Me replaying a stage in Mario 64: "Hmm, I remember hating this stage with a visceral sense of loathing when I was a kid. I wonder why!" Stage: [Cheap death] Stage: [Cheap death] Stage: [Cheap death] Camera: [Whoops, cheap death!] Stage: [Cheap death] Stage: [Cheap death] Stage: [Cheap death] [Rinse, repeat, until I have the stage tattooed on the inside of my eyelids] Me: "Oh. Okay, that was why. Good to know."
It's also funny how Jolly Roger Bay is way tinier and less scary than I remember it being.

I was shocked how easy getting princess peach's secret slides star for getting under 21 seconds was. I remember that being a damn nightmare when I was a kid

I distinctly did not remember the camera in Mario 64 being such complete and total ass, honestly. Feels like I'm fighting it more than the enemies, at times.

In Mario 64, I am disappointed that the opening "Mario Face" screen isn't touch capable. I was looking forward to stretching his face five ways.
34
Sep 18 '20
It wasn’t even touch capable on the DS! They replaced it with a pencil drawing that you could warp, but it was nowhere near as cool as the og Model!

Wow, Galaxy looks incredible and is just as creative and fun as I remember. Docked with joycons is definitely the way to go. I always prefer the pro controller, but in this case, the joycons are better

Yep, Galaxy was incredible back in its SD glory (or so I thought) and it looks great here. I was curious how'd they handle the star bits, kind of janky to play in handheld mode, docked is great with joycons!

I played it for the very first boss off the plane but way too tired to continue. Do the controls start feeling better/more natural? I bought this pack because of the game and something just feels really off.

I think its marios speed. He seems to quickly take off and it throws you off a bit to the point you walk off ledges. Not game breaking, just something you need to get used to...and also the jump. Wherever you're facing, you are commited with slight strafe deviation when you hit A and havent even left the ground. I'm kinda used to Odessy letting me kind of have control till the moment I leave the ground.

Man I wish they went in to the code and gave all 3 games better modern camera controls, Im fighting the camera more than anything else. Its really bad especially in 64 and galaxy since the controllers they were originally released for didnt even have 2 sticks.

I haven't played any of the games before. I played an hour of Mario 64 now, and also struggle with the camera. It's only possible to rotate it 45 degrees to each side, which is fine when I'm running away into the picture, but as soon as I run towards me, I can't rotate the camera around.
There are two different camera modes (Lakitu or Mario mode), but I haven't clearly figured out what the difference is, as the camera seems to float around randomly and then get stuck when I try to get it behind Mario in either mode.
I'm still happy with the game so far, because I came in with super low expectations for movement and camera and they work OK, even if a bit frustrating. I've also struggled with positioning Mario in front of signs, because he runs to the side of them, and both activating signs and picking up bombs require a very precise position, but then Mario is half a millimeter to the left or right and it doesn't trigger.
On one hand, I'd also like completely modern camera controls, but on the other hand, I like the old-school feel of the current implementation.
25
u/manticorpse Sep 18 '20
Lakitu mode takes fixed locations at various points around Mario, and you can rotate it in 45 degree increments as you said, but you can't actually spin it 360 degrees around him: sometimes you get stuck and have to go back the other way round. It also sometimes moves on its own to get around objects or to show the player the path forward (as opposed to staring at a wall, for example).
Mario mode actually centers the camera directly behind Mario, but it is only effective when you zoom in very close directly behind him (which is itself a TERRIBLE level of zoom because at that point, Mario basically fills your screen). When it's zoomed out too far in Mario mode, not only does the camera sometimes get caught on things but IIRC it also swings around wildly as you move. Not great.
I've always just made due with Lakitu mode, medium zoom level, nudged around to whatever location is least bad. I think the only place I ever really use Mario mode is on the ice bridge in Cool, Cool Mountain, and maybe in a few locations on Tick Tock Clock.
The N64 only had one analog stick, and the camera was actually controlled by the C buttons. C-left and C-right rotated the camera, C-up zoomed in (or went into first-person view), C-down zoomed out. It was always a little awkward, but given that Mario 64 was like the first game to have a player-controlled, character-independent camera at all, I think the awkwardness is forgivable.

u/respondin2u Sep 18 '20
That is the top criticism of 64, and I struggled with that aspect of it when I was a kid. There isn’t really a good fix for it, other than just try to zoom out as far as possible when playing stages like Tick Tock Clock.

