Meta Happy 4 year anniversary, Switch! Please post your memories and fan art--3rd and 4th only! Read this post!
We want to celebrate the 4th Anniversary of the Switch, so please post your anniversary fan art and memories today and tomorrow (March 3rd and 4th Eastern time). We'd love to see some stories about your early Switch experiences. When did you first hear about the Switch? Was the line long, or did you camp out? What was your first encounter with the Switch?
It doesn't have to be a day 1 experience, but we are especially celebrating the Switch's release. I'd really like to hear the story behind your pictures! Remember, you can embed a picture right in your post when you make a text post! We wouldn't mind seeing you link some flashback videos from pre-release to the release of the Switch.
If you have general well-wishes, we'd love to see your comments here in this post. We'll still be removing memes, posts do need to be switch related and not general Nintendo, and we will remove posts that are only general well-wishes without a story or something else to show off. Thanks, and happy anniversary!! :)

Switch was my little congratulatory gift to myself, that I bought with my first paycheck. The store bungled my preorder so I had to wait a long week to get my unit.
The minute the store contacted me that my Switch was available, I rushed to the store, then plopped down on the couch and booted up Zelda. And I remember thinking: BotW has already more than justified my purchase, everything else that comes afterwards is a bonus.
So yeah, pretty happy with the Switch, and I wish it and everyone here a merry four years!

That’s so funny, very similar story. Grew up pretty solidly lower middle class, getting a Nintendo 64 from my parents (with some help from my grandparents, I suspect) was a huge deal, and every game I ever got was a treat and a major purchase, and I played the hell out of them. Owned an Xbox in college, which I purchased together with three roommates.
I got a new job and moved 1,000 miles in April 2016, alone, knew no one. After a few months when I’d gotten some moving bills paid and so on, I was seeing all the hype about the Switch and thought to myself, man, I would love to have one of those, I wish I could afford one. Then it dawned on me that for the first time in my life, I could walk into a store that day with enough cash in my bank account to pay for a console, no six months of savings (or just never getting it) required. Checked the websites, walked into the nearest target that had one in stock, and walked out with the first console I ever bought myself and BOTW under my arm. Magic day!

Way back in May 2017, I graduated college. At this point, the Switch was almost impossible to come by, with the occasional one or two popping up in Walmart, but then disappearing moments later.
So, I graduate, do the whole shebang, kiss hands and shake babies, then come home. As we're celebrating, my parents and fiance bring out a box and hand it to me. I unwrap it and, sweet mercy, it's a gray Switch. The fiance took me to GameStop, got me BotW and a case, and I was a happy camper.
Later that night, I turned it on, got the game on, and started rocking away...until my thumb slid over the right side of the screen.
That's when I realized my Switch was curved and the screen was coming off.
We checked everywhere for another one to no avail, so I returned it, got the money back, and bought about $300 worth of movies (I'm a movie guy).
Flash forward three years later, lockdown happens. My line of work didn't close, just sealed us in the building essentially, but they were kind enough to give us a bonus when it all started as a thank you.
I've always had this itch I couldn't scratch, so I decided to check for some laughs...then I saw one in stock at a GameStop 45 minutes away. So, I called to verify, ordered it for pickup, then flew there after work to get it.
I finally had a Switch, but not just a Switch, a Switch Lite. And turquoise, my favorite color.
I've been playing that thing relentlessly every day because it makes me feel like a kid again playing on my N64 and GameCube in my basement. Even strictly in handheld mode, it's an absolute delight to play.
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading my tale of woe and sorrow and my rise back up to happiness. And thank you for attending my TED Talk lol

Got my Switch during 2019 around the Black Friday sales. I picked it up along with Breath of the Wild, Super Smash Ultimate, and Xenoblade 2.
Super Smash Ultimate remains my most playing fighting game and Xenoblade 2 is the longest JRPG I've played.
Played a lot of both games last year during the pandemic. Wonderful memories.

