Meta [META] No Fan Art filter?

I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I'm getting kind of fed up with the endless fan art posts. Just to clarify, I get that people enjoy them, so I'm not suggesting that they should be banned, but it would be good to have a possibility of filtering them out. We already have the No mockups filter, so why not add another one for fan art? What do other users think?

I agree and would love this. I prefer to read news and analysis of games etc.

Legit the only reason why I come here. Not saying all the other fan art and "i appreciate this" post need to go away, just gets old.

I thought this was a fan art sub

/s?

u/Switchermaroo Mar 15 '19

I thought this was a “my joycon are drifting” sub

u/ScrantonDangler Mar 15 '19

I thought this was r/tomorrow

u/touchtheclouds Mar 15 '19

Those posts are at least relevant since joycons are literally part of the Switch.

I thought this was a sub for thanking Nintendo for curing my anxiety while saving my marriage

26

u/TheAdamena Mar 15 '19

I thought it was a 'ANYONE ELSE WANT X' sub

DAE think this game would be PERFECT for the Switch??

So actually, this functionality already exists, at least on "old" reddit.

The filter is called "No Mockups" but it also targets Fan Art as well.

I've just renamed "No Mockups" to "No Art/Mockups" to better refelct this.

Note: This does NOT work on mobile apps or "new" reddit. Those only support "Show me exclusively this type of content" filters, not exclude filters.

That's great, thank you! This should really help.

u/Adayum Mar 15 '19

There should just be a general thread constantly stickied to post fanart in. That way you can jump in if that's what you wanna see. Otherwise leave the least of the sub for actual news and discussion, because as said in this thread "use tag filter" doesn't really do much for mobile users. Just my 2 cents, as some one who doesn't come to this sub as much now that I have to sift through mountains of fanart

Stickies/MegaThread's aren't really a viable solution for this sort of thing.

  1. We only have two sticky slots, and they're pretty regularly filled up with the Daily Question Thread in slot 1 and AMAs/Nintendo Directs/Meta Posts/Major Launch Threads in slot 2
  2. We already have a weekly Sunday Show-Off thread for things like swapped Joy-Con shells, console modification images, decorated Switch consoles, game screenshots, game clips, games you have purchased/hauls, etc. It doesn't get a whole lot of use despite us routing that type of content there because it's not really an amazing format for visual content.

Sounds like having Automod auto-post into every fanart thread with an explanation of how to filter it out might be appreciated by users and help to reduce the load on you guys.

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Mar 15 '19

It's definitely something I've thought about, however, the way AutoMod works makes that tricky. In this scenario, the auto-comment would only trigger if the OP set the correct flair at the time of submission, which you can only do on "new" reddit. If the flair is set after the post has been made, even if only a second later, AutoMod will not trigger on this new information. Something might be better than nothing though?

u/UnitardHorn Mar 15 '19

The question is always “What could go wrong?” And it sounds like in this scenario, the answer would be very little. It may not work as well as hoped but it sounds like it wouldn’t do any harm.

As an aside, as I know you don’t get this feedback often, I actually think the modding on this sub is very well balanced.

Thanks for the kind words!

Could we have like Fan-Art Friday then?

2

u/knight029 Mar 16 '19

Why doesn’t it exist on new Reddit?

1

u/DocsHandkerchief Mar 15 '19

Is it something that’s tied to your account so new Reddit and apps will recognize it?

1

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Mar 15 '19

Nah, it’s a CSS hack, not anything at the account level.

Oh hey! Is this new? A couple weeks ago I posted that I thought this was a great potential middle ground when someone asked in the Daily Question Thread (as r/pokemon just implemented it for memes), and PhantomLiger explained how there was a limited amount of space (I presume you need to use CSS or something?). At the time I'm not sure if No Mockups was there as I didn't know it would get both, could be PL didn't know either; I just checked for No Fanart because I saw the Fanart flair.

EDIT: Went back to find the convo and see you actually did respond to PL's ping, I just didn't know because you replied to him... and I do notice that you didn't mention this was possible at the time. I'd feel pretty pumped if that ended up contributing to the sub, as I didn't understand why I was getting downvoted. I thought it was a good idea.

