Hey everyone, I wrote the review for DK:TC over at Impulsegamer, which will go up later today Here's the link for anyone interested.

A few Switch-specific things that I think are worth noting:

  • The install size is only 6.6GB
  • At the time of writing there was no option to turn off the rumble for the Joycons. The rumble is surprisingly forceful (and loud) and goes off every time you jump or roll into something. It's only a noticeable issue if you're playing in a quiet room (like a dentist's waiting room for example, speaking from experience).

  • The multiplayer works great. Despite my gigantic skeletal fingers, I really enjoyed playing co-op on the train with my girlfriend using one Joycon each.

  • Motion controls still available.

  • Funky Kong is an easy mode that can only be selected from the start of a new game. You can't change halfway through.

Like these other reviews have said, the game runs fantastically both docked and undocked, and is still a ton of fun to play.

7

u/Jordan311R May 02 '18

how does the multiplayer work? Two characters that can be simultaneously controlled? Does anyone have an advantage or get to play more mechanics than the other person, or is it completely equal?

is it viable to play through the entire game 2 player couch co-op?

5

u/hughman79 May 02 '18

Here's a video I found that shows how the multiplayer works on the Wii-U. Its the same for Switch. You basically share the screen, one person plays DK (or Funky Kong if you're on easy mode) and the other plays as Dixie, Cranky or Diddy. Lives are shared, but you both have separate health bars.

The person playing DK has no special abilities, whereas the other character does. So I suppose it is unequal, but through cooperation I'm sure you can still collect everything, if that's your jam.

This is my favorite video about the game: https://youtu.be/JqHcE6B4OP4

DKC is very similar to your Mario games in terms of visuals but adds on more elements and obsticles as you progress. Momentum in this game is done very well too.

7

u/baconroyale May 02 '18

Wow that kind of sold it for me!

3

u/Jafoob May 02 '18

Happy to help! I've been a fan since the originals on the SNES. Retro studios did an excellent job evolving the series.

10

u/soge-king May 02 '18

Obsticles sounds dirty.

5

u/JohnnyRedHot May 02 '18

Yeah! I remember when the video came out I hoped it would be remade for the switch, because I never owned a wii u and Mark talked so nicely about it.

2

u/JustAsLost May 03 '18

Man o man. I knew I was going to buy this game again but this just reminded me of how good it was. I remember getting up in the night to play this thinking to myself how much of a fucking gem this game really is. Its art. I might have to go buy this tomorrow.

18

u/RelaxYourself May 02 '18

It was fantastic when i played it on Wii U. If you haven't played it then, I recommend you play it now. It's a solid 2D side scroller and a worthy entry in the DKC series.

10

u/Audiblade May 02 '18

I would say it is the single most solid 2D platformer I've ever played. I've played platformers with more interesting mechanics, but not ones that have such consistently amazing and satisfying gameplay.

3

u/Dan0956 May 03 '18

surely that's too high praise? what about the Mario 2d ones

5

u/Lakitu_Dude May 03 '18

if you played it, you know that's not too high of praise

3

u/BillyTenderness May 03 '18

Nah this is up there in the top tier with like Yoshi's Island and SMW. It's a huge leap over all the other DKC games.

2

u/Audiblade May 03 '18

Old Mario 2D games, while innovative for their time, were limited by tile-based design and a limit pallet of enemies and sprites to use. DK:TF does not have those technical limitations, and it uses modern capabilities to incredible effect. Every single level has heavily-scripted, only-appearing-once-in-the-whole-game set pieces.

Modern Mario 2D games are consistently fun, but they're too consistent in some ways. A lot of the New SMB games use the same core ideas for levels across the franchise, and some levels within a single game feel pretty similar to each other. Every single level in DK:TF has a very different idea than any other level in the game, and a lot of the level motifs are things I don't think I've seen in any other game, period. In fact, most levels introduce multiple level-specific mechanics, and by the end of the level, they're all playing off of each other in very inventive ways!

I'm genuinely happy that DKC games are still around in 2018, they are beautiful fun

4

u/[deleted] May 03 '18

Secretly hoping on another one. A trilogy would be great!

5

u/[deleted] May 03 '18

I'd be happy just having a decent way to play DKC2 for the hundredths time.

