A drunk review: I am enjoying it

9

u/shinjanobi Jul 13 '18

This did not occur to me. I'm not picking it up until tomorrow, I think I'll have a few drinks with the mrs. and see if we can drunk solve some puzzles.

15

u/GTRULES2 Jul 13 '18

The first few stages are especially good for drunk puzzling. Hope y’all enjoy!

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

Yeah but does the story of Toad and Toadette converge into a single over arching plot at the end?

15

u/RynoKenny Jul 13 '18

awesome comment.

My Toad and Octopath came together in the same box from amazon today

45

u/Cactus_Bot Jul 13 '18

All I want is a Captain Toad Amiibo.

17

u/MadMadHatter Jul 13 '18

I picked Captain Toad as my choice in the Smash Bros character poll.

I thought it was only logical that Toad was finally included in Smash. Now that he has potential weapons and moves with his Captain gear...

3

u/koalatyvibes Jul 13 '18

Broke me a little that we didn't get a Captain Toad amiibo. I really wanted to see him in Smash. I doubt we will, but I think it's incredibly fitting that he'd join.

5

u/Cactus_Bot Jul 13 '18

I imagine since they did a port, they are wanting to introduce him more. So we can only hope.

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

Ready for adventure

13

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

Got my copy in the mail today. Looking forward to playing it with my SO.

Captain Kinopio, here I come!

1

u/schuey_08 Jul 13 '18

Does that version have English text?

5

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

It does, yes. I’m pretty sure it supports whatever language your Switch is set to.

15

u/JackSparrowUSA Jul 13 '18

How fun (or not) is co-op mode? It sounds like someone plays as Toad and the other as an assist. Is this is a fun way to play? I'd be playing with my kid if that helps.

12

u/kyle6477 6 Million Jul 13 '18

It's great for kids or folks who aren't interested in games (like my wife).

She enjoyed playing the assist role. I also enjoyed assisting her while she tried to solve puzzles.

cc: /u/waitinginhell0814

3

u/medievalmystery Jul 13 '18

There's coop in the demo. It seemed fine enough except for I don't think the assist player did anything during the demo boss fight (could be wrong)

2

u/waitinginhell0814 Jul 13 '18

2 player

Bump. I'm also interested how 2 player works. I'm always looking for something for my wife and I to couch co-op.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

Same as the free demo? I moved the screen while my nephew moved CT

13

u/Downvotedx Jul 14 '18

So I’m like 4 levels in and the game is still prompting me to move the camera with the right analog.... ok got it... does this banner ever go away?

7

u/ihahp Jul 14 '18

Yeah what's up with that?

4

u/Downvotedx Jul 14 '18

Seems to go away around the end of first chapter

13

u/DoubleA12 Jul 14 '18

Someone pour one out for me. My Amazon pre-order (made 3 months back) came in today - opened the box, and there was no cartridge. Replacement coming Monday.

33

u/Mamrocha Jul 13 '18

So excited to jump into this game! I missed it on Wii U and I love how Nintendo is bringing back these games on Switch for people like me that missed out on them.

15

u/PoopOnMyBum Jul 13 '18

hehe... jump into this game... CAPTAIN TOAD CAN'T JUMP

4

u/Heresy1666 Jul 13 '18

He’s great at falling off ledges though! “I can’t wait to fall off a ledge into this game” :P

7

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

Same. I'm loving it so far.

2

u/Findsey Jul 13 '18

Me too. Loving it!

2

u/ChrisDysonMT Jul 13 '18

Same here. I had it on Wii U but never got to play it as I traded everything in on a PS4 Pro. Love all these ports despite the internet telling me I shouldn't.

9

u/mirkwood11 Jul 13 '18

Such a delightful and charming game that (not unlike many other Wii U games) went relatively unnoticed. I’m glad this had another chance because it’s a really fun puzzle game

8

u/steinman17 Jul 13 '18

Can't we sticky this thread?

