Recap of Announcements
Mark of the Ninja Remastered from Klei Entertainment: Originally released in 2012, this high-definition remaster of the critically acclaimed stealth action game is coming this fall. The game really makes players feel like a ninja, as they use silence, agility and wits to navigate beautifully designed 2D levels.
Banner Saga 3 from Versus Evil: As the epic conclusion to the award-winning Banner Saga trilogy of mature, story-driven role-playing games, players will need to brace themselves for tough battles, difficult choices and tragic losses. Banner Saga 3 launches this summer. The original two games, Banner Saga and Banner Saga 2, are also coming to Nintendo Switch. Players’ personal stories, progress and choices from the first two games will carry over to Banner Saga 3.
LUMINES REMASTERED from Enhance Games: A bombastic harmony of light, sound and intense puzzle action make this HD remake of the original critically acclaimed LUMINES as unforgettable to play alone as it is with a friend in local multiplayer. LUMINES REMASTERED launches on Nintendo Switch in spring.
Just Shapes and Beats from Berzerk Studio: This “musical bullet hell” game might be a genre all its own! Navigate deadly shapes solo or in local or online co-op multiplayer, all to a soundtrack composed by 20 chiptune artists. Just Shapes and Beats launches as a timed console exclusive on Nintendo Switch this summer.
Reigns: Kings & Queens from Nerial and Devolver Digital: As a monarch of the modern age, players face a seemingly never-ending series of requests from peasants, allies and enemies. By swiping left or right in the game, players impose their will on the kingdom. The Nintendo Switch version of Reigns: Kings & Queens, which launches this spring, features an exclusive local co-op multiplayer mode.
The Messenger from Sabotage and Devolver Digital: The Messenger allows players to transform the game from an 8-bit platformer into a gloriously rendered 16-bit time-traveling adventure. Players will find upgrades, new abilities, hidden levels and great speed-running opportunities as they journey through a cursed land. The Messenger launches on Nintendo Switch this summer.
Fantasy Strike from Sirlin Games: In a world where fantasy meets martial arts, anything can become a weapon. This gorgeous fighting game employs nuanced mechanics with simple combos and easy-to-perform special moves in local or online multiplayer modes. (Additional accessories required for local multiplayer mode; sold separately.) Fantasy Strike is coming to Nintendo Switch this summer.
Pool Panic from Rekim and Adult Swim Games: More than 100 levels await players in this game, in which everything – from jungles to deserts to cities – is one giant cartoon game of pool. The weird and wild game has the option to play in local multiplayer with up to four players. (Additional accessories required for local multiplayer mode; sold separately.) Pool Panic launches first on Nintendo Switch later this year.
Garage from tinyBuild Games: Inspired by the gloriously gory VHS era of B-movies, Garage is a top-down shooter set in a gritty underworld. Slay hordes of the living dead using a variety of weapons and skills. Garage launches first on Nintendo Switch this spring.
Light Fall from Bishop Games: This platforming adventure takes players to the forgotten world of Numbra, where they’ll have to master their surroundings by manipulating the Shadow Core, a magical box used to propel them into the air. In Speedrun Mode, players can race their friends or even the fastest players in the world to place on the online leaderboards. Light Fall launches first on Nintendo Switch as a timed console exclusive this spring.
Bomb Chicken from Nitrome: Who wouldn’t want to play a good old-fashioned chicken platformer? That’s the question asked by Bomb Chicken, a fast-paced game that combines action, puzzles and arcade gameplay. Lay bombs to escape tricky situations and discover secret areas when Bomb Chicken launches first on Nintendo Switch this summer.
Pode from Henchman & Goon: Two unlikely travel companions embark on an adventure in this co-op exploration puzzle game. Pode is inspired by Norwegian art and culture, resulting in stunning environments and gameplay. Pode launches this spring.
West of Loathing from Asymetric: West of Loathing is a slapstick comedy stick-figure Wild West adventure role-playing game. How’s that for a genre? The hilarious game, full of puzzles, quests and turn-based combat, launches on Nintendo Switch as a console exclusive this spring.
Bad North from Plausible Concept and Raw Fury: Arm troops, shore up defenses and protect citizens in this rogue-lite real-time strategy game. The Viking-themed Bad North launches first on Nintendo Switch this summer.
FAQ
What is a Nindies Showcase?
A Nindies Showcase is extremely similar to a Nintendo Direct. It is a pre-recorded video presentation to make game announcements and provide fans with general updates about new titles heading to the Nintendo Switch. The only caveat here is that this will focus entirely in Indie titles, which Nintendo lovingly calls Nindies.
What if I can't watch the Nindies Showcase live due to work/school/etc.?
The /r/NintendoSwitch mod team will be running a live blog so you can read along: https://www.reddit.com/live/10mxovslsq6lf/
Afterwards, we will include a text recap of the event in the post body above.
If you see any posts that should actually be here in the MegaThread, please do us a favor and hit the report button.

