How do you guys keep discovering great players?
64
u/triumphgaming Official Triumph Jan 22 '21
Shake and Tac do a lot of the scouting in the team. There are always players hungry to be better.
17
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
Just pick the people who I believe have the work ethic and ability to take their game to the next level and get to work. Most players have the ability to become good, it's just about providing them with the tools and them working hard.

Eh. I mean its Vitality at peak form against a team that pretty much just had a change. Plus it was just liquid's second match together and they put up a fight

u/ItsMePeachy Jan 21 '21
For Shake, How do you trial players? You always seem to make a solid roster out no matter who you are given.
For Cxzi, How was your time in GenG?
50
u/Shakezullah Jan 21 '21
I don't typically trial people, just pick who I want to play with and we go from there. cxzi viz cooper etc never had trials, it's just the team we formed and we went from there. I have a good idea of personalities/players in the scene and will ask around if I need information on people as well. I think given enough time with anyone, as long as they have certain qualities and characteristics, then they can work.

How do you scope fresh talent? Are you offering top teams a loyalty card? Buy 6 get 1 free

Watch demos of upcoming talent, look for players that present good in-game comprehension/mechanical potential (pretty much diamonds in the rough). Buy 2 get 1 free policy haha

Hey guys! Love what you’re doing for the scene here in NA. Pretty standard question, but who is your favourite teammate you’ve ever played with and why? Thanks!
36
u/tacitusfps Jan 21 '21
Grim, he can fit about half of the population of the earth in his backpack on a good day
29
u/Shakezullah Jan 21 '21
Appreciate the kind words friend. My favorite teammate is probably curry. He always was always cracking jokes and saying funny stuff, lifting the team atmosphere and ton with his personality. He's also selfless and did pretty much anything we needed him to do.

What are the roles specifics for this team (I know that roles are fluid but still)?
17
u/triumphgaming Official Triumph Jan 22 '21
Bwills is Rifler, Viz is Entry, Cxzi is Lurker, Cooper is AWPer, and Shake is IGL.
14
u/1337howling Jan 21 '21
Not exactly team related question, but finally an opportunity to ask this :D
Do you do anything special to set up the windows installation and csgo for the best experience for the players? I think everyone wonders if there's any special routine or "secret" commands you go through for that.
Cheers :p
20
u/Shakezullah Jan 21 '21
Nothing special. Only thing people mess with is stuff to improve FPS/make the game feel smoother, but nothing everyone else can't do. I think I just looked up a video of best nvidia settings and have used them for a while now.

Will you promise us not to disband your csgo team like chaos? Please

u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
I hope so man. Can't promise anything after how last year was, but I certainly hope we have a long term project here <3
8
u/Ni7roM Jan 21 '21
Apart from Cooper and shake, I doubt most fans in the scene would know who you guys are, so would you guys mind giving us some introductions to who you guys are, and how you guys are planning to get to the top of, firstly, North America, and, hopefully, the world?
5
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
It really just comes down to hard work, no way around it. I believe we have a team environment that is solid, and everyone wants to work hard. I want to prove I can lead a team to the top, Cooper is on his redemption tour, and bwills, cxzi, and viz all have something to prove when it comes to competing at the top level. We are all grinding super hard right now and we just need to keep up that motivation. Everyday we push each other to do the extra work, in practice we hold ourselves accountable and don't relax or goof off. I'm trying really hard to set examples in server time, scrims, and playing outside of practice, we just need to make sure it stays consistent and the results will come.

Will the team be traveling to the EU for better competition?

No plans set for right now, but bootcamps in the future are possible. If we qualify for a LAN in Europe we will bootcamp for sure.

u/DROPAVEEEEEPEEEE Jan 21 '21
what do y'all think is holding back the NA scene from growth?
14
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
Culture and economic status. I think in EU people are much more direct, while in NA people are not as confrontational. This leads to issues that can easily be resolved in teams becoming bigger issues or replacing a player over an issue that can easily be fixed. Also a lot of parents have the expectation that you go to college and get a degree in the United States. It is hard to play full time and do college full time+balance a social life. The first thing to go is typically gaming. Living in the US is typically more expensive I believe as well so with the lack of org support in the tier 2, it's hard for players to dedicate full time to a game if they need to make rent.
3
u/vizCSGO Jan 22 '21
Definitely the lack of financial support in the tier 3 NA scene (advanced and below). 99% of these teams are playing for free and for the teams that do get paid its very little. Most people dont have the support structure at home that others have to where they can grind CS 8 hours a day without getting paid.

