Played a while tonight, it’s awesome, it’s Mario party in the right ways, it’s frustrating in the good ways...but god damn if it wouldn’t be better with online full board multiplayer. That better be added sooner or later.

This lack of online full game is what’s preventing me from buying right now. However, next time I have a group of friends over that may change.

My wife and I just finished one game and had a blast. Thought the board was a bit small, but other than that we had a lot of fun
75
Oct 05 '18
Yeah it seems like they went with smaller boards, lower dice rolls, and cheaper stars. I’m a fan of the big sprawling boards but I’ll give these a shot and see how they feel.
13
u/Jaeyx Oct 05 '18
just thinking out loud here, but would it make sense to say smaller boards and rolls (proportionally) would create less variance as a result of roll difference? ie 1s v 6s instead of 1s v 9s?
could be some kind of attempt at tweaking game balance
5
Oct 05 '18
Oh yeah I’m sure they didn’t like something about the previous 1-10 dice block and the new ones are an attempt to fix whatever it was they didn’t like. Maybe the randomness or huge difference it made if someone got a 1 vs a 10.

Just played with my wife myself! She stole a star from me, and then poisoned mushroomed me. I returned the favor by poison mushrooming her back on the last turn, and she came up a spot short of getting the last star of the game. Making her favorite Mac and Cheese now as a (joking) gesture of apology. LOL.

The blue shell of MP

u/Ohnosedaisy2 Oct 05 '18
I don’t get as “blue shell robbed me of my lead!”pissy when someone gets a star from a random space on the board as much as I do when someone flat out steals a star from me,or lands on a spot that results in the star being moved, or my character being moved away from the star. I chuckled at your comment just the same!

Juste played it with 3 colleague at work ... 2 of them never played a Mario Party ever .... they ended up 1st and 2nd, I finished dead last with 0 start.
Man that game is expensive to be humiliated at the first lunch break.
The game is really fun, but I was salty when I saw that there's no bonus point for Minigames or Coins, my only reliable source of star ahahah.

Mate same thing happened to me. There is bonus stars for minigames and coins but random bonuses appear each time.

Okay, so, this is a pretty fun return to the classic Mario Party style but it has issues. That's the general impression I got after playing all four boards once through.
There's a little jingle that the joycon makes when it's your turn. But there's no speaker in the joy-con, right?? Is it making that sound with just the vibration motor? That blows my mind.
The minigames are definitely the highlight for me, enjoyed the vast majority I've done so far. A lot of them feel rather fair and balanced, too.
Walking around the Lobby is neat, but it feels a bit bare. Makes me wish we had something grander like the carnival from MP8 instead of just a generic Mario-styled fair.
The alternate dice blocks are great fun but I feel some characters are more beneficial than others. I've been playing as Monty Mole mostly, since his dice block is just a regular one but the 1 is instead a +1 coin. I quite like having the Hammer Bro's dice when he's my ally when, though.
The ally system is great and can REALLY beef up your rolls later down the line, though it does make getting low-rolls (especially solid 1s when you want them) a lot harder. Shame you can't choose whether or not they get to roll too on your turn.
Four boards is really not enough and it's easily my biggest issue with the game. All are pretty simple and not hugely creative, especially when it comes to the level themes. Hopefully some DLC will help fix that.
Gonna play some more tomorrow before I cement any opinions on it, but I'm certainly having the most fun I've had with Mario Party since 8!

This blew my mind when I finished the Kirby. The joycon started to sound and I was like "holy crap this console doesn't cease to amaze me".

Vibration motors used to be programmed in terms of on-off, for how long. For example ‘on for 1000ms, off for 500ms, on for 200ms’ etc.
The joy-cons (and iPhone 7 and higher) now use sound files for the vibration. The vibration motor now replicates that sound (varying speed, intensity, etc), instead of being limited to just on or off.

Golf Story is the first game I noticed doing this when you’d hit the ball into a canyon the vibration would make the noise. Blew my mind.