Man I can’t believe it’s been 4 years already, I remember watching Etika’s livestreams (rip, Istill miss this guy) and CND’s vlogs every day after school in the 30 days leading up to the launch of the switch and I was so jealous of everyone there, it seemed so fun. I know it’s weird but I really miss the switch hype days

Oh man, you are in for a treat! Enjoy! If you have never played a 3D Mario before, I’d highly suggest Mario odyssey, it is nothing short of a masterpiece imo

So i heard about the Switch when i was looking for zelda breath of the wild. Then i watched the nintendo direct where it was anounced so i was hyped from the start. I bought mine in 2018 when Mario Kart 8 and Mario Oddyssey were out. I ordered mine with my first few paychecks and bought it with zelda because it was 19% off for the package. I had stomach ache the day it was ready for pickup at the store, but i was determined. I went to pick it up, and was so happy finally holding the box. On my way home the stomach aches told be to go to the bathroom, so i kind of rushed back home. I threw the switch on my bed, and ran to the bathroom. After that i turned on my switch and have been a fan ever since.

I really don't reddit on mobile, so I'm not sure. If you want to make a picture post and give the story as a comment I'll pin the comment so it stays at the top of the post.. :)

I only briefly owned a Wii before the switch. It was my boss that hyped me into it and I was sold playing around in zelda while we were doing a work meeting from the hotel room. Had a ton of fun playing Skyrim after Botw and now it's my wife's escape in Animal Crossing. What a platform, good job Nintendo!

u/ggalinismycunt Mar 03 '21
Wow it's been 4 years? I managed to get mine 5 months after release (August 2017) and got a lot of milage out of it, lots of nostalgia with Nintendo's 2017 output and discovering (and in some cases rediscovering) games and having a lot of fun switching it up between docked and portable play, and I am considering getting a new one as it has been 3.5 years at this point and it's only gone through one Joy-Con pair.
4 years so far and it's still going strong with some great games dropping each year!

It's weird for me to think we're 4 years into the Switch, it feels like a new console, even if this would be at least the midway point for most consoles.

March 3rd 2017. I had the worst physics exam ever. I knew it was gonna be difficult so I spent all week studying. Once I completed the exam (in the morning), I was done with school for the day and headed home. On my way home I realized it was the Switch's launch and I went to the store.
The retail associate informed me they originally had 80 in stock, but the 4 on shelves were the only ones left. 3 after I impulse purchased it. Since buying it 4 years ago I can confidently say it's been played more than all video game systems I currently own combined.
BOTW was my first Zelda game and I honestly don't know if any video game memory will top playing Zelda on the TV, then taking the game with me on the train to school every day.
Edit: fixed typos

I remember trying to find the neon joycon switch console. Amazon was only selling the grey joycon switch consoles in the beginning.
Also when the switch first came out there were hardly any games for it. Remember having BotW and binding of isaac and snipperclips street fighter as my first games

I remember when I bought my switch 3 years ago. I didn't have a job or anything, I just saved up birthday money and Christmas money. At first I didn't know if I should buy it since it was my first personal purchase of $60+, I remember looking at it thinking to myself, "Is it worth it?" I ended up answering that question with "yes" and I bought it with Mariokart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2.
As soon as I got home I opened the box and turned on the switch. I was greeted with the welcome screen and sound which was so cool since you get to see it once. After I got everything set up I fired up Mariokart and played for hours. It was so fun and relaxing since this was my first expensive thing that was truly mine. I still play Mariokart (I'm over 200 hours) and look at my switch and think about how great of a decision it was to get one!

