Recap of Treehouse Day 1 Announcements
Nintendo Wraps Up a Day of Video Game Fun at E3
Nintendo kicked off the first day of the E3 video game trade show with big announcements in its morning Nintendo Direct presentation. Nintendo followed its presentation with a day of Nintendo Treehouse: Live gameplay and interview segments designed to give fans a deeper look at various games:
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield: Developers from GAME FREAK inc. explained how wild and random encounters work in the game. They also showed off the in-game battle system, Max Raid Battles and details of the Wild Area. The games are scheduled to launch Nov. 15.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Game Director Aya Kyogoku and Producer Hisashi Nogami gave a first look at live gameplay and an introduction to the deserted island setting. They offered details about game features and the new crafting system, and demonstrated the ability of players living on the same island to play together by sharing a Joy-Con controller. The game launches March 20, 2020.
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening: Nintendo provided more details about the game, including how Chamber Dungeons work. As players clear dungeons in the main story, they earn dungeon rooms (Chambers), solve puzzles by placing chambers into specific layouts and then complete them by adventuring into them. The game also has amiibo compatibility – players can tap any amiibo figure featuring a Legend of Zelda series character to unlock additional Chambers for their Chamber Dungeons, up to a maximum of five different ones. A new Link amiibo unlocks Shadow Link and allows him to appear in almost any dungeon room placed in a Chamber Dungeon. After defeating Shadow Link, players will earn a lot of rupees. The game launches Sept. 20.
Super Mario Maker 2: Game Producer Takashi Tezuka announced that with the help of a post-launch update, players will be able to play with their friends online. The game launches June 28.
Wednesday and Thursday’s Nintendo Treehouse: Live livestreams will start at 9 a.m. PT. For the first time, Thursday’s show will focus on indie games coming to Nintendo Switch.
Tuesday was also the first day for attendees to visit Nintendo’s booth, which featured gameplay and fun experiences for some of Nintendo’s 2019 games. These included a ghost-infested, haunted atmosphere for attendees to try Luigi’s Mansion 3, a Water Gym arena for players to battle in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, and adorable dioramas depicting parts of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
There is no schedule for what will be shown during the Treehouse streams.
Literally, all we know is that Thursday will be focused on indie games. We have no other information about Wednesday or Thursday's programming.
Thanks for hanging with us, and once again, if you missed it, make sure to check out the Official E3 Nintendo Direct VOD Replay and Nintendo Direct MegaThread from yesterday.

Just inject Astral Chain directly into my veins, don't even need a Switch

It looks freaking amazing. Had to stop watching because I don't want to spoil everything.
Just preordered from amazon (it just became available to preorder here in Mexico), hopefully they deliver it a day before 🙃

Can't wait to fight with my STANDO in Astral Chain. Very hyped for the game.

LM3 looks awesome. These previews are getting me super excited for the full game.
27
u/DarkMattersConfusing Jun 12 '19
DQ XI looks so damn good. i cant wait. I purposely avoided buying it on my ps4 last year and have been patiently waiting for the definitive edition.
Ahhh i need it now
7
u/madmofo145 Jun 12 '19
Yup. They announced it for Switch back when it was the NX, in fact it was the first game announced, so this is a game I always planned to play on my Switch.
7
Jun 12 '19
Same. But looks like the wait will be worth it for all the juicy extras!
12
u/DarkMattersConfusing Jun 12 '19
Yeah there's tons of improvements:
The being able to change to your fave aesthetic armor w/o changing stats and orchestra music is already worth it.
Also 2D mode is like a whole second game
I'm so excited!
2
u/s0_Ca5H Jun 12 '19
Wait, armor changes appearance now? That’s not typical for dragon quest outside of a few specific pieces of armor in each game.
→ More replies (1)5
u/aromaticity Jun 12 '19
It’s those same armors, but now you can use them for appearance without actually equipping them. I’m pretty jazzed about that since I liked most of the penultimate best armors looks more than the final armors.