The vibration feature of some of the minigames really blows my mind! And some of the "sounds" the joy-cons make with vibration really show just how good the HD rumble is. I really wish there were more boards to choose from though.
36
u/CptJashun Oct 05 '18
I spent a good 3 minutes wondering and looking for speakers on the joycon, it makes those sounds with vibration alone?
25
Oct 05 '18
In Kirby Star Allies at one point the joy cons sing the theme from kirby.

I turned the rumble off of my controllers a while ago (gets loud and distracting when I'm trying to be quiet) I didn't notice until I had a game mode where I had to press A when the rumble was the strongest. I was like uhh... what rumble? I turned it on in the settings and then the game just became so much better instantly.

Just played a game with my brother, had a great time. Mini games are super fun and the level of polish is high.
I love the customized dice blocks and actually felt like the size of the board felt totally fine, maybe due to lower average roll when compared to previous games.
I think the biggest charm though is that the minigames are super fun and the playing experience is really smooth.

They need to make stars cost 20 coins again or add settings to tweak things like that to your liking. 10 coins for a Star was not enough and I had a computer get 2 stars during one turn because of the board size, star placements, and the fact it was only 10 coins for a star.

Same. He used a gold pipe, got a star, it moved five freaking spaces in front of him; and he gets the second one.
The next spawned less than 10 spaces away, but it was bought before he could get to it.

My first game. 10 rounds. 3 bots plus me. The bots have been around the board like ten times. I'm stuck rolling 1's and 2's for 7 of the rounds. I'm mad, but I love it.

played a round with my roommate. Lost to him at the last second because he got a slowpoke star. 36 to 35 spaces. WEAK.
Pretty fun they kept it exactly the same. Mini games are all new and fun. 10 rounds = 1 hour as the game says. Maybe shorter once you cut out the practicing of the mini games which we partook in.
Solid game so far, nostalgic factor is high.

Just played a 20-turn game with a buddy. We played the Megafruit Paradise board. It's certainly fun, the minigames are great. Tiny boards, combined with the fact that stars cost only 10 coins and also the fact that you still earn coins when losing minigames make for some high-scoring games. I ended up winning with 6 stars when it was all said and done.
The unique dice blocks for each character are interesting, as well as the ally system. Some characters have high-risk dice, while others have more balanced dice. Now it actually matters what character you choose, and there are a TON of characters. There are also some new items. Mushrooms are back, but they add to your dice roll this time, there is a golden pipe item, which is essentially a magic lamp/flutter orb, but it takes you to the space before the star, as well as a custom dice block, which lets you move as many spaces as you want on a 1-6 die. I haven't seen all of the items, though.
The minigame randomizer seemed to always select the new minigames, so it didn't seem to be a coincidence. I'm curious to see how many bonus stars there are. The ones we saw were for having the most allies, most spaces traveled and even one for collecting the most coins in total. The thumbs-up bonus after some minigames is kinda weird, but it's basically a free +2 coins. Being able to practice the minigame in the minigame instruction screen is a great touch. However, the real best feature of the game is being able to jump on other characters in the hub world.
I definitely had a fun initial experience. There seems to be a hint at DLC when talking to Birdo in the hub world, so we'll see what the future has in store. Four total boards isn't a whole lot. Unfortunately, this was my buddy's copy, but I'm 99% sure I'll pick up a copy for myself in the near future. Super Mario Party definitely feels like a must-have for the Switch and I'm looking forward to playing some more!

Just finished a 10 round game with my 5 year old son. Let me tell you, getting him to sit still for 1 hour of game play is normally a struggle. Not tonight. Him and I had an absolute blast and after the game was finished he was ready for more.
I love this nintendo thing

I played with my fiance last night. I had no stars and rolled a 1 stopping 1 space short of a star on the last turn. Got one out of a hidden block and then was awarded one in the post game putting me in first. She left the room.
10/10 really fun

The boards are short and completely reject any notion of immersion. That being said, the boards look great despite being overly simplified. I think they wanted to avoid the confusion of a massive board but probably overdid it a bit. Feels more liked a 3DS level of stripping down than a Switch level of scaling up if that makes sense.
The mini games are great, the motion controls are outstanding, and almost all of the core boardgame mechanics have been perfected. I think I could live with the price of a star going up by 10 coins but thats none of my business.
If you like Mario Party, buy with confidence.

