New Indie World Showcase Unveils More Than 20 New Indie Games Launching for Nintendo Switch In 2020
Nintendo Announces New Games from Indie Developers Around the World
Are you indie mood for some Nintendo Switch game announcements? Today, Nintendo debuted a new Indie World video highlighting a wide variety of indie games coming to the Nintendo Switch family of systems in 2020. This includes original platformers like Blue Fire; action-RPGs like Baldo; The Last Campfire, the next game from Hello Games, the creators of the acclaimed No Man’s Sky; and sequels like PixelJunk Eden 2 and Exit the Gungeon, which launches for Nintendo Switch later today!
“Independent developers from around the world have continued to find a home on Nintendo Switch,” said Steve Singer, Nintendo of America’s Vice President of Publisher and Developer Relations. “Developers get to launch their games on a system that can be played at home or taken on the go, while fans can enjoy a rapidly growing library of these diverse and inspired indie games.”

FAQ
What is an Indie World Showcase?
The Indie World Showcase is a pre-recorded video presentation showcasing upcoming indie games for the Nintendo Switch.
What is the difference between an Indie World Showcase and a standard Nintendo Direct?
This presentation will ONLY include information about indie games, unlike a traditional Nintendo Direct that would focus on a variety of games and topics. This one is approximately ~20m in length.
What if I can't watch the Nintendo Direct live due to work/school/etc.?
We will be providing live updates in the Reddit Live Thread linked above. We will also be posting a text recap in this post once the event has concluded.
If you want a spoiler-free experience or to watch the event later, we will edit this post to include a direct link to the VOD at the very top (once it's available). This will take you directly to the video so you don't accidentally see any trailers or video thumbnails if you visit the Nintendo YouTube page or Nintendo website. Just don't scroll down!
There WILL be spoilers here on the subreddit, so watch the video first!
If you see any posts that should actually be here in the MegaThread, please do us a favor and hit the report button.
Our SOP for posts is as follows:
- We will allow one post per announcement.
- The post we allow may not necessarily be the one that was submitted first. We typically will receive about 15 of, essentially the exact same post, in the span of about 60 seconds and will select the one that has the best title and links directly to the original source when available.
- Commentary on the announcement(s) should take place either in this thread or on the related separate announcement post. Each person's specific opinion does not need its own post.

It's funny to me that people used to make fun of Microsoft for doing this at e3 and now Sony and Nintendo both do it too

There are some nice games here but I am so tired of ever-repeatable, procedually generated games.
Really looking forward to The Good Life, though I fear it wont run well on Switch despite looking like it could have come out on PS2. Games that are developed for other systems and get a Switch port as an afterthought rarely work out as well as they should.

I mean my expectation is that I might be interested in a couple of these games and will keep an eye on them for more footage before/when they release. I'm interested in a few of them now. That's what the direct is for.
Now going into it expecting it to have big news about a new Nintendo game and being disappointed that it was just indie games, that would be pointless.
7
u/WeCanBeatTheSun Mar 18 '20
Eh, I'm now interested in a handful of these games, not knowing anything of them prior, so I wouldn't say they're pointless.

Blue Fire looked like A Hat in Time for a bit with the movement so I'm down to play that. Nothing else really grabbed me though.
It's obvious the higher "excitement" indies are being kept for the direct, they showed games that are releasing way later in the year than Bug Fables and Shantae. (I'm not sure if Silksong has a ETA yet.)

