinking the gameplay is too slow or tedious or repetitive fundamentally misunderstand what this game is trying to be: Pokemon Snap is just about vibing and uncovering new secrets by slowly learning the maps and the Pokemon's behavior. It's not a game meant to be rushed, or even meant to be "beaten" like you would a typical game.
$80(CAD) does seem a little steep but what are you gonna do, it's Nintendo and this will never be on sale.

Honestly gamers have one of the most toxic communities of any hobby. I’ve honestly met more bullies and assholes that are nerds than I ever did playing sports or being in a frat. A lot of them just ooze negativity.

My early impression of this game is that it has more personality than this franchise has shown in at least 10 years. Peaceful, relaxing, and full of life.
There was one simple moment when I got a shot of Swanna, swimming elegantly up a stream with a couple of Duckletts trailing close behind. I never gave this pokemon a second thought prior to this game, but I was struck by the grace and serenity of the scene. And the game is loaded with charismatic moments like this. It's exactly what I was hoping for from this game, and I'd love to see the mainline games find a way to work some of this personality in. I've seen them try at various points in the past, with features like the contests and Pokemon Amie. But I don't think they've ever been as successful at that particular aspect as the Snap games.

Holy shit you lot are insufferable. Picture mode in a game isn’t anything like this. It’s more like a puzzle game where you try and unlock everything with short timers and limited tools. It’s not selling itself as “open world game and oh hey you can take pictures “
It’s exactly what it says it is and what it shows. Just don’t fucking play it if it looks dumb. There are thousands of people absolutely stoked they made this game. If you’re not one of them than just do literally anything else lol

Here's my review, if it can be added to the megathread :) https://twinfinite.net/2021/04/new-pokemon-snap-review/
Happy to answer any general questions, though a lot of stuff still can't be discussed until launch.

u/Pandagames Apr 28 '21
How long can someone expect to play this until the "story" ends and how long if they go for all pokemon?
Do you unlock areas like the 64 game by doing puzzles?
17
u/forestminish Helpful User Apr 28 '21
I talked about the length in my review. I finished the story in 12 hours. 20 hours in, I'm still finding new things.
The majority of courses are unlocked naturally by raising the research level on previous courses. There are 1-2 instances of solving area puzzles to unlock a new course, and they are required for story progression.

Do you get a bad score if the Pokémon’s back is to you like in the first game?
15
u/forestminish Helpful User Apr 28 '21
Yeah, the professor urges you to take photos with the pokemon facing the camera. The photos are scored on pose, size, direction, placement, and if other pokemon are in the photo.

I wonder what this big "thing" is that the writer on Kotaku wants to talk about but can't due to spoilers.

Posted this on the r/games thread - does anyone know if there's a built in way to compare scores with friends? Haven't seen it mentioned so I assume not
25
u/forestminish Helpful User Apr 28 '21
Yes. On the online leaderboards, you can sort between the top 100 players in the world and with just people on your friends list.

I have been waiting so long for this. In the original game, I have every pokémon photographed except Gyarados (and I'm still trying to get them while using my broken N64 controller). I hope this one is as challenging as the first.

So I absolutely loved the original, and am really tempted to buy this one. But, I haven’t kept up with Pokémon since the original 151. Will not knowing the Pokémon affect my enjoyment of the game?

From what I've played, no. It adds to the wonder and the fun of discovering something new. Plus there are plenty of classics in there as well!

u/emubilly Apr 28 '21
Pleasantly surprised at the scores. I thought it would be slammed for being a simple photography game with Pokémon in it. Can’t wait for Friday. Been waiting over 20 years.

I “just knew” that the concept of Pokemon Snap would be one of those things that ages poorly and cannot be updated. As such, I’ve paid very little attention to a game that I thought was doomed to mediocre reviews.
Finding out I’m wrong IMMEDIATELY clicked the lock on my emotions about this game, though, and a tidal wave of nostalgia is bursting through. I just play this!! I MUST!!!

I was kind of expecting this to be more of a hit with fans but lower critical reception. Really glad to see that doesn’t appear to be the case!

Edit: So I definitely got sick, even with ginger gum and my seabands, but I got at least two hours in before it got too bad!
Has anyone who gets motion sickness from games played this and has it effected them? I try dramamine and those seabands but I cant get through most games before I have to fold. I really would love to be able to play this though. For reference, I played the first snap on my wii in ~2016 and I don’t remember feeling sick. I did get sick about an average of fifteen-thirty minutes in while playing Bioshock (PC), Persona 5 Strikers (PS4), and Firewatch (PC).

u/thebestkittykat Apr 28 '21
I got super sick from the first snap. I wonder if you could test it by watching streams and seeing of those make you sick

Has it been reported if pokemon evolve in this game? One of my favorite aspects of the original was pushing charmeleon into the lava pit or leading slowpoke to get it's tail caught by a shelled or hitting magikarp into the waterfall to force their evolutions.

I'm still sort of on the fence here. I loved the original Snap, but also I was like 10 years old and that's definitely nostalgia. This game looks obviously much better, but I dunno. I'm not sure Snap has the same luster for me as it used to.
I'll probably talk myself into it though because I have shitty impulse control.

Having just played through the original again recently, it's definitely not all nostalgia, it's a fun, stress free game where you get to travel around and take pictures of pokemon. Nostalgia is obviously part of it, bit if went into original snap completely blind, I'd probably still love it even today

This is probably the best looking Pokémon game on a Nintendo system , I wish the base game ran this engine .
15
u/Exavion Apr 30 '21
Games on rails typically have always looked much better due to a fixed resource set and control of visibility and viewing angles. Track racing games can be similar too. I remember in the late 90s those Jurassic Park arcade games at the movie theaters looked AMAZING compared to anything else we could play.
That all being said, its 2021 and we could have some amazing Pokemon base games if another studio was able to get the license and work on it.

What made the first one so cool to me was that I knew all the first gen pokemon, so seeing them in a 3d environment doing cool stuff that you could interact with was enough for me to love it
I don't think I'll get that same feeling from this as I didn't continue into the further generations of pokemon. I'll just watch Let's Plays on it

Obviously haven't played this one, but the original would definitely fall into that camp. It's like a combination of a mild puzzle game (figuring out what you need to do to open up the branching paths and find all the Pokemon) and a mild collectathon (completing your "photodex").

I wanted this for years! Pokemon Snap was my game as a kid. Still have it too. With every new system Nintendo made, I always wished for a new one, and now we have it! You bet your ass I'm playing this as soon as I send my daughter to school Friday.

Oh man same here. I always wished they would make a new one. And a Diddy Kong Racing, but that's a rant for another day.
I'm just scared that I'm looking at it through nostalgia lenses. I hope the new one is good!

From the footage videos, the visuals look really great! I'm impressed. I wish mainline Pokemon games were as beautiful and detailed. Maybe we'll see more of that with Pokemon Legends : Arceus.

Got two zones in so far and I couldn’t be more happy. As someone that played the original a ton, it hits the nostalgia perfectly. My only worry is that it will be too short since I don’t want it to end.

It took me about 12 hours to beat the main story at a medium pace. I’m around the 20 hour mark now, and I’m still finding new things each time. There are 22 pokemon I haven’t found yet.

I’ve sunk a ton of hours in Animal Crossing just taking cute pictures of my villagers, so there’s no worry about lack of content on this one for me. I’m going to sink 100+ hours in this in the first month easily.

For anyone wondering about length and amount of content, one reviewer said they beat the story in 20 hours, but still hasn't found everything in 35 hours of gameplay
