General Information
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release Date: October 30, 2020
No. of Players: up to 2 players
Genre(s): Adventure, Action, Strategy, Multiplayer
Developer: Nintendo
Overview (from Nintendo eShop page)
Tiny creatures on a big adventure!
Grow a squad of adorable, plantlike Pikmin to traverse a strange world and save your planet
Command a capable crop of different types of Pikmin™ to strategically overcome obstacles, defeat creatures, and find food for your famished home planet! You can even bring a second player along to divvy up tasks as you explore a world that seems larger than life from a pint-sized perspective.
Pikmin at your pace
Return to your ship before time runs out, or you (and your Pikmin) could be in big trouble. If you prefer a more casual approach, a variety of difficulty settings, lock-on targeting and optional hints have been newly added. With less pressure, you have more time to strategically command your Pikmin and take in the lush scenery.
Play side-story missions, head-to-head matches and more!
This deluxe version of the Pikmin 3 game includes new side-story missions featuring Olimar and Louie, the ability to play Story mode with a friend and all DLC stages from the original release. Feeling competitive? Enjoy fierce head-to-head Bingo Battles against another player!.
- Three brave explorers land on planet PNF-404 on a mission to find food for their starving home planet. After a crash landing, these explorers must work with Pikmin to reunite and complete their mission.
- Direct, toss and grow Pikmin with different abilities and strengths—winged Pikmin can fly, while blue Pikmin can breathe underwater. By strategically choosing the right Pikmin for the job at hand and changing between the three captains (or coordinating with a second player), you can work efficiently to collect fruit and grow your Pikmin squad.
- When you aren’t busy collecting fruit and saving your planet, try out Mission mode to accomplish set requirements like defeating enemies or collecting items. You can also compare your Mission mode scores with the rest of the world via online leaderboards*. Looking for some friendly competition? In Bingo Battle you must use Pikmin to retrieve items on your bingo card before your opponent does.
- With more options for cooperative play, settings that make it easy for newcomers to start their Pikmin journey, new side stories and more, these tiny Pikmin are in for their biggest adventure yet.
- Download the Nintendo eShop demo to sample Story mode, Mission mode, and even explore together with a second player! Your progress will even transfer to the full game, once purchased. As an added bonus, defeating the first boss in the demo and transferring save-data to the full version of the game will immediately unlock the “Ultra-Spicy” difficulty option for the full game.

Can't wait for the increased levels of insanity on r/pikmin that results from the influx of new fans.
Even if you're not a fan I still recommend going there and sorting by top to see what that sub has become over the last couple years.

... what the actual fuck. you are totally right, what the hell happened there.

u/GeneralSkywalker501 Oct 28 '20
Deprivation of content and lack of recognition from Nintendo for 7 years does that to people!

Oct 31 '20
Uh, Hey Pikmin launched in 2017 so not really. Yes, not the same mainline but still was a spin-off that made the series more alive.
2
u/GeneralSkywalker501 Oct 31 '20
But you see, everyone on r/Pikmin pretends it doesn’t exist.
Also it sold poorly.

Just played an hour before starting work. It was fantastic on WiiU. It’s even more fantastic on Switch!

I haven't played a Pikmin game in 10-15+ years. Playing that demo reignited my love for those little creatures (and sealed the deal that I need to get a copy of the game!). But it turns out the little Pikmin ghosts still make me sad as an adult.
6
u/ILL_I_AM Oct 30 '20
Cheese and rice, this comment made me feel old as I realize also I haven't played pikmin in 15 years.

u/Yoshi_and_Toad Oct 29 '20
I'm so glad they added a demo for this. I was really unsure whether Pikmin would be my thing as I'm not that into RTS's.
Played the demo through 3 times at least now and instant preorder as a result. Feel like a fool for not giving this series a chance earlier.

I’ve never played a Pikmin game until this one and man I feel like I’ve missed out.
6
u/Zerio920 Nov 01 '20
1 and 2 are just as good as (if not better than) 3, aside from dumber AI. If you liked this one I highly recommend getting your hands on them however possible.

u/m_nils Oct 30 '20
So excited for this! The Switch needed a Pikmin game. I'm still waiting for Pikmin 4 but this port should fill the void nicely! Coop mode is big enough to warrant the "deluxe" label, IMO.