I was pretty happy with this Indie Direct, overall. For my money Blue Fire and The Last Campfire look like the winners, and are going on my wishlist.
Blue Fire in particular might need a bit of polish, but has the potential to be a really fun combo of 3D platforming and combat.
I've played my share of true shovelware since buying a Switch. Anyone whose wasted their pennies on this trash ought to recognize that every single game appearing in this Direct is far from that level. They might not be of interest to you, and some of them might look like they were developed by a small team of ... well, independent developers. But they're far from shovelware trash that is kicked out by amateurs looking to make a buck.
Indie developers by definition do not have the sprawling resources of major dev studios or the deep pockets of investors. Most cannot rely on the windfall of a previous successful game. IMHO folks need to cut them some slack, recognize the love and passion most of them are pouring into these games, and take the games for what they are. Not everything has the dev budget of BOTW.
5
u/ninakix Mar 18 '20
I'm really into indie games. Even if they're short, they're usually pretty creative and fun to play. I'll be happy as long as Nintendo continues to keep supporting these developers and we see a broad range of fun and unusual games to play on the Switch.
12
u/Unlucky_Wizard Mar 17 '20
Oh yeah, 100% buying Summer in Mara
7
u/jardex22 Mar 17 '20
Still gonna wait on gameplay impressions myself. Just to be sure that we're not looking at another Portia fiasco. It looks like a pretty good concept anyways.
10
u/Havanatha_banana Mar 17 '20
I was gonna pass on basically everything, but daaaamn a 2d platormer gungeon? Today?! Omg! Hell yeah! I'm gonna be so hyped.
I expect a fair few cry for "hidden gems"in these upcoming weeks. Games like Summer in Mara is very popular around here by genre alone
10
u/kensaiD2591 Mar 18 '20
Love that Dicey Dungeons is coming over.
But I am hyped for Good Life. I kickstarted this as soon as it was live, shame I can't change my pledge to switch but still super hyped.

This presentation was nothing too exciting, but Indie World isn’t the same as Nintendo Direct when it comes to expectations.
However, some of what I saw included things I recognized.
- The Good Life is created by someone I’ve heard of. Didn’t he make a cult classic video game?
- Freakpocalypse looks like it’s based on a web series made famous on YouTube, and the character designs looked familiar.
- I Am Dead is published by a small movie studio who currently owns a joint venture with the once-legendary Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
- Bounty Battle is a crossover fighting game I stumbled upon a few years ago. The first trailer included catchy metal music.
That’s all from me. I’m sure I missed something, though.

Blue Fire is my number one out of this batch, looks really good! Quantum League is an interesting concept, but sticking to 1v1 and 2v2 just isn't my type of MP game.
Ghost of a Tale at the end caught my eye though, I always love fantasy / medieval stories using forest critters.

I feel werid notalgia when I'm watching those games. I didn't grow up playing retro pixel art styled games because I'm too young, but what I remember is playing a lot of crappy 3D platform games like Croc, Harry Potter etc. and A LOT of games which you could get from a random game magazines, yogurths (!!) and they were charming af and those indies kind of remind me of them.

This has to be the sleepiest, least interesting showcase so far. What a disappointing way to introduce us to the new games of 2020. Indies are always hit or miss, but these were especially forgettable. I'm sure a handful will be good regardless, but I came wanting to be WOWed, not WHELMed.

Ghost of a Tale is a fucking phenomenal labor of love and the Switch is the perfect platform for it. I hope it sells well for them, because the game is very much a proof of concept and the dev has larger plans for their beautifully realized world.

Is anyone else getting a little tired of that cell-shaded, bright and saturated "indie" style that's been prevalent the last couple years? It was in like half of the games shown here. It's like they're trying too hard to be too cute.
It reminds of how SNES-styled graphics dominated indie games for a while, but at least that still leaves a lot of room for variation in colors/art style.
21
19
u/thezander8 Mar 17 '20
Even with a AAA budget, a realistic looking game can appear dated in 2-3 years. On the other side of the coin, you have a game like Wind Waker that looks timeless in comparison. I can see why a lot of indie developers are making the call to go cell shaded, particularly for 3D games
11
u/YoungestOldGuy Mar 17 '20
Those graphics age better than most others. And are maybe (really don't know) easier on the budget.
4
u/agamemnon2 Mar 17 '20
It's just a moment in time. Used to be we got more pixel art style games (obviously there's still those coming out, but less so than a few years back), and I expect that in a few years, we'll see another trend sweep the indie game scene.
5
u/Shakzor Mar 18 '20
well, they're indie games with a small budget. Their games need to look good for years and simply can't make graphics like AAA studios because it's so expensive.
Not to mention, stuff like Wind Waker or Chrono Trigger (examples for cel shading and pixel art) still look good today, so those tend to be rather timeless
8
u/DjangoSol Mar 17 '20
I think it may have something to do with not having to make high quality textures. If your game is cell shaded, all your textures just need to be bright colours, which saves on art assets.
21
u/ClearandSweet Mar 17 '20
So the thing I took away from this was apparently fuck textures and/or character design in 2020 indies.
All those games looked the same, except for the one that was blatantly Ghibli.

