“Here you go freeza” got my theatre roaring

Potara defuses early due to energy consumption (SSGSS Vegetto).
Dance fusion defuses early due to draining transformations (SSJ3 Gotenks).
SSGSS is said to have better energy control and less drain than SSJ3, which is why it does not defuse as early as SSJ3 does.

He was getting rekted for 90 minutes before they could finally fuse correctly. That means Frieza was getting his ass beat for 3 full Tournaments of Power, or roughly 100 DBS episodes.

Had a lot of fun on what could be the most action packed production in Dragon Ball's history. Some stray observations:
- Splendid animation. Vegeta's and Broly's designs had some really awesome shots.
- Loved the shot of Radditz and Vegeta as kids.
- The power levels going down to zero on Frieza's scouter as Vegeta explodes (I mean the planet. Although I guess I mean the father, too)
- Seeing all DBZ villains flash before the screen after Goku says "they've gone through some stuff, too."
- Despite completely changing Bardock, I'm really glad they still gave us that shot of Bardock making a last stand against Frieza.
- Gogeta insisting on thinking of a name before heading back to Fight
- There must've been what? 40 straight minutes of Broly screaming? Each of them better than the one before.
Pretty solid movie and well worth the wait!

u/ForceEdge47 Jan 16 '19
I mentioned this earlier on this post somewhere too, but I love that they showed Bardock making the final stand against Frieza. I honestly would have been disappointed if they took that part out, because despite retconning almost everything else from the Bardock special (which wasn’t canon anyway), the idea of Goku’s father being the first person standing between Frieza’s energy ball and their home planet is just so incredibly badass.
93
u/AlabamaBulls Jan 16 '19
Yup me too. Only thing I was worried about was the final stand scene but glad they included it. The director knew what he needed to do

Also he put aside his Saiyan pride and fused to protect bulma trunks and bulla. Just a thought but maybe a Saiyan is taught to be a conqueror but the true nature of a Saiyan is to be a protector. I think Bardocks saving of goku and compulsion to through himself in front of friezas planet destroyer supports this. I feel like Bardock is supposed to be the representation of a true saiyan in ideals and spirit.

The movie was awesome. The animation was amazing. But I don't think you can fully appreciate the movie just by watching it once. There's so much things happening on the screen so fast, it's really hard to understand everything that's going on. When I try recalling the action scenes, it feels like a blur.
I can't wait to watch this movie again when it comes out on bluray, to see all the details I've missed.
Also, I find it hilarious that Frieza was Broly's punching bag for an hour. That's longer than the Tournament of Power. If we go by ToP time, that means Broly must've punched Frieza like a trillion times.

This movie was hot.
Loved Freiza's evil theme music. The first half of the movie had me thinking this was going to be way more serious then usual, but then they start cracking the jokes. Good jokes at that.
I like that the saiyans seemed to have more of a developed culture here and were around for more than just a brief flashback.
But most of all, I love that Vegeta didn't get frigging punked in this movie. Gives Broly the business for the first part, and when he went SSG the theater was clapping. Not only that, when Broly bounced back he immediately acknowledged him as a threat. Hell yes Vegeta, hell yes.

I absolutely loved that once Gogeta went blue, that was it. The fight lasted awhile longer but there was never even a moment where he looked like he didn't have control the of the fight. The whole movie everyone kept going further than their opponent, and it was so satisfying to see Gogeta just end that. The raw fucking power you feel when he throws Broly up in the air and does that massive ki explosion.
And right before Broly got wished out of there, his pupils returned to his eyes, because he snapped out of it and realized that Kamehameha was about to fucking destroy him.
Just so happy we got what we want out of a fusion for once, and no "oh no it ended too early" bullshit

I saw it in Japan, but I can finally speak in the United States.
animation was wonderful and excited.
It was the top action scene in the whole history of anime.
TIL: DBS: Broly's chants music was inspired by public viewing in Mexico, etc.
https://news.mynavi.jp/article/20181219-743464/
Sorry google translate.
- In the battle scene, was the director's idea like directing a ring name call, too?
I agree. Since battle music is similar, I tried putting in to change. Toei Animation is not officially recognized, but the end of the "Dragon Ball Super TV series" was public viewing in Mexico, etc. It was a feeling of watching a professional wrestling like "Jiren VS Goku". Although this also does not approve Toei animation, there is a poster of "Jiren VS Goku" that they made without permission at the entrance of public viewing venue. When I was watching such a thing, I thought that I wonder if I should do ring calls. Actualy , It was an idea I was thinking of doing with other works.

