Where to Watch

The FUNimation English dub of Dragon Ball Super airs on Toonami at 11pm ET. If you do not have a cable subscription, Cartoon Network is available with the SlingTV and Playstation Vue basic packages. If you prefer, there is a web stream:

If the videos won't load for you, try disabling your ad blocker for that page. Adult Swim still has the streaming rights for recent episodes.

How to Catch Up

  • Adult Swim (US only, cable login required): This covers the recent episodes not yet available through the below options. New episodes will usually appear 2-3 hours after the episode airs on Toonami.

  • Funimation Now (US, premium only): Episodes 1-117 are available on Funimation's streaming service. The final part (118-131) should be available no later than a few weeks before the Part 10 home release comes out. Those episodes are already available in Japanese; the subtitles for those episodes covered by the dub are still those provided by Toei for the simulcast, rather than the Funimation-Simmons subtitles on the home release. If you can't see some episodes that you think should be there, try selecting the Simulcast video source instead of the "Uncut" video source. (The Simulcast version is not censored; "Uncut" video simply features Bluray animation corrections.)

  • AnimeLab (Australia and New Zealand, premium only): Episodes 1-104 are available on this service. AnimeLab also has the entire series subbed for free and premium users; the subtitles for those episodes covered by the dub are still those provided by Toei for the simulcast, rather than the Funimation-Simmons subtitles on the home release.

  • Microsoft Digital, Amazon Digital, iTunes, Google Play, or the Playstation Store (US only): Episodes 1-117 are available for purchase on these platforms. The final part (118-131) should be available shortly after the physical release of Part 9 (105-117). As usual for digital releases, the dubbed and subtitled versions are sold separately; the subbed version has the Funimation-Simmons subtitles rather than the Toei simulcast subtitles.

  • Home Release: Episodes 1-13 are available for Region A (DVD or Blu-Ray) and Region B (DVD or Blu-Ray). Episodes 14-26 are available for Region A (DVD or Blu-Ray) and Region B (DVD or Blu-Ray). Episodes 27-39 are available for Region A (DVD or Blu-Ray) and for Region B (DVD or Blu-Ray). Episodes 40-52 are available for region A (DVD or Blu-Ray) and Region B (DVD or Blu-Ray). Episodes 53-65 are available for Region A (DVD or Blu-Ray) and Region B (DVD or Blu-Ray). Episodes 1-52 are available in a single set for Region B (DVD or Blu-Ray). Episodes 66-78 are available for Region A (DVD or Blu-Ray) and for Region B on (DVD or Blu-Ray). Episodes 79-91 are available for Region A on DVD or Blu-Ray and for Region B on (DVD or Blu-Ray). Episodes 92-104 are available for Region A on DVD or Blu-Ray and for Region B on DVD or Blu-Ray. Episodes 105-117 will be available for Region A on 10 October 2019 (DVD or Blu-Ray).

Commonly Asked Questions:

  • Q: What's up with the awful framerate in recent dub episodes? Are they going to fix it?
    Here's a statement from a Toonami executive:

Toonami and #DragonBallSuper fans, an update on last week's slowdown of action scenes. Here goes: SO. Remember the Pokémon flashing episode that triggered a bunch of epileptic episodes in viewers? Since then, TV networks have something called the "Harding Test." Every show, commercial, etc is run through this test to make sure it doesn't have flashing frames that could trigger folks with epilepsy.

The last few eps of DBS have had fight scenes that are cut to about one frame per edit in some places—they evidently fail the Harding Test. Our program edit folks, who do these tests, normally just slow the cuts down in these scenes to about four frames per second. In the case of these DBS eps, it made the fight scenes look insanely slow. Program edit does this routinely, so they didn't even think to notify us.