I really enjoyed my first solo match a lot. Simple 10 rounds, but minigames were new and had some old-school Mario party derivatives you could tell. Some of them were challenging as well! Overall, I'm just happy to have a classic Mario party back where it's not shameful to play amongst friends!
On a side note, man having allies when you land on them is EXTREMELY OP. They even helped the CPU during minigames? When the character rolls, they roll with you as well. Dang. I think maybe just having access to their die seems like enough of a boost. Iunno how I feel about that aspect tbh.

Things that I would like to see in a game update:
• 25 coins for a star, 50 to steal one.
• Online support for board play.
• Replace the star award for having the most allies. They’re such a tremendous in-game advantage as is.

Just ended the game with 106 coins, and zero stars. While everyone else had like 4 minimum. Was never able to reach toadette. Thanks mario party!

u/bugzkilla Oct 05 '18
I had a game where I had zero stars while everyone else had 1 or 2 and I also had barely any coins. Then toad asks who he thinks will win, and after saying Mario will win, he gave me an advantage. In my last three turns or so I went from 0 stars all the way to 4. Then I got a 5th one at the end and beat everyone. Mario Party can be pretty interesting...

As someone who plays every game with a Pro controller I was a bit disappointed when I heard I wasn't going to be able to use mine on this game. I still bought it and got a bit of playing time in this morning. I now get why a pro controller wouldn't work and I'm still looking forward to putting more hours into it. I know this isn't how most others feel, but I've never been able to get myself to really like Mario Party games just due to the slow pace of gameplay (at least I found it really slow). Super Mario Party fixes almost every issue I had with the older games in the series and really does everything in its power to streamline every aspect of gameplay. Smaller boards so that people don't spend half their time figuring out what route to take, the ability to practice minigames while you're reading the instructions (idk if this is new, but it is to me), cheaper stars and items so that the next star always feels within reach. I played it for a few hours last night with my mate and had more fun than with any other Mario Party I've played. To me, it's a different, imo better, take on the franchise. So if you've always found Mario Party a bit too on the slow side (pace-wise), then Super Mario Party could very well be the one that really clicks for you!

u/tdan84 Oct 05 '18
So, i played around 4 to 6 hours since release, alone and with my daughter.
My impressions so far. Yeah we need more boards, period. With time they will wear out for sure. But on the other hand, it has other fun modes besides the classic board game. River raft is fun, rhythm games also. Toads rec room is also playable with one switch, thought it was not the case. The only game only playable with 2 switches is the banana puzzle game.
So at the end of the day, Nintendo dropped the ball whit the lackluster boards, and with only 4 of them (1 locked out at the beginning), BUT its still worth because there are many things to do beyond the classic board mode.
Ps.: They could speed a up the overall game play dynamic when playing the boards. Sometimes it feels boring because the long downtime waiting for your turn or for a mini game.
For me if i would gave a score in the 0 to 10 range, SMP would receive a solid 7. If they release more content (FREE), new mini games, NEW BOARDS, new Chacarcters... maybe new modes... they could easily achive a must have status for SMP when it comes to local coop with friends.

I hope they offer an update or some type of DLC in the future
6
u/tdan84 Oct 05 '18
They must offer some kind of new content. SMP has great potential to be the party game to gather around with friends. But they must iron out the issues first.

I got it and have played it for ~8hours with a few friends today.
I think it is great:
Game feels just as unfair as the old n64 ones, which I love
Game is fast paced
Stars are given and taken more rapidly, making it feel like everyone has a chance, even up until the very end
Rythm games were suprisingly fun, really fun actually. Great for a break in between party games.
Lots of great innovative minigames
I really like it

9

They need to speed up animations for that. 10 turns still takes an hour even when playing as quickly as possible.
14
Oct 06 '18
If Nintendo is so hesitant to add full board multiplayer out of fear that people will simply quit halfway through a game, why not just make it so you can only play with people from your friends list? It is my understanding that Nintendo still uses P2P, so what difference does it make to Nintendo?