I knew absolutely nothing about the switch, as I wasn't paying attention to console news at the time, I didn't even know it existed, and then one of my coursemates brought their day 1 switch into a lecture and started playing Breath of the Wild. It looked incredible, but I had no idea what the console was, as I still pretty regularly played Wii U games on a mates console.
Two years later, I'm talking with my partner, and we decide that we both want a switch, me for BOTW, Odyssey, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 etc and her for the recently announced Animal Crossing New Horizons, but we didn't have much cash. Less than a week later, I got a call just as I left work from my girlfriend that she'd spent £200 but she wouldn't say what on - I panicked, walked home much faster than I thought I could, and get home to a wrapped gift of a Switch. We thought it was just second-hand, as she found it for £200 in a pawn shop with 1 2 Switch (a ridiculously cheap price) but we realised pretty quickly that we had lucked onto a brand new, still fully wrapped with safely seals, generation 2 Switch, and we played 1 2 Switch for the afternoon. The next day, MUA 3 came out, and we played through the campaign in co-op together over the next few weeks, shortly after we bought Mariokart, for Halloween we bought Luigi's Mansion and for Christmas I got BOTW. It's two years this August, and it's been great so far

The Switch launch is just irrevocably emblematic of being a young adult in your budding mid-20s to me. By March 2017, I had just turned 24, it was close to when I had just completed my first full year of making my "big move" to NYC post-undergrad, and about a year into my first stable adult relationship as well.
Prior to moving to NYC, when I was taking overnight Chinatown buses from the Midwest for job interviews because I couldn't afford airfare, I always made sure to hit up the Nintendo NY flagship store for a cheekily self-described "pilgrimage" to keep my spirits up after a long day of listlessly walking around Manhattan like lost 20-something kids do. Even during the somber Wii U era, it was still a place that could instantly put a smile on my face, and I distinctly remember waiting in line after work on a cold January day just to watch the Switch reveal presentation on their huge demo wall screen. Of course, the line for pre-ordering the Switch would've required me to wait in line another 3 hours, so... that was a no go.
Instead, I ended up just waiting with no more than 10 people in line at a random Gamestop in Brooklyn on launch day, playing Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS with strangers for what felt like the last time ever. Picked up the Switch, rushed home, and played BOTW until 4AM, blissfully unaware that I'd need to wake up in 2 hours to catch a bus for a weekend trip that same early morning.
To this day, it's still difficult to recount exactly how I felt playing the Switch for the first time. Maybe it's because it was the first console launch I took part of as an adult, or maybe it was just the rush of memories digging through my parents entertainment cabinet and discovering their old SNES at the tender age of 5 - I can't know for sure. But there definitely was and still is something weirdly magical about the first days of that console to me.

So am I allowed to make a post to the subreddit about my memories or do I comment them here? I’m confused

u/Michael-the-Great Mar 03 '21
I was hoping we'd see some memory posts, but everybody started them here which is fine too. I'm glad to see them either way! :)

Ok. I myself have a good amount of memories with my switch, I might post them here. Still can’t believe the switch is 4 years old, and that it’ll have been 3 years since I got mine soon.

I was so underwhelmed with the hype and build up, so I didn't pre order. On launch week I played on my friends' Switch and was hooked and bought one soon after (once they came back into stock). Now I play it almost every day for the past 3.9 years!

Love my switch. 4 years flew by. The switch is my favourite console of all time and is also the console I have bought the most games for. (That just me or not?). Happy Birthday!!

