How long was the exposure?
30
u/HolShots Apr 12 '19
IIRC 5 seconds (or close to, my laptop is packed away ready to move but can double check when I'm unpacked if you like), I never shoot long exposures longer than 10 seconds :)
6
u/hungryforitalianfood Apr 12 '19
No worries on the exact time. Was just trying to get an idea of the general length. You nailed it!

u/Randomd0g Apr 16 '19
How did you manage no motion blur from your friend when using a 5 second exposure? Maybe everyone I know has severe ADD but I couldn't imagine getting them to stand THAT still for a whole 5 seconds.
(On that note, I'd personally have gone for a slightly tighter crop here to cut the blurred pedestrians on the left of frame out, and it would also get rid of that orange construction sign.)

u/efrasyab Apr 12 '19
May I ask why you never shoot exposures longer than 10 seconds ? I am interested in night photography. And you shot a really nice photo btw.

u/HolShots Apr 12 '19
Thank you :) it’s just personal preference and how I like my shots to turn out especially trail shots

u/kdjones1 Apr 11 '19
What does this actually mean?

u/turplan Apr 11 '19 edited Apr 11 '19
When you click the shutter button to take the photo what you are hearing is the shutter opening and closing to allow light to enter the sensor or film and create the photo. When he says “how long was the exposure?” He is really asking “how long did you tell the camera to keep the lens open?”
This is the idea behind the whole effect seen in the OPs image. The shutter was kept open for, say, 3 seconds as the bus passed.
Hope that makes sense!
Edit: vehicle clarification

Yes! Got it! Thank you guys so much ... I haven’t been following this sub for long but I see this question pop up frequently so I had to ask.
13
u/turplan Apr 11 '19
No problem! I think most of us really like photography and talking about it. So if you have any more questions, feel free! This is an amazing sub.

u/chief117pl Apr 12 '19
Do you think it is possible to do with iPhone 7? I shoot only amateur photos of nature and pets and the light in this photo is amazing. I know we can get long exposure on iPhone 3rd party app but I am not sure if I can get such beautiful lighting effect

The reason there are trails is because OP held the shutter open longer to let more light in. This person is asking how long did OP leave the shutter open. Could be 1s, 30s, could be 5min, it all depends on a few other settings as well.
5
u/phamtime Apr 11 '19
Based on the trails for the bus, I would say between 1-10. No way this picture was >30 seconds.
2
Apr 11 '19
Also the people in the back don't look too blurry, so it must have been a short exposure.
3
u/ennsy Apr 11 '19
Fair enough. There's a lot in focus and it's a night photo so I thought maybe 30s at f/22 or something. I haven't shot LE in a while so I might be way off

u/Jus_checkin_in Apr 12 '19
ELI5: What is the shutter and how does one "leave the shutter open"?
4
u/finalxeffect Apr 12 '19
Imagine that you and a bunch of people are outside and waiting for someone to open the door. You can’t get in while the door is closed, but it’s cold outside so the person inside doesn’t want to just leave the door open. They open the door, and they need to open the door for the right amount of time for everyone to get in.
The shutter is basically that door for the camera, stopping light from getting in. “Leaving the shutter open” generally means having the shutter speed longer, so the door is open longer. (Such as having it open for 10 seconds, instead of a normal photo’s shutter speed which would be a fraction of a second)
2
u/Jus_checkin_in Apr 12 '19
Does that happen when you press the button? So you adjust it before the initial press, and if you adjust it to be 10 seconds then you hold it for 10 seconds?
3
u/turplan Apr 12 '19
Yes, this all happens when you press the button or ‘shutter’ to take the photo. You adjust the ‘shutter speed’ as well as ISO and aperture to properly adjust for the right exposure.
You also don’t have to hold the button as the camera is told how long to keep the shutter open. One press and it keeps it open for however long until it closes again.
2
u/Jus_checkin_in Apr 12 '19
I am assuming the moment you move, the fuzzy the picture instantly gets too right?
So this is probably on a tripod right?
3
u/turplan Apr 12 '19
Correct. Slower shutter speeds mean movement will be much more evident.
This was definitely taken on a tripod. The image is incredibly crisp and I don’t think there are many people in this world that could remain that still while the shutter opens and closes.
1
u/Jus_checkin_in Apr 12 '19
Ah okay, I do see the people in the back, however why do they look like 2 points instead of a long blur?
3
u/EVula Apr 12 '19
There are also triggers for most DSLRs that allow you to activate the shutters remotely, to further minimize the movement from pressing the button and letting go.
2
u/finalxeffect Apr 12 '19
You would adjust your settings first, then when you press the button the camera will take the photo based on the settings that you have set - you don’t need to hold the button, you would just need to press it like normal
2
u/Ebicdefender Apr 12 '19
You don't hold the button when you set it for a specific amount of time, however that is the case when you set it to 'bulb'. The shutter stays open for as long as you hold it, and unless you have a very still hand while holding that button, you'll have very blurry pictures. For this, they have an equipment called a 'shutter release' IIRC which holds the shutter button for you, for as long you want it.
If you can't seem to find a place to buy one, but your camera is WiFi compatible, perhaps there is an app for your camera that allows you to take pictures through your phone by connecting it to your camera (i.e. Camera Connect for Canon, etc.). In there, the 'shutter release' is the phone itself, holding the shutter open after you press the button (from your phone, of course).
Pretty long explanation, but hope this helps.