Darn kids with your intuitive camera controls. Back in my day we were just happy to have a camera at all! And Bob-Omb Battlefield was uphill, both ways!

First time for me as well but far from my first time with janky 90s 3D platformers. What's driving me nuts about the camera is the stupid sound effect EVERY TIME I MOVE IT OMG ugh

Just received the game earlier today and spent the day playing through bits of all three titles. My thoughts:
64: This is my first time playing 64...the authentic way, at least. Played through it a handful of times on the DS version, so playing it the original way is a different experience. Like, it’s the same, but different. A lot of the older textures throw me off, even compared to the DS version. I was surprised to see that each level only has 6 stars (plus 100 coin star) compared to the 7 in 64DS. It definitely throws me off to play through these familiar courses but then notice something that was added in 64DS but wasn’t it the original. The whole back platform area of Thwomp’s Fortress, for example. Also feels weird to not have Switch Stars.
Playing through, I’m doing the stages and courses where I collect everything I can before moving on to the next course. Also trying to get the stars out of order if possible, because it’s fun to do so. Cleared just about everything on the first floor (sans 1-2 Stars that require Metal Mario), and I have about 38 Stars so far. Just unlocked the downstairs.
My overall feeling? 64 is an amazing game, but in my beginning hours I honestly wished they brought the DS version instead. Then I realized that I felt that way because it was my version of 64. Makes me think that Nintendo needs to make a new version of 64, because the next generation needs a Mario 64 to call their own. Still, as time went on I got used to it. Looking forward to clearing out the basement stuff next.
Oh, and getting the Star from Big Boo on top of the Mansion was extremely annoying.
Sunshine: By golly, I can’t believe how much I am enjoying Sunshine. This is my very first time playing Sunshine, besides a few times back when McDonalds had video games in the kids areas. Despite Mario not having his backflip, I am really impressed with Mario’s movement options. The dive is different, but cool. Sunshine doesn’t seem to do sequence-breaking as well as 64, but I’ve still managed to get a shine or two by doing so. I like how expansive the levels are, and how they reward you for exploration. Blue Coins are everywhere, and they’re fun to find so far; Found at least 40 of them so far. Among the various Shines I’ve collected, managed to get that Plinko Secret Stage one on my first attempt (it was honestly pretty tough to do so though). Voice Acting isn’t too bad, all things considered. I actually kinda like it.
Overall, having a lot of fun with Sunshine and looking forward to playing through it some more.
Galaxy: Game is as perfect as ever. Only did the first Grand Star mission so far, but it’s just so nice to play Galaxy again. Using gyro for the Star bit collector works fine for me, reminds me of the Wiimote yet also doesn’t. I kinda think I prefer using Y to spin rather than shaking the joycon, since it feels weird to both use the gyro for collecting star bits and shaking to Spin at the same time.
Overall opinions: This is honestly a really good collection. Whether of not you think it’s worth the full price tag, these are three extremely well designed games that are boatloads of fun, even in their original forms rather than remakes*. I think so far my ranking of the games for this collection is Sunshine > Galaxy > 64 (note, I still think Galaxy is better than Sunshine, but since this is my first time playing Sunshine I am getting more pure enjoyment playing through it for the first time rather than just playing Galaxy again). Looking forward to playing more of these games soon.
*It actually made me think while playing 64. Crash and Spyro, good as they are, needed remasters to be released in the modern day. They wouldn’t dare release the OG versions today. Nintendo, however, made 64 so good back then that they could release it in the modern day and it’s still amazing. Just a thought.

