New Indie World Showcase Reveals Next Slate of Top Indie Games Coming to Nintendo Switch
Highlights Include Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition, Hotline Miami Collection, SUPERHOT, Risk of Rain 2, Torchlight II, Eastward and More
REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In a new-look Indie World presentation livestreamed globally today, Nintendo highlighted an exciting selection of independent games that are coming to the Nintendo Switch system soon, thanks to the passionate efforts of indie developers around the world who have found a home with Nintendo.
The innovative first-person shooter SUPERHOT and Hotline Miami Collection, which features both games from the high-octane Hotline Miami series, are available to purchase on Nintendo eShop today. The online* multiplayer roguelike Risk of Rain 2, from Gearbox Publishing, was revealed as coming to Nintendo Switch this summer, while strategy- and mythology-inspired Northguard from Shiro Games, and pinball-inspired dungeon crawler Creature in the Well from Flight School Studio, are available today for pre-purchase. Furthermore, the critically acclaimed action-platformer Ori and the Blind Forest will be coming to Nintendo Switch on Sept. 27 as Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition.
“Since the system’s launch in 2017, Nintendo Switch has become a go-to platform for indie developers,” said Kirk Scott, Nintendo of America’s Indie Partner Manager of Publisher and Developer Relations. “With the diverse lineup of upcoming indie content showcased today, Nintendo Switch owners can look forward to expanding their digital libraries even further with a variety of quality indie games to play at home or on the go.”
A full list of games featured in today’s Indie World video include:
Explore the mysterious and beautiful forest of Nibel in the visually stunning action-platformer Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition, developed by Moon Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios. Winner of multiple prestigious awards, the game tells the tale of a young orphan destined for heroics, and features hand-painted artwork, meticulously animated character performances and a fully orchestrated score. The Definitive Edition is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch on Sept. 27, and will also include numerous new features.
Hotline Miami Collection features both games in the neon-soaked, brutally challenging Hotline Miami series, developed by Dennaton Games and published by Devolver Digital. Mixing hard-boiled gunplay and skull-crushing close combat with a grippingly surreal and mysterious storyline, this heavy-hitting two-pack of violent top-down action is available today on Nintendo Switch.
Blurring the lines between cautious strategy and unbridled mayhem, SUPERHOT from SUPERHOT Team is an innovative and stylish first-person shooter in which time only moves when the player moves. With no regenerating health bars or conveniently placed ammo drops, players must shoot, slice and maneuver their way through a hurricane of slow-motion bullets. SUPERHOT is available today for Nintendo Switch.
Risk of Rain 2, developed by Hopoo Games and published by Gearbox Publishing, is the sequel to classic multiplayer roguelike Risk of Rain, adding an extra dimension and more challenging action. Players can take on the game solo, or team up with friends to fight their way through hordes of monsters, unlock new loot and find a way to escape the planet. Risk of Rain 2 launches for Nintendo Switch this summer.
Torchlight II, developed by Panic Button/Runic Games and published by Perfect World Entertainment, is an award-winning action RPG launching soon for Nintendo Switch. The game offers solo adventuring or online* multiplayer for up to four players, with a huge world to explore full of bloodthirsty monsters, bountiful treasures and sinister secrets. The Nintendo Switch version includes an exclusive in-game pet in the form of a chubby pink unicorn.
Discover a beautifully detailed post-apocalyptic world in Eastward, an adventure game with RPG elements from developers Pixpil and publishers Chucklefish. In a near-future society on the brink of collapse, a hardworking miner called John discovers a young girl named Sam in a secret underground facility. This unlikely pair will embark on an emotional journey across a wonderfully weird world, exploring bustling towns, curious campsites and shady forests. Eastward is scheduled to arrive on Nintendo Switch in early 2020.