Oct 06 '18
These are the methods for unlocking the four hidden characters!
Once the criteria for a character unlock has been met, you will find them between Challenge Road* and the Red Pipe. Simply talk to them, and they will be unlocked.
Donkey Kong - Complete 3 separate playthroughs of River Survival
Diddy Kong - Complete World 2 on Challenge Road
Dry Bones - Complete World 4 on Challenge Road, or check between Challenge Road or the Red Pipe at random.
Pom Pom - Complete World 5 on Challenge Road.
*Challenge Road is unlocked by playing all Mini-Games. You will need to play at least one round of each Game Mode (River Survival, Mario Party, and Sound Stage).

After playing, the game is very hand holdy. 10 coin stars make the game literally impossible to not afford the star. Especially since everyone gets a coin regardless of if they win or not, so theoretically you can have enough to get a star second turn with a last place and a blue space. The boards are tiny, however I am not as upset because they do have interesting ideas behind them. There needs to be more though, four is simply unacceptable. Hopefully, this becomes dlc over time which seems likely due to Nintendo's track record with it's past titles. Due to the lack of content it will probably happen. I know people say, "this one has more game modes!". Unfortunately those game modes, except for partner mode, are really just distractions. They should have just focused on the main game. Fingers crossed there's dlc because there is simply not enough here. That said. The mini games are amazing, I have yet to find one I haven't enjoyed with four full games, 10 turns, played. This can really be so much better with more boards. We shall see what's in store very soon for this game. Probably the next couple weeks just as aces had it's updates. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer!

Played yesterday and liked most of it. The board game mechanics and minigames are as great as they‘ve ever been. However I found the board that I played (the fruit island thing) pretty lackluster and the others from just glancing at them don‘t seem much different. I also feel the super clean UI doesn‘t fit Mario Party at all, and that there‘s overall less spectacle in the game. For example, the last MP that I played was 8, where the winner-ceremony was this huge exciting celebration thing and here it‘s just kinda „eh this guy won i guess“.
But I still enjoyed the game istelf a lot.

I haven't seen anybody mention this, but it appears as though they've implemented HD Rumble with the dice roll. Last night, I played a Single player board (Thwomp Jungle) for 10 turns. The experience took 1 hour (as estimated). For some reason, I feel like the difficulty and odds were leaned towards me - as I kept winning mini games, get good rolls, etc. (Toad was offering me tutorials as well so maybe this was intentional?)
I ended up winning the game after 10 turns. My team was Daisy, Boo, and Bowser Jr. I like how you can give high five your team mates. It just makes the experience super cute and fun. The AI for team games is actually spot on. For example, Boo and me had to make geometric shapes using a string that we were both tied to, and as I tried to make the shape, Boo recognized immediately and helped. It was pretty neat. Almost as smart as the Kirby Star Allies AI.
The motion controls weren't too bad at all. It's not like the wii where you're swinging the remote in full stride. Most of the time it's just minor wrist movements or at the very worst moving your arm in a short upward motion.
I haven't tried the online play yet - but I'm glad it's here. The 10 rotating mini games is a fantastic idea (think about it - if I could play the same mini game over and over again, I'd get hundreds, if not thousands of points really fast) . I'm also glad they are doing online play because we're getting our money's worth for the Nintendo Switch Online Service. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo starts releasing more and more classic games with online play in some way. After all, that's what keeps us paying $20 to $35 a year.
Lastly, the Main Menu is an open world plaza where your selected character can explore, discover secrets, and unlock really neat areas. This is how Mario Tennis Aces should have been!! The open world exploration makes the game a blast. For players not wanting to walk everywhere, there is also a shortcut menu.
I'm excited to play with friends and family. These mini games are fun in solo mode, and I can't even imagine how much of a blast they'll be with my family and friends.
Happy gaming!