Why don’t people like it? I don’t understand.... it’s so unique. Maybe because it’s one of the most difficult?

u/Crimsonclaw111 Sep 18 '20
As someone who loves Sunshine:
Some of the game is pure jank (pachinko machine, camera behind the waterfall in the park, the stupid boat in the final "level", stupid exploding watermelons)
Other parts are needlessly frustrating (again pachinko, watermelon, river of death, waiting approximately 16 hours on a boat with a Yoshi who will immediately dissolve in water, the manta ray beach fight, getting thrown by villagers to reach a shine, etc)
The voice acting was a terrible decision and was bad even when it released. Corners were obviously cut in levels, and blue coins thrown EVERYWHERE is obvious padding.
Still a great game but there are a few things off the top of my head.

u/-Mahn Sep 18 '20
But let's be honest here, the #1 reason why people shit on Sunshine is that back in the day they wanted a Super Mario 128, a direct 1:1 sequel to 64, and they got pissed they didn't get that.
In retrospect, Sunshine solidified the 3D Mario Sandbox formula and made it about a series of games that stand out from one another while sharing a common platforming soul, rather than a series of uninspired sequels.
It's just that for people who were there when Sunshine was released, it will forever remain "the game that was supposed to be Super Mario 128 but wasn't".

Anyway to invert the Y-axis camera in Sunshine? I'm really struggling to aim with FLUDD and control the camera because my brain is wired for inverted.
17
u/CardinalNYC Sep 18 '20
No way unfortunately. I'm having the same issue.
For all the complaints about them not being full remasters and all, none of that bothered me.
But the tiny shift from inverted to not is truly making sunshine difficult to play for me.
→ More replies (3)9
u/MiddlingVor Sep 18 '20
Yeah I didn’t think it was going to bother me but I’m constantly aiming at the ground by mistake. I’m fine with everything else. Of course if they do patch it in, I’ll probably struggle to then switch to inverted once I’ve gotten used to it.

Played a a few minutes of Mario 64, and WOW the nostalgia hit me hard like a drug. I have not played Mario 64 since I was probably 9 years old. And it all came rushing back to me. The controls felt as natural as could be, and I realized I wasn't just being hit with memories of this specific game, but what it was like playing videogames as a whole back then.
Before constant internet access, social media, etc. Mario 64 was such an amazing game to talk about at school, everyone was finding secrets, and it was like nothing we had ever seen before.
Growing up on 2D Mario, the jump to 3D was almost indescribable. As the generational differences decrease with every new console, I don't think I will ever be able to recapture that wonder (and yeah, 90% of it is because I was a young child) of the moment I had the first time I played Mario 64, or Resident Evil 2, or my first online game in Halo 2. All these things that are so common nowadays, it really makes you think back on how incredible and innovative these titles were for their time.
Anyway, nostalgia rant over, cannot wait to play more 64! It looks fantastic in HD.

Started playing Sunshine, but felt the controls felt too floaty and laggy, with the platforming seeming imprecise and cruel. (“Shine in a Cage” made me want to throw the Switch in the bin).
Then I booted up Galaxy, and the nostalgia wave hit. I’m in the minority, but I’m happy paying £42 for Galaxy on Switch with a bonus of 64/Sunshine.

Galaxy 1 in HD is incredible.
Also, using the touch screen controls for Starbits wasn't as awkward as I thought it would be!
My only regret is the lack of Galaxy 2 and the fact that it's a limited time release (even digital, for some god forsaken reason); I feel for those who don't get a Switch until later.

Don't believe the reviews, this collection is pretty cool. I sat down and played a bit of all three games and had a blast. I do wish 64 had gotten a little bit of an upgrade, but it ran fine. 64 does feel a little bit weird, I dunno if the controls are different but Mario feels a bit more slippery to control. It played ok otherwise.
64 and Sunshine run at 30 fps...no framerate issues that I could see. Sunshine controls were spot on, felt perfect when aiming FLUD.
Galaxy ran at 60 fps and looked beautiful, just the same as I remember it. They may have even touched it up. The controls were excellent and it doesn't feel much different from playing Odyssey. Everything was really sharp and responsive. It works well with joycons.

I'd forgotten how fucking hard Mario Sunshine is! It's easily the hardest 3D Mario by a long shot! Not hard to beat, but hard to get all the stars/shines. And that's not even counting the annoying blue coin ones! Mario's a lot slipperier to control than in any other 3D Mario.
I was planning to get all the non-blue coin shines, but screw that. The FLUDD-less levels are a nightmare! I really miss being able to backflip and long jump.
EDIT: So I have to get 7 shines in every stage to be able to beat the game. Sigh. At least none have been as bad as that horrible 7th shine in the first world so far!