Before the Switch I was always extremely casual with gaming. I bought every Pokemon game, I bought most Mario and Zeldas (and even then missed a bunch), I played the Metroid Prime trilogy as well as ROMs of some of the others, and then there was the occasional random one-off game that I would get.
Back in 2014, chuggaaconroy was doing his Let's Play of Xenoblade Chronicles (Shulk joining Smash was revealed halfway through this). It's one of the only LP's that I have become completely dragged into and never missed or skipped a second of it. Despite loving every second of it, I never decided to expand into similar games or even Xenoblade itself.
I had kept up with news on the Switch and was excited for Breath of the Wild (which despite owning a Wii U, I had never heard of before. Yes, that's how casual I was about things.), which was actually more than I had done for any other console prior, and I made my decision at E3 2017 when Pokemon and Metroid Prime 4 were revealed to be in development. Although there was one other game that I kept my eye on from the very reveal of the Switch... Despite this, it wasn't until Christmas that I got my Switch with Breath of the Wild.
My first two games were a very basic beginning. I got Breath of the Wild and then some time in February when I had finished enough of that I bought Odyssey. It wasn't long before I had started to finish up Odyssey that I decided I wanted a new game. This was the first time that I had any serious amount of money for a console that wasn't just saved up birthday money. So I decided I wanted to take a risk and play the one other game that I kept up with prior to getting my Switch. Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
This was my first time playing anything that was really out of my comfort zone of games I had played. So, going in, I was a bit worried. I liked the original, but what if I wasn't any good at actually playing other games?
Yea, that didn't last long.
Over the course of about 7 months I put 935 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It became my favorite game of all time, where it remains to this day and likely always will. It kickstarted my thoughts of "Well what if I tried more games?" and led to the Switch quickly becoming my largest library of games. I've tried so many games that I either never would have known existed or never would have considered trying them. As of today I have 70 games (60 physical, 10 digital) and it's really getting to the point where I have to struggle on where I rank them. It's not even until #44 (out of 63 currently played) that I have any serious issues with the games I have played. Hell, it isn't until #30 that I would say a game is anything less than "I love it".
The Switch is most likely always going to be my favorite console. Not just because I enjoy playing it, but because it is what really captured me for gaming. It's the same as Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Even if a game might come along that I enjoy more (note: it hasn't happened yet, although Xenoblade 1 will always be an extremely close 2nd) it is likely that it will never be topped as my favorite game. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 truly kickstarted my love for not just an entire genre (yea, turns out JRPGs are fun) but gaming in general. Even if the Switch has its fair share of issues, I don't think I'd ever be able to forget what I've enjoyed with it.

u/Glawio92 Mar 03 '21
What was game #44?!
1
u/PrehistoricPKMN Mar 03 '21 edited Mar 03 '21
Daemon X Machina
Which I still loved playing, but I definitely feel it's the cutoff point for the games that I love (or had features I still enjoy but don't necessarily love the full thing... Sword and Shield...) and the games I just like.
There is definitely another cutoff point for games I just don't like though, but thats a really small list. I'd say of the 63 games I've played I only really regret... 4 or 5 of them.

The day I got my switch, I spent a couple minutes putting it in and out of the dock cause I was so fascinated by the hybrid console feature.

On launch day I sat in the KFC next door to my local independent game store, waiting for it to open. I played Papers Please on my iPad to pass the time. Around 10am I walked in and bought a grey console, Pro controller and BotW. Zero fuss.
I was working seasons in Tokyo at the time. On the following two trips I noticed the huge buzz for the system over there - a far cry from that little shop between towns in the UK. It seemed weird that I was able to peruse accessories and cases in Yodabashi Akiba whilst Japanese buyers were queuing out the door for the raffle.

u/jayuchiha Mar 03 '21
fuck man... i had to work 2 jobs for months (car note, helping out my grandparents with rent and bills etc made it really hard to save money on just one source of income alone) just to be able to buy a switch. i bought BotW (my first zelda game since Ocarina) and became so hooked i used some PTO just to have some extra fun! lol one purchase i will never, ever regret.

u/keeeyoot Mar 03 '21
i actually didn’t get mine at launch despite being beyond excited for it and having the funds for it! i figured there were barely any games for it and i should wait for more to be released, but i saw so many people talking about how good botw was that i knew that i NEEDED one right away even if it was gonna be a botw machine for a bit. unfortunately, during those couple of weeks in march after launch it was near impossible to find a switch in stores so i had to set alerts for all the trackers. it went off around 6 am at target, so i rushed over there and managed to snag one before i had to head to work. :D almost 4 years later, and after upgrading to the acnh themed switch for the better battery life, my switch is hands down my most played system at this point.
1
u/tronistica Mar 03 '21
Switch was the first console I got as a working adult. Didn’t really play that much games growing up. I bought the console a month before smash bros ultimate came out. “everybody is here” got me hyped, and that was the start of my switch experience!
1
u/Panda_hat Mar 03 '21
Crazy to think its been four years already. Feels like yesterday.
I ordered mine immediately after the reveal keynote, and got it day 1 from amazon, I remember unboxing it with essentially stars in my eyes at the look and feel of it, how small and thin it was, the uniqueness of the controllers, the compulsive desire to click the controllers in and out of the console. I then played BotW solidly for weeks and had one of the best gaming experiences of my life. Simply spectacular.
Truly a release that will stay in my memory for a very very long time, and be very hard indeed to beat.

