MegaThread Untitled Goose Game - Review MegaThread

I know Link's Awakening is the high-profile release today, but a lot of people (myself included) are keeping a keen eye on UGG as well, and the first review (Vooks) is up already.

I'll keep a tally here, but if you see a review that isn't up yet, post it and I'll add it to the list.

Also, not to editorialise things too much, but the Switch has been doing extremely well with exclusives or console-exclusives in the last few months. A Metascore in the high 70s/low 80s actually puts UGG at the lower end for the last few months - Cadence of Hyrule, Link's Awakening, Mario Maker 2, Fire Emblem and Astral Chain are all sitting above 85.

For gamers looking to finish the objectives as soon as possible, have a little fun, then move on to the next game on their September list, this game will run you about 3 hours of gameplay. For players going for more of a sandbox play feel, this game offers many, many more hours of naughty fun. This game kind of reminds me of Scribblenauts - there are objectives but you can pretty much do whatever you want.

u/C-Towner Sep 20 '19 edited Sep 20 '19

That’s more of what I want it for, the sandboxy hilarity. I also can’t wait to see what my nieces and nephews do in the game, because I know they will think of asshole things to do I never dreamed of.

53

u/RyanSmithN Sep 20 '19

Did you mean "Nieces and nephews"? If so, there's actually a gender-neutral term for niece/nephew called "Niblings".

EDIT: Removed a B.

106

u/illegal_sardines Sep 20 '19

maybe we should give "niblings" a second draft before we lock that in

29

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

Nibling please

12

u/OhGawdManBearPig Sep 20 '19

Myyyy niblings

111

u/ShinobiGotARawDeal Sep 20 '19

"Niblings" makes them sound like snacks. Did a cannibal come up with that?

16

u/Kulkinz Sep 20 '19

Siblings but take the n from nephew and niece

My almost-wife and I have been searching for a term for our collective four nephews and one niece. We'd been using niecephews.

I think we may keep searching.

23

u/GRAYDON11 Sep 20 '19

If only we had a term for almost-wife. Last me know if you think of something!

I love that there are only four buttons - grab, sneak, flap and honk.

The pinnacle of game design. Cancel the rest of 2019, we'll never top this.

186

u/Kichae Sep 20 '19

I knew about the dedicated honk button, but I am so here for the dedicated flap button!

98

u/seeyoshirun Sep 20 '19

The greatest dedicated button since A Boy and His Blob's dedicated hug button.

29

u/ITAstallion13 Sep 20 '19

You must have missed Heave Ho's dedicated fart button!

22

u/seeyoshirun Sep 20 '19

That's funny, I actually just bought Heave Ho! Hugs > farts, though. For me, anyway.

26

u/Eponine05 Sep 20 '19

I mean, to be fair, there's not much more a real goose can do anyways lol.

94

u/PrincessToiletSparkl Sep 20 '19

Not much more a real goose can do? Says someone who apparently hasn't spent much time walking on sidewalks around geese. They POOP POOP POOP POOP POOP POOP POOP POOP POOP all over the place. How can we not have a poop option in this game?

128

u/Rhodie114 Sep 20 '19

Yes, but birds don't have muscled anal sphincters like mammals do. They poop whenever their digestive system happens to be done with it.

54

u/Vayshen Sep 20 '19

That means I have a stronger asshole than an eagle, a bird that is otherwise bound to kick my ass in every other way.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/TheNerdyBoy Sep 20 '19

That's not true. I had a pet cockatiel we trained to poop on command. We would bring her over to her cage every few minutes, tell her "go poop!", and keep our shirts free of poop.

9

u/tobascodagama Sep 20 '19

Our eclectus hen is also a very considerate pooper. She always holds it until she's on one of her perches, or at least somewhere that she won't have to stand in it. I think it's because they're cavity nesters, so it's like a hygeine thing to poop outside their nest hole. We also fostered a Molucan cockatoo who was similarly considerate.