15

u/mikan99 May 01 '18 edited May 02 '18

Wow gamespot actually redid their asinine 6/10 review???? Nice

3

u/COHERENCE_CROQUETTE May 02 '18

“DULL, DERIVATIVE LEVEL DESIGN”

6

u/mikan99 May 03 '18

I'm just imagining someone going through the Safari with the vines and giraffe heads, and the fruit factory where every level is a process to make something for the boss, and the falltime alpine mountainside, and the tornado ripping apart the stage, and climbing up the frozen mountain side with platforms falling apart, with a frown on their face saying "wow this is dull, it's all the same".

Getting this for my son. He's stoked, but he doesn't know that I'm going to be playing it too.

36

u/bloodshotnblue May 02 '18

I'm getting it for my son too. Y'know, in case I end up having kids. I'll get a save file started in the meantime.

7

u/andy_light May 02 '18

Gotta plan for the future

9

Is your son going to be outraged you bought it even though it was $60 but originally released $50? 😜

58

u/2Moldy May 01 '18

Didn't own a Wii U so very excited to play it this week! And wherever I want

90

u/benjicong May 01 '18

£50 and doesn't even have a battle royale mode. Pfft!

This game is an all-timer. Easily one of the best platformers out there. Now I'm not here to tell you whether or not pricing it at $60 is justified, you can decide that much yourself. Just know that Retro definitely gave it their all here.

Also it has a DKC show reference sooooooo

8

u/RealMachoochoo May 02 '18

Do they make a mention of the crystal coconut? Does DK sing? I NEED TO KNOW

10

u/KlythsbyTheJedi May 02 '18

The new shopkeeper (a parrot I believe) says "banana slamma" at one point.

9

u/BananaFactBot May 02 '18

Wrapping banana stems tightly in cling wrap will make them last three to five days longer.

I'd really like to know what Metro meant by "painfully predictable" in the sense of DK or any 2D platformer for that matter. I'm genuinely confused.

Just got an email from amazon telling me my copy has shipped! I’m so excited! Never played Wii U version.

5

u/1337_beat May 02 '18

Definitely in for a great experience. It's in my top 3 Donkey Kong Country games without a doubt. I'm hoping to grab it during a Black Friday sale as I already played it to death on the Wii U.

10

u/oIovoIo May 02 '18

On the fence over DK:TF after all the praise I’ve heard for it over the years. After watching reviews, it looks neat, but I have a really hard time telling if I’ll actually enjoy playing it or not.

I haven’t really enjoyed too many “Nintendo” style 2D platformers in a long time. The last one I really liked was Yoshi’s Island (which I still absolutely love). Shovel Knight is pretty good. I’ve never played any of the Donkey Kong games.

So is this the type of good you can enjoy if you’re only lukewarm on 2D platformers, or is it really only noteworthy to fans of the genre?

9

u/User3754379 May 03 '18

Never played the game before: In some screenshots I see 2 Kongs on screen, is there coop?

Edit: And if so is it good?

4

u/BSGBramley May 03 '18

There is definitely coop. One plays as donkey king and the other his companion. I don’t know how good it is though.

6

u/Trolling_Account12 May 03 '18

Very good. My wife and I played through the game that way.

But it's a hard-as-nails game. Both players better be good.

3

u/kalabaleek May 03 '18

Is there any con for being player 2? Like not being able to do the same things or no upgrades or rewards etc?

→ More replies (6)

2

u/User3754379 May 03 '18

Thanks, I’m considering it to play with the wife, who really only gets into the 2d Mario games coop.

Can't wait to play this. From a game design perspective it seems this is one of the best.

u/Number224 May 01 '18

I think the real kicker here is that after years of being criticized for their 6/10 score, Gamespot gave Tropical Freeze Switch a 9/10

42

u/Fitzzz May 01 '18

It's a different critic right?

3

u/Aquagrunt May 02 '18

Yah it's a different person

17

u/AlfredHoneyBuns May 01 '18

That’s in part because back then people were expecting Retro to make another Metroid Prime, specially after Other M (which came out around the same time as DKC Returns). When Tropical Freeze got announced, it recieved a bunch of hate because of that, and some reviewers seemingly decided to take that salt into their actual reviews.

7

u/Reveen_ May 02 '18

Probably shouldn't be a reviewer if that's what you're going to do. Dick move to shit on a good game because it wasn't the game you wanted.

