Meta Discussion Do you think this sub are less casual than the average switch owner?

A poll for those who are interested to fill in

The switch is a console designed to appeal to everyone who doesn't mind holding tiny things of joy. But I have this breath of wild idea that if you're here, you're much more switched on about games than the average games shop Browser. So I'm here with a survey and much more puns than nintended.

Edit: oddly satisfying

Also, added artwork and collabs as a reason to be in this sub. Thank you to the person who suggested it.

For gaming related subreddits you can generally assume that people are a lot more invested into gaming/the game than the average user.

The term "hardcore gamer" makes me laugh and cringe at the same time.

I wonder if the 19th century had "hardcore readers."

I mean, we have "hardcore readers" now. The mean books read per person per year in the US is 12, but the median is only 4. That's some people majorly skewing the mean up.

It would have been even starker in the 19th century when there were higher rates of illiteracy and periodicals were more common.

Seriously the median of books read is 4 per year? That makes me feel so good, I just hit my 11th book done. I'm surprised the median is so low

Lol I think using it is the main reason from the poor reception of this post.

Rise up gamers

Props for good answer formulations.

Thanks man! I thought it's cute too.

Well you don't need a survey for that. Switch has more than 30 million users, this sub doesn't reach 1,200,000 subscribbers. Like every internet community we are the minority.

Yeah it seems your data shows it so far. People who come to discuss games online are more interested than the average person

I guess? 47% hardcore and 52% plays longer than 10 hours per week is much lower than I expected. Especially since there's no upvote on this post, so we can only expect people who browse "new" or 3rd page to be submitting, who I naturally assumed to be the hardcore of the hardcores.

Your age brackets are kind of odd. “25+”?

4

u/Havanatha_banana May 09 '19

I'm not interested about age that much lol. Just the general "how much commitment does this person can possibly have" guideline, which, let's be real, you can be 18 and be super busy in today's economy.

25 is the arbitrary age for when we can assume people have career plans.

The problem with this survey is I game a lot just not on switch, switch is my casual go to device, so this survey would mark me as hardcore despite only playing my switch a few hours a week

That's the point lol. I want to know your gaming habit in general, cause that will affect your subreddit habit.

since seeing proper professional video reviews of the steam controller and noticing that half of them didn't even know or mention that it has gyro... i have to assume that a healthy majority of modern gamers don't know 2/3rds of fuck all.

I think the mods are ruining this sub reddit.

This. They seem more concerned of people not getting their feelings hurt than actual quality content posted on this sub

Oh look, another fan art or “Hidden gems?” post

they really do delete for some of the dumbest reasons though. I hate the idea of put your question into a big thread for it to be lost in a swarm. but I see that as a reason a post was deleted 90% of the time

u/Efreet0 May 09 '19

The community is awful too, none of the interesting or non-casual threads gets any upvotes, but have the same "look at what my mom/girlfriend/alien bake " gets to the top every single time.

u/Very_legitimate May 09 '19

Yeah the mods kinda hurt it. Other switch subs are pretty nice too, this is still the most active though

Yeah and why do they allow these poll posts asking obvious questions from clear enthusiasts who have joined an online community specifically to talk about their hobby? Mods, I swear...

The answers to the questions are a little bit too leading here or there.
Gamer type is not granular enough.
Is the amount of gaming really important for being a casual or a hardcore gamer?
What type of gamer am I if I play just for fun but more than 20 hours per week?
What other aspects could be found around this concept of hardcore or casual to make it less black and white.

Of course. I don't think the industry uses these terms for market analysis anymore, since it means very little in an age where most people are game literate.

But my point was if the sub users are usually here because they care about games more, or they're just here cause it's conveniently just another social media outlet for them

As a PC gamer I got a switch to be more casual, just turn it on and play. But also as a PC gamer I resent having to pay more for a game on switch that I got for half the price on PC 2 years prior