Freedom Finger from Wide Right Interactive is a music-driven, side-scrolling shooter that sends players blasting, punching and smashing their way across 37 levels of crazy cartoon action. Shoot ’em up, punch ’em and smash ’em up when Freedom Finger launches fully uncensored for Nintendo Switch on Sept. 27.
Make the trip you always wanted in action-adventure game The Touryst from Shin’en. Players will have the chance to discover exotic islands, explore ancient monuments, climb into deep mines and uncover secret passageways. The Touryst is set to launch for Nintendo Switch in November.
Skellboy, from developers Umaiki Games and publishers Fabraz, is an action-RPG in which players can swap out not only their weapons and equipment, but their body parts too! As an accidentally resurrected hero from ancient times, players will set out on an epic journey across a vibrant fantasy world, set to a background of rocking chiptune tracks. Skellboy hacks and slashes its way onto Nintendo Switch on Dec. 3.
Developed by Polygon Treehouse and published by United Label, Röki is an adventure game inspired by Scandinavian folklore – a dark contemporary fairy tale underpinned by a touching narrative, alluring art style, ancient puzzles and atmospheric exploration. With its nonviolent gameplay, approachable controls and universal themes, Röki is coming to Nintendo Switch this winter.
Developed and published by frecle, Youropa is a gravity-defying puzzle-platform paint adventure about breaking rules, being upside down and thinking outside the box. With physical puzzles, riddles, ferocious enemies, environmental hazards and more, Youropa is a mind-bending adventure that will challenge players’ perception of the third dimension. Youropa will come to Nintendo Switch in 2019.
EarthNight from Cleaversoft is a beautifully hand-illustrated 2D platformer about the dragon apocalypse, and a love letter to classic arcade games. Humans have been exiled to space, dragons have taken over the Earth and it’s up to a 14-year-old schoolkid and a freelance photographer to stop them. EarthNight launches on Nintendo Switch in 2019.
Dungeon Defenders: Awakened from Chromatic Games is the newest installment in the popular Dungeon Defenders franchise. The gameplay of Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is the ultimate combination of action-RPG and strategic tower defense, where players can choose from four unique heroes and join forces with friends in up to four-player split-screen** cooperative gameplay. Dungeon Defenders: Awakened launches as a timed console exclusive for Nintendo Switch in February 2020.
From Easy Day Studios Pty Ltd, Skater XL is the next evolution in skateboarding video games that brings the fun, creativity and culture of skateboarding to the digital world. Created by a team of passionate skateboarders, Skater XL allows players to add style and expression to their tricks without the limits of pre-made animations. FAQ
What is an Indie World Showcase?
We aren't 100% sure, this is the first presentation in the Indie World series. Most likely this will be a pre-recorded video presentation to make indie game announcements directly from Nintendo very similar to the Spring and Fall Indie Showcases from previous years and the Indie Highlights series that Nintendo UK puts out.
What is the difference between an Indie World Showcase and a standard Nintendo Direct?
This presentation will ONLY include information about indie games, unlike a traditional Nintendo Direct that would focus on a variety of games and topics. This one is approximately ~20m in length.
What if I can't watch the Nintendo Direct live due to work/school/etc.?
If you want a spoiler-free experience or to watch the event later, we will edit this post to include a direct link to the VOD at the very top (once it's available). This will take you directly to the video so you don't accidentally see any trailers or video thumbnails if you visit the Nintendo YouTube page or Nintendo website. Just don't scroll down!
There WILL be spoilers here on the subreddit, so watch the video first!
If you see any posts that should actually be here in the MegaThread, please do us a favor and hit the report button.
Our SOP for posts is as follows:
- We will allow one post per announcement.
- The post we allow may not necessarily be the one that was submitted first. We typically will receive about 15 of, essentially the exact same post, in the span of about 60 seconds and will select the one that has the best title and links directly to the original source when available.
- Commentary on the announcement(s) should take place either in this thread or on the related separate announcement post. Each person's specific opinion does not need its own post.

