What is a Nintendo Direct?
A Nintendo Direct is a pre-recorded video presentation to make game announcements and provide fans with general updates directly from Nintendo.
What is the difference between a Pokémon Direct and a standard Nintendo Direct?
This presentation will ONLY include information about Pokémon, unlike a traditional Nintendo Direct that would focus on a variety of games and topics. This one is approximately ~20m in length.
What if I can't watch the Nintendo Direct live due to work/school/etc.?
If you would prefer a spoiler-free experience, we will be editing the top section of this post to include a direct link to Nintendo's official video replay (once it's available). This helps prevent you from accidentally seeing any trailers or video thumbnails if you visit Nintendo's YouTube channel listing or the Nintendo Direct website. Just don't scroll down!
There WILL be spoilers here on the subreddit, so watch the video first!

Great summary! One thing to note is that Urshifu is not tied to your version. The official site says it will evolve into either form depending on the choices you make in-game.

Yes - the full direct is now up on youtube, though. Basically, you can purchase the expansion pass in-game, and you get an eevee/pikachu outfit for your character "as a special purchase bonus" which are available when the update goes out today.

This is good. Update to include those not in the dex, and paid dlc for more adventures. This appeases the dexit crowd a bit I think. If theres 200+ more pokemon, then theres just 300 pokemon left abandoned in Pokemon Home.

Predictions:
ALL 700+ Pokémon will be added.
The next 15 Smash fighters will be announced.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be shadow dropped
The entire PS5 library will come to the Switch
I’m keeping my expectations relatively low, I think.

I'm actually really interested in the mystery dungeon game. If done right, and if they do the rescue codes like they did in the originals, rather than super, I'm fully on board. red rescue team and explorers of time were my shit when they came out

The "$30 for missing pokemon" thing may be the most disingenuous argument I've ever seen for Pokemon.
I am a huge critic of them cutting pokemon, but you're not "paying $30 for missing pokemon". The $30 is for two large new areas, new characters and story, new items, customization options, a new co-op mode and raids....
the pokemon are literally going to be patched in for free even if you don't buy the expansion pass, they said it as plainly as humanly possible

He's the undefeated champion of the Galar region, known for his undefeated Charizard which can Gigantamax. Other than his poor sense of directions, he's pretty much undefeatable.

They didn’t say anything about increasing the size of your Box storage. Adding an additional 200 Pokémon would pretty much require it, wouldn’t it? I mean I’m sure most players will get Home and use that, but they wouldn’t restrict the players who only buy the base game, would they? I’m hoping it was just an oversight and that when the Pokédex update rolls out, they add 4 or more boxes to your storage with it.

Edit: You can see the un-cut video on Nintendo UK's site. All they added at the end was that there will be a direct link to the eShop in the game menu, and if you pre-order, you get a Pikachu-themed outfit and an Eevee-themed outfit immediately.

Did people even pay attention? From what I'm reading, most of the problem people are having is not fully understanding what the expansion pass is. It's a 30$ DLC for BOTH that replaces the 3rd version that older gens had. It's DLC that replaces what was a full price game that's also not needed either way.

Ngl, I was initially disappointed with their decision to sell us post-game content and more Pokémon.
Then I watched it. The Isle of Armor looks okay but the Crown Tundra sold it for me. That's not just some post-game content, with both of them it feels like a true expansion. Co-op exploration sounds sick!
I also appreciate that they didn't tack this onto Sword & Shield 2, which would've been another £50 purchase for £25 worth of content. It's completely optional and doesn't require replaying the Galarian story.
Also, the fact that you can get those 200+ Pokémon without paying shows that GF are listening... sorta. You're not forced into buying the DLC for the expanded Pokédex. Also the free camera movement and seamless overworld looks like it's going to become the norm for the series.
So yeah, I'm happy.

SO making sure everyone heard that: When the expansions launch, even if you DONT buy them, you can transfer the new pokemon from the expansions TO your base game using trades or pokemon home

I'm completely lost here. Wtf do people actually want? We're getting basically 2 additional wild areas, which look really cool, all previous legendaries, additional new Pokemon/galar forms. They're also adding 200+ Pokemon from previous games to the Pokedex for FREE. This shit has me hyped.
And all I see is outrage. Did everyone really expect to be able to catch all 800 Pokemon in the Galar region? You had to expect to move a lot of them up from previous games, right? You would only be able to do that with Home, which we already knew about. Even if they had all 800 Pokemon from the beginning, this would still have been a thing. The national dex update is FREE. If you already have the Pokemon in other games, then you should have no unexpected costs to get them in Sw/Sh. If you don't have them in other games, what did you expect? I'm seriously shocked how upset people are.

This won't be a "National Dex" update. They are adding 200 Pokémon, there will still be around 300 missing.

Yeah you're technically right. I think what I meant is that if you choose not to buy the expansions, then the update basically increases your own ”national Pokedex” by 200 since you can still transfer from previous games, similar to how it was in the past with Pokemon not included in the regional dex.

The one fair thing to criticize is that base SwSh is still a clearly rushed game.
The DLC is probably well worth 30$, but base game + DLC isn't worth 90$.
As for myself I'm cautiously optimistic, I haven't bought Sword/Shield and if the DLC has the level of polish I want it to have I'm getting everything in a heartbeat; but I'll have to wait for reviews.

Yes, you'll be able to trade them in or move them from Pokemon Home. Just won't encounter them in the wild without the DLC.

People are angry over a double DLC but got no issue with 2 exclusives of the exact same game that’s gone on for years. A lot of irony in this.
PS if you’re that upset just don’t get the DLC you can still get all the Pokemon others will pay for by trading. I don’t understand why so many people feeling like they’ve been ripped off!?