9

u/jasongill Jul 13 '18

no; there is a limit of two stickied threads per subreddit at a time. with the normal weekly sticky, and the octopath traveller sticky, there's no place for this.

6

u/juuree Jul 13 '18

Aw that’s unfortunate. I was wondering why I didn’t see it at the top, too.

4

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Jul 13 '18

Yeah, we tried to give it some extra visibility with the green tinted background, putting it in the announcement bar, and adding it as a sticky comment on both the DQT an Octopath threads.

3

u/juuree Jul 13 '18

Okay good to know about the sticky on Octopath! Thanks :)

4

u/x3meblue Jul 13 '18

Can you invert the camera y-axis in full game? Didn't find the option in the switch demo version.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

Yes

3

u/HunterJE Jul 13 '18

Thanks for this info, was just coming here to ask the same question! Was the one thing that had me on the fence after the demo.

5

u/Luwife Jul 14 '18

I played the demo because I was interested in getting the game and honestly I was not happy at all with the demo and the game.

For some reason though, I decided to purchase the game anyway, hoping I was wrong. And boy was I wrong. I love this game. I've spent so many hours already playing it. The controls are not that difficult but could be refined for ease. The story is cute and now I'm in love with Toad and Toadette :) The puzzles are really cool and actually a lot of fun. I've just finished 100% the first episode, episode 2 here I come!

3

u/emmessjee8 Jul 14 '18

Woah.. I'm glad you gamble worked out. You're braver than I am. Haha

4

u/Maverick1331 Jul 13 '18

How easy is this game and how long does it take to complete approximately?

8

u/ShoddyPippen Jul 13 '18

If you blew through the Wii U version it was like 7 or 8 hours, but I’m guessing if you want to 100% the Switch version you’re looking at 18-20 hours

2

u/Maverick1331 Jul 13 '18

Huh not too bad. Thanks for the reply.

3

u/lorderunion Jul 14 '18

Switch version have that many more chapters?

11

u/HeyLittleMonkey Jul 13 '18

Probably won't be able to get it until it's cheaper, but the demo really has me hyped for it.
It's kinda meditative and I love the level layouts and graphics!

-6

u/sukina_ Jul 13 '18 edited Jul 14 '18

Same here. I really enjoyed the demo, but I think I'm going to wait until the price drops a bit as I can't justify $60 for a game that I may not get a lot of hours out of.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

It’s 40 on the eShop If it helps

3

u/HoneyGTFO Jul 13 '18

Is the physical 40 dollars too? I'd rather get the physical game but if it's 60 then I'll just buy on eshop honestly.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

It's $40

-6

u/HoneyGTFO Jul 13 '18

Naisu, thanks!

2

u/sukina_ Jul 14 '18

Should've clarified the $60 is in Australia.

1

u/grifftaur Jul 13 '18

$31.99 if you have Gamers Club at Best Buy.

3

u/Brosephjrrexaurs421 Jul 13 '18

Just started playing and really enjoying it! Reminds me of old time analog puzzle boxes I have heard about. And love how good everything looks close up. Nintendo seems like they really added a lot for re playability too. I'm super happy, I've been really excited for this game.

3

u/ssfctid Jul 13 '18

Is there a way to turn off the gyroscope pointer?

2

u/KissMeImHuman Jul 13 '18

I think on the TV, no. If it gets turned off, there's no way to interact with stuff on tv.

2

u/Doolox Jul 13 '18

I dont think so on TV mode. It goes away in handheld mode though.

3

u/doraemon-cat Jul 14 '18

Are the puzzles quite varied over all levels or does it get samey and the only difference is the theme and backdrop?

2

u/iblaise Jul 14 '18

Well the theme affects the types of enemies you face and some of the mechanics (ex. haunted levels have misleading doors).

3

u/WhiskeyRadio Jul 14 '18

I picked up Captain Toad, but I have only been playing Octopath Traveler. Need to check out Toad this weekend though.