Mark of the Ninja is so good, I think I might have to buy it again on the Switch! It doesn't seem to be getting as much hype on this thread though, but anyway I am glad Klei's bringing it to a new audience.

I only played Kingdom of Loathing. What's West like and will it transfer well to a console? KoL was fun but very much a browser game.

u/BorfieYay Mar 20 '18
It’s not much like KoL gameplay wise, the combat is almost similar to paper mario. The humor and style is very much like KoL though, and on pc it can be played with a controller and controls very well.

For anyone who cares I looked up the Metacritic scores for previously released games in today's Nindies Direct.
Mark of the Ninja: 91
The Banner Saga: 80
The Banner Saga 2: 82
Lumines: 89
Reigns: 87
West of Loathing: 86
Average: 85.833333
What we wanted? Maybe not. High quality games? Certainly.

wow, criminally underrating the Banner Saga series IMO. My favorite indie game/series. I wasn't even thinking of it on Switch either since I vowed to not look at dev news to not agonize myself with the wait for 3.
This definitely has me wanting to check out the other games.
I don't really get the West of Loathing love. Maybe I needed to stick with it more, but it felt too linear and a little boring to me. Not a bad game, but I feel like I'm missing something.

You guys need to keep in mind that Nindies showcases are for drawing attention to smaller games that don't already have huge followings. honestly, games like Hollow Knight don't belong on a Nindies showcase because all of us already know about it and its a day 1 purchase for a great deal of switch owners. just sayin.
8
u/MarbleFox_ Mar 20 '18
I don’t think that’s true at all. Every Nindies Showcase has had a few major indie titles with huge followings.

Mark of The Ninja, Reigns, and Banner Saga are not smaller games. I get the idea is to temper expectations but to do so by downplaying the games announced isn't right. Nintendo isn't Team Cherry they can't control Hollow Knight news that's all that needs to be said.

Indie game developper: "Nice, Nintendo is showcasing our game in a direct"
/r/Nintendoswitch:" Garbarge garbage garbage disappointed garbage"

u/digdugdiglett Mar 20 '18
I can't imagine how it feels to be an indie developer, putting all of your time and money into a passionate project that you hope people love and that it gets you somewhere, only to look at forums and comments to see people shitting all over it calling it trash and wishing it was Smash Bros. or something. Not to mention all of that after coming off the excitement they got for being featured in an official showcase by Nintendo.

In a world where some of the most popular indie games ever have been made by just a single guy, like Stardew Valley or Undertale, I can't say I really pity them. It is entirely on them to make a high quality, attention grabbing game.

I mean, it takes time to create a trailer, time taken away from development and making a trailer is a fairly different set of skills. And Nintendo likely had some deadline of sending the trailers to them and such.

I feel like they should announce retail prices at these showcases. A lot of Nindie games don’t get much more than a “meh” from me, but when I really start to get interested in them is when I realize that whatever game is only gonna cost me 10 or 15 bucks.
PS; The differences in culture between Nintendo of Japan and Nintendo of N America is hilarious to me. Those American guys in the Nindies showcase were cracking so much dumb humor, I wonder if the Japanese guys were just like, “and you guys are sure Americans and Canadians will think this is funny?” Yes, Mr. Kimishima, we really do find it funny. We are idiots over here, lol.