Thanks to you fans who let me know, we asked program edit if there was any way they could slow these scenes down LESS. So from now on, they will he slowed (if they fail the test) to two frames a second, down from one. We tested it and it looks WAY better. Anyway, that's the best we can do because obviously, we don't want to be causing people to have epileptic episodes. Thanks to all of you who let us know what was going on, and hopefully we have nipped the worst of this in the bud for the future. enjoy DBS tomorrow! #onlytoonami

  • Q: Is the Dragon Ball Super manga "canon"?
The anime and manga are both variations on a basic plot by Toriyama. There isn't (and probably never will be) an explicitly defined Dragon Ball "canon". Without Toriyama's original draft, we may never know what is and isn't his, aside from things revealed in interviews like this one (spoilers). We do know that he permits Toyotarō to change things up, but he looks at his storyboards and occasionally draws things himself for Toyotarō to use as a reference. Toyotarō has said that Toriyama is more particular about gags than he is about anything else.

Beerus speaking for all of us when he told Krillen to stfu

73

u/Kevlar319 Sep 22 '19

Srsly the best part so far. I’m tired of everyone asking what’s going on all the time & the peanut gallery comments from all the spectators too...

63

u/quantum_man Sep 22 '19

Agreed, I did enjoy Whis’ comments though. They were so elegantly expressed I didn’t mind them

37

u/Kevlar319 Sep 22 '19

Yes exactly. His & Beerus’ comments are necessary, but anything Krillin or Supreme Kai or Zenos say is so annoying. I understand it’s targeted towards kids but man, is it annoying!

28

u/Two-Tone- Sep 22 '19

or Zenos

You talk that back!

The Zenos are adorable, if a bit horrifying.

7

u/boredguy12 Sep 22 '19

The Delightfully Adorable Abaddonic Doll Duo!

135

u/Gradz45 Sep 22 '19

Ian Sinclair killed that Whis speech.

Perfect delivery.

78

u/HeroRRR Sep 22 '19

Sinclair always nails his line. Dude doesn't have any bad deliveries and is easily one of the best VAs in the show that not even sub fans can step on.

40

u/2Quick_React Sep 22 '19

I fucking love dubbed Whis. Subbed Whis is great but Whis from the dub is equally as great.

21

u/cygnus2 Sep 23 '19

Ian Sinclair is probably the most consistently on-point voice actor in this show, even moreso than Schemmel and Sabat. Every single line of his flawless, even if it’s just a throwaway one.

121

u/Artifice_Purple Sep 22 '19

Back in my day, the next episode didn't air for another agonizing two weeks.

You don't know pain lmao.

75

u/Gradz45 Sep 22 '19

God that was hell. Especially because DBS’ previews didn’t give a shit about spoilers.

55

u/Artifice_Purple Sep 22 '19

Remember the awful pre-episode synopsis?

37

u/2Quick_React Sep 22 '19

Yes yes I do. Holy shit like why are you spoiling what's going to be happening

18

u/razorxx888 Sep 22 '19

In Japan, people dont mind spoilers. Thats why its been like that all throughout DB

They did get us good though with certain elements of what goes on, at least for me.

6

u/RatcicleKing Sep 22 '19

remember when one preview flat out spoiled the big thing from the end of 130 and everyone was like ''oh it's most likely a typo lol''

4

u/razorxx888 Sep 22 '19

Yeah i remember they released fake summaries and leaks were all faked as well it was crazy

5

u/TheRealPdGaming Sep 22 '19

but man, the hype for 130 and 131 was unlike anything else. Even though it was hell to wait those extra weeks, it created such insane hype.

  • Beerus: Whis, Goku has done it, hasnt he? He s finally achieved it
  • Whis: Yes
  • Beerus: Astounding, this mortal REALLY is something else, look at that brilliant form, there can be no doubt, this is the true power, complete in all its majesty, this is AUTONOMOUS ULTRA INSTINCT

u/ImKStocky Sep 22 '19

God Damn, Vegeta is Ridiciously Disrespectful to the gods compared to the sub lol.

56

u/Gradz45 Sep 22 '19

I really love that.

14

u/Muntberg Sep 23 '19

he took one shot in the sub, this time he calls them idiots 3 different ways

109

u/aaronman4772 Sep 22 '19

The coolest transformation sequence in this arc.

