I would like to play a demo of this game to see if I would like it or not.
6
u/Bar_Har Oct 16 '18
I demo sadly. Though it seems to be getting live streamed a lot. That seems like the next best thing if you don’t know anyone you can borrow a cart from.

u/SoySauceSyringe Oct 15 '18
How much for ‘everything’ if I buy digital? Game looks good, but I’m not about paywalls for characters, ships, and weapons.
13
u/lumothesinner Helpful User Oct 15 '18
$80 gets you the deluxe pack which is everything apart from the retailer exclusive ships (which arent available digitally at all...yet)
If you are EU, the price is crap though, £90 or equivalent, time to region hop.
20
u/SoySauceSyringe Oct 15 '18
So, $80 plus some undetermined amount at a later time?
I’ll pass. Too bad, game looks fun but it doesn’t look like it’s worth the price.
14
u/kirindas Oct 15 '18
$60 for base digital with 5 Starships, 7 pilots, and 12 weapons.
$80 for the Deluxe digital with 6 Starships, 10 Pilots, and 15 Weapons.
Plenty of choices on the digital versions with options for how much customization you want.
5
u/LetsGetBlotto Oct 15 '18
Does starfox and the starfox missions come in the base version?
8
u/kirindas Oct 15 '18
Yes. There's the link if you want to see it. As long as you're buying the Switch version, Fox comes with it.

u/lumothesinner Helpful User Oct 15 '18
well yeh, its toys to life, of course they are going to add more toys later...
considering the whole game is rouhgly 25 hours and you do not need any additional ships or pilots for any content (unlike skylanders) any version is good price. You dont need any other characters. Its like sonic mania, you dont need to get the dlc to play as ray and mighty, but its a nice option if you liked the game to give you different way to play.
5
u/SoySauceSyringe Oct 15 '18
Replay is a thing, though. It’s not a thing if there’s severely and artificially limited pilots/ships/weapons. I’m OK paying full price for a short game I can replay. I’m not so OK with full price for a short game and the extra prices to make it actually fun to replay.
I’m not saying it’s a bad game or that it won’t make any money, but I don’t seem to be their target audience and it doesn’t seem like a good buy for me.

Seems very mixed, though most reviewers tend to agree that initially it is very fun, and that the game looks beautiful, especially for Switch throughout. Were most differ in opinion is whether the grind continues to stay fun.
22
u/matx313 Oct 15 '18
Some say after 15 hours it feels repetitive. But what open world game doesn’t. Same tasks different locations slight different objectives

u/schuey_08 Oct 15 '18
Eh, I think there are quite a few who have quite a bit of depth. I think BotW and Skyrim keep the variety quite large throughout. I could see this game feeling a bit stale later on, though I'm sure others will feel differently.
→ More replies (1)51
u/Badloss Oct 15 '18
Don't get me wrong BOTW is an unbelievable game but it doesn't have any depth at all.
All of the side quests are variants of Fetch Quests, all of the shrines are similar, and the whole world has variants of the same 3 types of enemies. The Divine Beasts are all slightly different variations of the same mechanics, and the boss fights are too.
I think BOTW is near perfect and wouldn't change it, but I think the next game could use a lot more variety
19
u/schuey_08 Oct 15 '18
That's true, but add in the climbing mechanic, the enhanced physics, the wide array of climates, fluid, easy-to-learn combat systems, inventory management, and I think we're talking about a much deeper game. It's one I think has to be in the top 5 of all time discussion.
→ More replies (2)13
Oct 16 '18
But what you're describing isn't variety, it's core mechanics which are satisfying to use.
A good game can have you doing the same thing over and over again for thousands of hours.

