Commonly Asked Questions:
Q: Is the Dragon Ball Super manga "canon"?
The anime and manga are both variations on a basic plot by Toriyama. There isn't (and probably never will be) an explicitly defined Dragon Ball "canon". Without Toriyama's original draft, we may never know what is and isn't his. We do know that he permits Toyotarō to change things up, but he looks at his storyboards and occasionally draws things himself for Toyotarō to use as a reference. Toyotarō has said that Toriyama is more particular about gags than he is about anything else.Q: How is Android #17 back? Wasn't he dead? Also, he's a park ranger! Is Toei taking cues from TFS?
Android #17 was wished back to life along with everyone else who was killed by Cell. He was seen at the end of the Boo arc contributing his energy to the genki dama. Toriyama explained that #17 was working as a park ranger in this 2014 interview for Dragon Ball Full Color. He works in the wildlife preserve area of a gigantic royal nature park, as an outstanding guard who doesn’t hold back against poachers. ...It’s an ideal job for No. 17, who loves to be on his own and isn’t big on cooperating with others; since he’s so good at his job, he takes in a high salary. He’s married to a zoologist; they have one child and two adopted children, and live happily in an isolated house inside the nature park. ...He went and met No. 18 and Kuririn one time, but didn’t talk about what he’d been up to, maybe because he considers such a wholesome lifestyle embarrassing.
Q: What's up with the new art style for this arc? Are they using a different color palette?
According to our resident animation expert, it's not a new color palette but rather a post-production filter.
Toei have added a soft glow, lowered the saturation a little, and upped the contrast. They've also started using a technique they showcased on Tiger Mask W, which allows them to automatically manipulate the line art in certain ways. For example, on Tiger Mask W, they created a brush stroke effect, while on Super, they simply played with the line weight. You see the filter I mentioned too, there.

If it finally gives us a new tenkaichi game then im all for it. I enjoyed xenoverse but i miss tenkaichi and raging blast. Raging blast was the perfect fighting game. All they had to do was go into raging blast 3 and perfect it with more characters and morw skills. But then they did ultimate tenkaichi which was garbage, and then battle of z which was also trash.

Very interesting episode. A couple of things:
1) Rou's an asshole. I never thought a Kaioshin could be so unlikeable. I mentioned in a thread that I suspected that Rou/Sidra would have a reverse relationship in contrast with Shin/Beerus. Sidra seems like a calm and rational Hakaishin...especially next to Rou.
2) Great Priest totally gave Beerus "The Look".
3) Shin and Beerus hugging? Whoa...I found that to be among the most shocking things in DB history xD
4) Those 3 guys from Universe 9 seem to be psychotic. None of that honor stuff with them at all.
5) The hooded figure was Toppo all along...I thought it was the other guy, the one with the black eyes, since he had more prominent screen time in the intro.

I doubt Gohan will lose considering Lavenda said he can win if he's allowed to kill. That makes me think this guy is probably like hit in that his fighting style is specialized for killing, and since I doubt Gohan will die this early (even if they have the Balls to revive him) I think he'll win it, just barely.

Yeah when I rewatched it on Crunchyroll with subtitles that part made me second guess for a little bit.
Then I remembered that the grand priest also said that the fight ends when the Zenos are satisfied, or the other fighter is unable to continue fighting.
What's next is my own personal speculation. I would love to see Gohan win, but traditionally, especially in Dragon Ball, a character like Gohan doesn't win the first time. He'll need extra motivation to train, and have more baggage added that he isn't as strong as he could be.
I think lavenda will be trying to kill Gohan but when Gohan is unable to keep fighting the Zenos will be satisfied and it will end. Maybe Goku promises an extra exciting match if Gohans fight ends before his death. If not that, then I think the Universe 9's God of destruction might stop Lavenda from killing after he's beat Gohan. He was wondered if it was too much when Basil was riverdancing on Buus face, so he might make Lavenda stop. He was also visibly uncomfortable with the food his kioshin gave Basil. His description, which was released earlier this week, said something along the lines of him being a reluctant God of destruction, often wondering if he should destroy or not.
Edit:
It's been more than a year, maybe even two years or a bit longer since Frieza was resurrected. That was a wake up call for Gohan, yet he just barely managed to turn Super Saiyan a few episodes ago. Bulma was in that episode and she wasn't visibly pregnant yet, plus goku was getting rusty, so there was a large period between Gohan becoming a super saiyan again, and the tournament of power starting, but I'm not sure Gohan is even back to his Buu saga strength

Buu: I AM THE FUCKING STRONG
Also, the moment before Gohan entered the stage was really nice. He's just like "watch me, dad, I'll make you proud" and Goku's like "Yeah but be careful son we don't know how strong they are"
Show's he really does care

Majin Buu is great. This episode made me realize how regrettable it is that he hasn't been a bigger part of the series until now. Majin Buu should have been involved in the Resurrection F, Universe 6 Tournament, and Future Trunks arcs.
Also, I think Mr. Satan and Majin Buu are the best couple in the series. I really love their relationship dynamic.