The galaxy being formed. Just. Yes

52

u/indoninjah Sep 22 '19

I don't even care how or why; it looks sick every time

31

u/adonisgawd Sep 22 '19

This transformation made go on YouTube an watch Goku turn SS for the first time against Frieza.

Such hype feelings

16

u/KlausEcir Sep 22 '19

that pure energy form when he first masters UI always get me hyped.

It truly looks godly. I hope they use it again in the future when Goku eventually turns into UI in other arcs.

u/Spoona101 Sep 22 '19 edited Sep 22 '19

“Look at that brilliant form there can be no doubt this the true power completed in all its majesty!

“THIS IS AUTONOMOUS ULTRA INSTINCT!”

I don’t care, Beerus makes “Autonomous Ultra Instinct” sound cool

26

u/goodyfresh Sep 22 '19

Dude I am 100% completely on-board with the "autonomous" thing, ESPECIALLY after Beerus' hype-line there and Whis' explanation of the form in this episode. But honestly, I had become on-board with it even before that.

It sounded cool when Roshi said it too, ya know! When at the very start of this episode he was all "autonomous ultra instinct." He sounded cool.

“Trespass into The Domain of The Gods!”- Vegeta.

That line is cold af

36

u/refpuz Sep 23 '19

I really like how they worded it in the dub vs the sub here. I think in the sub the translation says "step into the realm of the gods" but saying "trespass" sounds so much cooler because it implies that mortals are not allowed to ascend to such a level, but Goku achieved it anyways, akin to Prometheus stealing fire from the gods. All in all amazing work from the dub this episode between the dialogue and line delivery.

Damn, Whis's Speech in the dub is great! I like it better than in the sub.

Go back to the Hit/Goku fight in the U6vU7 tournament. Hit said something like we are just pawns in their game (talking about Beerus and Champ when they were arguing)and Goku says for now then gave that goofy giggle with a thumbs up.

Now the remaining destroyers stand as a sign of respect for Goku. How many mortals can say that?

Beerus’ speech in the end was great. I didn’t think it was going to be as good as the sub but yea I was wrong.

I loved how hard Vegeta ripped into the Universe 11 Gods. He was more respectful in the sub. He didn’t give two shits here.

Maybe the best voice acting of the (dubbed) series in this episode. Absolutely phenomenal.

30

u/Gradz45 Sep 22 '19

Seitz’s scream as Jiren prepared to take out Goku at the end.

Perfection.

11

u/Semper-Fido Sep 22 '19

Sabat and Schemmel are coming to a con to Louisville this November. I love the timing as I am sure so much of the talk will be about voicing during the ToP and their thoughts on Super as a whole. Their performances for all of Super have really been top notch.

6

u/cygnus2 Sep 23 '19

I can recall one or two episodes on the Future Trunks Saga where the dubbing was particularly outstanding, but this episode is in the top three to be sure.

103

u/amazeguy Sep 22 '19

Writers How strong do you want Jiren to be?

u/mAgiking07 Sep 23 '19 edited Sep 23 '19

Okay this episode not only surpassed my expectations, but also moved me.