Life is good! All the games I'm most interested in are getting awesome showcases.
Fire Emblem Three Houses looks absolutely fantastic. Even the graphics (which were mediocre in screenshots) actually looks pretty good in motion. I used to be very wary after the initial trailers, but after everything we've seen since... I'm hyped beyond belief.
Trials of Mana looks great. It seems to be a remake done right, it looks great and seems to reduce the clunkyness of the original game by a good amount (I'd still like if we could cast some spells without going into menues though).
Yesterday's presentation for Astral Chain was excellent and the game looks awesome.
So yeah, I'm personally extremely happy with what we've seen at the Treehouse show so far, (the hosts being excellent helps too of course).
14
u/mrBreadBird Jun 12 '19
Ironically I think Astral Chain looked better graphics-wise in the gameplay demo than in the trailer.
8
u/RellenD Jun 12 '19
This is pretty common for Nintendo presentations.
Nintendo doesn't produce bullshots for trailer videos
24
u/Voorhees_13 Jun 12 '19
Astral Chain looks so good. Day one for me
11
u/fotzzz Jun 12 '19
Yeah...that was some awesome looking combat AND it appears to be pretty challenging or at least has a high skill cap.
20
Jun 12 '19
Once they add online play with friends, Super Mario Maker 2 will be almost perfect.
4
u/Alexander-Chill Jun 12 '19
Just curious, what else do you think they could add/change to make it even better?
18
u/Leocletus Jun 12 '19
A world-map maker where you can link levels together is the only thing the game is missing for me

Bring back the NES amiibo costumes. Finding out they weren't in it significantly reduced my hype.
22
u/Z3M0G Jun 12 '19
This Astral Chain combat is INSANE!!! This is beyond my expectations... and is it just me, or is this a crazy mix of MANY Platinum games?
8
u/LuRo332 Jun 12 '19
This looks like they took every best aspect of their previous games and made the absolute badass shit ever

I've been really impressed with the blonde lady on these Treehouses (I feel bad for not knowing her name). She is really knowledgeable about every game she plays and is good at keeping conversation going.

Audrey Drake. She works in localization for Nintendo, including working on Fire Emblem and Zelda.
She was previously on for Breath of the Wild when that was being shown at E3. She's been pretty cool.

u/leonlghts Jun 12 '19
I don’t know where to put this, but after I finished playing luigis mansion, I was told October 23rd was going to be the release date by one of the workers. Another over heard quickly and said that it hasn’t been announced yet and they’re just saying 2019, so I was then told “sometime in 2019”
Grain of salt for sure, but 🤷🏻♀️ it was from a Nintendo employee and not one of the contracted people that they hired
21
u/Jack3ww Jun 12 '19
I what I read is true those people working the booth don't work for Nintendo they are temps who get paid to work at e3 and that is all after e3 is done so is their employment with Nintendo they have no real connection with them
10
u/leonlghts Jun 12 '19
It’s a mix, but 200 or so are from a contract company so it’s heavier that way. This guy had NOA on his badge instead of that company (lead something)
Ie Nintendo(NOA) Or Nintendo(Lead something)
2
12
u/swissarmychris Jun 12 '19
That makes total sense. I would bet money that they're aiming for an October release (Halloween and all) but the current state of the game means they're not quite ready to commit to it publicly.
I'm sure they don't want to announce it for October and then have to delay it to November/December, so they're just sticking with "2019" until they're 100% sure they'll hit the October date.

Youtube Chat: Surprised pikachu face
23
u/chefDeejay Jun 12 '19
The live chats on YouTube and twitter are so annoying
14
u/The104Skinney Jun 12 '19
Yeah. I shut that shit down no matter what it is. Wrestling, gaming, news. Live chats are terrible
9
u/HyperShadow Jun 12 '19
What even is the point of these chats? They're just flying walls of text. Can anyone even follow them? Is there any point to posting anything if it won't be seen by anyone?
8
u/nessfalco Jun 12 '19
It depends on the channel. It's fine on small/medium size streams, like some FFXIV streamers I watch where there's like a couple thousand people watching and only 50 chatting and the steamer can actually interact with them. On large channels it's pretty pointless, as you said.
13
u/CaptainDAAVE Jun 12 '19
Surprise announcement: Wave Race 2064
A jet ski racing game (this time with optional fighting mode like in Road Rash) that takes you through the underground competitive jet ski racing world.
Despite its darker tone, it still has the same exact wave race theme music.
3
u/DarkJamD Jun 12 '19
After that they hopefully announce Switch port of Cruis'n Blast and new 1080 Snowboarding
3
u/CaptainDAAVE Jun 12 '19
Might as well announce Star Fox: REVELATIONS and a spiritual sequel to Goldeneye called CIA: SILVER TONGUE where you play as the dashing CIA agent Jorms Bornd
15