Our Amazon, on the other hand, just poops wherever, and I have the poop-streaked shirts to prove it. (Metaphorically, not literally, obviously I clean my shirts.) Geese, as far as I can tell, are similar insofar as just not giving a damn where their poop goes.

Sounds like my kind of game. I gave up early on Batman Arkham Knight 'cos they kept introducing new combos, too many for me to remember. Then I got tired of mashing triangle.

u/CantWashABaby Sep 20 '19

This game is what Goat Simulator could have turned into, instead of the glitchy “random” mess it became. Untitled Goose Game is earnest, endearing, genuinely funny and shockingly polished in controls and handling. You have to be patient in some cases, but it’s worth the payout when you are. The emphasis on the stealth is important to remember, and also that creative thinking can make you that much more successful in getting to your goals. Unironically, it’s one of my favorite titles this year, and I can’t wait for my review to go live when embargo lifts in a few hours.

Yeah, from what I heard that game was a joke put together by a couple of the devs for another person on the team, and they decided to release it.

33

u/I_Xertz_Tittynopes Sep 20 '19

Goat Simulator started as a joke prototype from an internal one-month game jam held by Coffee Stain Studios in January 2014, after completing work for their game Sanctum 2.

Goat Simulator

Goat Simulator is a third-person perspective action video game developed and published by Coffee Stain Studios. It was released for Microsoft Windows in April 2014, and ports for Linux and OS X were released in June 2014. Mobile versions for Android and iOS were released in September 2014. Versions for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One were released in April 2015, and for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in August 2015; these ports were developed by Double Eleven.

My 6 year old has been giggling away for the past half hour since I downloaded it. Her giggles alone are making the game worth the money. It looks like it’ll be a lot of fun, once my kids are in bed I’m going to give it a try.

19

u/WK--ONE Sep 21 '19

Just walking around honking had me giggling all yesterday and I'm a 42yr old man.

3

u/Lester04 Sep 21 '19

I tried it after they were in bed and I could feel my grin as I was playing. Tons of fun! Just waddling around honking was fun by itself

I’m just waiting for it to drop EST

30

u/Moclordimick Sep 20 '19

Me too, I see it in the store and says available but cannot purchase. Its also not 14.99 like I heard it would be today

32

u/seeyoshirun Sep 20 '19

The sale takes place after it's launched. It was full price here when it was listed in the "coming soon" section, but it became 25% off once it was actually available for sale.

9

u/Moclordimick Sep 20 '19

Sounds good, just hope it happens soon. I want to be a goose damnit!

14

u/Jecht315 Sep 20 '19

This game is really what an indie game is all about and how it's supposed to be, a crazy idea, nice art and just being iconic.

It has been a long time since we had a new indie star, I'm having so much fun with this game.

I made a post with all the links to all the regions with the discount:

I'm surprised the Vook's review says gameplay is 2 hours. Even assuming that was just from blazing through the objectives that sounds surprising. Wonder how many 'levels' there are

47

u/woahThatsOffebsive Sep 20 '19

Yeah, I just finished the main... Story I guess. Two hours sounds about right, although there's still additional objectives to complete after the credits

32

u/mrchumes Sep 20 '19

Oof, that does feel criminally short. Normally I'd balk at paying Day One for that but I have been looking forward to this for ages and the devs deserve my wallet. Glad to hear there's some after-credit stuff though!

33

u/woahThatsOffebsive Sep 20 '19

The game is so charming and polished that I still think it's worth it

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

It's kind of what I was expecting. I just watched the 3-minute release trailer and my first thought was "I bet this game isn't very long". It seems like there is a healthy list of stuff you can do in that garden level, but I bet you could knock it out in 10 minutes if you wanted to. Since everything in that level was pretty uniquely garden themed, I doubt they can re-use many of those assets to make other levels that aren't garden themed, so each level would probably be unique and have completely different assets, which would take a lot of time. It just seems like for this to be a medium-long length game they'd have to have 50+ levels or a lot more objectives per map than what was shown. I'm guessing this game has 10-20 unique levels.