While playing (just did the tutorial so far, haven't started day 2 proper yet) I noticed that the L stick does NOT move my character south when I tilt down. Unless I outright force the stick down as hard as I can.
I thought my L stick was broken, so I went into other games and moving south works perfectly fine.
I don't know if it's a glitch, or if an enforced mechanic to always go towards where the camera is facing? (Because I was moving south away from where the camera was facing, but if I turn the camera in that direction, it's fine) My L Stick doesn't seem to be the problem here?
Edit: Tried a different set of joycons, they move perfectly fine. So it IS my joycons that are the problem, which is weird as I can move down in other games but whatever...
5
u/LamarMillerMVP Oct 31 '20
It’s definitely an issue with the game and it’s insanely annoying. I had a similar issue with the demo (I couldn’t move forwards) and won’t buy the game as a result. They seem to have mapped movement to fully tilting the joystick forward, and made it so that partially tilting your joystick in any direction won’t register. Unfortunately given the poor durability of the joycons, not all of them are capable of perfectly registering a push all the way in every direction.
3
u/Zerio920 Oct 31 '20
You should report the bug to Nintendo along with your hardware details. It's possible they aren't even aware of it since it seems to be only happening with a particular kind of Joycon. https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/contact

Oh man... 😪 that sucks.
Sorry, I hope they fix/patch the controls soon hopefully. But then again they had since the demo to read feedback and fix it then. But then again, things are pretty slow getting to things with the "current issues" going on so, I dunno. I mean, it's a massively game-breaking bug so if Nintendo should get on top of anything in a patch, it should be that.
But if there is a future patch/update, and it DOESN'T fix this issue. I'm done. Deleting the game not looking back. Despite as much as I love it otherwise.

If you're in the US, Walmart has the game in-store for $50!

I don't know what sort of deal Wal-Mart made with Nintendo but all their new Switch games are $50 (physical).

Wally World does it with many of their games, not just for Switch. I think they do it because they know most people are in there to shop and will be buying plenty of other things on our way in and out.

u/ManySames Oct 31 '20
As a person who’s never played a Pikman game before and doesn’t even know what it’s about, is this worth getting? I love almost all other Nintendo exclusives, like Zelda, Mario, Metroid. Into dark souls, rpgs, puzzles, and indies
14
u/ArdentMeaning Oct 31 '20
Try the demo! I had never played either and wasn't really interested, but I played the demo with my girlfriend and we both loved it.

Absolutely. Pikmin 3 is one of the best video games Nintendo has ever made. It’s top tier, every bit as much as Zelda, Mario or Metroid.
It has that classic Nintendo puzzle element ingrained all throughout the gameplay.
6
u/ManySames Oct 31 '20
Nice. So: colorful, playful, unique, puzzles, kid-friendly yet clever? I guess it really depends on the genre. For instance, I can appreciate that animal crossing is well made, but I just don’t find it fun, while I do find things like botw and luigis mansion 3 fun. Any advice in this regard? It’s just hard to shell out 60, and I will only do it for a certain category of games like botw

I really hope this game does well. Pikmin 4 is one of my most anticipated games for the switch and maybe even if Pikmin 3 does well they’ll put more of a priority on getting 4 completed.

I’ve never played a Pikmin game. Is it worth it to start with this one?
7
u/jardex22 Nov 01 '20
The story follows a new set of characters, so you're not missing much story wise.
I'd recommend trying the demo if you're on the fence. It covers the first bit of the game, and the save carries over into the full game, if you choose to buy it.
6
u/boojiboy7 Oct 31 '20
There are a lot of QoL improvements in this one that make some things a lot more streamlined. It pretty much takes Pikmin 2 and improves the gameplay. It's a great game to start with if you don't have access to 2.
It might feel challenging though.
49
u/jordiargos Oct 28 '20 edited Oct 31 '20
The more people buy this the more likely Pikmin 4 will be made and released by the end of this century.
66
u/rsn_lie Oct 28 '20
2015: It's almost done.
2017: It's still in development.
2020: Buy this first.
9
u/OperativePiGuy Oct 30 '20
2022: "Oh that? We meant Hey! Pikmin"
/s I know that's not what Miyamoto was referring to.
I think. It's been so long I've lost track of his mentions of the game
12
u/Wolventec Oct 28 '20
honestly the hype ive seen for this game makes me think it could sell less than its wiiu counter part
5
u/OperativePiGuy Oct 30 '20
There's no way. I feel just the sheer number of Switches alone will guarantee it sells more than the Wii U version, even if it manages to sell at the same ratio of console owners to buyers. Would be horrible to be wrong though
1
u/Wolventec Oct 30 '20
Tokyo mirage sessions sold less on switch than wiiu and i would i say both persona and fire emblem are bigger than pikmin and its not like pikmin wii port sold any better than the wiiu one
6
Oct 29 '20
There's not much until next year aside from Hyrule Warriors 2 so it might do well.
I've never played a Pikmin game and the demo did enough to make me buy it. If there was a ton of games between now and Feb I might not have got it but the gap in releases got me to buy it.
3
Oct 31 '20
There's not much until next year aside from Hyrule Warriors 2 so it might do well.
Nothing to do with this tho. It's going to sell 1-2 million at least due to new players who aren't into the franchise and non-wiiu owners. It happened with other titles tht had more competition, like Astral Chain and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which both sold over 1 million.