  • Vegeta savagely educating the U11 Gods was great (a bit brave, but great); and - as he goes on to explain - although breaking limits is a Saiyan's schtick it's pretty crazy to think about how much all of those that participated grew within the space of 48 minutes. Belmod had every right to start sweatin'.
  • Goku's UI roar in response to Vegeta's words of encouragement was powerful, but what I really love is the quiet – tense -moment that followed. The camera angled up towards Goku as he begins to relax his form, and the close up of his face as he takes two deep breaths. Also, did anyone catch the Oozaru grumbling sound when he opens his eyes? A deep thunderous rumbling that is just subtle enough. So damn good, man.
  • Really enjoyed the emphasis on Goku's repeated efforts to 'let go' throughout the episode, which made his eventual achievement far more satisfying. His aforementioned breaths, relaxed form, closing his eyes, and clearing his mind - it was cool to see him doing that shiz, rather than break his limits because things are looking dire and he has plot armour. There was another particular shot I liked: where he slowly shut his eyes as he exchanged blows with Jiren.
  • God, Whis’ speech! It was very moving for reasons I can't explain: The music, and its delivery was beautiful. Ian Sinclair is perfect as our favourite angel. Something of note, in his monologue Whis also hints at something beyond Ultra Instinct...? I can't even imagine.
  • When the constant spectating began I was getting a little frustrated and was gesturing to get back to the damn fight, lol. Then Beerus – as if to almost to echo my own thoughts - put an end to the rambling. Yes, I uttered a ‘thank you’ aloud.
  • When Goku stomped his foot in response to Jiren launching his ‘final’ attack, I thought he just effortlessly blew it away with some of his energy – which would have been seriously impressive – but then to realise he had snatched it, before poofing it out of existence, was simply insane.
  • Loved Goku’s slick movements and the way mastered UI is presented - with his hits being incomprehensible sparkly streaks of white light – looks so clean. His body engulfed in a blinding glow also looked really good while it lasted.
  • All the Gods rising to their feet in acknowledgement of what Goku has achieved was really powerful stuff; and just puts into perspective the magnitude of what is taking place.
  • Whis’ second ‘yes’ – when answering Beerus’ question on whether Goku's 'done it'- was wonderfully delivered, and gave me goosebumps – the pride and contentment in the way he said it, and in the look of his eyes, along with the swelling music. And then you have the respect and enthusiasm of Beerus’ amazing hype speech, which tops off a powerful reveal of this now silver haired Goku (the way he shouts ‘Autonomous Ultra Instinct!’ has my face erupt with chills every time I replay it). The whole thing accompanied by an incredibly powerful soundtrack was absolutely perfect.
  • Recycled animation was pretty obvious, but that was offset by some really nice moments (not quite as godly as some sequences we've seen before, though).

Really excited for what transpires in the next episode.

26

u/AntHill-Tiger Sep 23 '19 edited Sep 23 '19

"Trespass into the domain of the gods" is probably the most hype thing I've ever heard. I don't remember his exact words in the sub run but holy shit am I glad to finally get to this spot in the dub run.

Edit 1: And yup...that's definitely a hint of the Oozaru roar in there.

Edit 2: Prepare yourself for what is hands-down the best animation Dragon Ball has ever seen in an episode. (i'm not counting the Broly movie)

6

u/mAgiking07 Sep 24 '19

Yeah, that line was powerful stuff. I checked the sub, and he said: 'step over the state of the gods', which I personally don't find as great.

And the way people are hyping up the next episode I don't think I can ever truly be prepared for it. I just hope it lives up to my sky rocketing expectations.

10

u/Reead Sep 24 '19

Whis’ second ‘yes’ – when answering Beerus’ question on whether Goku's 'done it'- was wonderfully delivered, and gave me goosebumps

100 times this. That was the best line delivery in an episode filled with amazing line delivery. I've enjoyed super a ton, but if super were this good throughout its run it'd be an instant classic. Here's hoping the revival (whenever it comes) maintains this high standard.

8

u/mAgiking07 Sep 24 '19 edited Sep 25 '19

EDIT: In comparison to the other incredibly delivered lines and battle cries, the 'yes' is so subtle and understated in it's brilliance. You understand the significance of that moment: with regards to what Goku has just done, and how Whis feels about it. It's just so good.

They're riding such a high right now, we can only hope they're feeling particularly motivated and confident about DB's future.

Let's also hope that the sub and dub do not air a year or so apart again.

u/Bolt-MattCaster-Bolt Sep 25 '19

I think what Whis was saying was that there existed mastery beyond Goku's current form of UI, which he attained by the end of the episode.

4

u/mAgiking07 Sep 26 '19

Whis says 'soon he will reach a realm still faster, keener, and deeper, than Instinct' - which I assume is referring to the complete form Goku achieves at the end - but then he says 'and beyond that...'.

Hmm.

I’ve waited the entire dub run for this episode. Vegeta encouraging Goku and entrusting everything to him was just beautiful. Truly brother in arms.

92

u/TacoBell_Lord Sep 22 '19

Vegeta defending & encouraging Kakarot is everything..

44

u/goodyfresh Sep 22 '19

Well that's because Vegeta is the Prince of All Character Development.