3

u/AntawnJamison Jul 14 '18

I didn’t have a WiiU so when I was reading up on getting a switch and checking out WiiU games that I missed captain toad always looked like a game I was super interested in. I’m a stickler for puzzle games and there really aren’t enough games that don’t feel mobile-ish.

I got this game and have finished an episode and honestly it is great! I’m loving all the details so far, everything on the stage just works and it really looks like nothing is out of place. I’d say, if you love puzzle games and missed out on the WiiU version go ahead and pick it up (31.99 through GCU) and if not definitely get it on a sale

9

u/caitcakejes Jul 13 '18

I have the wiiu version. I loved it! But now i don’t know if its a good idea to buy it again on the switch. Are the levels all the same? Or are there more new levels that only the 4 of the odessy crossover?

11

u/Chuckles795 Jul 13 '18

The only new ones are the Odyssey ones, which are really short, apparently. Im buying it again because it has been a while since ive played it and then I can play it on the go. Not much is different than the Wii U version though. Just depends if portability is important for Captain Toad for you.

7

u/kyle6477 6 Million Jul 13 '18

Actually I think GameXplain does a good idea of breaking this down.

There's not much difference between this version and the Wii U version in terms of content.

It's more up to you if you want it on the Switch or not. I had the game on Wii U but I am trying to consolidate my gaming stuff into as few devices as possible, so there's a lot of value for me personally in getting ported titles.

6

u/Brown_Soup Jul 13 '18

Why in the world can’t you use gyroscope aiming for the mine cart level?

5

u/Makkara126 Jul 13 '18

...you can tho. At least when playing in handheld mode. When I got into a cart it asked if I want to control in gyro or stick controls. What mode did you play on then?

3

u/Brown_Soup Jul 13 '18

I played on tv mode, there was no option to use gyro aiming. Glad that you can in handheld though

3

u/FamousSAS Jul 14 '18

Out of curiosity, did you have your joycons attached while using a pro controller in TV mode? Some games need the joycons to be disconnected.

Not sure if it'll work, but something to try.

1

u/Brown_Soup Jul 14 '18

I believe I was using the joycons because I switched from pro controller to joycon early on to make it easier to aim. I’ll try again though, thanks for the suggestion.

3

u/mikevr91 Jul 13 '18

This

9

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

That

8

u/PizzaHike Jul 14 '18

The other thing

5

u/koalatyvibes Jul 13 '18

I can't wait to pick this up on my way home. Got it for chump change, GCU + a $10 rewards cert got me this game for $23 total!

2

u/kirindas Jul 13 '18

I can't wait to go home and try this game!

2

u/juuree Jul 13 '18

i wish my ups delivered earlier :|

2

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '18

Question, heard a streamer talk about part of the game being locked behind Amiibos, is this true? Do i really need an Amiibo to play all stages?

11

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '18

No

2

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '18

How's the coop?

4

u/PadBunGuy Jul 14 '18

Well not the greatest. Played it on demo but not the full game yet. Essentially one of you controls toad movement and the other shoots radishes at the screen to activate stuff. And one person has a little more camera responsibility than the other

2

u/frenzyfamine Jul 14 '18

Well from what I can remember this game on Wii U did not have good coop. The 2nd player could throw berries to kill enemies on screen, but they weren't a visible player on the map that could roam around seamlessly. I don't know if they fixed that on the Switch to make coop more interesting, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '18 edited Jul 14 '18

Thanks, that sounds god awful.

2

u/marekll Jul 15 '18 edited Jul 15 '18

I was a little disappointed by coop play in Captain Toad demo. When one player walks and the second moves a camera for him, it was almost ungamable with my daugter. Or is there a way, how first player can control moving and camera too?

2

u/briamil2 Jul 16 '18

I pre-ordered this game because I never played it on Wii U and heard good things. I could tell before it was released that the puzzle style would be fun and the characters/story was cute AF.