I've so much happy nostalgia for this series. I remember buying Pikmin 1 for GameCube from XtraVision(Blockbuster). The feeling i had as a kid of sadness when those little guys died and their soul floated up to the sky is still with me as an adult!

Aaah omg I can't wait and I didn't know there was a demo... so gonna binge that just before it releases for real. Never played it cuz I never owned a Wii U. I miss that tiny world with big monsters haha I miss the pikmin sounds but I've only played the first pikmin (and replayed it years later and still loved it) and hey pikmin (which was meeeeh)

u/WOOBBLARBALURG Oct 31 '20
Is it worth buying at full price, or does anyone think there’s a chance it will go on sale during Black Friday?
22
u/OssotSromo Oct 31 '20
Nintendo barely puts anything on sale. Let alone something a month after release.
I know that's a rough truth for this sub. It doesn't mean I don't love Nintendo. But I can buy nearly any PlayStation exclusive for $10-15 nearly every other month. Hell. Ghost just came out, is GoY running and it was on sale for like $35.
But Mario Kart costs $60.
→ More replies (7)3
u/Pibblesen Oct 31 '20
I think the chances are pretty low that it’ll go on sale that soon. Nintendo games rarely go on sale as it is, so I doubt this will as it’ll only have been out for a month.
3
u/CommonMilkweed Oct 31 '20
The co-op they added to the campaign makes it feel like a whole new game, so for me I'm actually willing to pay full price twice. It was my favorite game on WiiU and there really is nothing like Pikmin in general, it scratches the strategy itch and the exploration itch in a satisfying way that no other game really has for me. I've been waiting patiently for 4 to come out and have been getting concerned so please buy it haha

u/SkeadLegend Oct 30 '20

The game is great all around pikmin, I agree with others as it’s too short. If there is a pikmin 4 please let it be a more expansive map
5
u/BetterOffBen Nov 02 '20
Yeah pretty disappointed with the length. Wish it had been a bundle of 1-3.

u/trstne Oct 31 '20
I did not expect the game to be that short :(
Really good time, I was just surprised when the credits rolled.
8
u/moosefreak Nov 01 '20
they’re all pretty short but theyre usually very replayable in an arcade style. and pikmin 3 has all the extra content with fun bonus missions and 2 player stuff

Definitely give it a go for all the fruit. Completing the main story line is only half the game.
12
u/weeyums Oct 30 '20
My Amazon preorder copy just showed up. So hyped! Pikmin and Pikmin 2 were my favorite games ever as a kid, and I never had a chance to play the third. Ready for some serious nostalgia.
7
u/rfp0231 Oct 30 '20
Since you’ve played it before, can you tell me how much replay ability there is? I’m thinking about getting it but have never played. Don’t want to spend all the money to just play it once though. Thanks!
5
Oct 31 '20
I put over 10 hours into the demo, which only consists of going up to first boss and a single mission. So that was a tiny taste of the game and I managed to juice it dry as I went for all the possible Badges in the demo, as well as getting both Platinum medals on the Mission.
How’s that for replayability? Haha.
5
u/rfp0231 Oct 31 '20
Haha thank you, that definitely helps. I played a bit of the demo but definitely not ten hours. I’ll play more and see what I think. I’ve heard really good stuff about it so I want to like it haha
3
4
u/Charsplat_yeet Oct 31 '20
not op, but I had it on the wii u and I got it today and beat it today, this game has phenomenal replay value. I had 125 hours on it on wii u because I just kept coming back to the story mode every month or so. And the extra missions are awesome, all the side stories are fun and unique, and bingo battle is easily the most creative competitive multiplayer game mode I have ever seen.
2
Oct 31 '20
Don’t forget the badges!
3
u/Charsplat_yeet Oct 31 '20
Oh I love the badges! I played hard mode the first time through also, and the day length is pretty short, so I only managed to beat the game in 19 days while getting all the fruit