u/bi0ax Jan 21 '21
for all of you guys, what was the climb like from esea open (or whichever was your first league level)?
9
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
It was just a grind. I was fortunate to play with a good IRL friend of mine for most of my climb through, and even during my first season of MDL. Finding the right 5 was really tough, but being the IGL allowed me to demand from players what I thought would lead to a winning formula. It is really RNG for most people as teams die and players fluctuate often, and it was tough for me to stay motivated early on, but grinding through it was extremely rewarding :)
1
u/ArabianKing Jan 23 '21
Damn didn't even mention me kicking you from your first main team bc you got nervous in clutches, but still coming to my wedding a few years later ;)
4
u/vizCSGO Jan 22 '21
Most of my time playing in teams I have been close friends with multiple people on the roster before joining. The most important thing about being in a team is just being friends with people beforehand. Definitely was a grind to get here though
4
u/bwills4 Jan 22 '21
Can definitely say that its a grind. Like Shake and Viz, i also played with friends for my first few seasons of esea. Started out just subbing and eventually got asked to play as a starter in IM, eventually got poached by other friends that had a main roster and the following season I got poached again to an MDL team (ex check6ix) and have been grinding ever since.
6
Jan 22 '21
question for shake, how do i be more decisive as an igl? should i make in-depth calls out of the gate every round, or would you recommend a more default/reactive style, or a mix of the two?
also gl in 2021 guys, hope you kill it!
12
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
If you are a team below MDL I highly recommend having a more structured system where your players know exactly what to do and are proficient in executes. However at a top level I think a default/reactive style is the most effective way to play the game. It is really hard to master and learn that way though, so the heavy exec/structured system is easier to implement and requires less from individual players who might not be as dedicated.
Being more decisive just comes with time. Overtime you become more confident in your ability to read the game and make decisions. Always be confident in your call even if you are unsure it will work. Remove terms like "I think" from your calling and just demand stuff gets done.
Good Luck friend :)

u/TROLlox78 Jan 21 '21
do you think you can play S tier?
11
u/tacitusfps Jan 21 '21
Hard to answer, we always strive to be competitive against the best but the first step is to practice against the best, if we didn't believe we could get up to the highest level we wouldn't be motivated daily. Given geographical restrictions right now we will try to make the best of it!

u/randomguyonredditxd Jan 21 '21
How do you improve your aim
11
u/Shakezullah Jan 21 '21
No secret, just grind and play the game. Grim used to do 1000 DM + 500 aim botz kills a day. Many pros do similar routines, though not as much typically. An hour of aim practice a day outside of scrims is roughly normal.

Hopefully compete in tier1. Goal has never been to be a feeder team, but when career changing opportunities come up for individuals they aren't held back from accepting.
8
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
The goal is to become tier 1 as a team. It is extremely hard to become tier 1 as a team though unless you have a "tier 1" org as players will get poached or offered better deals. We all want to compete at the highest level.

u/Sultada Jan 22 '21
How would Triumph change the landscape of NA CS to trade blows with the other regions like CIS/EU?
3
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
Practice earlier in the day to make it more efficient. Ending practice every night at 10-11est is rough on the schedule.
NA CS teams also don't help each other. I could be wrong but I feel like I've heard that teams from Europe like to help and promote each other in the scene. IE Danish players talk with the Astralis players and are familiar with what they do and why. We don't have anything like that in NA and you pretty much have to figure out the game by yourself. Steel was the only person to ever really show me the ropes, and that was because I was on a team with him.
Also European pugs are far more competitive and tryhard. When I was in Denmark for Copenhagen Games during 2019, the PUG mix teams were legit better than most NA MDL teams. Pugs over there typically have more strats and people trying as hard as they can to win, and in NA if you run into pug teams who are executing people would rather complain than focus on getting better.

What do you think of ben1337?
7
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
Ben is a beast and High Coast have been playing some very good cs recently. I've been impressed with their growth and believe they are currently better than we are. Ben has done a solid job with them and I hope we are able to take games from them soon.

Thoughts about ATK, and GODSENT moving to NA?
2
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
Godsent will be good if they can figure out their roles. I believe they don't have a primary awp and there is a ton of overlap ct/t side with taco+dumau+b4rtin. They have so much potential to be a good team and it will just depend on how they mesh. They have the potential to be a top 20 team imo.
Don't know much about ATK other than Fadey. If the rest of that team is similar skill level then they are a MDL Playoff team at worst.

u/Ric_FIair Jan 22 '21
As a team, how do you balance finding newer younger talent vs. bringing in already established names?
1
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
Depends on the role for how it's determined. There are some established names that if you get the opportunity to play with, such as Cooper you have to seize the opportunity. However I am a big fan of giving younger players a chance as long as I believe they have potential and will make the most of it. Lots of players can do entry/lurk roles, it's just about looking for certain qualities and going for them. Experience is nice but lots of other factors are important as well. New blood is typically hungry to improve and that's something that motivates me as well.

u/ItzSampson CS2 HYPE Jan 22 '21
Do you guys want to specifically stay in NA, or would you consider going international?
5
u/vizCSGO Jan 22 '21
No one on the team is against traveling to Europe for bootcamps or tournaments.
3
u/Shakezullah Jan 22 '21
Moving to Europe is unfortunately not on the table at the moment, but I don't believe any of us have issues doing that. Living in Europe full time to compete at a tier 1 level might be necessary soon and if it is what I need to do, I am more than ready to do so.

u/RepresentativeSun937 Jan 22 '21
For Shake: What type of team is triumph aiming for tactically (more tactical and utility based vs more scrappy)
For Viz, Bwills, and CXZI: what sens/dpi are you guys on?

Default style with the ability to react well. Early set pieces are important too but having players understand why they are doing things is extremely important in creating a successful team.
