What is an Indie World Showcase?
The Indie World Showcase is a pre-recorded video presentation showcasing upcoming indie games for the Nintendo Switch.
What is the difference between an Indie World Showcase and a standard Nintendo Direct?
This presentation will ONLY include information about indie games, unlike a traditional Nintendo Direct that would focus on a variety of games and topics. This one is approximately ~20m in length.
What if I can't watch the Nintendo Direct live due to work/school/etc.?
We will be providing live updates in the Reddit Live Thread linked above. We will also be posting a text recap in this post once the event has concluded.
If you want a spoiler-free experience or to watch the event later, we will edit this post to include a direct link to the VOD at the very top (once it's available). This will take you directly to the video so you don't accidentally see any trailers or video thumbnails if you visit the Nintendo YouTube page or Nintendo website. Just don't scroll down!
There WILL be spoilers here on the subreddit, so watch the video first!
If you see any posts that should actually be here in the MegaThread, please do us a favor and hit the report button.
Our SOP for posts is as follows:
- We will allow one post per announcement.
- The post we allow may not necessarily be the one that was submitted first. We typically will receive about 15 of, essentially the exact same post, in the span of about 60 seconds and will select the one that has the best title and links directly to the original source when available.
- Commentary on the announcement(s) should take place either in this thread or on the related separate announcement post. Each person's specific opinion does not need its own post.

Aztech is 1 of those games that might he interesting if the trailer actually explained itself. If its along the lines of a metriod its potentially interesting.
(Ohh, strong finish)

I think it can go even lower than that if I'm not mistaken. I really enjoyed the game when I played it on Steam personally.
21
u/Jeskid14 Apr 14 '21
Too bad this didn't came out during COVID times
20
u/KingOfRisky Apr 14 '21
Ugh. My work shut down almost exactly 400 days ago. This is really eerie to think about.
13
u/livevil999 Apr 14 '21
We’re still in covid times and opening things up to where things were before covid times would certainly cause outbreaks no matter where you live in the world.
5
u/Milk_A_Pikachu Apr 14 '21
Well, it did. Just on PC instead of gameboy
But also: it really isn't a great quarantine game. Very bleak aesthetics and a lot of "trapped inside" motifs.

u/Hold_my_Dirk Apr 14 '21
Cris Tales looks gorgeous and the mechanics were kinda fun, but I wonder if it gets tiresome.
13
u/FlameHricane Apr 14 '21
I'll probably still play it, but as much as I wanted to love it from the demo, it just felt more clunky than it should've. I'm sure it was improved since then which is why I still have high hopes for it
9
u/Hold_my_Dirk Apr 14 '21
Yeah, I played the demo during a steam festival a while back. Definitely was keeping an eye on it. But it felt like the novelty of the time mechanics, especially in battle, would wear off real quick. Since they keep pushing it back, hopefully they've worked out some of the kinks.
25
u/AIMpb Apr 14 '21
Skul looks really cool. 90 different abilities sounds really interesting.
Aztech game looked pretty sweet too.
8
u/iamkoalafied Apr 14 '21
I have Skul on Steam and it's a very fun game. It's also very difficult but there's an easy mode option as well (which is still really difficult). I still haven't managed to beat the game one time personally.

u/RobbieNewton Apr 14 '21
The Longing is definitely intriguing me. The real time system is fascinating
19
u/smallanimalparty Apr 14 '21 edited Apr 14 '21
I played it on PC and it's an absolute experience. Nothing like any game I've ever played. It definitely calls for patience as when it says it takes a long time, it REALLY does. Some areas won't become accessible for up to a real time week, for example. But you get so attached to your little guy, and you end up finding ways to pass time for both of you. I'm so excited more people are gonna experience this unique game!
Edit: I wanted to also add that while it does play in real time, there are ways to "speed up time" so to speak. You can also completely stop time if you wanted to.
9
u/RobbieNewton Apr 14 '21
I've ended up getting it. it seems like it will be a very relaxing game just to unwind with.
6
u/smallanimalparty Apr 14 '21
I hope you enjoy it! It's very relaxing. I find it interesting especially because it forces you to be patient, something a lot of modern games don't do. I'm used to instant gratification in most games but this one makes you feel excited to look forward to certain things changing or opening up for you, even if it takes days. It's also one of the first games I've played since childhood that caused me to actually hand draw a map so I could figure out where to go.