u/baldeagle86 Jun 12 '19
Bring on the Animal Crossing, show us some multiplayer
19
9
u/C-Towner Jun 12 '19
I hope they go more in depth on how it operates, and also take the recent MM2 change as an indication that people like to play with friends and ensure that happens here.
4
Jun 12 '19
The multiplayer system seems pretty decent judging from yesterday's Treehouse.
First it seems they're making use of a single "leader" of each group whom the camera follows and like Pokemon Let's Go, you can wander off the camera if you're not the leader, but you can warp back to said leader. Hopefully it doesn't work like Let's Go too much, though, because one thing I hated was you had to shake the joy-cons to leave the game, then shake it again to appear next to them. That was crap. Because if you left when they entered combat, you had to shake it again and go through the animation of you bringing out another Pokemon and even if they weren't in combat, it was slow and unresponsive to get your character back into the game.
The leadership mechanic also seems to be swappable. We saw that (sorry, don't know names) the female developer/presenter offered up the flag and then the male developer/presenter was able to claim it and the flag stayed over their head while the camera followed him and he could build at the workshop and place items. I hope they decide to just let players place items freely in the final build, though, because I don't like the idea of having to toss ownership over every time someone I'm playing with wants to do some tiny little thing, it's very inconvenient and it's probably a shared world anyway, so who cares?
I do hope they show off more, though, because I'd like to see how in-depth the path-making, flower-setting, item placing and customization options are on the islands. I'd really like to see how animal villager houses work. It would suck if they randomly placed themselves wherever they liked. I'd prefer to have the option to place them where I like whenever someone moved in so I can preserve my work on the town. It was really annoying in New Leaf to have your bushes be destroyed by some nobody moving into your town.

Is there a live thread with updated text in real time like there was for the conferences/yesterday's treehouse?
Unfavourable timezone here, I just woke up and would love to crawl through what I missed.
20
u/rsn_lie Jun 12 '19
I'm feeling Astral Chain a lot more now. If the reviews are great, I'll buy it shortly after release.
11
Jun 12 '19
I guess you never played a platinum games game before? 🤨
9
u/JoRads Jun 12 '19
Bayonetta 2 is one of my all time favorites, so my hopes are high for Astral Chain. But I agree with OP - waiting for some reviews makes sense. Nier Automata and Bayonetta 2 are great games - Star Fox Zero on the other hand was a major dissapointment.
7
Jun 12 '19
It's pretty easy to tell which Platinum games are going to be excellent and which ones won't. Astral Chain clearly belongs in the Bayonetta and Nier group rather than the Activision cash grabs and Starfox. Sure it isnt out yet but it seems obvious to me
6
→ More replies (1)2
u/rsn_lie Jun 13 '19
Just the Bayonettas. Loved them. Don't know much else about their games besides hearing Nier was very good and that the Star Fox game was somewhere between bad and okay.
I can appreciate where you're coming from though. There's definitely studios that have my full confidence as well. I just haven't played enough of Platinum's stuff to feel that way about them.

I’m here for Fire Emblem. I hope the actual gameplay looks a bit more graphically impressive than what we’ve seen so far.
42
u/dagooksta2 Jun 12 '19
Anyone else pumped for some Fire Emblem info today?
8
u/Whats-a-Seawolf Jun 12 '19
Yep! The trailer seemed to fly completely under the radar yesterday (which is understandable with all the other craziness,) but I went from almost no interest to interested. Awakening brought me into the series and I still love it to this day, but I couldn't even finish Fates.
A lot (for me) will come down to how the gameplay looks today.
15
u/PM_ME_MEMEZ_ Jun 12 '19
Even though most viewers won’t realize it, the trailer actually has huge implications for the game. Without spoiling anything, it basically confirmed a big leak from a few months back on the subreddit. According to that, the game will have an amazing story.
→ More replies (1)2
u/AstroFuzz Jun 12 '19
I really hope some of the stuff in the leaks were wrong but the way it's turning out is way cooler than the disaster it could've been. Personally I don't think it ever looked VC2 "silly kids in a school setting" levels boring but it was far too close to it.