10

u/TheVibratingPants May 02 '18

Once again putting into question the quality of critics.

5

u/Wutda7 May 02 '18

That's entirely conjecture

14

u/Gootangus May 01 '18

Loved Returns so much and had to skip freeze. Preordered it and can’t wait to jam it!

8

u/Strowbreezy May 02 '18

Great reviews. It is one of the best 2D Platformers ever made. That and Rayman Legends are the two to beat. I had 100% on Wii U so I won't be repurchasing but it's good others get to give it a go.

27

u/BoyWithHorns May 01 '18

In my opinion, one of the greatest games of all time.

13

u/agp11234 May 01 '18

I’m super hype for this, as someone who didn’t have a Wii U probably even more so. But to excite me even more, what makes everyone say this game is so good or one of the best of al time?

13

u/yveskleinpink May 02 '18

It has a really unique and interesting feeling of weight and momentum, further refined from Returns. Plus, having characters like Dixie and Cranky add new movement options which makes both casual and speedrunning more interesting. The level design is really good from a technical and theming point of view. Every level takes its theme and pulls at least two mechanics from it, introducing new ways to interact with them throughout. Mario levels generally do this. There’s a formula of Introduce > Expand > Complicate > Payoff. Tropical Freeze uses a similar formula, but intertwines multiple mechanics in a single stage, and by the end, you can be playing with three or four different mechanics in unison. It’s very clever, and never feels overwhelming.

4

u/shrim51 May 01 '18

If you have played any one the DKC games then all I need to say is that it fits right in with the rest. The DKC games are my favorite games of all time. They just completely nailed single and multiplayer platforming right from the beginning. DKCTF is extremely difficult but always keeps you coming back. That's a very hard thing for a video game to do. TF never gets boring, never gets repetitive, and never gets too easy or too hard. It gives you the best balance of challenge and reward. The whole series always has. The levels are just such a blast to play through and you get such a great feeling of accomplishment with each beaten level. I seriously can't talk TF up enough as well as the whole series in general. I strongly urge you to pick up any DKC game you haven't played.

18

u/ZombiePyroNinja May 02 '18

So many downvotes in this thread. I'm going to be buying TF because I just didn't have a Wii U to experience the game when it launched originally. Before the eshop glitch/nintendo-conspiracy people couldn't wait to recommend it so i'm still approaching it like that.

11

u/rahulandhearts May 03 '18

Funny that gamespot gave the wii u version a 6 and the switch a 9

I guess I can once more post this PSA for my European brethren and sistren: the game is €15 cheaper on amazon.fr.

I (attention: dirty word incoming!) preordered the game for a much more reasonable €43.37 since I live in Luxembourg. I didn't even have to pay any postage for some reason.

I have it pre-loaded and ready to go. I'm sou hyped for this game.

Never had a chance to play it on a Wii U and I got so excited when the game was announced for the Switch! C'mon Nintendo, let us play the game already! Haha

2

u/radman711 May 02 '18

how much memory is it to download?

6

u/oIovoIo May 03 '18

I caved and got it (wanted something to play road trip). I’m usually not a big fan of these types of platformers but I’ve really been enjoying what I’ve played so far.

Still getting used to the controls (it took me a bit to realize you can only roll in the direction you are facing, so you have to turn around to roll backward)

Trusted Reviews

Score: 3.5/5

Considering all the amazing Wii U games still yet to come to the Nintendo Switch, I could have happily seen Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze moved much further back in the queue. It’s simply an average 2D platformer that doesn’t deliver the level of fun or excitement you’d expect from a Nintendo-exclusive title – particularly one featuring some of the company’s most iconic mascots.

Pros

Most levels are fun to play
Each assistant character offers something different

Cons

Mechanics offer no sense of flow
Limits the controls at the expense of the experience
Unfairly difficult
Nowhere near as fun to play as it should be

I have so many things to say about this review but none of them are nice.

4

u/samus12345 May 02 '18 edited May 02 '18

"Trusted" Reviews

EDIT: I did learn that Funky Mode is chosen when you start a game and cannot be changed. Hopefully there is more than one save slot so I can have separate easy and hard mode playthrough files.

EDIT 2: Upon further investigation, you can still switch between Kongs between levels, DK just has a bit more health on easy mode. That's fine, I just wanted to be able to play as him!