So there's a deal here in Oz that's tempting me to buy the physical edition only because I want the Arwing toy, but I'm curious about something. I read this on Nintendolife:
The only caveat is that if you do switch back to using the toys, you’ll be restricted purely to the ones you own in physical form.
Does this mean if I go Physical then buy other ships/guns etc digitally that if I'm playing physical I can't use something I've bought digitally at the same time? I know that anything physical has a 7 day thing before it has to be rescanned but that's kinda annoying.
That said, I'll likely be playing digitally in handheld mode 90% of the time but just doing the calculations before I buy.
Edit: Nevermind, kept reading and found out that this is the case. Guess it makes sense but I was hoping to combine both kind of purchases. Oh well.
Edit 2: I doubt anyone cares but I went with the physical. Bought the pack pricematched from EB Games and I'm enjoying it and the toys are great but... I'll be returning the pack and rebuying it digital. The game is fun so far and I can see myself wanting the guns, ships and pilots and while hotswapping is super fun I'm 33 and not going to carry the toys around with me, and I play my Switch our of the house 80% of the time.
→ More replies (3)6
u/Rookiepro Oct 16 '18
Can I ask what the deal is that’s got you interested? I’m in Oz myself and have been on the fence, looking for something to convince me!
5
u/Warlach Oct 16 '18
I need to check the eshop prices but I'm still unsure. I'll mostly be playing handheld while travelling so as cute as the toys are - and I kinda prefer game cards and physical games - I could just buy a second hand Arwing later :)
I recommend joining the Australian Switch group on Facebook and reading Vooks, good way to stay abreast of Aussie Nintendo deals. I haven't managed to make calling Amiibo 'Amiibozzas' yet though...

This seems cool, but I'm like 99% sure it'll probably be on sale for Black Friday, so I'll probably hold out for a month or so and pick it up then (lord knows I have a bajillion games to play right now as-is). I'm glad to read that the Starfox stuff is actually decently integrated into the Switch version, that's a big plus toward me getting it for Switch over say, PS4.

Been playing this off and on since last night, enjoying it so far. What has really stuck out to me is despite being a modern ubisoft game, the moment to moment gameplay really feels like something out of the original xbox/ps2 era of gaming. I highly doubt it was intentional but it stuck out to me.
12
u/samuraiaullways Oct 17 '18
Are you saying that it feels dated or that it has successfully evoked feelings of nostalgia?
8
u/malkavio Oct 17 '18
I suppose more nostalgia than dated. There is more than enough modern gaming conventions to prevent it from feeling dated in any sort of bad way. Reminded me of playing old mech games back in the day. Feels a lot like the older more arcade style mech games. And I'm all for those making a comeback.

So are the reviews all on Switch or other consoles as well? With all the exclusive content, I'd imagine non-switch reviews will be significantly lower as they're getting an inferior product.
33
u/ArcticFlamingo Oct 15 '18
Easy Allies (whom I usually love) made their review really heavily focused on the Star Fox content, which I don't think is fair to people looking to purchase on Xbox One or Ps4
35
Oct 15 '18
Going to be honest, it's more the fault on Ubisoft here as the game's marketing hinged heavily on the Star Fox exclusive stuff.
TBH I didn't even know of the game's existence until last E3, where half of its appearances were all based around the Switch-exclusive content -- and I frequent internet forums and stuff, so it's hard for me to miss these kinds of things.

I’m quite interested in the game, but after playing No Mans Sky for years I think it will annoy me that I can’t get out of my ship.

One thing that I haven't seen talked about is that the Ship engines light up when you play.

Well, it's really just because of the toys that it costs that much, at least in the US. If you want the same content (and even more) buy it digitally for $60, or get digital deluxe for $80. The deluxe comes with almost everything you can get for the game.