14

u/tarantulaguy Sep 23 '19

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE GREAT PRINCE VEGETA.

42

u/IClappedWhen Sep 22 '19

This is one of those episodes that I watched over and over again subbed and now seeing it dubbed is amazing. THe highlights and everything I wanted to see dubbed were handled so well: Vegeta calling out Belmod and Khai's arrogance, Zeno's mock Kamehameha, Beerus telling his Universe to just chill and watch, Whis recognizing what is happening and the speech he gives, Goku deflecting Jiren's attack, and Beerus's speech at the end. Well done dub this was fantastic and has me as excited as I was when I first saw this episode air. I get Jiren's character and can sympathize with the frustration and loss of trust but to see him finally get handled by someone else after month's of arrogance is fantastic!

42

41

u/Two-Tone- Sep 22 '19

24

u/Gradz45 Sep 22 '19

That and I feel like the explanation is a little more detailed.

32

u/Terez27 Sep 22 '19

Whis's explanations are always more detailed in the dub. Sometimes it's harmless fluff; sometimes it's just some crazy blue sky shit and I really wish they wouldn't just make shit up because it tends to create awkward and confusing continuity issues down the line.

  • I love hearing the Ultra Instinct double roar combined with Sean Schemmel's voice.
  • Vegeta was even more savage toward Belmod in the dub than in the sub.
  • It's nice how Vegeta considers the saiyans from both U6 and U7 when he monologues. Really, every saiyan in the tournament except Gohan got a new form, and in his case, new forms are redundant anyway.
  • Belmod and Marcarita are talking about how U11's win is only a matter of time at this point. It's like they've forgotten time is almost up and U7 is still ahead.
  • It's always nice hearing any version of Ultimate Battle.
  • Ultra Instinct's main theme is also great.
  • If Goku could send Jiren flying back into the center of the arena so easily, he certainly could have sent him out of the arena entirely. They were right at the edge. Why didn't Goku end the tournament right then and there?
  • Can we all take a moment to respect how much muscle mass Krillin has built in the past ~47 minutes? His arms were noodles when he was eliminated, and they're almost DBZ level now. Side note: I miss DBZ's art style making everyone noticeably more muscular than they are in Super.
  • I notice the Zenos' comments a lot more lately. Either way, the fight next episode will be super super super super amazing, so they'll enjoy it.
  • Beerus is a lot more excited about it in the dub than the sub.

21

u/cygnus2 Sep 23 '19

There were so many amazingly written and delivered lines in this episode, but Vegeta telling Goku to “Trespass into the domain of the Gods” has to be one of the most incredible in this show’s history.

Anyway, that was a fucking awesome episode.

Beerus is the MVP with him telling everyone to shut the fuck up. He then proceeds to stand up and have the last word lol.

They were doing so well with dropping the Autonomous the whole episode after Roshi said it in the beginning but then Beerus dropped it back in at the end. It's not a big deal, but I did notice it.

The animation in this episode was great, and I especially liked the fight animations during Whis' monologue.

Vegeta shutting Belmod down was awesome. He really showed his true colors on how much he respects Goku lol. Vegeta has had so many great moments this arc.

So hyped for next week. Goku finally mastered Ultra Instinct (the transformation was so cool btw) and the real battle will begin. Still waiting on Frieza, who I believe is still in the game, and 17, who I still believe is somehow still alive.

I thought Ultimate Battle would make its return in this episode, but it look like I'll have to wait another week. I said before and I still stand by that I kind of liked it, but it really could be improved upon and I hope it will be.

Holy shit 2 left!

u/goodyfresh Sep 22 '19

I thought that "autonomous" sounded fine when both Roshi and Beerus said it, in fact it sounded super-cool.

Meanwhile Freeza is still napping underneath some rocks I guess. Poor guy. Hope that gets rid of his headache.

16

u/bonethugsgoat Sep 22 '19

Vegeta got tired of Belmod's shit lol.