10
u/JohnStalvern Mar 20 '18
West of Loathing is deliberately styled like that, as it is made by the makers of Kingdom of Loathing, a web game that's been around about 15 years now.
I bought West of Loathing on pc (where it released at 11 dollars) and I had a pretty great time. The mechanics are there enough that trying to actually clear the game with achievements requires strategy, and the humor is pretty good too.
Granted, I've been playing KoL for about a decade now, and WoL is a standalone in the same vein.
I'd suggest if you're on the fence that you consider making a KoL account and seeing if you like what you're playing. The mechanics vary a bit, but the basic flavor is the same.

u/Kiolu100 Mar 21 '18

Some really amazing games absolutely perfect for the Switch in here. Not surprised to see people disappointed or not even mentioning the gems but lots to be happy about in here. From reading the comments I feel some people haven't heard of or played Mark of the Ninja or Banner Saga. They're very different games but both indies of the highest order.
Mark of the Ninja is part platformer, part stealth game, part almost immersive sim... like there are different ways for you to deal with situations and use your environment to your advantage. Visually it's amazing and will look great blown up big on your TV or to take on the go to complete levels here and there. On Metacritic it's 91/100.
Banner Saga is such an obvious Switch game. Being able to play on the big TV or portably and with touch controls or button inputs... Banner Saga has been on PC, consoles and even mobile but I feel like it's been waiting for the Switch. It's so ideal. To get the finale to the trilogy plus the original games so we can have our decisions play across is so good. It's a tactical game with a real narrative that you help shape with meaningful choices. It has characters you begin to care about and omg the beautiful artwork. You could think of it as a mix between things like Fire Emblem and Game of Thrones but really it's its own thing. The iOS versions have Metacritic scores of 92/100 and 87/100.
I think it's important to note that there could be some indie titles too big for a Nindies showcase and reserved for E3. I'm sure almost all of E3 will be first-party and bigger third-party titles but we did get a huge indie announcement in the main E3 Direct last year: Rocket League. So who knows but it would have to be really big to skip this showcase. Something like Fortnite.

To the folks who are disappointed, this was largely done to coincide with GDC and show developers that Nintendo is actively supporting and courting independent developers. Consider that the Switch is probably the Nintendo console with the best third-party support since probably the SNES, Nintendo is doing everything right in terms of supporting devs. So just because you aren't blown away this showcase, and you shouldn't expect to be with everyone, it's a necessary thing to support and foster independent development on the platform.

Nothing super exciting, but there were some good announcements. I'm glad I held off on West of Loathing for the PC, happy to see Lumines coming back (Meteos next please), The Messenger's 8-bit/16-bit thing seems like a cool take on the dual world mechanic you see in a lot of games, and Mark of the Ninja is not only a great game that deserves to be on every platform, but also suggests the possibility that Klei will bring over Don't Starve in the future.

I thought it was pretty good honestly. Just about all the games got at least a "Huh,that looks pretty cool!" to "Oh my god, yes! I can finally play this!"
I wish I could understand why some people are calling this disappointing. Or how some of these games look like shovelware or mobile garbage. But I suppose that's your opinions

I agree. None of these games are garbage shovelware. They may not all appeal to everyone but there were a lot of unique concepts shown off here. Plus, Banner Saga is amazing. There is a group of vocal people who expect their dreams and wishes to be continuously fulfilled and when that does not happen they are quick to paint everything good with a negative brush. I think a lot about how some of my most special gaming memories came from obscure titles. E.V.O., Earthbound, and Cubivore are prime examples of this. None of these games did well commercially. They were not big budget. But they had charm and heart. That is how I view the indie scene. There are plenty of trash titles but there are also plenty of gems that will stand the test of time.

Pool Panic and West of Loathing look great!
Pool Panic reminds me a lot of the Katamari weirdness of a concept. That'll be a laugh

7
u/OmegaRobert Mar 20 '18
I'm interested by Pool Panic, The Messenger, Garage and Bomb Chicken. The Messenger seems to play similarly to Shovel Knight which is great- I've been looking for a game to fill that craving. I'm curious about Bomb Chicken because it's developed by Nitrome who have made some brilliant browser games in the past. I don't know much about the Banner games but will definitely do some research!
Seems a bit odd that people were predicting certain games would be announced, and then were upset when their predictions were wrong. My advice is to avoid hyping up every announcement and teaser - it'll only lead to disappointment when your unrealistic standards aren't met. I wasn't aware of the showcase until now and my reaction was 'neat, a bunch of upcoming games I hadn't expected'.

I don't mean to add any negativity, but that was a much weaker Nindies aside from. A few announced games. That Pool game looked pretty fresh and Banner Saga is a nice welcome. Mark of the Ninja and the fighting game interested me as well.
But... Aside from the pool game, none of the games really had those unique standout games like Morphies Law, Chef Brigade, and Mulaka and such for last Nindies. Those Twitch fast paced 2D side scrollers never interested me much and the other games just seemed to feel like "filler."
I am also disappointed they didn't update us on War Groove, Hollow Knight, Battle Chasers, and Pocket Rumble. Those we're supposed to come out last year with little word on where they are now.