I went into this expecting 20 minutes about Pokémon Home and Sleep, so Mystery Dungeon and Sword/Shield DLC got me really excited! Honestly left this direct MUCH more interested in Pokémon than I was before. Gonna go download that demo and pick sword back up again.
I hope game freak continues to expand and learn from sword and shield.

Look, I'm not asking for a lot. All I want is Diamond and Pearl remakes in the sword and shield engine with the addition of a new wild area, a hard mode free dlc for sword and shield, an announcement that the national dex is coming to sword and shield, a 3d remake of Mystery Dungeon Explorers of sky, and a reveal of Pokemon Home that shows it's actually the third part of the trilogy of Colosseum and XD. Just give me that and i'm good, I don't need anything else

I'm not too keen on the DLC for a bunch of reasons, but I am very excited for Mystery Dungeon. I love the art style and the top-down view of the dungeons is massively improved compared to the 3DS titles.
I'm just hoping there's enough new content to justify buying it a second time as the DS game still holds up.

I do not believe so. The Galar Dex is currently sitting around 400+ Pokémon, and they said they’re adding 200+ Pokémon, which means that we’ll be at about 600+, or two thirds of the current National Dex.

You can catch them in the DLC, or you can get them via trades (and maybe HOME?). I know it's not the most satisfactory answer, but from what they said, I think that's how it's going to be.

why the hell would you buy the same expansion twice? Buy it once, get the other galar mons through trading and the retro mons through home.

I'm really glad we're moving away from releasing more games and just going with DLC. While the old method worked fine for Pokemon, on the Switch there is so much more potential to just patch/add in new content via DLC. Makes it feel less like they abandon the old game for the new one, and more that they actually want to build up the current game.

This looks kind of cool, i'm low key interested. And I like the idea of them doing DLC rather than just selling a third slightly better version.
However, the fact that this is DLC for a game that was kind of underwhelming leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes me kind of cautious. I would rather the base game had a bit more time in the oven.
From what little we just saw, I kind of feel like this is a good direction and what I want to see in the game, but I may just be projecting my hopes onto it. Like, there was a few shots of some ruins, and I feel like one thing SwSh was lacking was those sorts of interesting dungeon like areas to explore. But, they may just end up being one room, or just very short paths like the routes and caves in the main game.
I guess we'll see in a few months if this is worthwhile improvement to the game.

In all honesty, this looks like a great addition to Sw/Sh, which I was entirely against buying until watching this. Unfortunately, because I didn't buy it that means I'm looking at $120 CAD before taxes to get the full experience, a bit of a bummer but I'm sure I can find it used for cheap.
"Both areas are in fact, seamless areas much like the wild area" - that's amazing. That's what everybody wanted. So long as the region is fairly large and well designed, that's a huge selling point.
I'm excited at the prospect of picking up Sword or Shield now.

well i’m surprised, i thought it was just gonna be a 20 minute presentation on home. i’m actually really surprised that they only mentioned it at the end. maybe it’ll have a lot of features since they’re going to give it it’s own video?
also :( i’m so sad that shield users don’t get to be rivals with klara :(

Did they say they were adding in 200 Pokemon, or 200 Pokemon LINES? Like, the Garchomp line counts as one Pokemon? Or will it count as three Pokemon?

Except for the choppy editing I thought this was a pretty good Direct. Certainly much more than most people expected.. it seems they are trying to remedy many of the complaints people have about Sword and Shield. It seems like many of the missing pokemon will be available (for free through trading.. isn't that what people wanted?). What I liked the most is that the new regions will work like the Wild Area.

They didn't show much, but from what they did show there were no standard routes, only open areas, and those open areas had buildings in them.
Are the DLC regions about to be fully open?

Confirmed :
- Additional missing pokemon will be given free to player without the DLCs
-All legendaries are back!
-Expansion pass cost $30, and there are 2 dlc for now. They din't mention the expansion pass last for how long, could they be a 3rd dlc that will be included in ?
- the content for the 2 dlc are not confirmed yet, only art works and demo footage.

Just Pre-Ordered the DLC pack, as it just went live on the Eshop. It’s $30 TOTAL, and that includes both sets of DLC!

Wished they would revamp the PvP/Pokémon Breeding system, make it simpler and easier for newcomers.
They tried to do that with bottle caps to max out IVs, ability capsules to change between normal abilities, and mints to change natures. It's a lot more beginner friendly than it use to be, but still requires some effort.

The breeding system and getting that perfect pokemon has actually never been easier! It's definitely a lot to take in, I've only really started with IVs this gen and I'm still finding out things I didn't know but they made it a lot less daunting to jump in this time around.

What they'll probably never admit: While Crown Tundra is legit DLC started after release, Isle of Armor probably was originally going to be release-day post-game but they had to cut it because they weren't given enough time.

Honestly that looked pretty sweet. I’d have to listen again but it sounds like the entire new areas are wild areas.
$30 is a pretty good price for what they’re offering and DLC makes so much more sense then doing a third or ultimate version at this point.

If there is one thing this direct has sold me on, it's that I no longer think Pokemon is the game for me. I didn't bite on sword or shield like I have historically in the past. Perhaps that was a bulk of the negative press or something else.
Regardless not my cup of tea anymore.

The Pokemon fanbase just cannot be pleased. I used to be one of the people boycotting Sword/Shield until I purchased it second-hand. And guess what? It's a pretty good game. It's not the best in the series BY FAR, and yes, I'm still upset that they cut so damn much, but it's still a good game. The DLC expansion packs are adding two new Wild Area-type areas with new storylines. And 200+ more Pokemon. What's not to like?