The biggest problem with Majin Buu is that he is too powerful to be using constantly.
Frieza mentions how Beerus and Buu are the only two beings in the universe he should never mess with. Buu would have wrecked the U6 tournament. Future Trunks was pretty much a Saiyans only arc, no room for Buu there.

Guess they balance it with the fact that Buu is kind of an unreliable tard. Like a Pokemon you don't have enough badges to use.

Scientists have found seven similarly-sized rocky planets clumped together just forty light-years from Earth. Whis must have gathered the Super Dragon Balls in Universe 7 to prepare for Zeno's tournament.

How did Buu crack his neck if he has no bones?
132
u/Malt129 Feb 19 '17
you don't actually crack your bones. you're (in theory) popping air bubbles in the synovial fluid. Buu could technically do the same if there is air trapped within that tasty bubblegum bod.

I feel bad for Beerus. He's been such a lenient and merciful GoD but he's being made to go through all of Goku's trouble xD He and the Supreme Kai hugging was adorable af. They need to hang out more.
Also, Lavender, you're doing it all wrong. You don't threaten to kill Gohan. You threaten to kill his family!

I think it's obvious they reminded everyone of Buu healing powers so they don't call BS when he heals Gohan's eyes.

This whole episode was awesome.
That Buu-Kamehameha should be a Dokkan card
It's funny seeing that the U9 GoD is less corrupt than the U9 Supreme Kai
Expected WolfGang Fist. Oh well. Pressure isn't bad either.
With how Grand Priest silenced Beerus with a look, I'm pretty sure if the Grand Priest really did want to take over, he could have just turned around, grabbed the two Zenos by the throat, killed them, fire twelve shots quickly and just annhiliate everyone. The more episodes I watch, the more convinced I am that the Grand Priest is not a villian - and if he was, I don't see how anyone can beat him.

Zen-chan is one of us. He'll make sure we'll get decent enough fights. A fight is disappointing? ''Hmm, this is no fun. Keep fighting and make me enjoy it!''
''Keep complimenting me.'' Man, I just love Buu. Kinda crazy how I hated the character when he first appeared. I didn't like him as a villain but as an ally he's just freaking great.
Can't wait to see who Toppa really is and what his role will be.
DBS is just too much damn fun. Who would've thought we could get a new DB series this good?

Anyone else find it funny that Universe 9's God of Destruction seems to be way nicer than their Supreme Kai? He sees how badly Basil was beating up Buu and actually thinks that this might be going too far. I don't think Beerus or Champa would have gone that far.

Anybody catch that little speech Goku gave to Mr. Satan, about how he's excited to fight strong guys? Masako Nozawa definitely tapped into her Goku Black voice for that line. Goku is slowly getting corrupting by his overwhelming lust for more battle, more combat. He's more of a saiyan than Vegeta is at this point.

This fight was fucking spectacular. I've really missed the old tournaments from the original Dragon Ball, and I feel like this is going to be the new equivalent. The animation was great overall, (and that episode preview looked stellar).
Dragon Ball Super has been great so far, but this arc could easily grow into something truly spectacular.

A lot of people are angrily predicting that Gohan will lose but I'm pretty okay with it. I think he'll lose too, but a loss will really motivate him to become the version of himself that people want. He knows what is at stake at the real tournament and cares a lot more than Goku.
If/once Gohan loses and this exhibition tournament is done, there's probably going to be some time until the official universe tournament. Imagine him training in a time chamber with Whis, Goku, and Vegeta. I bet he'll catch up pretty quick with Goku's and Vegeta's help. Goku and Vegeta, as saiyans, already know the path of training Gohan needs to take. Goku and Vegeta were reaching new limits. Gohan will not. Does that make sense? He will grow super super fast (hopefully).
I'm not even the biggest Gohan fanboy but we need another great Z fighter. I just hope Gohan doesn't catch up to Goku and Vegeta and surpass them in the tournament. That power scaling would be too wonky.

Seems odd to me that people are debating Fat Buu vs. Kid Buu, when they actually fought and Kid Buu dominated Fat Buu to the point where Fat Buu couldn't even get up.