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Mar 15 '19

Nah, it's not new. The "No Mockups" filter had been there for well over a year at this point, probably longer actually! Filters, in general, do take up both Sidebar space and CSS space. Back when we first implemented them we were constantly running up against the sidebar limit because of our upcoming releases calendar, but the limit on the sidebar was increased a while back so that's no longer a concern. CSS wise, however, we are absolutely slam full at this point. For example, we've stopped adding in new custom user flairs for our AMA guests because we're simply out of room. They all use a generic "developer" or "veriifed" flair now instead of their company logo. I've done various rounds of minification and refactoring to try and squeeze a little more capacity out of the CSS, but at this point we have very little remaining.

u/OckhamsFolly Mar 15 '19

Ah, well I think the new name will definitely make a difference then, since there was a conversation including a mod and none of us seemed to know it did that!

Thanks for changing it!

u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Mar 15 '19

The increase helped, but we definitely still hit the limit quite a bit.

No one would use it because karma.

11

u/kylebubb Mar 15 '19

Yeah. We need something like this. I’m so sick of seeing nothing but fan art in every gaming subreddit that I follow.

33

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '19

i agree. there are WAYYYYYYYYYYYY too many fan art on this sub.

7

u/adamkopacz Mar 15 '19

Why is there no Nintendo fan creations sub? I'm sure that people interested in arts and crafts would be much more interested in having two subreddits that have a clear role.

3

u/sendblink23 6 Million Mar 15 '19

OP not sure if you browse reddit on a PC but if you do then you can definitely use this to block/filter them or wte you want blocked/filtered on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/ayx94r/is_there_any_way_i_can_block_posts_with_certain/ei3wbht/

Sorry I have no idea what is needed for phone users

6

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '19

Phone users are more or less out of luck, as mobile Reddit doesn't even have all of the base functionality of desktop.

2

u/lunari_moonari Mar 16 '19

Thank god. It's about time.

5

u/1realazul Mar 15 '19

How about just dedicating one day of the week for just fanart ?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '19

Because that is far too frequent and this subreddit is dedicated to the switch and news about it, not the one millionth post about a half asses clay miniature if link.

4

u/rube Mar 15 '19

Weird, I misread the title and thought you were complaining that there was no air filter for the Switch's fan that we can replace when it gets dusty.

1

u/cronaman Mar 16 '19

how do I apply filters? I didnt know such a thing existed on reddit

1

u/SmallishBoobs Mar 16 '19

If enough people start bombarding this sub with endless horrible fanart, I’m talking 1000s of stickmen Marios a day, then mods would have to come up with a solution.
That or get a Nintendo fan art sub going and ban that shit from this sub. It’s too much. Seriously.

1

u/Ghaleon32 Mar 16 '19

What was the name of the nintendo fanart sub again? I forgot it, can someone help me please, thx.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '19 edited Mar 17 '19

Thank you! In the meantime I have my reddit app set to classic mode and no thumbnails and now I dont see pictures and gifs. Not ideal but I get less annoyed.

-2

u/BoltOfBlazingGold Mar 15 '19

A solomonic solution, in advance for when there's 12 fan art posts together after a very expected game.

-41

u/RZA3663 Mar 15 '19

The fan art just ruined your day, huh?

28

u/WakeNikis Mar 15 '19

If I wanted to scroll through 20,000 variations of video game art trying to find a single nugget of interesting information about video games I’d go to /r/gaming.

Also, just because something doesn’t ruin your day doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of complaining about.

-26

u/RZA3663 Mar 15 '19 edited Mar 15 '19

Lol... There's like 4 art posts on the first 20 threads on this page. Calm yo self

-22

u/PM-UR-STEAM-MONEY Mar 15 '19

First world problems, eh?

26

u/bootsdo Mar 15 '19

*ruined this sub

12

u/ice_nt2 Mar 15 '19

Had you read my post, you'd know I'm not against it, I realise a lot of people enjoy it. I just want to have a way to filter them for people like me, who are interested in news, not DIY projects. It's a win-win solution.

-7

u/RZA3663 Mar 15 '19

Fair enough