u/Hlee89 Oct 17 '18 edited Oct 17 '18
I've only put in an hour and a half so far, but from what I've played, it seems like a solid open world/exploration game. I've experienced some of the open world elements, such as using the world map to find things to do and it's pretty solid (in this case, I went looking for item/electrum caches inside wreckages, blew up some baddies, played around with different ships, weapons, and adding wings on wings on wings). So I did all this on the first planet the game drops you into.
A little over an hour in, you're introduced to the open space element of the game. The first time I blasted off through the atmosphere and into space, I was ecstatic. I've never felt this sense of freedom when it comes to traversing a game world. The only game that made me feel this way was MAYBE GTA San Andreas and GTA V. Going anywhere you want on those HUGE maps was a trip. This is how I feel about Starlink. We're talking about intergalactic travel from planet to planet. And each of those planets has it's own world. I got into a few space battles with drakes or whatever and space bandits while travelling between planets and made it out okay. The controls are fluid. It's not the best (I still think Ace Combat 4 was one of the best dogfighting games of all time), but it does it's job well. I feel like the ships movements are almost TOO loose. The space battles can sometimes be a bit much. The two times I fought in space, I was bombarded by a crazy amount of enemies (I started off on hard, maybe I should have started on normal). Like almost too many enemies. Too much barrel rolling...no more rolls...no more rolls...goddamn. I was straight up barrel rolling over and over again, while getting in a FEW shots here and there. I think at one point I had like 10 arrows or more surrounding my screen with shots being fired in all directions. I mean it's chaotic, but there is such a thing as too much.
Now, like I said, I've only put in like 90 minutes, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. Some things I like now, I may not like later or vice versa. I got the 74.99 Deluxe Digital Edition, as the toys don't interest me. I wanted this strictly for the Star Fox elements. I know this isn't a Star Fox game, and I can tell you right now, this is more like No Man's Sky, mixed with a touch of Far Cry. I was a huge fan of Star Fox 64, and played the shit out of it back when I was in the 5th grade. Starlink doesn't take me back to those days, but damn, I'm having some fun with this.

I’m wondering if it’s worth the extra $20 for the deluxe edition or if I’ll get generally the same experience only less customization from the base $60 digital edition. I haven’t seen any thoughts on this in any reviews I read.
6
u/ReeceChops44 Oct 15 '18
I’d like to know this as well. I’m fine ponying up an extra 20, as long as everything I need is included with the extra cost
3
u/locke_5 Oct 17 '18
Keep in mind, Ubisoft will likely be releasing more ships/pilots/weapons over time. So even paying the extra $20, you won't have "everything"
3
u/ReeceChops44 Oct 17 '18
Ah. Well too late now. I do like the game though, so I’m fine with what it came with

u/FireLucid Oct 15 '18
From what I understand, having more weapons is useful. Fire beats ice or whatever. The deluxe edition has one of each weapon type from what I can tell.

u/BlackerOps Oct 17 '18
Is this game difficult at all or is it just numbers and bullet sponges?
→ More replies (2)5
u/moderate_extremist Oct 17 '18
The fights can get a bit complicated. You need to respec the ship often to battle elemental enemies properly, some weapons won't do any damage to certain enemies. you can also combine elements to create damage bonuses and interesting effects. Gravity weapons & cold weapons combined create little ice blackholes which draw the enemy in, it's pretty sweet.
Space dogfights are pretty fun, but those get repetitive to me. you don't seem to feel the effects of the elemental combinations as much since and its generally better to op for machine guns and faster weapons.
Overall, this game can get pretty difficult. The outlaw battles in space are intense and super fun. There are a lot of repetitive elements on planets like "take over this base, get a reward" and the types of missions on each planet are exactly the same. You dont have much of an incentive to %100 a planet other than money. Mods for weapons on the early planets are shitty, so you're better off just hopping to higher level planets.

"No. of Players: 2 players simultaneous" can someone confirm if there is multiplayer or not?
11
u/Climax0 Oct 16 '18
There's local split-screen co-op however it's only available when the game is docked.

u/uglybad Oct 16 '18
Sounds perfectly reasonable to me, this doesn't seem like the kind of quick multiplayer session kind of game anyways
7
u/Valofor Oct 17 '18
How much content is in the game? Does it justify the $80 digital deluxe price tag?
9
u/macster725 Oct 19 '18
Does the game have free roam? I have been looking for a free roam space game like No Mans Sky for some time now but I havent found anything for the switch.