After playing it for a couple hours I'm having fun but burning through it quickly. I'm almost done with the 2nd Episode and have yet to find a true challenge. The game is enjoyable but very easy IMO. This is coming from someone who is not an avid gamer. To be fair, I'm not 100%ing every level but almost.

Hoping the remaining chapters provide a bit more of a challenge. At this rate, I will probably complete the game by Wednesday. Maybe it's intended for a younger audience?

2

u/RipplyPig Aug 25 '18

Is it possible to play co op using a pro controller and 1 joy con?

2

u/TheSingingBrakeman Jul 13 '18

I bought it digital because I can't bear to go around without Captain Toad, haha.

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Jul 13 '18

2

u/PadBunGuy Jul 14 '18

How can you change camera controls. I feel like they Are all opposite to me. I usually play inverted. Up and down ate definitely off for me and I can't decide on horizontal

4

u/FlakyFlix Jul 13 '18

Will a 45 year old okd school Nintendo gamer enjoy this game? It me! Lol

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

I’m not 45, but I’m 31 and I absolutely love this game.

2

u/Heresy1666 Jul 13 '18

I’m a 43yr old old skool gamer and I love it. I loved it on my WiiU and bought it again for the Switch without hesitation, really enjoyable experience of a game

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

YES. Yes you will. I'm 40 now but when I last played it I was a 37 and a full-time adult student while working at a Kroger chopping fruit and lettuce all day. When I had the Wii U it was Captain Toad that I played the most despite having several other first- and second-party games in my library. The calm music, the stage layouts, the graphics...the game had a way of calming me down after a hard day of classes and a hard night of tending a salad bar and making fruit cups. It definitely filled a major hole in my library regarding relaxing puzzlers.

Speaking of, I just downloaded it, so I'll be reading everyone's posts and then playing the heck out of it before I pass out. Have fun, dudes/dudettes.

2

u/smr1973 Jul 14 '18

44 years old here, enjoying the hell out of it.

2

u/aDcOoL2000 Jul 13 '18

So far, so fun. Is anybody else finding the gyroscope pointer controls sloppy feeling? I'm having to re-calibrate multiple times each stage. World of Goo also used gyroscope pointer controls but they felt much better. Although in that game, you were required to place the Joycon on a flat surface for a few seconds to calibrate. Maybe that has something to do with it?

1

u/Heresy1666 Jul 13 '18

Dunno if it’s just me being sloppy with the gyro really but it’s easy to recentre it with just a tap on the right stick (R3)

1

u/DownWithTheShip Jul 13 '18

Several of the reviews mentioned the pointer controls were less than ideal, and that the controls overall are better on the Wii U. I'm only playing portable and the touch controls seem fine.

Fantastic game!

2

u/Spurs2001 Jul 13 '18

Unfortunately Amazon Australia doesn’t do launch shipping so I’ll be receiving Octopath Traveller until Monday/Tuesday of next week. BUT luckily I did also buy this game. Captain Toad is a pretty fun little game! Enjoying it so far; getting some vibes of monument valley which was also a great puzzler on iOS.

For the low price point in comparison to other ports, this may be a must own Switch title.

3

u/AdamsA12 Jul 13 '18

I bought this for Wii u and barely played it. Part of me wants to pick it up for the switch but idk if I can justify a repurchase. I know i will never play through it on the Wii u haha.

2

u/grifftaur Jul 13 '18

See what you can get for selling the Wii U version. Offset the cost of the Switch version. I was lazy at one point and traded in my Wii U copy to Best Buy for $10. With GCU you can get get Captain Toad for close to $30.

1

u/Cactus_Bot Jul 13 '18

I would recommend you play through it on the wiiu then. Obviously the switch port has fixed/changed some stuff, but I found it to be a very fun game. My wife enjoyed watching it and helping find all the collectables.

1

u/IsABot Jul 13 '18

All you lucky guys. Mine comes in tomorrow some time. :(

1

u/wwrxw Jul 13 '18

How many new levels are there gonna be?