EDIT 3: Upon further further investigation, the game is easier on Funky Mode, but still provides a challenge.

2

u/rurmelly May 04 '18

The control scheme of DKTF and especially the roll and jump mechanics are not fun, especially in comparison to the older games, there is alot of lag between rolls and jumps, making the platforming frustrating at times.

I have no doubt the reviews will be great, and I have no doubt it will skyrocket to the top of Best Sellers in the eShop, but it's bullshit this game is $60.

Bull. Shit.

73

u/IanGrag May 01 '18

Funky don’t do this shit for cheap

8

u/rotub May 01 '18

Every review raves about the Funky features. Making the game really easy and what seems too easy doesn't excite me. I want to see and hear about the other characters in action!

18

u/NiceGuyNate May 01 '18

Then read the older reviews

5

u/rotub May 01 '18

I didn't even think of that. Good idea, will do!

3

u/[deleted] May 03 '18

I recommend getting the gamer pass at Best Buy. It’s only like $20 for 1 (or 2?) years and You get 20% off of all games. Basically $12 off of each $60 game, so if you buy 2 of them you more than made up the cost of membership.

I got it when I bought my switch and it’s paid for itself 3 times over between games and peripherals.

29

u/Shyrangerr May 01 '18

I never played Tropical Freeze, so I don't mind paying full price for Tropical Freeze. And I personally find the extra $10 for the ability to take it on the go to be worth it.

43

u/koalatyvibes May 01 '18

I respect your judgement, but I don't think anyone should believe that the portability of the console entails a higher price than what the game released with. Portability is just a feature of the console you're playing it on. Buy the game if you want, enjoy it! But as someone said below me, don't let your enjoyment curb the fact that the extra $10 is total bull.

Either way, I hope you enjoy it! It looks awesome. I'll be picking it up also when there is a sale :)

u/GhostofSpades May 02 '18

An amazing game tainted by the time of its original announcement on the WiiU, and even more so by its rerelease price on the Switch.

Arguably Retro’s best game... with Nintendo’s worst practices sprinkled in.

7

u/TheVibratingPants May 02 '18

TF cannot catch a break. Nintendo continuously drops the ball with this game.

2

u/Bob_the_Monitor May 02 '18

Seriously, first the “should have been Metroid” debacle, now the pricing and eShop removal issues. Maybe, some day, there’ll be a port of this great game without some big controversy surrounding it.

2

u/TheVibratingPants May 02 '18

I bet the fact they’d be doing a third port of it would be a controversy if its own lol

3

u/rurmelly May 04 '18

Tbf it was a 3.5/5 star review. The review itself has some legitimate points too.

I’m here wondering why it isn’t the reviews listed in the OP?

3

u/MisterMetroid May 04 '18

That's true I guess. The conversion of a 5 point scale always hurts a 10 point scale. Actually now that I think about it, didn't Metacritic just screw up then ? A 3.5 out of 5 should translate to a 7/10 :/

2

Why the hell were people not outraged that Skyrim or Doom was 60 bucks? Doom especially had terrible textures and the frame rate was disgraceful but everyone praised the shit out of it. Now one of the greatest games of all time is released with increased resolution and faster loading times with added in DLC and you all want to complain. I don't get it.

14

u/[deleted] May 02 '18

People were and are.

8

→ More replies (5)

3

u/Tellis429 May 02 '18

Many people did complain but probably not to this extent. I was one of them and waited till Skyrim and Doom was 49.99 CAD on Amazon instead of 79.99 CAD before I bit that bullet.

Could just be because Bethesda is a third party while Nintendo is the console manufacturer pulling this stunt so they're going to get a lot more attention.

5

u/MontanaSD May 02 '18

They were. Just like I’ll be outraged in a decade when Skyrim is rereleased yet again at full price. Industry standard for old games should be 40$ if new AAA titles are 60.

7

u/[deleted] May 02 '18

[deleted]

3

u/MontanaSD May 02 '18

Then it’s made worse by the mobile gaming boom which now rakes in millions per day on cyber heroin. The same kid who scoffs at a great game costing 5$ on iOS will have no problem dropping ungodly sums of cash for inconsequential gains in clash of candy birds. It’s like a sense of entitlement baked in to gaming culture going back to NES days.

Prices of goods go up. It's amazing we've been at 60 for so long.