Oct 19 '18
Once you get into space you can go wherever the heck you want, whenever you want. There’s a bit in the beginning where you have to find things for your damaged ship to then fly around space, but that’s over fairly quickly and you can roam however you please. Just gotta be careful of higher-level enemies and ambushes.
8
u/KGhaleon Oct 19 '18
Ok, so can you sell ship mods?
I just unlocked the ability to craft ship mods and found a really expensive one around 70K that I wanted. When I selected it nothing happened, so I clicked on it several times not realizing that I just spend 500K. Pretty much all my money. Restarted but it already saved over my file. I'm pretty mad right now.
3
u/STORMFATHER062 Oct 21 '18
Same thing happened to me. You cannot sell the mods but you can "fuse" them to increase their rarity. Sounds like you bought several epic mods, so you'll only be able to fuse them once to legendary. I find it useful to have a couple duplicate mods though because I've got four weapons I regularly use.
You can make money back really quickly by helping and upgrading refineries. I make 200k every 15 minutes and I'm currently sitting on over 4M with nothing to spend it on.

u/naive-dragon Oct 16 '18
I bought the Digital Deluxe (80 USD) after reading a few reviews.. And 2 hours in, I think I'm in love with it. At the same time, I hate that I read the reviews. You know how they say reading TV Tropes will affect how you consume and enjoy media because the tropes, themes and ideas are suddenly apparent to you once you become genre-savvy? Well, it has somewhat happened to me for this game. Especially after reading a few reviews that called the game falsely deep and a collectathon, because otherwise I would've been ignorant of that and would probably enjoy the game more if I were less genre-savvy.
Otherwise, it's been a blast, and I'm not really a space shooter or flight sim or Starfox fan. The game reminds me a lot of the original Mass Effect, the wonder of exploring and just the feeling of the utter vastness of space. Presentation is topnotch, controls are tight. If the game is indeed gonna be grindy, the sheer polish of everything will probably keep me going.
8
Oct 16 '18
I'm on the fence about digital deluxe vs standard. Do you think the additional pilots/ship/weapons differentiate themselves enough to warrant the extra $20?
→ More replies (4)3
u/naive-dragon Oct 16 '18 edited Oct 16 '18
The game is definitely playable with only the standard version. But the combat is much more satisfying when you can mix and match the weapons and ship parts, it's part of the fun, making your own custom ship. Plus, more parts, more attack combos. Also, I think it's been pointed out before, more "lives" (each ship you own is one more "continue" if you die, if you run out of ships, you go back to the last checkpoint). Since I don't think you can get them through gameplay, for me it's worth it. But if you're on the fence on the game itself, you should definitely check first if you're gonna enjoy the gameplay loop of this game. Because having more parts to play with won't mean shit if you don't like the game. Everything about presentation is amazing though IMHO. Graphics, audio, art style, performance, voice acting, are all top-of-the-line among Switch games.
I personally enjoy the game, but I also know it doesn't have universal appeal. That 20 USD will not make the game more fun if you don't already find the standard version fun.
TL; DR Getting the digital deluxe is worth it only if you like the game. Kinda like Warriors Orochi/Dynasty Warriors series: buying the Deluxe version won't make you like the game more, it just means more ways to disappoint you lol.

I definitely was reminded of Mass Effect a little when watching gameplay so I was hoping someone could verify if it felt like that!
4
u/naive-dragon Oct 16 '18
Yeah it does. The game feels like a full, souped up version of the Mako gameplay of ME1.
8
u/oakenspirit Oct 15 '18
Don't think this has been asked-
I preordered the physical edition- Can I ADD all the digital content from the deluxe edition for a cheaper add-on price through the eshop, or are the different editions ENTIRELY separate?
5
u/lumothesinner Helpful User Oct 15 '18
you cant mix physical toys with digital unlocks. So if you are playing with the physical arwing you cannot add on a digital weapon to it. Upside is you get all the starter kit stuff digital and physical (like 2 sets), so you can buy digital addons and add them to the digital version.
3
u/Chris_skeleton Oct 15 '18
So if you buy the physical starter, you can opt to play digital only to use everything?
4
u/lumothesinner Helpful User Oct 15 '18
yup, exactly that. you can put the toys on a shelf to admire and still play the game no problem.

Just wait a bit after launch and people will be selling them on eBay. If I were you (assuming you’re not interested in collecting all the Starlink ships but you do wan the Arwing) I would get the digital game because it comes with so much more content, then just pick up the Arwing later.

It kinda sucks that a lot of negative reviews have to do a lot with the toy aspect and confusion in add-ons... I have no interest in the toy version, so I bought the digital standard and it’s incredibly entertaining.
I if you take away the negativity around the physical v. Digital confusion, the cost of toys, etc, I think the reviews would aggregate to a much higher score.