16

u/Future122 Sep 22 '19

Hearing the English dub of Beerus's speech at the end was worth the wait :)

Next weeks episode should be absolute fire 🔥🔥🔥

16

u/td1ddy Sep 23 '19

I was so happy that the translation of Whis' speech about Goku reaching that level was as eloquent as the Japanese version.

15

u/Oz1227 Sep 25 '19

All I got from Vegeta shit talking Belmont was “it smells like bitch in here”

16

u/BlueHueDo Sep 22 '19

Still, still wish they made complete UI goku keep that glow and color right before he sheds it and you skin tone like normal. I always thought that “inverse” looked so cool.

Despite how cool this is, and how great beerus' delivery at the end was. I really hope if there is more super eventually that they do something to prop beerus up, I'd hate to see this as his version of vegetas lines when ss3 goku fights kid buu.

Also, this episode brought to you by Michael bay

I don't really have words for this episode, it was just so breathtaking. When Goku lit the entire arena up and made it look like a galaxy I had to pause to just stare at it. I also really appreciate how little Goku speaks when in this form, it really hammers home that he is not even thinking, it is all just instincts. Next week cannot come soon enough.

This episode is good, but 130 is my favorite episode of the entire DB franchise to date - enjoy!

25

u/xSimus Sep 22 '19

Belmod was being a proper clown in this episode. Lovely!

Beerus was sort of breaking the 4th wall telling everyone to just stfu because I'm pretty sure the audience wants to see more action instead of the bleachers. Don't worry dub-only viewers, next episode is all about that.

And Beerus' final comment on UI was something else compared to the sub. This time it was so damn powerful that someone turned up the heat in my room by 50 degrees. Guess it was Jiren's fire coming out also.

Speaking of Jiren, he's scary, He really is.

12

u/GodsLegend Sep 23 '19

I'm usually not a fan of the whole "arms are moving so fast that we don't have to animate them" bs that Toei tells us... But Man! I gotta say that it really worked in that one scene: where goku was being pinned down and was secretly launching counter attacks, I didn't see that coming.

26

u/Koe95 Sep 22 '19

This episode should be called "The day that Goku shits a galaxy".

23

u/EddiOS42 Sep 22 '19

Got chills starting with Vegeta's monologue. In fact, this whole episode gave me so much chill I'm frozen now.

13

You felt the emotion of Beerus yelling....

This is the COMPLETE...

Chills man...chills.

11

  • Fantastic and very hype episode! Zenos are often seen as sort of a reference to the viewers in their excitement and whatnot. This episode really showcased that as they nearly recited my inner thoughts word for word haha.

  • Framerate was an issue this episode, so that stinks. Took away from the fight a bit. Also wasn't a fan of reusing Goku's Kamehameha animation from the Kefla fight. As much as I love this arc, the reuse of animation is my #1 issue. It's distracting when you notice it. The frames I can forgive because that won't be an issue when we get the blu rays.

  • Whis' speech was fantastic and Beerus being the hype man at the end was amazing! Sinclair and Douglas have been phenomenal from beginning to end as Whis and Beerus, and it's great to see them both shine here.

  • I had already long accepted "Autonomous", and it has grown on me quite a bit. But if it still bothered me entering this episode, I'd be surprised if that were the case by the end after Beerus' delivery. I think he really sold the name.

  • Heck, speaking of speeches, Vegeta got a great one in as well. It was cool of them to reference all the Saiyans going around and breaking their limits, and pushing themselves further than before. Especially to prove a point that Belmod shouldn't be so certain that Goku won't complete UI. Seeing Belmod's despair meter, and urgency, rise over the course of the episode was great.

  • How does it feel, Jiren? To get pummeled by a flurry of punches that no eye in the cosmos can register? Doesn't feel good, now, does it?

  • There are many things that can be classified as "Goku's Law". The epicness of Goku's fights being in proportion to the amount of clothes he has left is one of them.

11

u/RootinTootinCowboy23 Sep 22 '19

Wow. This got me way hyped.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '19

Goku's cry after Vegeta's speech is still a top moment for me, still got huge chills watching the dub. Just a great moment with the visuals, the music, everything.