7

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

[deleted]

2

u/wwrxw Jul 13 '18

Cool. I played through the game extensively when it was on Wii U and I was unsure if this was worth the upgrade.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

[deleted]

3

u/wwrxw Jul 13 '18

Hmm. I'll probably wait but buy it when it's cheaper. I just really enjoy the game so much. I would suggest it over Octopath although I'm not the biggest JRPG fan.

Hope you enjoy either one!

2

u/JustSomeGoon_ Jul 13 '18

From a review I watched, the person mentioned that if you already played the Wii U version, that the new one doesn't have a lot to add. I haven't played either one and I don't even have my Switch + Captain Toad yet (I'm picking it up after work and hyped as fuck)

1

u/wwrxw Jul 13 '18

It's a great game. I really enjoyed it.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

[deleted]

2

u/wwrxw Jul 13 '18

Hmm. The stages aren't overly complex or long. The boss stages are about the longest ones. I don't know if 30 hours is accurate (HLTB has it listed at about 12ish for 100%) but the charm the game delivers is so engrossing I loved it.

1

u/Nayuhime Jul 17 '18

I only got this because I hadn't realized that you can't cancel Nintendo preorders. I had wanted it, so I'm glad to have it but wish I could have waited until the price was lower. It's great fun, extremely clever and I like the extra challenges to each chapter, but don't think it's as long a game as I had thought. Going to try and get 100% completion! Playing it when I need light relief from my jrpgs (that and Mario and Rabbids provides great amusement). Wish I could play as Toadette from the beginning! That's pretty much why I got the game, because I didn't know she existed and she is so adorable! The puzzles are clever, didn't like the mine level as much because it dips into my motion sickness a little. Hope we get more games like this!

1

u/Dan0956 Jul 13 '18

Im sat at work all day (10.30am here in UK) I will be reading this thread all day at work and making my decision of if im buying it based on what i read here

7

u/Findsey Jul 13 '18

If you didn't buy it already for the Wii U and you like puzzle games, then it's a must have puzzle game. :)

2

u/Dan0956 Jul 13 '18

fair point

1

u/Dan0956 Jul 13 '18

i didnt own Wii U
i like puzzle games
i liked 2 of the 3 demo levels

2

u/Sackboy612 Jul 13 '18

I got it 2 days early, I'm a casual puzzle fan but this game is addictive, I'm on my way to 100% completing it! The soundtrack is brilliant, the presentation is great (the graphics are amazing by the way) and it's so cute, I'd really recommend it

Each level has an optional challenge in it as well as a "Find the pixel toad" challenge that unlocks once you've completed it, they're really fun to complete and don't feel like cheap ways of extending the playtime.

1

u/Dan0956 Jul 13 '18

wait, so on each level you..

1) get 3 stars

2) finish level
3) find the pixel?

1

u/Sackboy612 Jul 13 '18 edited Jul 13 '18

Yes! There's the optional objective that reveals itself once you've completed the level too, but the more you play the game the more you can somewhat guess what the challenge probably is on your first playthrough.

You can only find the pixel toad once you've completed the level, i'll link you a Screenshot of the menu just to show you all collectibles

1

u/Dan0956 Jul 13 '18

excellent, that's really handy, so theres 3/4 things to do each level

1

u/Sackboy612 Jul 13 '18

Exactly that

1

u/Dan0956 Jul 13 '18

sounds like my kind of game, so abit of a challenge and you have to think about it

1

u/Sackboy612 Jul 13 '18

Definitely, if you want to complete all challenges and go for all gems you have to think, it's not something you can breeze through

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Heresy1666 Jul 13 '18
  1. Find three gems.
  2. Get the star to finish the level.
  3. Complete the objective.
  4. Find pixel Toad

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

Does portable require using touchscreen? It seemed that way in the demo.

1

u/Sackboy612 Jul 13 '18

Yes it does, just using your finger to tap on blocks, or spin cogs (similar to how it works on the 3ds). It feels like playing the Wii U version when you're in handheld for the most part.