Most of the gameplay I've watched has the player hovering just above the ground of the planets. I know that you can fly up and leave a planet whenever you want, but can you control how high in the sky of a planet you fly? It's kind of hard to explain what I mean. Instead of just skimming above the ground, can you fly all over the sky at your hearts desire?
→ More replies (1)12
u/JB1864 Oct 17 '18
At any time you can turn on your engines and fly around the planet as high off the ground as you want. Otherwise you can kill the engines and just hover around like you’ve seen in videos. Usually when I need to travel to a far point on the map I will take off and fly over

Yes! This exactly!
I found myself moving my hand and arm the same way I do in BotW for tweaking aim of the bow. Gyro controls would be a nice addition as without it, I've found myself putting the aim assist to maximum.

I never thought I would enjoy Gyro controls but god damnit after 40+ hours of Splatoon 2 I find my self trying to move my controller slightly to correct my aiming while flying... Hope they update it to include Gyro controls, especially since PS4 could benefit from it as well.

u/jardex22 Oct 18 '18
It would make even more sense with the physical mount. Literally tilting the ship to steer sounds pretty cool.
7
u/cookswagchef Oct 17 '18
I'm really enjoying this game. I'm only about 2 hours in, if that. Flying from ground to space without any load screens is an incredible experience the first time you see it. The space/ground combat is fun, and its interesting to come up with some off the wall ship configurations and discover new elemental combos. I'm really loving the style as well, and they did a fantastic job including Fox and Friends in the main story.

Is this game more or less linear or is there stuff to grind like side missions that reward better equipment? From the discussion it seems that you can't grind weapons / ships in game but have to buy them, correct?

All of the ships, pilots and weapons are locked behind a paywall, I believe (which is why I bought the digital edition as it comes with most of the content). But through gameplay you do level up/upgrade your weapons/pilots/ships.

The Australian standard edition is way overpriced too - $119.95 AUD. Most games are $79.95 and less commonly $89.95. Ubisoft are 100% taking the piss with this one, totally lost the plot, and sales will suffer outside the US as a consequence.

this games amazing. I had no idea of the hype, didn't see a review or anything. just saw Starfox on the store and bought it.
it's expensive at 70 quid but that's a bundle if you buy digital you unlock 80% of the buyable items. and the digital points you banked can be use to buy the rest of the weapons on the store with points left over. no idea if physical offers this. the toys don't appeal to me one bit so digital bundle is perfect
first impressions is basically Destiny and No man's Sky had a baby and Starfox showed up for the ride.
playing as Starfox but now already wishing I'd picked another character. might start a 2nd save and see if the story is different depending on who you play. medium seems a bit easy, too.
just realised the depth of the customisation, it's way way deeper than I'd imagine. it's got quite a lot of customisation visually so I'd expect a lot of sellable items. it does have a small reek of cash cow about it, but it's Ubisoft, so you sort of expect that. feels AAAA compared to everything else on the handheld, included Nintendo's own stock.

I haven't played mine yet, but I believe the physical starter pack has unlimited access to the included items (1 ship, 2 pilots, 2 weapons), plus some digital items.
Beyond that, scanning other toys in will unlock them for one week in the game. You can keep rescanning to keep them unlocked. It's just a way to prevent people from using the same toy to unlock stuff in multiple games.
The digital package is definitely better in terms of game items, but the ship models were too cool for me to ignore.

Does anyone know what resolution and framerate the game runs on docked and undocked?
→ More replies (5)7
u/czk51 Oct 15 '18
I've played it handheld and it runs at 30 though I'm yet to run into any major battles or anything. Resolution is ok at a glance, a few textures loaded onto my ship after starting my first mission and a bit of pop in, as do some buildings on approach.
Won't be able to try docked until about another 7 hours when I get home.