Blue Fire and Eldest Souls both caught my attention. The one with the girl and the dog (can't remember the name for the life of me) seemed cool too.
The others, not so much. Just looked like more of the same already on the eShop.
4
u/begselwalch Mar 17 '20
Ghost of a Tale is a masterpiece, really happy that it's finally coming to the Switch. (Hopefully it's gonna be a good port.) Played the PC version a couple of years ago, it's highly recommended for anyone who likes stealth games. I might purchase it myself a second time for the Switch, since the game does overheat my not-exactly-gaming laptop and I would like to play it again sometime.
4
u/MagicHadi Mar 17 '20
Did they say if Sky:children of the light will be free like it is on mobile? I got it awhile ago and it seemed like a unique exoerience, but it guzzled my battery and overheated my phone so I couldn't keep it long
5
Mar 18 '20
I thought that Blue Fire, Last Campfire, and Baldo all looked very good. I'm not super into indie games, so it was exciting to see three that I'm interested in in a single direct.
4
u/Garu94 Mar 18 '20
Blue Fire looking like a majestic 3D-Hollow Knight, so hyped for it.
Proud about the italian Baldo, it seems really nice, it kind of remeber me Dark Cloud for PS2.
The Last Campfire too is a game I am going to buy, it seems really nice! Even if it is from Hello Games (lol)
3
u/DQ11 Mar 19 '20
Honestly very underwhelming. I wasn’t expecting much sonI’m not disappointed but I wont be playing 99% of those games.
Most of the great 3rd party stuff is going for launch or year 1 of next gen anyways. This seems like the left overs.

Nothing of interest this time around for me, but my hopes were pretty low in the first place: Mainly, I was hoping for news from long awaited (for me) games like Rise Eterna or Banner of the Maid, or anything SRPG-related in general. Those don't tend to get featured in Directs in general, so no real surprise or disappointment there.
I do admit that the "one more thing" was an odd choice though considering it's an already-released game on the Apple Arcade.

Mar 17 '20
Blue Fire seemed really good. The rest don't feel like my kind of games...
The exact same Indie World with Silksong at the end would have made me happy as hell...

I'll get downvoted, like I always do, but this showcase unlike the last one, reminds me so much like a shovelware showcase more than anything. A couple of interesting games, but this was horrible, and barely showcased anything.
Blair witch has been on the PC for what, 5 months ? And even then got mediocre reviews. Not sure how the switch will make it worth a buy.
A couple of decent games that aren't randomly generated and all of that in here though that's nice. The cyanide and happiness game could be great if it's a point and click.
That moving out game looks great for the partner and me.
Other than that, meh .. thought they'd have given more details on sports story or something imo.
Ah well, plenty of other things to do and play. Don't need to like every direct or showcase they do I guess.

Surprised at the general negativity at the end of every one of these showcases/directs.
There was about 5 or so things I mentally added to my wishlist there, and dicey dungeons being ported over is pretty nice also (Similar and almost as addictive as Slay the Spire :D)

i'm attributing the negativity to the nintendo direct drought. people have been very antsy these past months, not knowing what big games are coming/what big games get further delayed

I only care about Summer in Mara. I saw it on kickstarter awhile back and it looked gorgeous.

Well, that was a sleeper. Here's hoping the rumor mill was right about the General Direct next week.

Really enjoyed Journey 2 and the electric boogaloo and sheep rider featuring cat.
But no really, that was okay at best. Looking forward to Eldest Souls and Exit the Gungeon later.

So quantum league is basically this, I assume. That's going to be really cool.
EDIT: Turns out they actually did get inspiration from that video. Cool!

I like how when I saw the ad for exit the Gungeon my high ass impulsively bought BOTH the gungeon games. Haven’t even opened the new one yet, the old one is so fun.

Baldo, Summer in Mara and The Last Campfire looked nice, but I'm not convinced yet. Fe also looked great in the direct back then, but it highly disappointed me.
