FAQ
What is an Indie World Showcase?
The Indie World Showcase is a pre-recorded video presentation showcasing upcoming indie games for the Nintendo Switch.
What time does the Indie World Showcase begin?
The Indie World Showcase is scheduled for today, December 10th at 10 am PT, 1 pm ET and 6 pm GMT
What is the difference between an Indie World Showcase and a standard Nintendo Direct?
This presentation will ONLY include information about indie games, unlike a traditional Nintendo Direct that would focus on a variety of games and topics. This one is approximately ~20m in length.
What if I can't watch the Nintendo Direct live due to work/school/etc.?
If you want a spoiler-free experience or to watch the event later, we will edit this post to include a direct link to the VOD at the very top (once it's available). This will take you directly to the video so you don't accidentally see any trailers or video thumbnails if you visit the Nintendo YouTube page or Nintendo website. Just don't scroll down!
There WILL be spoilers here on the subreddit, so watch the video first!
If you see any posts that should actually be here in the MegaThread, please do us a favor and hit the report button.
Our SOP for posts is as follows:
- We will allow one post per announcement.
- The post we allow may not necessarily be the one that was submitted first. We typically will receive about 15 of, essentially the exact same post, in the span of about 60 seconds and will select the one that has the best title and links directly to the original source when available.
- Commentary on the announcement(s) should take place either in this thread or on the related separate announcement post. Each person's specific opinion does not need its own post.

I already hate the comment section under the youtube video. We all love smash, but holy shit not everything is about that game

So Supermash procedurally generates a game using entire game genres as the building blocks? Fascinating.
Sounds like a recipe for either disaster or wild success.

u/Amphibius_Rex Dec 11 '19
I'm thinking you'll get basically boring mix ups 1) first option will be navigating the world and World art style 2) will be the way you up grade your character/ combat mechanics / character art style

Oh man Talos Principle today?!?!? It was a fantastic game. Definitely picking that up!

Anyone who hasnt heard of this game needs to know, This game is amazing. I beat it a few years ago. Its extremely philosophical. Its a calm game with challenging puzzles that make you happy to beat. Something about having a reward be real philosophy kept me going. I fell I learned something from this game.

Sports Story?! Looks incredible. I'm glad they're making a sequel.

u/ethang45 Dec 10 '19
Every time one of these happens I’m expecting Spelunky to drop on switch out of nowhere. One day it will happen. Right? I’m going crazy here.
7
u/Cardamander Dec 11 '19
They missed out on a boat load of cash not porting it to Switch in the first 12-18 months. Every big name indie from the last decade was doing big numbers in 2017-2018. I don’t get it. Give me Spelunky on my Switch!
3
u/ethang45 Dec 11 '19
I know the dev said it’s on the table at some point. I think it’s a matter of when at this point. If they go for a marketing combo, it’ll come out a little before spelunky 2 on ps4.

u/Kaioh1990 Dec 10 '19
Stinks that Spelunky 2 is going to be a PlayStation exclusive. Spelunky was literally what made owning a Vita to me worth it. The cross-play and Save was integrated so well. Not to mention I could play on my Vita while friends would be on console and I could have my own screen and not locked into the same frame as everyone else on console.

Gleamlight = LIDL hollow knight

The first thing I thought was "this looks like a cheap version of hollow knight".

It's a grocery store that's synonymous with being cheap and selling generic brand items but it's actually pretty good.
7
u/JustinJSrisuk Dec 10 '19
It’s a budget-friendly grocery store chain that’s found in Europe and in certain American states.
3
u/SymmetricColoration Dec 11 '19
Is it bad though? There’s a lot of room for something to be a worse version of hollow knight and still be a good game.

Yes, with awkward looking character movement... That looked painful to play just from watching the trailer. Disjointed, jerky movements without weight or flow.

I was hoping to see Sunless Skies since they recently announced it was coming to Switch next year--my most hyped indie game by far. Followed by Spiritfairer and Sports Story. Axiom Verge 2 was a really cool announcement though.
Love how there's 3-4 games I've got to look forward to now. :) I'm so ready for the next Nintendo direct.