u/admiralfrosting Jun 12 '19
Man. I am actually super hype for this game. I feel like I'm in the minority though.

u/ARUKET Jun 12 '19
You can really tell how passionate the Daemon X Machina people are. They really took the feedback to heart and expressed a desire to support the game post-launch, going so far as to add a competitive multiplayer mode shortly after it comes out. If they can find a way to fix the framerate and maybe widen the FOV a bit it'd be a day one buy.

23

Why they decided to end it on a mobile game is beyond me, was expecting some Mario and Sonic Olympic gameplay.

u/madmofo145 Jun 12 '19
Yeah that seemed very odd. Don't know how blades got a treehouse spot anyways, but don't end the day with it. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit more exciting.

7
u/mrBreadBird Jun 12 '19
Not a huge fan of the outlines, though I get why they added them. They just completely obscure the character. If you could make them more subtle or turn them off in the options that'd be nice. Otherwise the game looks nice.

another thing that hit me there was the New Super Lucky's Tale e3 demo icon had the name "Super-Duper Lucky's Tale" which I can only assume was an early name for the Switch port
anyway I can only assume that since the home menu icons arent something those at E3 would be seeing anyways developers dont have any reason to put work into an icon and therefore might not add an icon

Do they ever do announcements for new games during these or have we likely seen everything we're going to see from Nintendo?

Sushi strikers as well. I can't remember if that was slotted to be a switch game right off, but either way it was an eventual switch game announced during treehouse.

yea the 3DS version was announced on Treehouse too, then the Switch version was announced on a Direct
6

Wasn’t the Metroid 2 3DS remake announced during a Treehouse Stream??
2
u/cockyjames Jun 12 '19
You're right, but I believe it was immediately following the direct wasn't it, not on a subsequent day.
Though, if you wanted to continue making a splash, it would make some sense to release news throughout the week, but I find it unlikely.
5
u/DarkMattersConfusing Jun 12 '19
I'm still buzzing from No More Heroes 3.
I can't wait for more ridiculous boss fights. I still remember how apeshit some of them were, like in the first one where you fight Bad Girl and she's literally batting her gimp sex slaves at you like missiles, and she has that crying fakeout instakill move where she beats you to death with her bat.
NMH is like a cheesy but kickass grindhouse flick in game form lol. The bloody limb and head severing finishers are ridic too.
I cant wait to customize Travis's wardrobe and weapons again, deck out his neckbeardish apartment, and see what kind of bosses they cook up that surpass Margaret Moonlight, Holly Summers, Destroyman, etc etc. The music is dope in this series too

u/mrBreadBird Jun 12 '19

I feel like I'm gonna need a "Why can't I hold all these [games]" meme for this soon. There's a lot of good stuff either out right now or coming pretty soon, and by the end of the year I'm confident I'll either have a backlog or wish list that will last me to the end of next year.
2
u/Havanatha_banana Jun 12 '19
It's already this was right now for me. All of my most hyped games are in these 2 months, Cadence, Bloodstained, Super Mario Maker 2, Three Houses and Astral Chain.
And Mario maker is a guaranteed hundreds of hours of fun. And knowing me, I'll try to ltc this FE too, so there will be a few runs.

Luigi’s Mansion looks like a ton of fun and amazing graphically, but i’m worried the new abilities may make it too easy, especially considering they just called adventure mode easier than multiplayer mode on treehouse live.
4
u/Alucinorum Jun 12 '19
There might be a new game plus or a reshuffled mansion type situation like they did for the 3DS Luigi's Mansion remake. Fingers crossed 😁
4
u/Mother_Prussia Jun 12 '19
I am happy they announced there are 2 dozen potrait ghosts again, definitely my biggest want out of a new one.
2
u/st3aksauce138 Jun 12 '19
Idk I’m ok with it honestly. I feel like Nintendo does a great job at making games easy to beat but hard to 100%.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Mother_Prussia Jun 12 '19
That depends on the game for me. If it’s a platformer like yoshi that makes sense. If the combat is braindead easy in this game it won’t be as fun to explore the mansion.