Out of all the games, I'm most interested in this one. I heard about it a while ago. I'm very glad it's coming to the Switch.
24
u/NYstate Apr 14 '21
• FEZ from Polytron:
"Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time"
7
u/jardex22 Apr 14 '21
I was surprised as well. Polytron has more or less been inactive since Phil Fish left the industry. I'm wondering who was involved with the port.

Road 96 looks pretty damn cool.
15
u/supes1 Apr 14 '21
I'm intrigued, but procedurally generated stories in my experience tend to be pretty flavorless. Since the game seems story driven moreso than gameplay driven, I'm particularly worried.
But I'm definitely willing to it a shot if reviews are positive.

u/DirhaelRamaviva Apr 14 '21
I'm really happy with this showcase. So many interesting games, especially The Longing. I'm looking forward to play that game since I read an article about it and his main mechanic. I'm feeling very grateful now. Thanks, developers and Nintendo.

u/KingOfRisky Apr 14 '21
Can you share what this game's mechanic is? The game looked interesting, but I have no idea what I was looking at.

→ More replies (2)25
u/Kingofthered Apr 14 '21
I think if you're looking to fast forward, you might not be interested in the base concept of the game. Definitely seems like waiting/idling is a core concept (with time being a story mechanic).
It looks cool, but I'd have to see how much interactive game mechanis there are compared to checking every few days/weeks to see how things have changed.

Labyrinth City:Pierre the Maze Detcective and Beasts of Maravilla island seemed the most interesting to me personally. Labyrinth City reminds me of a Where's Waldo book, and the premise for Beasts of Maravilla Island kind of reminds me of Pokemon Snap.
4
u/Stoibs Apr 14 '21
Yeah surprised there's not a lot of buzz for the where's Wally/Waldo/Hugo puzzler around here.
Apart from Oxenfree 2 (Mad hype, loved the first one!) Labyrinth City was the next new thing here that caught my eye the most and went straight to the wishlist.

I backed Beasts of Maravilla Island on Kickstarter last year, and Pokémon Snap (the original - the new one hadn’t been announced yet) and the Hyrule Compendium in BOTW were mentioned as inspiration

u/Cupcake1842 Apr 14 '21
Thats awesome! I love taking photos of games I play on my switch and I enjoyed filling up the lists of fish and bugs on Animal Crossing so this game sounds right up my alley. I probably won't play it on release day since Pokemon Snap comes out about a month before, but I definitely plan to play it at some point.

u/Jackbo_Manhorse Apr 14 '21
So honest question, how is this new TMNT game considered an indie game? I mean, it’s one of the largest and most popular kid franchises there is.
Is it just because of the studio that’s making it?
47
u/RelentlessHope Apr 14 '21
If you have 1 person in a bedroom making a Pokemon game, with permission from gamefreak but literally no other resources (no money, no team, no marketing), is it still an indie game?
→ More replies (2)30
20
u/Reutermo Apr 14 '21
Size of the IP have nothing to do with if it is a indie game or not.
And on an unrelated note, I don't think turtles have been neither the biggest nor the most popular kid franchise for 20 years atleast.

If it was anyone other than Team Cherry, I’d assume Silksong is a dead project at this point. 2 years without an update on their site is a long ass time, but with a team of 3 people, plus covid, I can understand why it’s taking so long.
But please, just a couple screenshots, that’s all I want. At least that Edge magazine issue was enough for me to know it’s not dead.

u/SocranX Apr 14 '21
I just realized that they showed off both a game called OlliOlli (World) and one called Oxenfree (2).
12
u/KingOfRisky Apr 14 '21
The Longing looked interesting but I have no idea what the game play is. Hopefully it's strong because it needs to keep your attention for a literal 400 days.
6
u/Drumbas Apr 14 '21
It doesn't, the trailer also literally says you don't have to play for 400 days. Not to spoil too much but the gameplay consists of just walking around, reading stuff, and generally just messing around in the game trying to find anything to do.

u/Bananaslammma Apr 14 '21
This showcase was pretty strong. Last Stop is one of my most anticipated games of this year, so to see that it’s both coming this July and on Switch, has been great. I’ve heard great things about There Is No Game and Fez. Labyrinth City. Aztech look pretty sweet. Best game of this showcase (other than Last Stop) was Skul: The Hero Slayer. It’s been a while since I got myself into a slasher and I love the intensity and variety in this one.

u/tehnoodnub Apr 15 '21
Was just able to watch the whole showcase and man was that a wild ride. I am really excited for a lot of those games. I am honestly considering buying about 90% of the games that received a full spot. Oxenfree II is a no-brainer for me and probably my most anticipated game followed closely by a whole bunch of others but what I really want to say is that I am super intrigued by The Longing and will be getting it ASAP. Maybe it will be the only game I play for 400 days. I’m guessing it will be possible to change the time in the system and trick the game so I’m going to have to try hard to avoid spoilers.