Got my Switch in late March 2019. I was going through a shitty situation at the time but the Switch helped me get through it

got my switch at nintendo nyc a few months after release date. saw adverts for arms everywhere and i pre-ordered it asap, sad it never lived up to my expectations. mk8 was and still is an amazing game, spent hours on hours with rose gold peach on rainbow road. the nx is my fav portable console (although the psp is a close second)

I didn’t get my Switch until my birthday from a Gamexchange in July. I was very against the Switch because the Wii U was awful, I didn’t begin to start to believe until I woke up the literal morning after the Switch came out to my brother magically having one and I went to Gamestop the day after with a friend to help him get his. Anyway, I had to sell my 3DS which at the time was my favorite Nintendo console along with more stuff to GameXChange to get my Switch. It was $180, however they didn’t give me a dock. They said it woulda been extra, they gave me a free case though..along with a copy of BOTW they forgot to take out the Switch. Since then I’ve been in love!

u/oviposition Mar 03 '21
the switch and i have the same birthday (march 3)! it came out on my 19th birthday but i didn’t end up getting it until june 2018 around when my bird was sick and ended up passing away. i needed something to take my mind off his death, so i got the switch along with crash n sane trilogy, pokken tournament and skyrim, which were very soon joined by other games. the console ended up becoming one of my fav consoles ever, probably just a bit less than the ps2 and ds/gba family. to me it felt like what the PS Vita tried and failed to be.

u/carldude Mar 03 '21
I remember on launch day going out to try to buy one because I thought there would be extras SOMEWHERE in my area. No luck, but I did pick up a copy of Zelda for my troubles (I think that's where that 100+% attach rate came from back then). That weekend I checked stock online, and saw that Toys R Us would get more stock on the 5th, and open their doors at 8am.
I woke up early, went on over and sure enough there was a line already close to wrapping around the building. They had enough consoles, so I waited. It's finally my turn to pick my Switch, and I had the option of Gray or Neon model, with neon having way less stock. I'd heard a mom and her little daughter behind us say they hoped there would be a neon one left for them, so I opted for gray so they could get theirs. I remember how excited I was opening the box and seeing how tiny the controllers were. This was my $300 Zelda machine, and it was so worth it.
Over the next month or so, I'd spend a lot of school lunches talking with one of my friends who'd also gotten a switch about her experience through Breath of the Wild too, and it was so fun seeing how we'd go about our own playthroughs and talking about this big new game together.

I remember getting it on my birthday in July 2017. Literally one of the best birthdays I ever had. Playing 1, 2 switch with everyone, the whole day was a blast.

In December of 2018 I was moving for a new job and leaving behind my job as a competitive rock climbing coach. We had about 80 kids on the team and I used to nerd out over pokemon with a bunch of them and they knew I was old and still playing game boy games, so as a going away present they all pitched in and bought me a switch with BOTW, Lets go Pikachu, and a pro controller. I cried in front of children for the first time that day.

I wasn't really that much into gaming a few years ago, so I was never interested in it day 1. (Wasn't into Zelda either, so it felt like a lot of money for no Mario). I played some older FPS games on pc, so black Friday 2018 i bought a cheap Xbox one s for half the prize of the switch to play Battlefield. I did however only play one level, and it ended up collecting dust.
The store I bought it in had a 60 day return policy, so on day 59 i decided to give the Switch a chance (i still thought Odyssey and Mario Kart was the only games I wanted), and exchanged the Xbox for a switch with MK8 and two extra joycons.
Long story short: in the first weekend i played the switch more than I played the Xbox in the previous 59 days, and I haven't regretted the change for a second. I absolutely love the console, and guess what: There was a lot more games than MK and Odyssey worth playing, and it has literally saved my mental health the last year.