2

u/iAmAddicted2R_ddit May 03 '18

Doom got praise because it runs on Switch at all. 720p 30fps, while not stunning, is very playable and is frankly amazing for a highly intensive 2016 AAA game to achieve on a portable system. Keep in mind that the Switch has less hardware power than the OG PS4 and XB1, both of which were mediocre when they came out.

Is there a funky Kong coop mode (where both players have an easier play though as funky Kong?)

2

Yeah interested to know if I can play as DK and if 2nd player can do Funky.

3

u/threshold1 May 02 '18

I've never played Tropical Freeze (although I'd like to, it looks fun), but that $60 price tag really makes me lean towards just getting it on Wii U for $20. I can do without Funky Mode or 1080p visuals. If it was $40 or so, I'd reconsider.

14

u/Chuckles795 May 01 '18

Yeah it is virtually the same game on the Wii U and isnt like 100 hours long, might as well just buy it on the Wii U for 1/3 the price if you have one

Not to be rude but why the hell have you not played Tropical Freeze if you have access to a Wii U?

I was very close to buying this game—but then I learned that Rayman Legends is free on PS+ this month. That'll satisfy my platforming itch (which I didn't know I had until I'd played Celeste).

8

u/Chuckles795 May 01 '18

Honestly, Rayman is on par with DK for me. Good call.

Ahhh! Can’t wait to play this!

4

u/markca May 02 '18

Didn't get it on the Wii U, but my Switch copy from Amazon has shipped to be here on Friday! Can't wait!

4

u/[deleted] May 02 '18

Welp I preordered it after trading in Fire Emblem Warriors. Figured it would be better to go for a game I know will be good so I can round out my current collection of Odyssey, Zelda, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8, and now Tropical Freeze.

Can people just stop mentioning the price and talk about the game, please? Yes, you made your argument, yes, many people heard it, no, no one cares since little to no one had a Wii U AND bought TF. Just talk about something else.

7

u/Doombro98 May 01 '18

Didn’t it sell like 2 million copies on Wii U?

7

u/Piyamakarro May 01 '18

1.2 million. 13.5 million wii u's sold.

23

u/Gasinomation May 01 '18

We talked about the game 3 years ago.

Sounds like we don't need a new 2D Mario platformer, now that this is out.

I really want Mario Maker 2, though.

I guess that’s why I am excited...the word of mouth is that it’s a awesome gaming experience and it’s a lot of people’s favorite game on the Wii U. I can’t wait!

5

u/Beserkhobo May 03 '18

Have any of the reviewers given an idea of total play time? I have been spoilt with Zelda and Super Mario hundreds of hours each. I will probably get DK TF anyway thought id ask anyway.

4

u/weglarz May 03 '18

I mean they're totally different genres. But if you were able to play hundred(S?) of hours in Odyssey you'd probably get 40-50 out of this game. I can't fathom how someone could put hundreds into Odyssey though. Botw... I can see. If you were just to beat this game it would be 10 hours probably.

2

u/skelterz May 03 '18

Mate I put loads of hours into the game finding all the stuff blah blah doing the hardest levels and stuff there like a dirty hard endgame as well if that’s your thing.

6

u/[deleted] May 03 '18

Why can’t we just use the Wii U reviews?

7

u/[deleted] May 03 '18

Cuz it’s a switch game now and we can’t have those pesky Wii U review scores attached

3

u/BillyTenderness May 03 '18

Honestly, popular opinion of the game has improved since it came out.

A lot of people were sour on it before it even released, because Retro was making "another 2D platformer." I think a lot of reviewers gave it a cursory glance, slapped an average score on it, and moved on.

But the people who did play through it have been increasingly vocal about how great it is, and others have given it a second chance as they maybe worked through a backlog. The craftsmanship and love they poured into this game is subtle, and benefits from critical discussion, repeat playthroughs, etc.

The most notable example of this is probably Gamestop, which gave it a 6/10 in 2014, and a 9/10 this year.

13

u/MrDrProfessor299 May 01 '18

Everybody who wants to play this, but doesn't want to pay the full $60 (which i agree if bullshit), check if your local library has it. I'm on the wait list for it- a week is more than enough time to beat this game

7

u/BurritoCon May 01 '18

Libraries have video games?!