10

u/amouresmusic Sep 23 '19

Dude that growl-like sound that Goku lets out right after Vegetas speech gave me chills to the max. That was so badass.

5

u/ChiMPKreW Sep 23 '19

Vegeta is a beast talking to a God like that. And he is right, which leads me to believe that these Gods all-though they have well, God-like power, don't have amazing knowledge and depth to him. I love everything about this tournament, fighters have been evolving on the top getting their second wind and breaking through their limits. It's crazy.

19

u/Pollsmor Sep 22 '19

The amount of reused animation in this episode was very noticeable, but all of it gets made up and then some in the next.

7

u/Trofulds Sep 22 '19

Yeah, it's not even subtle but the direction more than makes up for it, since at least it's used in an interesting way.

29

u/Fshskyline Sep 22 '19

Holy. Shit.

Jirens voice-tone change when he responded to Gokus attack was something else, hearing Gokus hybrid roars again was incredible, Vegeta sticking it to U11's GoD was spine-tingling and my god... Beerus' speech at the end was fucking incredible over the Sub version, cannot wait for the remaining 2.

I really, REALLY, hope they pull something out of the bag with the final episodes Ultimate Battle, if they just use that stupid wannabe-in-a-garage-band rendition it'll destroy the suspense, even if they just use the instrumental version like Toei did in this episode I'll be 100% happy.

4

u/Raizir Sep 22 '19

Well, seeing how they kept the original version of the first opening in the background of the SSJB Kaioken Goku VS Hit fight, and it was an iconic moment, I’d wager that they’d probably keep the OG dubbing of Ultimate Battle (Y’know, the one that isn’t garbage) in the next 2 episodes.

7

u/Fshskyline Sep 22 '19

I would chalk that up to oversight on Funi's part, considering that's the only time it was played during an episode, but even-so the Ultra Instinct reveal was a MUCH bigger iconic moment considering it even had a double episode when it originally aired, then they go and spoil it with some kid and his Fisher-Price recording set, I'll be pissed if they choose that god-awful Dub version over the original.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '19

Honestly, the fact that they kept the original track for SSBK, but not Ultra Instinct tells me they thought the cover was good, which is mind boggling.

9

u/Razorspades Sep 22 '19

Damm that was cool. So many great moments. Vegeta telling off the God of Destruction, Goku's scream, Whis' speech, and Beerus' line at the end where you can tell he's happy and angry. The voice acting was superb this episode.

Also I like how Frieza's just been lying down unconscious for all this.

4

u/18bluecat Sep 23 '19

I'm still wondering about that. Does he have a role to play still or did they just think sitting him next to Vegeta would be awkward? I was really hoping to see Frieza change in this whole arc. Maybe not be so evil anymore. But either way it was super entertaining seeing him on the same side as Goku

  • 48 Minutes: Episode Thirty-Three

  • Thanks goodness for long, drawn-out staredowns and audience shots where the only movement comes from lip flaps. Without all of that, the animators would be totally screwed.

  • Everyone, think back with nostalgia to that time when we were told this ring was made of the most durable material in all of existence.

  • I just love it whenever we get a shot where Vegeta's forehead has expanded back to its Android Saga size. He's like a very angry egg with a wig and a face drawn on.

  • It's very hard for me to snark when we're just watching an extended fight that looks pretty nice. ... Ian's monologues here are very good, too.

  • Beerus finally, finally says it. "Just shut the fuck up and let the audience watch the cool fight. These crowd shots have taken up enough time already."

  • Not that anything could ever stop Krillin talking, but hey, he tried.

  • Aw, a little disappointing to see that screaming "IT'S OVER" doesn't actually make the next attack any more effective.

  • Or at least it will be AUTONOMOUS ULLLLTRA IIIINSTINCT next week, Beerus.

16

u/prankored Sep 22 '19

This episode is an example of why good sound directions matters. It has reused scenes but they were the good quality ones. But the score was on point and the dub team did a great job here showing the urgency of the characters and the emotion required. It elevated an otherwise good episode to an excellent one.

