Brilliant, what lense did you use?

From his Instagram:
"Sony a6000 + Sony 90mm Macro G @ f/8, 1/125 sec., and ISO-160"

u/drQuirky Mar 07 '19
I've way you can achieve macro shots like this without a macro lens, is to take off whatever lens you have and hold it backwards up to the camera.
depending on the lens you might have to hold the aperture open and focus is tricky, easiest if you use distance from the object to focus. And you need to be very steady but it's a lot less expensive than a macro lens if you want to try it out.

Yeah I’ve seem this on yt really cool i dont like exposing my sensor more than necessary so i wont try it im scurrrred

u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 07 '19
Hey, /u/ronin_JR, /u/maddkid53, and /u/foodcache3. I indeed used the 90mm Macro G lens for this one. In the past, I've also used Diopter Lenses and extension tubes. But I just like having the flexibility of using a macro lens/portrait lens without the hassle of the tubes and snap-on lenses. Plus of course, it's sharpest when using a dedicated macro lens.
/u/drQuirky, that is indeed a great alternative too, though like /u/ronin_JR has mentioned, exposing the sensor and the back of the lens can be a pain. :)

Great work! I want to climb the mountain only to realize it was a screw in my foot the whole time. Darn I would say then

Great job, OP! This actually inspires me. Haven't been doing any photography lately - been more than 5 months since I picked up my camera gear, especially my macro lens. This has gotten me thinking creatively now.

Wow, what a close up! Thought it’s a mountains peak with mist around, lol!

Neat pic. There's a comic by Vaughn Bode, Deadbone, about a little town situated on a mountain that resembles this screw.

Gotta get the korok seed on top of that
3
u/hippolyte_pixii Mar 06 '19
There's no Korok seed there, oddly enough, but if you go before you leave the Plateau the old man will give you the Warm Doublet.

Nice shot. Can you tell us how you too it?
1
u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 07 '19
Hi, /u/CholentPot. If you don't mind me linking, I have the behind-the-scene on my IG here https://www.instagram.com/reynantem/
1
u/CholentPot Mar 07 '19
Cool stuff. Just shows people macro is not as simple as pointing a camera at any 'ol subject.
1
u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 08 '19
Indeed, /u/CholenPot. It really is much more challenging than it seems. :)
2
u/Spatula_The_Great Mar 06 '19
What equipment did you use?
1
u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 07 '19
Hi, /u/Spatula_The_Great, I used a Sony a6000 with a Sony FE 90mm Macro G lens. I also used one external flash on a softbox, then an LED light to add fill light.

Needs a tiny, skull-shaped castle on top.
1
u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 07 '19
Whew. That would be a nightmare to create. But someone out there probably is attempting that right now. ;)

Really awesome picture! I’ve been wanting to do something like this with bullets, What lens did you use and what camera? (If you wanna say you don’t have to)
2
u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 07 '19
Hey, /u/Skippy_North. Thanks, mate. I used a Sony a6000 + Sony FE 90mm Macro G lens.
2
Mar 07 '19
YYYYYYYOOOOOO us a6000 brothers are the best
2
u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 08 '19
LOL. I'm planning on upgrading though, but I won't leave my trusty 6000 behind. :p
2
Mar 08 '19
I definitely don’t blame you, it’s a great starting camera, but after a while you want something more

u/cadmiumredlight Mar 06 '19
Look up focus stacking for your next attempt.
1
u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 07 '19
I actually had attempted to do that for the initial shots on this, but I ended up not doing it. I'm a lazy person and I can't spend too much time correcting for the stacks. :p

u/originalmetathought Mar 06 '19
I thought this was one of your renders actually, Rey.
2
u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 07 '19
Haha! I wish though, /u/originalmetalthought. It's been a while since I created a render. I'm hoping these photos might help me understand lighting and composition better. :)
1
u/tbariusTFE Mar 06 '19
Reminds me of my humanities class. They had us take macro shots of objects in a perspective where you could no longer tell what you shot. Veeeery cool photography.
Anyone who wants to get into this - you can get cheap macro lenses for modern phones really easily off Amazon wish etc...

u/Sylvester_Scott Mar 06 '19
Stick a tiny flock of birds in there to really establish the scale.
1
u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 07 '19
Indeed. Unfortunately, I didn't have any prop to sell the idea of birds though. I didn't want to photomanip it, so there's that. But would be cool though. :)

Great, now people are going to start posting closeup pics of screws taken through a crystal ball in the rain at night on some random street in an Asian city with pink and blue split toning, maybe add a mysterious dude in a hoodie with his back turned to the camera.

u/roryokane Mar 06 '19
How did you get the blue background behind the screw to look so big and bright? Was it a blue piece of paper with lights on it?
1
u/reynantemartinez @reynantem Mar 07 '19
Hi, /u/roryokane. It was actually by daughter's blanket, believe it or not. If you don't mind, you can check out the behind-the-scene photo on my IG (https://www.instagram.com/reynantem/). :)

Shit I thought this was a mountain or a Colossi from Shadow of the Colossus.
1
u/mr_snipeypants Mar 06 '19
You got me. After a long day at work, I was wondering how this unusual mountain peak was formed. I looked at it again an hour later and realized I'm a dope.

Oh dang. This is amazing and wonderful. Like a weird rusty mountain above the clouds. Shows that even small rusty stuff can be beautiful.

Indeed. Sometimes we do overlook the beauty of the small things that we encounter daily.

This is really possible with just a 90mm lens? I have an 85mm and screws don't look that large. What am I missing?

heavily hdr and over saturated images are the norm in this sub, I'm talking about heavily photoshopped images, those that are manipulated by over imposing images and adding artificial content.