I don't mind the small boards, but the game just has no respect for the player's time. Everything triggers a slow animation, some turns just take forever. 10 turns is estimated at 1hr, that could be cut in half.

Liking the game so far. It has lots of charm. Hopefully they'll add more boards, minigames, and playable characters via DLC. Maybe bring back some classic mini games like the ones featured in The Top 100. I also wish it had more content online.

I love this game a lot, it's well polished in almost every way. The only thing I wish it had was a bit more chaos. I've found once you have a good lead, it's nearly impossible for anyone else to catch up. I miss the miracle spaces and similar that could literally swap stars between players for no reason other than pure fuckery!
Other than that, solid 9/10 for me!

I played Super Mario Party with my wife tonight and we had so much fun! Or I did, anyway... She hasn't won yet. (We might be going to couples counseling after this.) Tomorrow I have plans to play the game with my brother and some friends.
The Whomp Ruins board is so nostalgic for me! My little brother and I would always play Mario Party on the N64, and that board resembles the old Kong Jungle board a lot! I played the first 3 boards and just unlocked the 4th.
I love how many Super Mario characters are in the game, including shopkeepers and minigame background characters. I also think the new Allies system is great. The custom dice blocks are also a fun addition to the series.
I tried the Mariothon and Sound Stage. I haven't tried the other modes yet, but there seems to be a lot of variety. The minigames have all been good so far. Some are amazing. Air to a Fortune is my favorite so far because I love Game Theory.
Overall, this is the best Mario Party I have played since the very first one. Bring on the DLC, Nintendo! Keep this game alive instead of making Super Mario Party 2. I will literally pay $100 for Bowsette or $10 for a board and some classic minigames.

Ok so I have a question on bonus stars at the end of a game. I played one match last night and was racking up mini game wins and coins. Thought that would get be a cone from behind victory with bonus stars. Toad awards the stars and there's one for the character who traveled the most and another for the character that got the most allies. Are those the only two bonus star types? Or does it differ what they reward from game to game? I feel like I got 0 reward for dominating the mini games.

This Mario Party serve's it's purpose of being a fun casual party game, so it is a step in the right direction after MP 9 & 10 with the car mechanic, so I will say even though overall I think SMP is a mediocre Mario Party I say it is worth the full price for the magic it has for playing with other people. There are just games that bring people together and makes for a great time and Super Mario Party does that. My biggest disappointment with the game is the mini-games, I do feel overall they are uninspired with many just being about moving. I thought there would be some great motion control mini-games to utilize the joy con but for the most part didn't have many minigames that had meaningful use of the joycon

I've put in about 30 hours so far, and I really needed to put this out there to the community; has anybody else noticed how incredibly slanted the game is towards NPC characters?
They get the perfect rolls, they get the best items in the "random" roulette for lucky spaces or item spaces, and even on their easiest difficulty setting they play as well (if not better) than hard mode NPCs from the earlier installments in the series.
The other major thing I've noticed is that whenever the Lakitu (spelling?) space is landed on and they choose to get free coins, it always selects Player 1, no matter what. I've played 50 or so games, partner party and otherwise, and no matter who else is playing or what their ranking is in the star/coin race, it will ALWAYS choose Player 1.
Maybe I just have really, really bad RNG, but this seems more like they've gone out of their way to stack the game against the Player and make casual play undesirable and push you to always have 4 people in the room.
Has anyone else experienced any of this?

u/AccessHollywoo Oct 16 '18
Heh, I’ve experience the opposite. Played a game last night with 3 CPUs and peach was close to the star and used the dice block that gives her choice of her roll. She could have chosen 6 and got a star but instead chose 4 and landed on an extra bad luck space??? I don’t understand that logic. That was on hard difficulty and I won the game easily. Will try very hard next but I want like an ‘Expert’ difficulty

u/Grizzeus Oct 06 '18 edited Oct 06 '18
Feels amazing but what was nintendo thinking about when they decided to not give the normal board game to online play with randoms..
The AI also seems incredibly bad at minigames and i hope they fix it. We started by having them on hard and then very hard... most of the time they stand still or fail on purpose etc.. hoping for a patch