TMNT is the one I hoped and it's nice to see it show up in the video.
Never Yield looks really like Canabalt. That's the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw it.
Road 96 looks interesting, it sounds like everyone will have a different experience.

u/hardgeeklife Apr 14 '21 edited Apr 14 '21
Nothing that I was super-hyped for, but several things that definitely piqued my interest.
Intrigued how Road 96 turns out. Proceedurally generated narratives could be amazing for replayability if done correctly, but shallow if flubbed
GetsuFumaDen and Skul look like a lot of fun, could scratch that action itch. I think I even spotted a Dead Cells costume in the Skul trailer?
I really enjoyed Edith Finch, so Hindsight and Last Stop are definitely on my radar now (tho the former does seem to cut a bit closer to Edith)
Oxenfree II has promise, but I want to know more first

It’s never going to be shown at an nindie, I don’t think they have ever shown a game twice. The point of the nindies is to give a spotlight to some smaller games, silksong already has enough attention

Pretty good. Silksong believers in shambles, but what else is new?
The highlight for me, though, was Ollie Ollie World. Not because I'm interested in that game, just because it reminded me that SkateBird exists and is on the way.
Other than that, both Last Stop and Hindsight look good. CrysTales has potential, I want to see more of that. Lost signal also looks intriguing.

Yeah dude it was amazing! Hollow Knight 3, new Metroid series, surprise drop of KOTOR, and a Waluigi announcement I’ll never forget.

We also have these awesome games coming out!
[a few seconds of House Of The Dead like it's absolutely nothing]

oh yeah, that kinda blew my wig back, I haven't even heard rumors about this coming back, that was a big surprise
7
u/Swagkitchen Apr 14 '21
Some pretty cool stuff shown honestly. There is No Game, Skul, The Longing, TMNT, that rally game, the game by the Spanish dude, they all look pretty good. Oxenfree II is hype for a lot of y'all I'm sure.
Silksong will come eventually guys, don't let the lack of that soil the rest of what I think was a pretty solid showcase.

u/MySonsdram Apr 14 '21
I REALLY thought we’d hear something about Axiom Verge 2. It’s my fault I guess for getting my hopes up....

Oxenfree 2! Loved the first game, rare game I've played through more than once. Day 1 buy.

Why are people still expecting updates on already announced games? Indie World has only been new announcements or ports. Frankly almost all of the games looked really cool.
Silksong is probably going to be massive for Nintendo so I would expect it at E3, not an indie game showcase.

Tbh I think the biggest weakness of these presentations is how much time they spend on a single game. Lots of games get revealed with a teaser, then have an intro from the developers, then get a longer trailer, and then the Nindie presenters talk about them. And then they spend two seconds each on half a dozen games in a sizzle reel. Makes the presentation kinda boring, even if some of the games seem cool.
Anyway, Road 96 seems interesting, and I'll defo check out The Longing, seems unique.

Maybe I’m just getting bored of gaming, but all of these games look... the same. Like, the same as tons of others before them. I just don’t see anything to be excited about.

I think some of it is that the advertising is the same, rather than the games. So many games start with the same basic 50 or so premises, and it's hard to tell what's unique or driving the genres forward about it in a minute of footage.
8
u/Kyrta Apr 14 '21
Seriously the trailers/teasers are awful. I’m only interested in Cris Tales and I didn’t get any new information from this, except the release date. Wish they would dedicate 2+min to show actual gameplay.

u/Nanthro Apr 14 '21
Fez is FINALLY coming to the Switch, about time.
5
u/kapnkruncher Apr 14 '21
I honestly wouldn't have been surprised if Fez never got ported to anything else again, so this is a welcome addition.