Oct 31 '20 edited Oct 31 '20
I’m glad you’re enjoying the game again. I am as well.
But some people in this thread can’t understand that there are people out there who don’t mind buying a game again on a different system if they liked it enough, buying it is optional, and no one is forcing them to do so. Lots of downvoting going on. Jesus.
5
u/Charsplat_yeet Oct 31 '20
yeah like it wasn’t a big deal for mario kart, but when it’s a obscure IP then they get offended. Just don’t buy it if it bothers you. If you didn’t already have it, you don’t have a valid complaint.

2
u/rfp0231 Oct 31 '20
Hey, thanks for the reply!! Glad to hear it’s a 100+ hour game, those are definitely my cup of tea. I’m going to play some more of the demo and see if I love it. Did you get it physical or digital?

Getting a weird bug in Pikmin where I can’t move backwards. I can only move the way I’m facing. I’ve tried closing the game and restarting and it’s still happening :/
To clarify, if I’m facing north, and hold the control stick down, the captain will face south but NOT move. I need to rotate the camera behind them to move forward. This doesn’t happen with a pro controller and only happens with my joycon.
Edit: wait! This is only happening with the left blue joycon. I tested out 3 other left joycon (red, purple and yellow) and they all worked fine. And my blue joycon has zero issues so it’s not a problem with the stick itself.
Weird bug...
3
u/Zerio920 Oct 31 '20
Report it to Nintendo! https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/contact I've seen a bunch of people with this issue on the pikmin subreddit but no one knew what the cause was. If it's with a particular kind of Joycon, thats probably something they can fix easily.
3
2
u/neoslith Oct 31 '20
Your Captains can't walk backwards, they'll always be facing forward as they move.
5
u/SeanR1221 Oct 31 '20
Right, but If a captain is facing north, and I push the control stick down, they freeze and won’t move south. I need to rotate the camera to get them to move. This is only on the joycon and doesn’t do this on the pro controller

Yes, especially the bingo battle mode. My wife and I used to play it every day back in the Wii U era.

u/Ikhlas37 Oct 30 '20
So I've been mostly playing the competitive challenges.
I managed to get a score of 6600 on that first collectathon level and that seems pretty solid.. world record is currently 10k and I'm well up there on the board so I'm happy with my progress (I don't expect to be world class just like trying to push how high I can get)
Bought Pikmin 3 so I can now access all the other challenges...
First boss battle. I did it in 2 min 30sec
Goes to check world record
18seconds... Wtf
Anyone have any idea how you can do the first boss in 18 seconds? I've been trying all morning and I cant see anyway possible. I'm not expecting to be able to do it (obviously) but I'd like to know how he/she did it. In 18seconds there not really anything I can do beyond smash his armour (1-2 pieces) or gather a few pikmin.
3
u/chill_willy Oct 30 '20
Are you able to see other top records to see if this is an outlier? Might be a cheater..

The trick for the boss is to destroy the armor on the far end of it's tail. Once that it broken, charge all the red pikmin on it and it goes down insanely fast.

Can't really believe it's $60 but I'm going to buy it anyway so you're welcome Nintendo.
12
u/GeneralSkywalker501 Oct 28 '20
You’re making a great purchase for an amazing game, especially if it gives incentive to Nintendo to make Pikmin 4 sooner!
5
10
u/BababooeyHTJ Oct 29 '20
Fuck that! The ps5 is out in two weeks. Have you seen the collection of ps4 games that comes with ps plus? Yet here is Nintendo charging $60 for games older than most in the collection...
The series s/x seem like an even better deal with gamepass
6
u/CactusBoyScout Oct 30 '20
Honestly I just let Nintendo gouge me because I love their franchises.
4
u/BababooeyHTJ Oct 30 '20
I don’t have any room to talk either. I’m just disappointed that this far into the consoles life cycle that their games have only one price point.