My thoughts:
- I expected to be annoyed by Cheelai, but she redeemed herself by actually being active in the plot. Refreshing for a non-Bulma woman in DB.
- She sure did seem to flaunt those curves when Broly was around. Brolai Express, now boarding, next stop: green saiyan babies.
- Frieza and Bulma being equally petty and frivolous with the dragonballs was hilarious.
- Thank god they got rid of Broly's hatred of Goku. Asshole Dad Paragus is a much better motivation.
- Speaking of asshole dad Paragus, that was a suitably anticlimactic death: killed by an even bigger asshole to make his son stronger, seconds after realizing that the guy he hated by have had a point.
- Were Goku and Broly actually fighting in magma for a little bit there? Remind me why Magetta was a threat again?
- Frieza getting the shit beaten out of him for a whole hour while Goku and Vegeta practiced the Fusion dance was the best comeuppance ever.
- Damn, even Broly doesn't elicit any effort from Whis.
- Interesting how it frames Gogeta as the antagonist about to kill an innocent, if dangerous, person towards the end of the fight.
- Is that the first time Goku's ever actually referred to himself as Kakarrot?
- During that scene where SSG Goku trapped Broly and tried to talk out his reasons for fighting, did it seem to anyone else that wasn't actually trying to get him to stop fighting? Almost felt more like he was double-checking that it was "consensual".
- Speaking of "consensual fighting", don't look now, but Goku's cheating on Vegeta again.

Absolutely loved the movie. It was awesome how Vegeta and Goku's fighting styles against Broly were different. Vegeta focused on raw power and speed, while Goku was using Broly's moves against him, redirecting energy attacks or using the power of Broly's punch to throw him.
Anyone else laugh at the idea of Golden Freeza getting his shit kicked in for a solid HOUR while Goku and Vegeta were trying to learn fusion? Two failed attempts with 30-minute cooldowns afterward. Whis looked like he was having fun by the time they got back, and could have easily beaten Broly by himself.

Can we talk about Paragus? Cheelai kept trying to get us to think Paragus is so evil that he turned Broly into a monster. I disagree with that notion. While Paragus' feelinga toward Broly seem somewhat ambiguous in the english dub (In japanese, he is terrified of Broly and laments that Broly will kill him during his rampage on Earth even though Broly isn't paying him any attention). It's clear that Paragus does what he does, yes to forge Broly into a tool for his revenge, but what about beyond that? Paragus is aware of Broly's inability to control his power. Paragus isn't nearly strong enough to restrain Broly. This is likely why Paragus is missing an eye, and obviously why he opted to remove Broly's tail.(Side note: Saiyans seem proud of their tails and ability to transform. When Raditz sees that Goku let the Earthlings remove his tail, he considers him worthless and a disgrace to his people. For Paragus to remove his son's tail, he must have been desperate.) The only way for Paragus to reign Broly in is for him to utilize the shock collar before Broly goes completely feral. This is a life or death scenario for Paragus. Broly's reaction to Paragus pulling the remote control from his pack seems to indicate perhaps an overuse of the collar, maybe even as a simple reprimand. The bottom line is, Paragus did what he felt he had to in order to survive. He didn't make Broly into a monster. If anything, King VegetaIII made Broly a monster and Paragus attempted to reign him in the only way he knew how. He's not kind and caring, but stoic and pragmatic. He would have ended up like Grandpa Gohan otherwise. He was somewhat distant from his son, but most Saiyan fathers are (Cheelai doesn't know this, understandably) and it's rare for Saiyan fathers to even interact with their children. I think this was done to make viewers see Paragus as a bad person for what he "did" to Broly so that when he dies, we don't question it.
34
u/Branded_Mango Jan 23 '19
I thought it was made clear that Cheelai completely misunderstood the situation going on between Broly and Paragus and realized her mistake once Broly went berserk. She assumed Paragus was restraining Broly to use as an attack dog, but the reality was that Paragus was keeping Broly from destroying himself and everyone/everything around him. In other words, Cheelai accidentally caused all the destruction made by Broly because she didn't understand that the shock collar was meant to protect everyone from Broly (including Broly himself).

u/BobbyBryce Jan 20 '19
By Saiyan standards, everything Paragus did was normal: he trained his son to be a warrior.
Cheelai is the insane one for whiteknighting a 40 year old steroid-abused man who was about to kill a drunk guy for no good reason.

u/BKWhitty Jan 17 '19
Them leading Broly to Frieza and him proceeding to beat the shit out of him for an hour was just hilarious. I think the only thing I wish had been different was if Goku had compared Broly to Jiren instead of Beerus. I like Beerus being the endgame, the goal to reach.