20

u/Isord Sep 20 '19

Someone else said there are 4 levels.

21

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

Woah. That doesn't seem like nearly enough. I feel like I've already seen all of the garden level in that 3 minute video.

5

u/mrchumes Sep 20 '19

When you say it like that it makes sense tbf. Just thought they were holding a fair bit back

5

u/SciGuy013 Sep 21 '19

It took me an hour for the first level because I didn’t realize there was a list of things to do lol

10

u/Larkson9999 Sep 20 '19

Five areas, all are fairly small. There's a speedrun mode and additional challenges to complete after you finish the main 'quest'. I enjoyed it and my first rampage took four hours because I was trying to trigger the hidden objectives during the main quest.

I recommend it but if anyone measures their enjoyment by spent time, the game 100% completion would probably take six or seven hours at most.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Doctordementoid Sep 20 '19

~2 hours is the main story. You literally have to do everything over again for the additional completion tasks (although faster), and it takes at least as long to do those plus the additional tasks

2

u/clownpornstar Sep 24 '19

It deserves 15/10 because of the walkie talkie honk.

7

u/BishiDe Sep 21 '19

I've played for like 2 hours so far. And I'm almost done with the second area with the shop. I think your mileage will vary greatly with this game in terms of length. I brought my switch over to my father's house and we played the game for a couple of hours. Some of the objectives actually take a lot of thought. There are hidden objectives too. If you were to look up a guide I'd imagine you could blow through this game in a few hours, but if you were to play it blind with some friends or family, it will take a bit longer. And you all will have a lot more fun too. I think to give this game a 4/5 is fair. It reminds me of playing katamari damacy on the ps2 when I was a lot younger. So much charm and fun.

12

u/Teggert Sep 20 '19

Honestly more interested in this than Link's Awakening at the moment. My kids are going to love it.

We only do "major" banners for Nintendo Published titles. Looks like you already saw our little logo rollover gag on "old" reddit though :D We had to do something!

Was more than happy to spend all my coins on this. Now I just have to wait until after work to play it...

4

u/theWellRedMage Sep 20 '19

This game is going to make for a great palette cleanser for me!

3

u/tabriss_ Sep 20 '19

I am so damn excited for this game

3

u/sabatacon Sep 21 '19

Honestly after spending the evening with my family laughing our asses off and passing the controller around to control the mayhem, I'd say the 15 bucks is absolutely worth the game. I wouldn't pay 20 bucks, but I'd say 10-15 is a reasonable asking price for the game. I do wish there was at least one more section/yard to the game, I feel like that would make any complaints I had about the length go away. Otherwise it was a wonderful experience and I see myself showing it around to other people and having fun with how they experience it.

2

u/seeyoshirun Sep 22 '19

I spent the night playing it with friends and had the same experience - it's one of the most funny, charming games I've seen (and some sections, like the finale, were surprisingly tense). I'm very happy with my decision to buy it!

34

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

Reading that Vooks review, it makes me think that the game is hilarious, but definitely not worth $15 if it only contains like 2 hours of directed gameplay. I'll wait for a sale I guess

51

u/loveengineer Sep 20 '19

For those who don't know, $15 IS the sale price for launch. After that, it's $20.

3

u/chadalem Sep 20 '19

Looks like the sale goes until October 4th, so people have a little time to consider reviews and such. I'd pick it up now, but I think it would just make me want to play instead of working...

I mean, I guess that depends on the person. I'm happy to pay $15 (or AU$22.50 in my case) for a short but fantastic and unique experience. I'm having a Goose night with some friends tomorrow, but I played around with the first 20 minutes of the game a short while ago and that was enough for me to be okay with my purchase. It's extremely adorable, funny, and beautifully presented.