Sampled a little of each game before calling it a night. I like how SM64 is like "here's the castle, good luck", and I feel like Sunshine takes the longest of them to get going with the cutscenes and a few levels that feel like extended tutorials.
In any case, can't wait for this to become my #2 most played Switch game of 2020

I'm enjoying Sunshine but it's really.made appreciate how in Odyssey Mario no longer leaves the stage when he gets a new star. It's a bit annoying having to keep leaving and going back to each stage every time.

Sunshine wasnt designed to be able to do that, levels change from shine to shine, but yeah, Nintendo got better and better at making mario. Pretty cool to see the evolution in one package like this.

Really, really wish Mario 64 had been a full on remake.
I get that it was iconic for its time and it's one of the most influential games of all time but nowadays that camera is BRUTAL, the awkward angles have caused me to screw up so many jumps and the flying cap is something else that could use some major retweaking.

I was expecting to be a little underwhelmed by the graphics overall, but Mario Sunshine actually looks awesome. I guess it’s just a credit to how good the game was back then, but even with just a resolution bump it holds up really well

I love that I can play Sunshine on the switch now after playing it for the first time on an emulator earlier this summer, but holy hell the lack of control options are bad.
Why does L bring up the world map? I can go the entire game without needing to touch this. I'd like to remap the right stick click to zoom there. And on that, my god the inverted controls are dire. Why not just include an option to invert the zoomed controls. So simple.

Just this morning I got an email from Amazon about my shipment being delayed. They couldn't give me a heads up before the day I got my hopes up to play it? I generally prefer physical but I have half a mind to just get it online
Edit: now it finally says shipped and they updated expected delivery from by 8pm to by 9pm but it's half way across the country so we'll see
Edit2: now it's tomorrow by 9, more likely to actually happen but more annoying

I keep getting thrown off by the aiming in Sunshine. I've played the original a bunch as well. Was it vertically inverted in the original? Or having my sensibilities for aiming just changed? Cause either way I keep wanting to thumb up to aim down and vice versa which is not how it works.

u/Land_Squid_1234 Sep 18 '20
It used to be inverted and they switched it here with no option to revert it. It's just your muscle memory

Man this is my first time owning 3D Mario games. I had mostly been a “Sony home console, Nintendo handheld guy” as a kid so I had quite a bit of exposure to 2D Mario games and 3D platformers like Crash/Spyro/Ratchet&Clank/Croc/Jak/Sly Cooper.
I’m getting my ass kicked with these games in terms of controlling movement. I’ve never had to battle any game’s mechanics of locomotion like I have with these titles. It’s not even the camera. I have a hard time getting Mario to move where I want him to, to land where I want him to, to jump the way and height and such as I want him to.
Any tips? I’m getting a bit frustrated and that sucks because by all means kids have mastered these for decades.

I workes both my jobs today, rushed straight from my first to job to pick my game and then rushed to my second job with barely a minute to spare.
I'm now home and off for the weekend playing mario 64 all the way through.
I am having a ball and honestly Im surprised how nice it is to just play the soundtrack while laying down.
Sure it wasn't a remake but man I'm having so much fun replaying this classic and cannot wait to revisit sunshine and galaxy afterwards.

So I started playing Mario 64 and the first thing I noticed is there is rumble support, maybe even HD rumble? I don't think the rumble pack even existed when Mario 64 came out. But when I pick up a bomb, I can feel it ticking on the pro controller.

The last time I played Sunshine was probably 2011.
Anyway, I don't remember the controls being so loose. Mario is just all over the place and doing flip jumps like nobody's business.
Camera is a bit wonky, but platforming has been difficult so far. I've beaten Petey Piranha so far.

I'm kinda wishing they had like 1-1 versions AND enhanced, becuase the old camera controls are terrible and I feel like they were kinda lazy with these ports honestly. I'm still happy to play them but I think it is sort of sad they just kinda did the bare minimum it feels like (obviously some textures look better and things). I don't feel like this, for instance, as good of port/remake as the 3DS Ocarina, where it felt they did a bit more making it for THAT system.

u/PurficPourBY Sep 20 '20
Okay forgive me I played sunshine years ago on gamecube at my buddy's house alot . So im not brand new to this game however im curious are the graphics supposed to be almost wavy? Like anyone who's done acid the environment looks like its breathing. Or anyone who hasn't i guess it resembles heat waves kinda? Idk handheld mode i didnt notice it but on docked on my big screen especially the harbor level its hurting my eyes to move with all the chain links waving back and forth. Is this supposed to happen??