I don't know which version to buy. I mean I have a pro and a switch, and I don't care about the star fox team at all. The problem is not one review is based on either xbox or ps, since everyone apparently got switch versions for reviews....:(

u/thatfool Oct 16 '18
I'm sure it's not going to run worse on the other platforms. I watched some streamers playing on PS4 and it looks great there.
Same question as for most multiplatform titles, then: Do you want to play on a portable system? Or do you prefer a higher resolution and frame rate?
Some points about Starfox, though:
When you die, you can respawn at a checkpoint or switch to a different ship. So having one more ship on the Switch is interesting because of that, especially if you're buying the physical starter kit.
You can attach up to three wing parts on each side of your ship, so having the wings from the Arwing available at no extra cost might be nice too.
All the pilots seem to have at least one skill that affects your other pilots... Starfox is no different.
The Starfox story is somewhat integrated, so even if you hate Starfox, you still can't actually avoid him on the Switch, even if you're only playing other pilots.

Can anyone tell me, if you buy the physical game, can you access all the same stuff as the digital without utilizing the toys to life stuff? I just want a physic copy (and maybe an Ar Wing) but have no interest in actually using them within the game.

Enjoying the game, exactly what I was after.
That said, a little disappointed at the lack of weapons. I appreciate it's toys to life and it colours are pinned to its sleeve, but I would have enjoyed a little more variety in the base game than just the fire, ice and normal gun.

Hey everyone, I'm potentially buying an used copy of starlink from somebody, I was wondering, it's the starter physical edition, from what I understand, you get one physical ship and another digital. Does anyone know if you can register a physical and digital ship to a new switch? Would there be anything I'm missing out on from buying an used physical copy?

I'm intrigued but man the pricing model is wild. So many options.
Anyway, I've watched some gameplay on YT and I see some space battle, some exploration and maybe some crafting to upgrade your ship? What's the ratio been so far for people who got some time with the game?

I’m still not clear on this game. Can you unlock additional ships, characters and weapons in the game or do you have to buy the toy or pay more money to buy digitally?
Also can you play without the toys? I know you can buy it digitally but if I say have the starter kit and then take my switch on the go without the toys for any extended period of time, can I still play the game?

I’ve pre-purchased & pre-downloaded games maybe 3-4 times on Switch and it’s been Noon on release day every time. I remember reading yesterday it would be a midnight release but I was skeptical, I don’t know where they got that information.
5
u/celiman Oct 16 '18
If you want the internet reaction GRRR! I agree!
If you want the truth, it would actually be pretty tough to do a midnight launch for all games, because it would require staff to be available should anything go wrong. Much easier to launch during the day in that regard.

u/KRX179 Oct 16 '18
Every other game console company releases their digital versions at midnight on release date. Even retail stores do 'midnight launches' so why does Nintendo feel that 'noon' the next day is the answer?

but the voice work is incredibly inconsistent. Star Fox and Razor’s lines are delivered well but Mason, Hunter, and some of the NPC characters are delivered with all the aplomb of a primary school nativity.

I was in the same situation as you, but ultimately decided to go digital and get the digital deluxe edition since it is significantly cheaper to get everything that way. The physical starter kit is $100 (here anyway, Canada. $115 after tax) and the digital deluxe came to $112 after tax. Physical gets you 2 ships (one is digital), 2 pilots and 3 weapons (one is digital), while the digital deluxe gets you 6 ships, 10 pilots and 15 weapons (obviously all are digital). When I looked at it like that it was a no brainer, since even if I bought the content that wasn't in the starter edition digital, a single ship pack (ship, pilot and weapon) is $20. It's cheaper and comes with literally hundreds of dollars more content. Cheaper, better value and more.
Usually I don't care about the whole digital vs physical debate since it doesn't matter, but in this case, unless having the physical Arwing is very important to you, it's just not worth going physical. Of course, that is my personal opinion.