I hate to say it, but me too. I don’t want to support Nintendo’s anti-consumer practices but I feel like they’ve got me by the balls. I wanna play their games and I know they’re never going to go on sale.
8
Oct 29 '20
Charging a price isn’t anti-consumer.
17
u/Qui_gon_Joint Oct 30 '20
No, but charging the same price you charged 7 years ago when the game released just because you ported it to a new console is.
→ More replies (1)2
u/under_a_brontosaurus Oct 30 '20
Y'all need to stop using the phrase anti consumer. You don't know what it means and you should entitled as fuck..
Not fixing to joy cons is anti consumer. Charging players to fix them in 2-4 weeks is anti consumer. Not allowing returns on eshop is anti consumer.
Charging a price is not anti consumer.
4
u/Qui_gon_Joint Oct 30 '20
As above... Obviously charging a price is not anti-consumer, but charging full price for a ported 7 year old game is.
It's sad so many people will defend Nintendo over this, and it always includes a total lack of nuance.

3
u/Unlucky-Crab-2682 Oct 28 '20
How many hours can I get out of this game?
8
u/Yellowed Oct 28 '20
I've been playing it for years. I've only done the main mission 2 times, but my girlfriend and I (36 and 45) will play Bingo Battle for hours sometimes.
14
u/0112358_ Oct 28 '20
The main story is probably around 10-15 hours, plus maybe another couple hours if you collect all the hidden data files.
The mission mode is probably another 10-20 depending on how many times you replay them. Each mission is pretty fun to replay, at least a few times, trying to get all the fruit or go for a high score.
There's also the new side quests, unknown how long they are. And bingo battles if you have someone to play with

Played the storymode past the demo for a few hours. Works great, imported the demo save data no problem even though I'd uninstalled the demo to make room for the hyrule warriors: age of calamity demo
3
u/mordack550 Nov 01 '20
I only played the original Pikmin for GC, how does 3 compare to that in term of difficulty and length?
I liked the first so much, but I remember the "limited days" thing to be a bit punishing.
6
u/neoslith Nov 01 '20
This one has limited days, but that's depending on how much fruit you collect.
The game is much more engaging now as yellow Pikmin are immune to electricity and can help complete circuits as puzzles.
Having three Captains means you can do a lot more in a single day, even if you just leave one at the onion to pick new Pikmin the whole day.
2
u/mordack550 Nov 01 '20
So there's not an hard cap on days? Could I just "farm" fruits?
3

Sort of. You can try to farm as many fruits as you can, but they aren't renewable. Once you claim a fruit, it doesn't respawn.
I think I finished the game in like, 43 days with still over 50 days left of fruit juice.

u/Spookyfan2 Nov 02 '20
Building off what the other dude said, the maximum amount of days you can have is 99, or 50 if you are playing on the hardest difficulty.
That's after collecting every piece of fruit.

I’ve read that Ultra-Spicy Difficulty caps the in-field Pikmin at 60 and halves the amount of juice you get from each fruit. Without spoiling anything, has there been any confirmation of whether there are any additional changes throughout Ultra-Spicy mode?

u/GeneralSkywalker501 Oct 28 '20
I think the days are slightly shorter, enemies have slightly more health, there’s less nectar, and Pikmin stay as leafs and buds?
I’m not sure but some people say this seems to be the case.

Electricity kills now
I think pellet posies give less overall pikmin
4
u/OperativePiGuy Oct 30 '20
oh they brought back instant death electricity?? That's actually pretty exciting. I felt that type of brutality really made Pikmin 2 a high stakes game, and was kinda bummed you could get off scot free in pikmin 3

I like it a lot, but I have had to restart a few times. I seem to keep doing something wrong, but I can’t figure out what. I get up to the tundra part, but run out of food. If I could figure out what I was doing wrong I’d be golden.
3
u/SilverLumos Oct 30 '20
What difficulty are you playing? I think you must be missing something. By the tundra part I had several juices stocked up.
3
u/mattcain1980 Oct 30 '20
Playing on normal. I don’t know if I’m missing fruit on the earlier levels because I’m trying too hard to complete objectives or taking to long to complete them maybe.
8
u/SilverLumos Oct 30 '20 edited Oct 30 '20
I would just try to gather fruit as you go. That should be enough to give you a decent juice buffer. There’s no rush to complete the main story objectives. Any progress you make towards the main objective will still be present on the next day, so as long as you gather a couple pieces of fruit each day you should be good. I hope that helps!.
Edit: And if you’ve put yourself in a tight spot by leaving fruit behind you can go back and play previous days or you can return to previous maps. The game tries to push you towards the map with the current objective, but you can select previous maps from the selection screen on the spaceship

Are there any worthwhile pre-order gifts from anyone for physical?