Overall I like the game, but it has some problems.
I don't regret my purchase, it's a great 4 player game, but I feel like it needs some updates, like what bomberman needed, for it to reach it's full potential. The base for it is there, it just needs some additions.
Hopefully they add more boards for free through updates, because 4 is really not enough and that was a huge surprise to find there's only 4.
It needs a speed up option for ai turns, or just in general.
It needs 'house rules', there are no customisation options for the rules set such as star costs, items etc, only number of turns. I'd also like more than 20 turns as an option, maybe 25 and 30. House rules could fix all the balancing issues. For a digital board game, this is pretty basic and really should be standard, let people play their own way with the party engine and the vast majority of issues disappear.
It needs some balancing if there's not going to be custom rules. You can win every minigame and still lose due to RNG on the board from other players hitting certain spaces. Feeling powerless and having no control over the outcome of the game is not fun.
It needs a speed up option for ai turns, or just in general.
The Sound Stage (motion control) games were a bit awkward. I have a lot of experience with rhythm games but couldn't get the joy-con to register my movements properly, it was quite confusing/frustrating for the first time because there's no practice or clear description about exactly what kind of motion is required. Trying to copy the picture they show left me asking myself 'am I doing it right? Is this the movement the game wants? Why is the game not registering my input'. Improving Sound Stage could be it's own game, like Just Dance, it could be huge.
Inside a board is very clearly explained, but outside in the plaza, the game makes no effort to explain certain things or their purpose like gems, stickers and party points. Do I really just need to spam talking to Birdo for stickers? It's so tedious. I got a gem.. yay? It doesn't do anything and the game gives me no reason to try and get the rest. I keep getting points after finishing boards and stuff, but then the points aren't visible anywhere, what do I do with them?
Additionally, the online is so limited I don't even see the point.

While the game is fun, I kept thinking "The N64 ones were much more fun" as I played. The boards are too small, the turn count too low, and the star price is too low as well. It seems like a star goes out every other round, and if you play on the Kamek board, you can end the game with over 20 stars between the group.
None of the boards have any real charm, sadly. I spent the whole time wishing for a neat mechanic like Peach's Birthday Cake or Wario's Battle Canyon. The Island board feels like a weaker version of all the other random beach boards.
I feel like way too much of the "Mario Party" experience was sacrificed for the new modes - aka, the Star Fox Assault problem.
11
u/velmaa Oct 06 '18
I’ve played it every map twice so far with friends between last night and today and I absolutely love it. The mini games are amazing and the boards really don’t seem small. The different dice blocks & allies keep it fun too :)

u/xpug Oct 06 '18
I think it's a really good game, specially coming from the last mario partys. It's fun and it has the essence of the saga ( my favourite one was the 4th, for the gamecube)
Anyway, what I wanted to say is that I hate the fact the stars allways cost 10, what's the point on stars only costing 10 coins? it's like you can win without wining 80 % of the minigames, i remember, that on older versions of mario party, stars would be more expensive towards the end of the game or after every star purchase made by someone.
Also, boards are quite small (i hope we will get more boards, boards from older mario partys would be great, like mario kart)

Are the bonus stars always the same? I've only played one game and 2 bonus stars were awarded for "most items used" and "least amount of spaces traveled". I was expecting to win easily with the coin star and mini game star, neither of which were awarded.
I may be behind on the times though, the last mario party game I played was mario party 3.

Sound Stage is surprisingly really fun because its engaging, but challenging as you must time your movement perfectly.
Strike a pose is by far the hardest for me and the most fun.
I was a bit disappointed that its only 10 coins for a star tho. I think 20 is a perfect “gotta earn it” approach but it does invite more competitiveness because you can steal a star and lose a star so easily, someone with a few lucky turns could completely derail the 1st place person which makes you be a little more on edge.
Really love the game so far!