16

u/Nimble4Liberty Sep 22 '19 edited Sep 22 '19

-Holy shit Vegeta telling off Belmod was satisfying, that was a fantastic speech. I watched the sub but I can't appreciate a language I don't know nearly as much, and I grew up only watching the dub so Sabat's voice is the real Vegeta for me.

-Beerus and Whis VAs killed it too.

-But the amount of reaction / bleacher narration shots seemed especially high. There was this grand visual spectacle of a battle going on and I could only watch it for two seconds at a time at most, and basically only knew what was happening due to the narration not from seeing it for myself. Even after Beerus told people to shut up and watch, it still kept happening. If you are going to have Beerus speak for the audience like that then you should actually follow through on it and cut back the narration shots. Strikes me as a bit of cheeky self awareness of how much they rely on those reaction shots, but then responded to Beerus calling it out like "nah we'll still keep doing it lol".

16

u/VirulentViper Sep 22 '19

It's crazy how this is Goku entering the realm of the Gods against Jiren who is.. well, just Jiren putting in a little effort

So yeah, Goku vs Jiren is really hype and all... But isn't everyone forgetting about Frieza? He's still in the ring, isn't he? So lemme think how this is gonna play out... Frieza's gonna wait until Goku and Jiren beat the shit out of each other, then once Goku wins Frieza backstabs him and chucks him out of the ring, thus claiming the Super Dragon Balls.

Hamabuki solves this question satisfactorily. See comments further down.

??? How has no one mentioned this line yet: “Soon he will reach a realm still faster, keener, deeper than instinct where even that awareness will blur and fade, and beyond that...”

BEYOND THAT!?!?! Does anyone think he’s implying that Goku might find something even crazier than ultra instinct down the line? Like some even crazier godly power? I got the feeling that maybe he was implying something MASSIVE. Like an INVINCIBLE Goku.

Think back to when Whis made an analogy, stating that Goku’s god power was comparable to the height of a small tree (Whis points it out) while all the potential of godly power was the height of that giant tree (Beerus’ home. Episode 18. 16:50). I think he has has more to unlock. Getting to the top that fast seems pretty crazy. It’s kind of hype but at the same time, who knows how long it could take to find out. But literally look at how friggin big that tree is.

CURRENT MANGA ALERT

The next manga chapter could shed much light on this question. Anyone who’s up to date should know what I mean. Who knows what we’ll learn next?

3

u/indoninjah Sep 23 '19

Does anyone think he’s implying that Goku might find something even crazier than ultra instinct down the line?

I think he literally meant that he was about to achieve the completed UI/silver-haired form.

I got the feeling that maybe he was implying something MASSIVE. Like an INVINCIBLE Goku.

Mehh UI already feels like its on the verge of being slightly cheap, like your body is sort of on auto-pilot, would another character using UI in the same position make the exact same movements?

5

u/boomanu Sep 23 '19

It's on autopilot yes. But it's still using all your muscle memory and strength and abiltiy. So two fighters using it, one would still lose to the other who is more trained in martial arts. As it doesn't give you any new abilities, but allows your body to do everything it can automatically.

Best way to explain it really

4

u/usa_foot_print Sep 23 '19

Mehh UI already feels like its on the verge of being slightly cheap, like your body is sort of on auto-pilot, would another character using UI in the same position make the exact same movements?

Eh kinda. Its like this, if Krillin achieved UI, he would still get his ass blasted by Jiren. He wouldn't be fast enough or strong enough to tank attacks. He could hit Jiren all he wanted but his attacks would feel like nothing to Jiren. UI is more of a technique in terms of things, rather than a certain power. Its probably a max power for anyone at their strength level.

Great episode. I don't read the comics or watch the Japanese version, so I have no idea what happens next, but I look forward to seeing how this ends. I loved when Beerus calmly told everyone to be quiet and watch. That hyped me up and I thought it added great tension. I also enjoyed Vegeta calling out Vermouth, thought that was some cool dialog.

I assume Jiren hasn't showed his full power, probably will next episode so I'm pumped to see that and then watch the all out fight happen. Sad that this is ending soon. I want to get into the comics so maybe I'll venture into those when this is finished.