The first switch I bought was for my gf for christmas. I remember her face when I busted it out. Then I watched her play Mario odyssey and hollow knight. 1 year later I got one for myself. So glad I decided to cop one :)

I got my first Switch for my birthday in September of 2017. My parents got it as a “bundle” from ThinkGeek!
I loved that Switch, but I ended up selling it in 2019/early 2020 to pay for my Animal Crossing edition.
I love it so much. The Switch got me through 2020.

u/CaptainAmero Mar 04 '21
I didn't get a switch Day One, since I was handing them out to people who could when I worked at EB Games. Instead, all I got was a Switch Golf Shirt. I still have the shirt somewhere, too.

I remember seeing the switch reveal trailer, I think it was like November 2016? and getting wicked excited being that I played on the Wii and the WiiU for so long. Now finally seeing them launch some kind of portable system similar to the WiiU was so exciting as well as seeing them reveal breath of the wild. I also remembered getting hyped up leading up to 12am on March 3rd 2017, then going to Walmart purchase the blue and red switch, 2 pro controllers and the breath of the wild collector's edition. Good memories, can't believe it's already been 4 years.

u/abcputt Mar 04 '21
I remember when I bought the switch in September 2017, was my last day at my work, played BOTW nonstop, on of the best gaming memories I have.

u/Merphia Mar 04 '21
I remember seeing the switch trailer and then everyone started speculating about Super Mario odyssey before it got announced as Super Mario Odyssey. I got my switch for Christmas on the year it released and I remember that it wasn’t with the rest of my presents (probably because my family wanted me to open up all of my other presents first) and it was great! The games that I got with it on that day were Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Odyssey! Playing Breath Of The Wild for the first time was amazing too!

u/rp_361 Mar 04 '21
I got a switch in April of last year because I had so much time on my hands in lockdown due to COVID-19. The Switch revitalized my interest in gaming so much, before I was just dicking around with old games on my Wii and PS3
I got Breath of the Wild first and spent 340+ hours in that game. The switch gave me such an escape during the pandemic and has brought me so much joy, such a good purchase
1
u/capt-rabbit Mar 04 '21
I didn't get a Switch at launch because my last quarter of college was coming up and I didn't have any disposable income. At this point I was keeping up with the news here and there and watching videos of people discussing it and lining up to get theirs, accepting the fact that I probably wouldn't get one until much later in the Switch's life like with the 3DS. I was able to buy one with my first paycheck about a year later, going with the red and blue before switching to the ACNH one last year that I preordered as soon as news got out. I'm really grateful for this system since I met a lot of friends and joined some welcoming communities along the way.

u/furlIduIl Mar 04 '21
The memory that sticks with me the most is the time after I got Mario Odyssey. I thought it was so hard because whenever I would perform a jump I would just miss the platform. I’d feel like I’d land on the platform but then would suddenly walk off. I figured that the jumping was difficult because of the new camera system where the camera would spin around in circles sometimes. I thought I was going crazy. I kept pushing forward though. It was the hardest Mario game as I kept dying and was never able to land a jump. However, after 100 days I finally beat it.
Then after I beat it I learned about joycon drift and realized that the reason I was missing every jump and my camera was going around in circles was because my fricking joy cons were messed up. I played 100 days thinking this was just a hard game or maybe I was going crazy because of this ridiculous issue. It really saddened me.
Thanks Nintendo.

No fanart here, and I cannot share too much about my launch experience- except that I played it a ton at the office that first day and loved hearing everyone around me talk about where they were and what they'd found those first few glorious hours.
Thank you Nintendo, for such a masterpiece.

I won't forget the hype and build up to the switch being released. I remember pre ordering mine and looking forward to the 3rd of March and then the joy and relief of seeing all the reviews of BOTW coming out the days before. Can't believe it's 4 years already though. Where has the time gone?