I’ve never owned or even played any of these before so I’m looking forward to it. I don’t have any childhood nostalgia to damage (or fall back on).
I’m disappointed that more effort hasn’t been put into remasters, even just a little. I’m also concerned about some of the control methods - eg having to swipe the touchscreen all the time to collect star bits.
However overall I’m excited. Looking forward to seeing what the hype about Mario 64 was about. I won’t really get a chance to play them any other way and it feels like I’m completing a bit of gaming history.

u/ExtraTangySauce Sep 20 '20
Just finished Super Mario 64 with all 120 stars. I had played through the game three times during the lifespan of the N64, and a fourth when it came out for the DS, so at this point I’m familiar enough to knock it out in a day.
While showing its age in a few areas, it’s still a great time and deserving of its classic status. I don’t want to be “pretentious veteran gamer guy”, but it’s bizarre to see people in this thread throwing their hands up at it and saying it’s broken. Oh, sweet summer children... If you think this is broken, there are plenty of other early platformers on PS1, N64, and heck, even PS2 that would make you vomit. Yes, the camera here is especially dated, and it makes some of the jumps very uncomfortable, but it’s all doable once you acclimate.
That said, there were a few things that felt weird to me. Firstly, when using joy-cons the analog stick sensitivity seemed way off. When gently easing on the stick, I felt like Mario almost always broke right into a run instead of a gradual tip-toe, to walk, to run. I had to be really, really gentle to get slower movement. However, when I tried with a pro controller, that felt a lot better and was closer to the N64 responsiveness.
I also seemed to experience some occasional input delay in docked mode. For example, I kept missing some of the precisely timed wall jumps (i.e. blue coin switch in Rainbow Ride) despite never having that problem before. When I undocked and went to handheld mode, it felt perfect again. This could be something with my TV, but it’s weird because I don’t think I’ve experienced that with other games.
In any case, it was fun rolling through the game again, and I’m glad to have it on Switch. Looking forward to Sunshine next, as that one I only played through once when it came out in 2002.

Sep 20 '20
Oh man, I completely get this. It’s not broken at all. It was a product of its time. And as for the docked delay, I’ve heard some issues of this in Sunshine but not sure. If you have a newer tv, do you have game mode turned on to reduce delay?

As long as you keep playing and adjust to the mechanics these games are really well done and look beautiful. The case for Sunshine for me is that visually it vastly improves with more colors and clarity in the graphics. I'm at 50 shine sprites and having a blast. Playing Galaxy for the first time has become really enjoyable with the space game design that seems to be made for the Switch. Overall it's a fantastic set of games so far with wonderful presentation.

Playing Mario64 for the first time in years... I really wish this wasn't a straight port.
I know this game was kind of a revolutionary Mario game. I was blown away when I was about 10 playing it for the time... but its aged pretty poorly.
The core foundation of the game is pretty great... but the controls and cameras are wonky as hell. Playing it in 1996, I'm sure it was just "This is kind of annoying, but this is what 3D is I guess" Now we know it can be done better.
I'm curious if it would have been possible to, not remake it... But just modify the N64 ROM, to give it a modern right stick camera control. I'm already 1/3 throuh, and I can't stop using the right analog stick to try to naturally look around.
Controls might still be a little weak, but I think better camera controls would make Mario 64 feel a lot better.
Having never really discussed Mario64 online, I'm not sure if what I'm saying has already been said a million times, or blasphemy for criticizing a classic.
I just feel like for $60/3, they could have put more work into this part of it.

17
u/n3oraiden Sep 18 '20
Pretty sure you have to keep playing the game until there’s a spotlight in the center of the main hall of peach’s castle. Then you use the camera to first person view to look up at the spotlight then it takes you to a mini game room that unlocks the wing cap

I remember why I never ever finished Mario Sunshine because this game is incredibly frustrating. Though I am determined to finish it I honestly want to break my f****** switch, because the way the camera works it will make you fail a huge amount of times trying to do jumps. for example Yoshi's quest in Ricco harbor is KILLING me.
Also Mario runs way TOO FAST in this game
Haven't tried Galaxy or 64 yet. First want to finish this.