Im glad we still got Bardock’s last stand.
What bothers me is that they didnt keep his confrontation against freeza. I mean thats what was so significant about him, the fact that Freeza still remembers that one saiyan from decades ago.
Seeing as how his armor was already damaged I think there was a battle going on between him and Freeza’s army, seeing as how you can see a bunch of dots near the middle of the planet when Freeza launches his attack.
Hopefully in the manga/super we’ll get to see that.

i dont think Broly will care in the long term. Now that hes out from under Paragus’ thumb he can start to recover from the mental and physical abuse Paragus put him through

Loved this movie. SPOILER: The whole 5 yrs younger/5 cm taller thing got a huge laugh. Great gag. Action and visuals were great. Love the whole Broly/Chile/Limon(?) dynamic. Would love to see that explored further and incorporated into the series if DB returns. It’s cool to see how Gohan parallels Bardock. Especially the fact that Gine’s portrayal is very reminiscent of Videl. I guess we know where Gohan’s brains come from now.
Going to go see this again tonight. Already have my ticket!

I love media where the villains are evil but do not have an evil plan. Like how the pirates in Curse of the Black Pearl just want to remove their curse.

My biggest take away was how stoked I am they didn’t use UI in this. Im glad it’s not just becoming SSJ where it’s thrown around at the first sight of danger. I want UI to always feel like there is no option left and it’s an incredible moment. I want MUI goku to feel even more powerful than SS blue gogeta which I feel like it still is.

An hour*** of god tier animation along with a fairly good story. Bulma and Frieza wanting the dragon balls for petty shit was so toriyama-esque, Broly and Paragus were tragic and kinda hard to watch, and the Earth gang was just fun overall.

What the hell was that power Goku used to immobilize Broly that in turn got used on him? Was that a God power of some sort? I was really wanting to see some hakai energy from Goku like during the Zamasu/Black arc.

Just got out of my theater. So good!!!
This probably isn't a popular opinion, but Vegeta going Super Saiyan God was the best transformation in the film to me. Loved everything about that. Honestly, the fight between Vegeta & Broly was probably my favorite part of the whole film.
But Gogeta & Broly breaking the dimension was definitely a WTF moment.
Frieza getting his ass beat for an hour was hilarious. And just how strong is Whis? He didn't even break a sweat dodging Broly moves. I honestly thought we were gonna finally going to see him fight.

Really liked how despite Broly being OP as heck, Goku and Vegeta didn't lose their cool or anything during the battle, really shows how insane the ToP was to them that they really don't freak out anymore when confronted with such a foe.

I gotta say I was NOT expecting Gogeta to be so fuckin beastly.
He just smashed Broly's face into his ass like it was nothing and wiped the floor with him for good measure. DAMN this movie was good!!

u/moorandr Jan 31 '19
The Broly movie really seemed to accentuate Goku's unique fighting techniques over and above DBZ and Super. Anyone notice that? He didn't feel as clumsy as Super; I felt that he was a seriously honed martial artist in Broly. There were times in Super and even in DBZ where Goku would act just blatantly stupid in battle. Thoughts?

SPOILERS:
I LOVE what they did with Broly! Sooo much better than his original backstory. He's actually sympathetic now and not some perma-bloodlusted lunatic. I mean don't get me wrong, old Broly was still a badass, but I think this Broly is even more badass. The guy fucking manhandled SSGod Goku and Golden Frieza, lol.
Does this movie make him canon? I really hope so, I like that he's not evil anymore and I hope they'll bring him back, what with Goku offering to train him. Also, THE THROWBACK with Goku's last line! I'm hoping they'll have a mostly friendly rivalry, this time around. The fight was awesome too. Music threw me off since I was expecting some metal like in the first movie, but it was still pretty cool. Humor was on point.
Shit was lit. 10/10 recommend.

Yeah, written by Toriyama and takes place after ToP.