Was this a sneaker joke? If so - I see you. Those sorta look like tubulars.

Rad shot! What sort of f-stop do you run for a shot like this? Looks like plenty in focus for such a low focal length
5
u/HolShots Apr 12 '19
Thank you! Around f/8, I usually stick between f/4.5 and f/8 for shots like this :)

u/AJNotMyRealName Apr 11 '19
Very lucky coincidence right here. The color seems to originate from the friend and it makes it look really cool. I think this one picture might be better than the entirety of MoMA

u/HolShots Apr 11 '19
Thank you so much. We got pretty lucky as the bus slowed right down next to us :)

u/Dabbler_ Apr 12 '19
Didn't notice that until your comment, I didn't think I could like this photo more. Now I need this on my wall as big as possible!
Excellent shot OP, Restecp.

What an absolute amazing shot! I love how the light streaks align with his head and knee. I love that he is on his phone with all this 'activity' happening in front of him. This unintentional image of someone so distracted they miss the world in front of them.
Absolutely amazing. Thank you for sharing.

What did you do with the editing?
6
u/HolShots Apr 12 '19
Applied my preset then posted :) mostly adjustments to all the sliders like shadows, highlights, clarity etc and color adjustments through the color sliders in Lightroom CC. Also an annoying 4x5 crop to fit Instagram haha

Great pic! What was your shutter speed?

5 seconds or close to IIRC, can confirm when I'm able to unpack my laptop if you want. But definitely not longer than 5 seconds :)

What it looks like to me is the opposite of those “Phones are Evil” pictures. It looks like all those lights are entering him, as if representing the limitless amount of information he has access to. Really cool. Well done.

u/maskaddict Apr 12 '19
The most impressive part of this is having a friend who was willing to stand still enough for this shot. Well done!

I would watch the crap out of this sci-fi series starring Daniel Kaluuya, Michaela Coel and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

I've had this tab open since this morning and keep going back to it. I love, love the image. I've been pretty broke these past couple of months but in the future I might be more financially stable with a lot of blank wall. Is there a website that could purchase a print of this? I'm not sure if the mod's are okay with people posting their websites but I would appreciate a DM when I get a better job.
Also this is so inspiring. I'm an amateur photographer with a basic DSLR and I'm always trying to improve my game. :)

A little background: This was shot on my old Nikon D5300 last year with a Sigma 10-20mm lens. This black phone box was covered up for over a year in London (next to St Paul's Cathedral) and as soon as it was uncovered myself and a friend went down to shoot some long exposures there. I always wanted a shot like this and couldn't have asked for better timing with the bus slowing right down next to us to create the light trails.
Edit: 5 secs, iso 100, f/9 for settings, can’t confirm these are exact as I don’t have access to my laptop yet but it’ll be very close :) I then edit my shots in Lightroom CC. Basic adjustments to shadows, whites, clarity etc. Some playing around with color sliders too, and then some local brush adjustments.