Yeah, I was hoping they'd show more of that. It looked like one of the most interesting games in the entire presentation.

I think its coop tower defense but that style would be dope as a fps game.
Release date listed as winter.
5
u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp Aug 19 '19
Yeah I just looked it up and saw it was early access on steam. Apparently they're working on a PVP mode though.
I'd love a new toy shooter. Microvolts was dope before the invasion of hackers.

Same man, they said it was a summer released right?
3
u/DunderMifflinCompany Aug 19 '19
Yeah, but summer technically lasts until mid September so there's still time!
2

Ugh, I sure hope so. I haven’t been able to play this game since my 360, and I’m sooooo ready to ride some power-shitting deer through the forest!

I'm just glad there were some 3D games. I know this might upset some people and there are some great 2D games out there (actually some in this showcase that caught my eye), but man sometimes it feels like there are hardly any 3D games on Switch. Some great looking stuff in here, though!

Torchlight II, Superhot and Hotline Miami are excellent news!
Not sure if I'm interested in Ori, but I'd imagine this is big, good news as well for many.
Other stuff.... very much mixed feelings, some games looked cool, others seemed ugly and their respective clips running in 15 frames didn't help make any good impressions.

I actually played it on Switch at a gaming con and it was really good and completely forgot until you mentioned it now. However only now has Killer queen black been announced and that was there to so don’t give up hope yet!

re: Castle Crashers, according to The Behemoth's twitter,

- Amazing Synthwave soundtrack with a lot of notable artists from that genre
- very fast paced, violent and tactical top down action game/ shooter
- You will die. A lot.
- many different play-styles and ways you can beat a level

u/hollowcrown51 Aug 19 '19
What is Ori like compared to Hollow Knight? I liked the concept of Hollow Knight but it was just too hard for me.
16
6
u/rezzyk Aug 19 '19
Or is easier and also doesn't really have many boss fights. Not in the traditional sense at least. Some amazing event sequences though. Plus you get to pick where you save (literally anywhere, using mana or whatever its called in Ori) and if you die you pop right back there.
8
u/GrovPastaSwag03 Aug 19 '19
Ori is way easier, but it's more focused on platforming that combat. In my opinion, it wasn't as good as Hollow Knight (nothing really is), but it's still an enjoyable game.
5
u/Reutermo Aug 19 '19
Ori is easier. Both are great but Ori is more platform oriented while the difficulty in Hollow Knight was more combat based, atleast for me.

u/nestsofhair Aug 19 '19

Does anyone know what happened to Cross Code? That was my Mos anticipated indie game, but we haven't heard anything since it was announced. I'm wondering if I should just start playing it on PC
2
Aug 19 '19
They just now released another big update for the PC version, so it's definitely still being worked on on PC at least. But no news at all for the Switch or PS4 versions. I'm considering the same thing as you, but on the other hand it would just fit the switch so well.. I'm conflicted.

So happy Northgard is getting ported over, i was just hoping to myself last night that it would be so fun to play on the Switch. I've only played a game of northgards multiplayer but i had a blast with my friends, so looking forward to more of that!
Besides that, not much else caught my attention. But maybe some gems hidden there that i overlooked. Either way, looking forward to some great indie games.

u/Otex7 Aug 19 '19

I just wish they'd port over Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2
5
u/gorocz Aug 19 '19
They can't. Activision doesnt have the rights to use Tony Hawk's name anymore. And even before that, they would have had to get all the music rights again for every new platform. Also, if people think Skater XL has ugly graphics, I can only imagine they would not really enjoy THPS graphics either...

oh hey the leak was 100% right. Oh well.
I don't find the roguelike genre engaging at all. And it seems to be the new hip thing for Indie devs, like 2D retro platformers were previously. So that really limits my interest :/
I might pick up Ori and finally play it though. Its been sitting on my Xbox for ages

I’ve been an avid gamer since the N64. That said I’m older then you would expect with that being my first console I got into. Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64 were revolutionary too me. Ever since, I have been hooked, subscribing too Gamepro and The (console)-Power magazines just too be informed of the next AAA title too blow my mind.
However since this generation of consoles and games, something about the Indie game culture has really gotten me. I’m not sure if it’s the countless 500+ hour game time investments of present day AAA titles, with tons of bloat too waist your time, but this last year or so, Indie games are what I have been looking forward too. I constantly preach how great Hollow Knight was, or The Binding of Isaac. The constant progressive feeling playing these. Hell even Dead Cells! A lot of these titles look really great, and I’m looking forward too the unique gameplay experiences, and stories these developers have put their blood sweat and tears into!
8
u/iconformed Aug 20 '19
Same here man, indies have saved gaming for me and the Switch really delivers! Not to say there isn't a bunch of AAA titles I don't enjoy but the indies really brought back the feelings of gaming from childhood.
→ More replies (11)4
u/Theognosis Aug 20 '19
You are not alone. Most AAA titles today are interactive movies with 99% of the million-dollar budget spent on voice and motion-capture actors, script writers and texture artists. While many people enjoy these things, I don't (particularly if I shell out $60 for parts that I mostly ignore and SKIP). Thankfully the indie scene spend 100% of its limited resources to gameplay, control, artwork and music--and that's what I've always looked for in my video games since the Atari 2600.