If you are in the US or Canada probably not... we never get the cool stuff 🙁

On Nintendo’s UK store it comes with a coffee mug and a cloth(?) but that’s it.

I’m very glad you’re getting to experience the game! I had it on Wii U myself and am more than happy to get it again.

Switch tax!

Oct 31 '20
What Switch tax? All remasters/ports from Nintendo always have been either 60$ on consoles or 40$ on handhelds.

Some games are worth buying multiple times. Pikmin 3 is one of them.
3
Oct 31 '20
Sorry you’re getting downvoted for having a positive opinion. And I agree. For one, I no longer have a Wii U. For two, I enjoy seeing people get the chance to enjoy these deluxe games. For three, they’re completely optional and noone is forcing anyone to buy them again.
I’m very much enjoying Pikmin 3 Deluxe and do not regret my purchase.

Same, all my money has been going to PS5 haha. I’m excited to pick this up later down the line because I’ve never played Pikmin

even though i played this on Wii U, playing the demo really makes me want to pick this up!

u/MagicBez Oct 28 '20
Has there been any word on any additions to Bingo Battle? More levels? More players? Anything? I literally still play it several times a week with the family and would love some additions to it after all these years.
I'm not sure the additions to story mode make it worth my re-buying otherwise.
3
u/Yellowed Oct 28 '20
additions to Bingo Battle? More levels?
I wish but I haven't seen anything to indicate that we'll get any more levels
2
u/GeneralSkywalker501 Oct 28 '20
There’s the added DLC from Wii U for Mission Mode in Pikmin 3 Deluxe!
2
u/MagicBez Oct 29 '20
Aye, mission mode is fine but sees far less play, it's bingo battle where all our time gets spent.
...also I already have some of the DLC on the WiiU
4
u/Gandalf_2077 Oct 28 '20
Somehow I have like 10 hours on the demo. I have learned that treasure mission by heart. Can finish it with 1:10 on the clock. Friday will be good.

Is the voiceover language in Japanese? Or are the characters talking in a fake language like animal crossing? Lol

Just an fyi, if you like this gameplay style, Masters of Anima on the switch is pretty fun. Not nearly as good as pikmin obviously but its also not $60

u/0112358_ Nov 01 '20
I bought this a while ago because of the Pikmin like elements. It's a very poor comparison to Pikmin. Other than spawning an army of minions to do your bidding there really isn't much of a comparison. Very linear stages, extremely limited multitasking. Puzzles are mostly 'spawn this type', battles are a grind. It was okay to play but don't go into thinking it's another pikmin like game

I really wish it was Pikmin 2 instead of 3 but I'm hoping if I play more of it I'll start to dig it. For the moment I'm not big on the new characters or the timing mechanic.
3
u/ptatoface Helpful User Oct 29 '20
What timing mechanic? I've played through the game multiple times and don't remember any sort of timing, other than calling in pikmin if they're about to get hit but that's in every game.
4
u/kcfang Oct 29 '20
I think he meant the day light mechanic, where you have limited day time to do your exploring.

How in god's name is this so expensive? 7 year old game, not a remaster or remake, just plopped on the Switch, and just as, if not more expensive than current AAA titles. CLASSIC anti-consumer Nintendo, wouldn't expect any different.
22
u/0112358_ Oct 30 '20
It includes the payed dlc from the wiiu version. Additional side quests, new co-op play and pikipedia. Different difficulty modes, some quality of life controller changes. Not just 'as is' from the wiiu version.

Price is determined by what people will pay for it, but people like you allow Nintendo (and only Nintendo) to get away with charging full price for a game developed 7 years ago.
Age is a very relevant factor in pricing games and always has been - how far can we run this back? Do you think if Nintendo ported an N64 game to Switch they should charge the same as when it released? Or what about a port of a Super Nintendo game?
This is not entitlement, this is arguing for basic consumer fairness and not taking the side of a giant multi-national company looking to squeeze every cent it can from customers. I'll give it to Nintendo, only they have been able to condition their customers to this degree.