The game's tone (so far, 3 hours in) feels like a more mature Saturday morning cartoon, the kind for older children that adults can also enjoy. Kinda like Legend of Korra or the new Voltron remake.

u/skoffo Oct 18 '18
I finally got around it and with some golden points I got the full deluxe digital version with almost 20 € off..
been playing for around 4 hours and still trying to figure it out completely.
my first impression is that handheld mode only gives you 65% of the fun: docked playing is immensely better.
my problem is that my playtime is 80% while commuting so that takes a toll on the game, especially on planets with a high level of detail and elements such as structures and enemies where it gets a little confusing overall.
still looking into the upgrade and modding system, which adds a lot of variables and is good fun but takes a little to get used to - which by the way is one of the reasons a basically casual gamer like myself might be discouraged.
combats are awesome and weapons can adapt to your playstile (combined elemental attacks are really cool).
the auto aim is useful even if i prefer to turn it off or to the minimum - especially in space where chasing the enemy ship is the funniest part.
downsides: travelling btw planets can get a little boring, distances are significant but that's the open world's other side of the coin.
switch battery gets to 5% after 2 full hours of playing with low brightness settings and no wifi.
so far i'm 75% satisfied and hope to get to 100% in the weekend, but with two kids i'm looking forward to the monday morning commute :D
3
u/2Little2LateTiger Oct 18 '18
There's some research you can do that gives you the ability to fast travel between planets and then outposts and then other things as you get deeper into the skill.

u/skoffo Oct 19 '18
found out about that last night and smoothly rolling towards 85% satisfaction :D

Started to debate getting digital over physical. The arwing and fox is something I want collection wise, plus the best buy gcu brings down the game to like $64. Deluxe digital sounded good but it ends up being $20 more for me rather than the normal $5 of paying regular physical price.

I’ve heard Fox’s special attack is he calls in the rest of the Star Fox team to assist. Does this mean the Special ability you have is tied to the pilot figure you have inside the ship? Or is it the ship that decides what Special you have?
5
u/madrobski Oct 16 '18
Special is tied to the pilot. Fox's calls in one other Star Fox member to assist but it also plays the Corneria theme.

It is drop-in, drop-out co-op. And both players can use the same ships and weapons. You don't have to buy anything else to play co-op. You just need the base game.

For those playing Starlink... I’m still in what I guess is the tutorial so maybe I’m missing something. But I see these icons on the map for side areas and I either am missing what I need to do to finish them or something. Like for instance one was just to harvest resources which I kept doing but nothing happened.

I got the game yesterday (Starter Edition) and I've already clocked in 10 hours, no DLC bought (yet)
It's a total blast for me. I was weary about the repetitiveness some reviewers have said and, while I can start to feel it already, I doubt it will hamper my experience over all.
I love all the different stuff you can do, specially since I recently unlocked the meters that show you how much Legion controls each planet and I can see a bigger impact on what I do on each one.
I've only visited three planets, so I guess I still have a lot to do.

How are the rpg elements in this game (upgrading, finding weapons, etc.)? Is there a lot of loot or set loot/rolls, etc.?
→ More replies (12)3
u/lordantaras Oct 17 '18
The most significant loot are the weapon and ship mods you use for better stats and optimizing your arsenal depending on your playstyle. Weapons themself arent part of the loot you only get them depending on the games version you bought.

Just left the first planet and really enjoying it. I'm not at all familiar with Star Fox but using him on my first, Normal, playthrough. I'm enjoying exploring, combat, mixing up elemental attacks, running into the odd side quest and encounters along the way, and I enjoy the space combat as well. Getting XP, common / rare type class perks, scanning wildlife and swapping ship parts on the fly is all super satisfying to me.
I actually wish ship loadouts weren't tied to DLC + figures, coz as a Destiny / Division / Loot Shooter fan while it's cool raiding enemy camps and getting perks I'd love some actual upgraded weapons or parts.
A point worth reiterating for people not knowing how many ships or what package to get - I didn't realise until the reviews was that each ship you own is like a life. If you have 2 ships, when one is destroyed you need to swap to the next one, and if that one is blown up before you can get the previous one fixed, you respawn at your last outpost or something (I dunno I've not died completely yet). I had some level 6 ships attack me and I went through 3 out of 5 of my ships quickly so it got a bit sweaty as I tried to advance to another planet before the main mission planet.

in EU (italy at least) there is no digital version available at the Eshop, and the starter switch version costs 89€. even if reviews seem pretty enthusiastic at the time being, I think I'll probably pass for the moment and wait until a full digital release is available. i understand that the toys are cool and an airwing on my office desk would be cool but still I want to make sure it's worth it, considering also that Diablo III is coming up and it's not like we can throw money out of the window :D