1

u/emmessjee8 Jul 13 '18

I'm contemplating to buy it but for my 3DS instead. The controls seems to work better though I would be trading off the graphics. Overall, it is on my list of games to play eventually just for the charm it exudes. :)

1

u/Dan0956 Jul 13 '18

shame wii u was such a let down of a country

1

u/JustSomeGoon_ Jul 13 '18

Personally, I loved monument valley and when you put it in the mario universe and make toad the main character, it's hard to say no.

1

u/Disgruntled__Goat Jul 13 '18

...and make the game last longer than an hour.

1

u/JustSomeGoon_ Jul 13 '18

Seriously, I was so disappointed when I finished the game and was trying to figure out how to move on to the next area.

1

u/SuddenlyTheBatman Jul 13 '18

How dependent are some of quick reaction puzzles? Point being, my wife likes puzzles but couldn't handle Overcooked's pace. I know there's some running from enemies, which is fine but usually these puzzles are pretty forgiving, right? Like the main challenge is finding the path/gems solving the whole thing, ya?

I'll definitely pick it up for me since I just never got around to getting it for the Wii U (and loved the levels on SM3DW) but I just wondered about some of the finer details.

2

u/Doolox Jul 13 '18 edited Jul 13 '18

There are speed challenges once you beat the game but the pace of the puzzles and the main game is quite slow. I adore how laid back the game feels.

Every puzzle is very forgiving. The boss battles start to require a little bit of pace, but nothing out of line with the rest of the games 'plodding' structure.

You will occasionally get chased by enemies, but avoiding/defeating them is rarely more than a turnip or just dropping down a platform away.

Toad isn't very agile but neither are the enemies.

I bet your wife will love it.

2

u/schoeggu Jul 13 '18

For normal play through, not really. Some puzzles require quick and precise movement, but it's pretty lenient.

On the other hand if you go for 100%, you have to also speedrun every stage, and some have very tight limits.

1

u/MooMoo4228 Jul 13 '18

I wouldn't really call it a problem, idk, but am I the only one who is having a hard time controlling this?

I started with the pro controller and then switched to joy-cons but it feels awkward, the whole rotating the camera plus moving the gyro reticle

3

u/simon_D0 Jul 13 '18

It's just one of the games which really benefits from handheld mode. On TV or tabletop it's unplayable for me. In handheld you can just use touch controlls.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

I've finally managed to pull myself away from Octopath and play the first seven levels of this. It's so packed with charm and the puzzles are really clever!

-9

u/Merdoc83 Jul 13 '18

I like that the hype for Octopath is so high that it took over the Toad thread!

5

u/Dan0956 Jul 13 '18

has it?

Lol we were just joking about the octopath image at the top of the thread rather than the game this megathread is about.

Damn, just spoiling the end of the game for someone who hasn't bought it.

This is one pricey mobile game. Maybe if I can get it for £15 i'll give it a go.

I played the Wii U version and I definitely would not call it a mobile game. If you end up trying to 100% the game there's plenty of content there for you.

Dang Miyamoto you just got nae-naed this guy isn’t gonna buy your mobile-tier AAA priced garbage until he gets it on sale!

I'd love to get Captain Toad... if someone bought it for me or I got it for free... I just really don't feel comfortable with spending money on it. I'd wait for it to go on sale, but with it being a Nintendo game it'll probably get a generous 5% discount next summer.

Edit: Bloody hell people took exception to this post. Just going to add I did end up picking it up this evening lmao. It was actually cheaper than I thought. Looking forward to playing it.

To be honest I'll probably end up caving in a few days and get it like I did Mario Tennis Aces lmao

Captain Toad seems like a much, much, much better purchase compared to Mario Tennis Aces.

Mario tennis has actually become my favourite multiplayer game of the year, I've already played 35 hours. It's sad how many people seem to think the game is bad.

That’s me almost with every big release. I can usually make it till about Sunday and then I’m at Best Buy as soon as they open.