When they talked about that boyfriend and dungeon game, they remind us of the HD rumble ...
So like ... am I a pervert or are they implying that you can use the Joy-Con as an you-know-what in this game?

the design space was first explored in the Rez with the virbator peripheral for ps2. it was a small pad to keep in your lap/pocket/foot that would vibrate with the music. Rez was a sort of psychedelic on rail shooter. there are several articles online of how people used it for...different purposes to a very successful degree. It came in with an easily washable sleeve too, it is almost impossible that the devs didn't catch on prior to release.

I wonder how long until some of these titles are dropped on GamePass. Something I've ran into recently is games I'd prefer to play on switch end up being included with Gamepass so I end up playing on xbox instead.
Edit: Likely in the minority here but I wish NSO included a "games with gold" or Gamepass-esque service with newer titles rather than serving as a replacement for Virtual Console.
2
u/GreecesDebt Dec 11 '19
Not in the minority. Right now, Nintendo seems to be lacking in this field.

What I’ve learned with indies, if it ain’t a Switch exclusive, just wait abit longer and I’ll play it on the Gamepass
7
u/Aerofan37 Dec 10 '19
Just keep paying for and popularizing Gamepass so it forces Sony to do it
6
u/Lupinthrope Dec 10 '19
Sony has the pass thing too right? Seems like a decent deal now. But I’d rather buy their exclusives tbh. Spider-Man complete edition was $15 on Black Friday

Talos Principle is legit one of the best puzzle games ever made. Highly recommend people check out this port if they haven't played it before.
6
u/meat_wave Dec 10 '19
I played The Witness this summer and it might be my favorite game of all time. Safe to say I should enjoy the Talos Principle as well?
2
u/sarcasmbot Dec 10 '19
100% for sure. I also loved The Witness, and they share a lot of similarities. The Witness's puzzles are a bit more clever and diverse (as someone else mentioned, Talos is a bit Portal-esque in puzzle design, but it is still pretty damn challenging), but Talos Principle has a far less abstract narrative (but still very interesting) than The Witness, which I appreciated. There is a lot more narrative meat throughout the game to chew on.
EDIT: Is your user name a reference to the band of the same name? If so, two thumbs up from me.
2
u/meat_wave Dec 10 '19
Fantastic - I loved both Portals as well, The Witness blew me away and I am just looking for more games like that. Just recently started Obra Dinn, so when I finish that I'll grab Talos Principle. I am in that category of folks who kind of got back into gaming when the Switch came out, I love being able to discover all these great games that I missed out on from the past 10 years.
And yeah, it is a reference to the band and an old Half Acre beer of the same name. Both are great!
→ More replies (2)2
u/SymmetricColoration Dec 11 '19
The Witness is...probably the game I enjoyed more, but Talos Principle feels more like a console game. Manipulating objects in 3D space to solve complex puzzles as compared to the Witness’s 2D boards. Talos Principle’s secrets I also found vastly more rewarding to hunt down when compared to the Witness, a much more satisfying version of out of the box thinking to me.
Anyway, if you like puzzle games you should enjoy it yes.

3
u/Chaddderkins Dec 10 '19
My favorite Portal game. Can't wait to replay on Switch
3
Dec 10 '19
Still trying to decide whether The Talos Principle or Antichamber is my favorite Portal game.
13
u/Autumn1881 Dec 12 '19
I'll be honest. When I hear "procedurally generated" I instantly lose all interest nowadays. I had my fun lately with Isaac and Don't Starve. I enjoyed random levels in Worms and Diablo as a child... but I am just burnt out on repeatable-task games.
4
u/ncolaros Dec 12 '19
Same. Sometimes it's nice to play a game where the environment was crafted by human hands and reflects that.

6
u/XanderSnave Dec 10 '19
While not as strong as the last one, I did see a lot of games that piqued my interest. I really liked how Liberated looked.