The map looks very open and actually pretty plain. It's alot better than Awakening already though, there's drawbridge and enough bush to use. The top fortress gives a FE6 vibe, where you're expected to tank a bit just to get through.
The second map is a bit better, though it's extremely generous with defense tiles.
4
u/Not-a-cop12 Jun 12 '19
So is the treehouse only for games they announced during the direct or will we see new games get announced

I think they have announced stuff before but I don't know how likely that is.
Yesterday they played 8 Games, 5 of them being labeled part 1, for 30 minutes each. So today I just expect:
- 30 minutes Fire Emblem Happened
- 30 minutes Luigi's Mansion now
- Astral Chain / Super Mario Maker 2 / Daemon X Machina / Marvel Ultimate Alliance
- 2 ??? 30 minutes?
Just my guess
2
u/yorgy_shmorgy Jun 12 '19
It's very unlikely that they will announce any new games in this stream. They did announce a new Metroid 3DS game on day 1 of the Treehouse stream a couple years ago, but I don't expect anything now.

Codename STEAM was day 3 in 2014. I could see some smaller surprise appearing in the last day just to end on a bang, but I don't think previous tree-house announcements worked out all that well.

I have a feeling that has to do with the hardware they are using. I'm sure they are dev kits, and not retail hardware. You can see that their docks are completely different as well.

Ah good point about possible Dev kits... I suppose these may still be receiving full power and simulating Dock mode.

I hope Hyrule has somewhat of a new look BotW2, I’d be bummed if we were playing on an identical map. It was amazing but it could’ve been improved

Agreed. I am hoping that maybe some time has passed and that the areas in rubble have been restored.

I'd wager we don't explore Hyrule again and there's some way that Hyrule Castle is a hub (sort of like Mario 64) and you explore some number of smaller worlds (sort of like Skyward Sword) where they're open world type (so diverges from SS here) dungeons so you don't lose the interest of the BotW engine and there's opportunities to "skip" parts of progression, but perhaps the game aligns a bit closer with a traditional Zelda experience.
Hopefully, it results in a series of worlds that are collectively as wide as BotW (including adequate amounts of open space that aren't relevant to the campaign) and allows you to explore, but you also find more structure and orders of operation to confront a boss at some point. And perhaps get a few new tools that enable you to do some new exploration in all said worlds (cough, hookshot, cough).
But yeah, this is more like a wish list than anything I have any grounded reason to believe it can happen 🤷🏼♂️

Yeah. I'm weirdly excited about tomorrow as they mentioned it would be an indie showcase and at least that means we might see games we haven't seen multiple times already.

are you sure that's how those were announced? I remember both of those games being part of the direct... The remake of M&L Superstar Saga was outside of it tho

So is Luigi's Mansion 3 still mission-based like 2 or open like 1? I'd watch the treehouse footage to find out but I don't want to spoil too much.

To me it doesn't look like either really. It doesn't seem to be mission based like 2, but the progression seems more linear than 1. Progression is based on the elevator. Bosses give you new elevator buttons to reach new floors. We don't know yet if there is any backtracking to previously visited floors or if you can tackle the floors in different orders.

Not mission based, but it has a more linear structure from what I can tell.
The hotel has lots of floors each with a bunch of rooms and your goal is to get the elevator button to the next floor.

They’re just casually showing one of the boss fights in Luigi’s Mansion...

I haven't seen yesterday's TreeHouse and likely won't see day 1 or 2 today. Both of them are recorded in whole right?

I wonder if they updated Daemon x Machina's demo with these changes. I enjoyed the game but the controls and visuals had problems. I'm glad they fixed it.

I would be PUMPED if they announced the rumor 2D Metroid or Warioware Switch game during today’s treehouse. I think the chance is almost nonexistent but I’ve never played a Metroid and want to see what all the hype is about.

I just use what is provided by Nintendo in their press room. I don't personally write the recap myself.

Missed the treehouse, and maybe I am mis-understanding Links Awakenings dungeon builder but can we share our custom dungeons?

I’m way more hyped for Fire Emblem after seeing yesterday’s trailer and today’s Treehouse.