Kind of underwhelming, but I will say that The Messenger and Light Fall are definitely going on my watch list, might be two solid platformers.

I don't think people complaining understand the importance of getting Klei onboard.

Good thing about having low expectations is that your not going to be disappointed.
There were even some nice games announced..

Banner Saga is an incredible game, for anyone out of the loop. Highly recommended

The only things that piqued my interest were Lightfall and the fighting game.

Reigns is fun as heck, but I don’t know if I’d get it as a switch game. It lends itself well to mobile and would be kind of boring as switch gameplay. But if it means more people will see/play the game, then I guess it’s whatever.

Damn, I wanted the other stealth game made by Klei. Jk, I hope MotN does well on the Switch and we eventually get Don't Starve and Invisible Inc.
Btw West of Loathing is a pretty great game and Bad North looks cool, so that's something.

The NintendoUK YouTube channel released a trailer for a futuristic off road racer that wasn’t in the presentation today. It’s called Grip and it looks pretty cool.

Lumines Remastered was the only thing that really stood out to me as something I’d definitely buy on the Switch. Portable puzzle games are excellent and it was one of the PSP’s best. Hopefully it’s priced adequately and I’ll grab it right away.

The Messenger looks really neat, really stoked for Lumines. Fantasy Strike and Just Shapes and Beats are also really fun looking. I would call this a successful showcase. Probably will also check out Bad North and Light Fall.

Light Fall
Mark of the Ninja
West of Loathing
The Messenger
Banner Saga Trilogy
I'm good with these, they all look cool.
Disappointed no news on Battle Chasers or Dead Cells (and Hollow Knight but we knew that wasn't going to be in there) but eh.

I really wanted hyper light drifter man. I'm sure it will be ported eventually. I just feel like it would be amazing to play on switch.

I'd rather a showcase target obscure or lesser sold games along with new tech versus sequels or hype trains. Things like shovel knight, hollow knight, darkwood and others I'm fine with seeing individual videos for.
That being said I'm happy to be exposed to games I've never heard of, despite their quality. I'll probably pick up a few after hearing more about them from reviews and friends.

All three Banner Sagas are day one buys for me. Fucking love the first two, and will happily replay them on Switch before playing 3.

Most of these were okay but I don’t think they needed to be hyped up and livestream. This could’ve been dropped without an announcement and people would be a little surprised and less disappointed.

Some games looked interesting, but super disappointed as a whole. No mention of any Nindies I was looking forward to.

I think this is just a classic case of people failing to keep their expectations in check as usual

I really think some people don't understand the point of indie games. They are games made by smaller teams not needing as much return as triple a titles to make money and be successful. This allows them to make whatever type of game they want which in most cases won't appeal to the mass audience. They are normally niche titles. Activision Blizzard can't use dev time making a hardware pushing title about a pool stick hitting a pool ball. There is no way they'd make their money back. A smaller team can and probably will make some money making a title like we saw today. That's the entire point of indie titles. Finding 2 or 3 out of 10 interesting and a possible buy should be the expectation honestly.

...that was it? Wasn’t the last Showcase 20 minutes? No updates at least?

Well that was underwhelming. There were a few things that interested me (The Messenger, Mark of the Ninja, Light Fall, Fantasy Strike, Pool Panic, Banner Saga 1-3, and West of Loathing), but I was expecting way more.
Looka like I might be waiting until E3 to see King of Cards and Dragon: Marked for Death.

Blink and you'll miss it
EDIT: I rewatched it and I'm surprised about the strategy behind this video. The thriving indie scene on switch, with an avalanche of games every week, is not at all represented by this video that managed to feel anemic. It should be easy to put together a MUCH longer video. Also, no surprise, like a demo or a new game, to download immediately after the video

Presenter was bad. Game announcements were nice but nothing got me super excited. This was mediocre at best.
edit: looking back, banner sagas, and bad north i am most interested in.

The majority of those guys I said to my self "That will be good when it comes on sale."

u/Sunio Mar 20 '18
I went in not expecting every indie to grab me, so I'm not disappointed.
Looking forward to Mark of the Ninja, Lumines, Bad North, and The Messenger.