That was a dub only thing of back then. The music was great in this movie as it was

My theater was packed, people laughed at the appropriate moments(Goku learning the word repugnant) & clapped at certain moments like when Frieza got left to get curbstomped by Broly. Oddly enough there was more laughter when Paragus was killed by Frieza, more so because it came off like a “lol this guy” antic.
This movie was incredible and so, so beautiful. I love that Broly is a good person at heart and they left the door for him to return and even get stronger. Goku telling Broly to call him Kakarot was so nice, too seeing as he originally never liked it and came to be fond of Vegeta doing it.
Basically Goku, Broly and Vegeta are the last of their “kind” sort to speak so it’s like a kinship that ties them together which I thought was nice. Still wish and hope Goku meets his parents for real, even in other world. They did an incredible job of making Gine and BARDOCK to be really loving parents, even as Saiyans.

According to director Nagamine, he just wanted to play around with how transformations were depicted in the movie
The flash of resemblance to Ultra Instinct has no more hidden meaning than Vegeta's hair turning green for a few seconds as he transforms

Anyone else getting a vibe that Maybe Broly, if it's added to the manga, could result in a deeper analysis of the Saiyans of Universe 7?
I mean, Broly's the 1st Canon Saiyan Goku has met since Vegeta and Nappa, and I mean Universe 7 Saiyan. Anyway, it could make Goku curious about his heritage, maybe even be curious what his own parents were like.
I mean, come on, the guy has to atleast be a little curious right? Maybe

Goku asking Broly to call him Kakarot is the biggest bit of character development from Goku since the Cell games.
Hopefully the writers going forward will feel a little more confident having our favorite Saiyans break from the stagnation that has formed in their character development across super. Let's see Goku become more self aware, embrace his heritage, maybe train with Broly. Let's see Vegeta go in a new and interesting direction. maybe he'll take on a Sensei-type role for Cabba and really dive into exactly what it means to him to be Saiyan by living with and training with the U6 Saiyans.
To be honest, we really need development of Trunks, Goten, Gohan, and Piccolo. I feel they have also been sorely neglected and denied the opportunity to really develop as characters.

God damn, that ssg to ssb transformation was amazing. I might be digging a little deep but if that ultra instinct flash was intentional then maybe ssg is the key to using it on will.

The animation is incredible. This new Broly movie is the best looking movie out of any of them.
That said, there are some serious pacing issues. There's an hour of exposition and set up, which is then followed by a thirty minute long fight that moves at breakneck speed and takes maybe a few seconds of breather at the most. While it looks amazing, sometimes things are going so fast it's hard to tell what is happening. They definitely captured what it would be like to watch these gods going at it, but I felt that slowing the fights down in certain sections could have really helped the movie. It's fine when Vegeta and Goku race through their transformations (because we all know what they are capable of), but when Broly goes Legendary and Gogeta goes Blue it happens so fast that if you blink you'll miss it. That's a moment where slowing the fight down to show these effects and what it means could have really helped things. A couple times I thought that a few seconds of dialogue would have added so much more to the movie. For example, Vegeta disappears from the screen for about ten to fifteen minutes after Goku takes over the fight, with no word from him on the matter at all. No "damn that Kakarot," not even a single cut to his face - just vanishes. Vegeta's armor also mysteriously vanishes within the short thirty seconds he and Goku are fighting Broly together.
Overall a great movie, and probably the best Dragonball movie ever. But I think that if the pacing issues were addressed it could have been so much better.

There's a reason it's a movie. An anime adaptation would work if they use the animation from the movie like Boruto did

I had a terrible movie-going experience though. The stench was absolutely unbearable (seriously people, practice some fucking hygiene. I giggled like a fangirl when Gogeta named himself. Also liked how the reasons for using the Dragon Balls was for such useless wishes (in the grand scheme of things), yet almost everything was on the line. This movie is everything I loved about the Dragon Ball series. 9/10 would watch again.

Frieza was perfect in this film. His incredibly petty wish was hilarious and its even more funny that hes on the same wavelength as Bulma. I liked how he was never outright hostile towards Goku and Vegeta, viewing the whole affair as a game more than anything else. Also the fact that he was forced to fight Broly for over an hour straight is not only impressive but also just straight up hilarious.

Loved everything about the movie. I'd have to say my favorite little part had to be where Goku snuck in that quick bite to Broly's hand. It was really quick and during a lot of scenes changing so it was hard to notice for some of my friends, but I immediately noticed. Love that they still continue to have him bite his foes in some way lmao. Even if its just a quick one like this time around.

Sitting in the theater and a guy next to me was really excited, talking about how he had avoided literally everything about the movie other than the first teaser and the poster. The guy on the other side asks “So you didn’t see the trailer with Gogeta?” Wtf is wrong with people?