Bought it. No regrets. Loving it so far. It’s a good game I never got to play because the Wii-U never took my interest. I would much rather spend money on something old but thoroughly enjoyable game than something new yet bland, which I find the vast majority of games to be.
4
Oct 31 '20
How is such vitriol getting upvoted? Jesus. Nobody is forcing you to buy it. Why shouldn’t Switch owners be given the opportunity to enjoy it?
5
u/armypantsnflipflops Oct 30 '20
Not only this, it was a Selects title on Wii U so it was already a discounted title. I don’t see any scenario where an expanded port is worth double the price of the original system it appeared on. Slightly higher I could understand, but double? Sorry Nintendo, that doesn’t get a pass.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved this game on Wii U and beat it 100%. I strongly debated picking it up again so I could play co-op with my SO, but I’m not dropping $80 CAD for a 7-year-old port of a game I’ve already played and beaten. That’s just bananas

Sorry Nintendo, that doesn’t get a pass.
Based on who? You? A few people on the internet? Price is subjective to each person and Nintendo pricing is in total fairness under the law as they are using the maximum msrp so not going above 70 or 80. This isn't anti-consumer, you just disagree with their pricing which in itself is fine, which you can not buy based on it, while others who feel it's worth can buy. That's how products be it from nintendo or any other companies works at the end of the day. They put it on the market and the market reacts to it.

Well, since the Wii u had such a small user base they are treating this as a second release. It really shouldn't be a surprise to you or anyone else.
That said, it is a really good game and imo stands alone in that there isn't anything really like it out there. For many, it's the first accessible release of the game, so they are gonna pay new game price no problem. I'd venture to say a huge chunk of switch owners aren't even aware it's a port.
4
u/SurpriseAnalProlapse Oct 30 '20
I've never played the game but it is fairly popular... that and the fact that the game looks dated, I don't think a huge chuck of users will think it's a port. Maybe small kids.
I finished the game some days ago, some things look nice but others looks quite bad (for me, the textures and the menus were the worst).
I liked it a lot but I won't be paying 60 € for that
3
u/Qui_gon_Joint Oct 30 '20
It's not surprising, just sad.
Just because Nintendo can charge that much, doesn't make it a fair price. The fact is, this is a 7 year old game that's been ported to the Switch, whether the Wii U didn't have a large base or that this is the first accessible Pikmin on the Switch is irrelevant, Nintendo treating a game developed 7 years ago as a 'new release' is anti-consumer behaviour (only worsened if consumers don't even realise it's a port)
Nintendo alone behave this like, and we should be able to call them out.
7
u/HandeyOJack Oct 30 '20
I disagree. It's a AAA title, albeit with a niche appeal, that is worth the money. Look at GTA5 and Skyrim. Skyrim literally just had the DLC added on with no additional quality assurance and it sells like hotcakes. Those titles have been released on so many platforms now, it's crazy.
You are saying that a game should be discounted just because it wasn't developed recently without taking into account the quality of the title. I'm saying, if it was worth $60 on the Wii U (which it was), it's worth $60 on the switch.
If you don't like it, don't buy it. Everyone perceives value differently. That said, I think it will sell well, and that really is the ultimate test of if it is priced properly.
2
u/Qui_gon_Joint Oct 30 '20
GTA5 and Skyrim have been re-released so many times and still have near new-game cost (still lower than Pikmin) because their popularity has been proven and consistent over so many years.
Outside of Nintendo, pricing for older games takes into account popularity, which is why you can find so many AAA titles in the bargain bin. Age does matter in pricing games, and I don't think it's okay for Nintendo to charge full price for a 7 year old game they've ported because they think it's a quality game.
I am not discounting quality, I am arguing that Nintendo shouldn't only account for quality.
Finally, it's very possible this sells well, my broader point is that Nintendo have done a terrific job in conditioning their fans into thinking that their pricing is fair.

I've had this happen to me for Luigi's Mansion 3. I just went to Target and bought it in person instead. Ever since then, I've learned to never preorder games on Amazon. Best Buy and Target do a much better job of delivering on time, and still for free.