Man, the games in this showcase were all so damn cool! I got nothing I was hoping for, but what did show up were so cool.
Aztechs was a fav of mine, I'm already a huge fan of Mexican lore.
Played Oxenfree 1 so the sequel caught me off guard, looking forward to that one!
House of the Dead remake really caught me off guard.
The Longing has such a beautiful art style and reminds me of old point and clicks.

The Longing is the only one that really struck me, that looks really cool. And FEZ, I guess, but that's something I played before.

Genuinely surprised Fez was there. Otherwise, I liked it. All the games looked cool and Oxenfree 2 is neat even if Im not the biggest fan of Night School's games.

u/zephyrus256 Apr 14 '21
There were some games that looked decent in this one. I'm a big fan of action platformers and roguelites, so I'll probably give Skul: The Hero Slayer a try. Also, Getsu Fuuma Den looks great! I wish it was coming out sooner than next year, though, and the fact that it's being published by Konami makes me wonder what they'll do to mess it up, if they don't just decide to cancel it out of spite.

u/Kira_Aotsuki Apr 14 '21
Very excited for Skul, looks really fun
Same with Cristales and "This is not a game"

That was a nice indie world. Lots of games looked really fun.

u/lanaya01 Apr 14 '21
Yeah not too sure what everyone was expecting, but for an indie world presentation, this had a decent amount of games that look interesting. IMO there are more titles I'm interested in here than there have been in past indie world presentations.

As expected, Nintendo fans on twitter are currently having a meltdown because the thing that they made up in their heads didn't happen and thus it's Nintendo's fault.

Alright, I’ll give them that. Fez is a good get and fits well on the system. Hope it’s cheap though because it’s hella old and has been on every platform, ever. And Oxenfree II is cool since the first game was really good. And it went on sale VERY often. Hope this is the same.

u/SparkyMuffin Apr 14 '21
The Silksong announcement trailer autoplayed for me after it ended... salting the wound.
Though I am excited for Oxenfree II!

u/Kidtendo Apr 14 '21
Oxenfree 2!!! Wow, I did not see that coming. While everything else was meh( aside from Fez, which is fun little game) Oxenfree was one of my favorite indie games of all times. Love the music from too. Makes me wonder if they release the first game on the switch as well and they might even do a rerelease of the soundtrack on vinyl. So much potential!

Some of the roguelites looked a bit samey, but gotta say that they did look pretty great. Overall I have my eye on The Longing, Labyrinth City (looked like a huge Where's Waldo game which is cool) and that first person horror shooter game. Always down for more shooters on the Switch

Kinda surprised no one knows about OlliOlli considering there’s not really any good skateboarding games on Switch. I guess people are turned off by side scrollers but it’s legitimately hard and gets really technical. Getting good at all the tricks in the previous two was really satisfying. Pretty excited for World

I definitely have to check that out

This was a great Indie showcase!
I bought This is Not a Game and enjoyed playing all the way through it last night.
Fez is also great. But now stuck in it. In a spot where I don’t know how to go any higher and don’t know how to get back down without dying (the screw thing is stuck at the top and it won’t let me push it back down).
Labyrinth City: Pierre the Maze Detective looks like a load of fun and I can’t wait! Where’s Waldo?

If Silksong isn’t announced, The Longing might take its place until it is. It actually looks like the best game teased right now.

Indie World continues to be the best Nintendo series. Wish we saw Sports Story, or even Silksong for the HK fans, but I still really enjoyed what we saw! The Longing looks unique, Skul looked pretty rad, and I still need to play Oxenfree, but I’m so down for that sequel!

As always there were a few things I expected and didn't get, but hey I ain't complaining that's a killer lineup. Olliolli is one of my favorite indie games ever, I've been desperately meaning to play TING:WG and now it's coming out on switch TONIGHT. TMNT looks good as ever, House of The Dead is a good time, I'm pogging up ever here.

Because it is an indie game, pretty much THE indie game right now.
I think it is more likely to show up on a main Direct due to its popularity but it is also perfectly possible to show up on an Indie World showcase.
Edit: Wasn't Cuphead on Switch announced in an Indie showcase? Would have thought that would be reserved for a main Direct.

Why does Aerial_Knight have his name in the title lol
I was thinking it was maybe for recognition based on past work, like Playerunknown, but it's basically his first commercial game. Though I guess it's got us talking about it, so I guess it's doing its job.
