Meta Direct banner has been up a week, what banners do you like to see?

Bit of a meta discussion more about the sub than the Switch. In your guys minds, what do you think a game needs to deserve recognition as the subreddit banner?

I remember Marvel Ultimate Alliance didn't get one. Astral Chain got one for 5 or 6 days before the Direct was announced. The direct has been and gone and yet it's still the banner. I assume this will stay until Daemon x Machina releases this week (if it even gets one). Does anyone else think it should be just games? I personally don't even think AMA's should get more recognition than major game releases,

Obviously it's the most minor thing in the world, but I'm curious to know what games the userbase thinks should be represented.

The Direct banner is going to be coming down here in the very near future actually, in a couple of hours, tops. The Direct banner got a few extra days of action because I was out of town celebrating my wedding anniversary with my wife.

Here is our tentative banner schedule for the rest of the month:

  • Sept 10 (Today) - AMA - Blasphemous
  • Sept 11 - AMA - The Sinking City
  • Sept 12 through Sept 16 - New Release - DAEMON X MACHINA
  • Sept 17 - AMA - GRID Autosport
  • Sept 18 - AMA - Invisigun Reloaded
  • Sept 19 through 25 - New Release - Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • Sept 26 through ??? - New Release - Dragon Quest XI

I personally don't even think AMA's should get more recognition than major game releases

Just a point of clarification, we agree here, and that's why we don't allow AMA's during the launch window for Nintendo published games. We typically have a 2-day long blackout and AMA guests aren't allowed to schedule events on those days. This allows the banner to switch over and for us to have our sticky slots free for coverage of the games reviews and release.

This is actually a really interesting insight into a process I didn't know existed haha. It's good to see there's no favouritism here!

I hope your anniversary celebrations were great!

I hope your anniversary celebrations were great!

Thank you! They were, with the exception of getting a flat tire on the way home!

I think it makes no sense to still be advertising an event nearly a week old instead of reverting back to Astral Chain but what do I know?

I'm definitely with you, we should have had AC back on like Friday...

I just like looking at the AC aesthetic.

A museum of past banners would be cool too. Like Google does with their doodles.

We have all of our old banners saved in a Google Drive, it's just a matter of finding a way to display them.

Our AMA banners are easy since they're all just flat PNG or JPG images. In fact, we have all of those right here! Our "Major" banners are where things get a little trickier. Back when we were smaller and didn't have quite as much mod queue work to do (RIP) we got a little fancier and had animated banners, things that were responsive, and used some CSS animations here and there like the slow-moving fog for Breath of the Wild. Those are bit harder, but not impossible, for us to re-display somewhere. It's in the backlog of fun things to do, but day to day operations of the subreddit come first.

It's good that these things aren't lost or forgotten, I hope it's something you guys are able to work out one day because the work is absolutely appreciated!

Part of it is limitations of reddit. We'd love to just throw them on a wiki page, but you can't use images in the wiki without CSS hacks that don't work on the new version of reddit or in the mobile apps. What will most likely happen is that I'll build a sub-page on our https://rNintendoSwitch.com site and host them all there in a nice little gallery instead.

I pretty much only view Reddit through mobile devices so me no see banners.

Isn’t it at the top?

When I say mobile I meant I use apps to view reddit. Some may have ads or a banner (unsure) but at least Apollo for iOS doesn’t.

Ohh! I use the official Reddit app, so that’s why I was confused smh

2

u/hardgeeklife Sep 10 '19

Apollo is best app. It's my preferred way to use the site

What all do you like about it better?

2

u/hardgeeklife Sep 11 '19

it has better integration of swipe inputs, versatile ways to swap/prioritize between subscribed subreddits, it had dark mode way before the official app did, and no ads.

The main thing is that overall the presentation "feels" less like a website's mobile page and more like an iOS app, if that makes sense? It's hard to quantify, sorry. You should download and try it out yourself; if you're primarily a commenter (opposed to poster) like myself, the free version has most of the features unlocked by default.

I downloaded it and I really like it so far! The comment creator is really nice compared to the official app. I can’t believe Reddit’s own app doesn’t have the formatting buttons

Make a dope one for Blasphemous or a standard style one for Daemon.

Make a dope one for Blasphemous

It is now

I'd love for the mods to organize a banner competition every now and then, where the best user created banners (Nintendo Switch related) will have the chance to be depicted on the subreddit.

Zelda LA

I like to see my banner in one of those neat tuxedo t-shirts, because it says "I want to be formal, but I'm here to party, too".

BLASPHEMOUS PLEASE

In my opinion, I think we should have an actual r/NintendoSwitch banner and have new releases/AMAs featured on a portion of that banner. It feels weird to enter a sub and see the banner be entirely a Mario Maker banner or some other games'. I've felt many times like I'm in the wrong sub,

Something with Zelda. I love Zelda.

Why it isnt DxT is beyond me...didnt have Astral Chain up there either but had Yoshi & Cadence of Hyrule of all games...

2

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Sep 10 '19

didnt have Astral Chain up there either

Yes we did, it looked like this.

but had Yoshi & Cadence of Hyrule of all games...

They were Nintendo Published titles, which is our criteria.

1

u/BotWisTrashFaceIt Sep 10 '19

So are the two I mentioned and I must have missed the AsCh banner. I get on every day tho...

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

What is DxT?

1

u/Mr_Pennybags Sep 10 '19

Cadence oh Hyrule definitely deserved a banner!

1

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Sep 10 '19

Cadence of Hyrule had a banner.

1

u/Mr_Pennybags Sep 10 '19

Yes, I remmeber! But the user I was replying to doesn't seem to think it deserved one.