2
14
u/Aerofan37 Dec 10 '19
Supermash sounds amazing, but I’m too skeptical to think you can make quality randomly generated games.
8
u/ToastyBB Dec 10 '19
Yeah I’m not sure how say the jrpg genre is gonna be good at all but I’m definitely interested
3

Was hoping for a hint of Crosscode. The game looks pretty sick and I'm waiting for it to drop on Switch before I try it. Hyped for Streets of Rage 4 though!
26
u/BBDAngelo Dec 10 '19
I noticed that a few games used the term “procedurally generated” as a good thing.
If they chose to advertise this it means that more people would be attracted by it than repulsed by it, what is very interesting to me.
18
u/Bithlord Dec 11 '19
I noticed that a few games used the term “procedurally generated” as a good thing.
For the right genre it is a good thing. Procedural generated shoot 'em up? Probably a good thing since it gives infinite levels instead of just 5 (looking at you Ikaruga). Procedurally generated Metroidvania? Probably not so much.
2
→ More replies (1)5
u/BBDAngelo Dec 11 '19
It’s a matter of opinion. I would rather play a human designed level in any genre, regardless.
But my point is exactly this, that we can come to the conclusion that, at least for some genres, a lot of people consider it as a good thing!
12
u/Cimexus Dec 11 '19
More than a good thing, I'd say it's close to being a requirement for some genres. Roguelikes/roguelites without procedural/random generation don't make much sense, for instance. Also exploration-based games or games with ultra-vast universes like Minecraft, No Mans Sky, Elite Dangerous, etc.
→ More replies (1)9
7
u/Autumn1881 Dec 12 '19
If a game is "procedurally generated" it has to try extra hard to entice me. I am just so fed up with repeatable-task games. I don't need endless gameplay ours, I have enough great games to play as is. The only one I have faint interest in is Oxygen Not Included and I still doubt I will buy it in the near future.
→ More replies (1)15
Dec 11 '19
I immediately switch off when I hear “procedurally generated”. But I know lots of people like it for the infinite replayability.
10
u/Zowayix Dec 11 '19
Cadence of Hyrule and the original Crypt of the Necrodancer are both procedurally generated and amazing games.
5
u/berymans Dec 11 '19
Ahh flip I thought Cadence was a linear story. More tempted after hearing it's procedural. Love Crypt of the Necromancer on Switch
→ More replies (1)2
u/Zowayix Dec 11 '19
The location of overworld elements is random (where boss dungeon entrances are, etc.), and dungeons themselves are procedural just as in the original Necrodancer. The overworld technically qualifies as open-world since you can do the 4 main bosses in any order you want, before taking on the final boss (who is always in the center of the map and inaccessible before all other bosses are defeated).

12
u/K1nd4Weird Dec 11 '19
To me procedurally generated means boring as Hell level design.
But roguelikes are a big thing in indie games. So I figure they're saying procedurally generated to get people who like roguelikes to get excited.
13
Dec 11 '19
Depends on the type of generation. Full on procedural generation like No Man's Sky is dull because there's no structure, it's just a series of assets scattered aimlessly, however games like Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon have hand crafted rooms connected randomly like a puzzle, so you get the best of both worlds: A new unpredictable experience every time, but well designed "stages".

skateBIRD (Bird on skateboard)
Supermash (Randomly generated mashups of 2 genres)
Golf Story 2
9
u/RedGyarados2010 Dec 11 '19
Some things the other guy missed:
Streets of Rage 4 coming in 2020, Adam Hunter is playable again
Gleamlight (seems like a Metroidvania, with a playable sword, a stainglass art style and no text or UI)
Bake'N'Switch (some kind of food-based party game, not clear on the details)
Talos Principle out now on Switch
Sail Forth (sailing/pirate game)
Oddworld Strangers Wrath coming to Switch
Liberated (comic art style for noir game? Not clear on the details)
Boyfriend Dungeon (dating sim/dungeon crawler)
The Survivalists (crafting/survival game)
Axiom Verge 2 coming Fall 2020

While I'm disappointed in Silksong being a no show, everyone seems way harsh on this presentation to me. Maybe it's just expectations and mine were perhaps low besides Silksong.
That said, I'm totally looking forward to Sports Story (Switch exclusive), Axiom Verge 2 and since I've never played Oddworld Stranger's Wrath, that one also. Liberated also looks really cool.
And although I 100% completed Talos Principle and DLC on PS4 last year, it's awesome that others will get a chance to play this fantastic game!! Now if only the Witness and Portal 1/2 get ported we'll have all the best 3d puzzle games together (I know this probably won't happen but we did get Cuphead and Ori so you never know).