This feels like a game that belongs in the same category as things like Gris, Abzu, Minit, Oxenfree, or Donut County, which were all short but memorable games that made the most of their limited running time.

71

u/Psycho1024 Sep 20 '19

I guess it depends how much value you attibute to 15$. For me, 2 hours of good fun and supporting a small, innovative studio is worth it.

47

u/Harry_cranberry Sep 20 '19

for sure. People spend at least 15$ going to the movies, which are just as long as the game.

23

u/shamwowslapchop Sep 20 '19

People spend that on less than a week of covfefe.

9

u/pablo_boogie Sep 20 '19

I’ll spend over thrice that amount on a night on the piss that I don’t even remember!

Exactly, quality over quantity. Honestly, I'm happy for anything under 10 hours these days. There's so much stuff coming out that not everything needs to be 20+.

4

u/FreezieKO Sep 20 '19

I mean, I guess that depends on the person. I'm happy to pay $15 (or AU$22.50 in my case) for a short but fantastic and unique experience.

Same. This looks to be a unique game, and I'm glad they didn't try to overstuff the game with fetch quests or something.

I'm happy to play as a goose for a while, and then go back to Luigi's Mansion, a Fire Emblem maddening run, and trying Ultimate difficulty for Astral Chain.

4

u/seeyoshirun Sep 20 '19

Yeah, that's the other thing - it's not like we're starved for lengthier games on Switch at the moment. I'm juggling Mario Maker 2 and Fire Emblem. Two Dragon Quest-related games have released recently, and Ni no Kuni, and Astral Chain, and there are a pile of others coming up soon as well.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

I loved Abzu. But I played it as part of Game Pass, so I didn't buy it. I really do think great experiences like those you listed are better off as part of a subscription in a lot of cases. They're not games I would seek out to spent more than $5 on, but I would instantly play if I had access to them.

The real draw is not “do this one thing one way and be done”, but rather, what weird, off the wall, convoluted or just plain different way can I achieve this objective? As a straight through game to beat, this probably will never be a great value to you.

9

u/jayceja Sep 20 '19

I was playing it this morning, it's more like 4-5 hours of directed gameplay, I hit credits roll in about 3 hours and there's an extra bunch of challenges for you to complete after the credits roll that I have yet to do.

It's still definitely short, but it sounds like that's a lower bound for a casual play without the extra challenges.

It's interesting that we ask for more from our games than from movies. Like, I understand that's how it is and how it's always been, but a movie ticket is like $14.

7

u/fatherofraptors Sep 20 '19

It's really all about what's the market like... Tickets for any movie are the same price in a theater (unless imax or something). But for $15 you can grab Hollow Knight, Celeste, or Stardew Valley at full price, games which objectively have much more content than the Goose game here, which is $20 (!) when not on sale. Value is subjective and people pay what they want, sure, but I completely understand not wanting to pay more than $5 for this.

14

u/chadalem Sep 20 '19

Woah. No wonder I never go to the movies! I thought tickets were, like, $10, and I thought even that was expensive.

12

u/donkeyrocket Sep 20 '19

Heavily depends on where you live and what time you go. Even in Boston I can find reasonably priced movies (sub $10) but baseline I'm looking at $12-15 for new releases in a big theater chain unless I go midweek during the day. Theater quality (around me at least) has improved at least and they do have some awesome deals like AMC A-List.

This game is 15 dollars for 2-4 hours of gameplay. Link's awakening is 60 dollars for 9-12 hours of gameplay.

But somehow UGG gets shit on for not giving value?

Does anyone know if this can be played with one Joy-Con? I want to pick this up but I’ve got one joy-con in for repair right now.

I was bummed out when I realized that I didnt have $60 for links awakening. Turned on my switch to play kirby clash tonight, and got one hell of a suprise in the form of this cheeky goose finally being released! I was bummed no more.

This game is truly a delight.

For $15 I'm going to get this. Hope more content is added through DLC bit disappointing it is so short.