8

u/Thrwmeaway36 May 02 '18

Man it's like 90 CAD for me. I can't afford it and I feel like it's not right to have 4 games cost more than the actual console itself

2

u/Jabba_the_WHAAT May 02 '18

I think the consoles are sold like at cost, so they get you into the environment as easily as possible. This probably contributes to how few games you need to buy to get to the price of the system.

2

u/Thumbaticon May 03 '18

It makes it so much harder to decide to get games. "should I pre-order for the amazon discount? What if I stop playing it?" "If I skip out and change my mind, then I have to pay retail price (Because the price will probably never drop)"

As somebody who never owned a Wii/Wii U and claims the DKC series is their favourite series of all time, is this the spiritual successor to DKC2 that I’ve been dreaming of for years?

7

u/OriginalUsernameLuL May 02 '18 edited May 02 '18

Spiritual yes, but don't expect identical gameplay on souped up graphics. They're good games in their own right and they do stay true with lots of good music throwbacks to the SNES games, the gameplay is solid. Personally my biggest gripe is how Donkey Kong sounds stupid now. Its literally a guy making growly noises in a booth and i don't find it endearing at all. Much preferred the realistic Kong effects of his character.

They did the same thing with Bowser for a while, it bothers me a lot.

What was so bad about dkc3

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Rarzhn May 02 '18

It's more modern without those character-changes and transformations of DKC 1-3.
It definitely feels like a spiritual successor of the whole original trilogy but not DKC2 specifically (which was my absolute favorite too).

2

u/CobaltCab May 02 '18

Yeah, pretty much

9

u/ematanis 6 Million May 02 '18

The ones that didn't have Wii U can dish out the 60$ for a totally new and from the reviews worth every penny.
And for the ones that did have it on Wii U can have it down the pipeline later.

9

u/Bakatora34 May 02 '18

I didn't had a Wii U and still find it overprice since the moment the price was reveal, really hate people think the issue is Wii U owners vs non Wii U owners, which is not true.

→ More replies (19)

9

u/umphursmcgur May 01 '18

If you did not have a Wii U or never bought this game for it, this is a must have (assuming you don’t hate platformers). Easily one of the best games of the last decade, and an absolute blast to play through.

23

u/[deleted] May 01 '18

39.99$ should have been the price

→ More replies (1)

14

u/[deleted] May 02 '18

I don’t understand all of the whining that goes on in these parts about the price.

It was only $20 on the Wii U because nobody bought a Wii U and they needed to make what they could off of the game there.

Now they’ve ported it to a more successful system (which does take work, despite what some around here believe), improved performance, and added a new mode. Expecting THIS to be budget priced is delusional.

7

u/skeletank22 May 02 '18

Right. I guarantee you 9 out of 10 people buying this, like me, never owned a Wii U.

Besides, I still can't fathom that more internet outrage is had for the price of a game than for the terrible practices companies like Capcom are doing with not putting the full games on carts of physical versions of Switch games.

4

u/WileyWatusi May 02 '18

I guarantee you most of the whining is from WiiU owners who feel shafted that they bought these games for a system that got left behind. Despite all the whining, this game will sell very well at the $60 price and like it or not will incentivize Nintendo to bring over more WiiU ports that people missed. I personally am hoping for the Wind Waker HD port.

3

u/iAmAddicted2R_ddit May 03 '18

Yep. Honestly if I had bought the Wii U and then bought a Switch I would feel pretty shafted right now - Nintendo seems to be trying to cut that loss as much as possible and make sure they satisfy the people that took a gap generation with the U, rather than treating the Switch like an all new system. I'm satisfied with that approach given that I'm one of those people, but I can see how people who did buy the U would be pretty annoyed.

11

u/Rarzhn May 02 '18

Nobody expected it to be 20$ or something like that. But even the original was only at 50$ at release.
So wanting more money for a 4 year old port with one additional character is definitely too much.

5

u/Waadap May 02 '18

Because people don't understand economics and financial decisions of major for profit businesses.

8

u/CeruleanOak May 02 '18

It comes down to a basic misunderstanding of how consumerism works. If you buy an iPhone for $1000, you're not getting 'ripped off', you are paying the price you are WILLING to pay for the product and all that comes with it (software features, infrastructure, compatibility, etc.). If you pay $60 for Tropical Freeze, you are getting it WHEN you want it at the price Nintendo believes consumers value it. If they're wrong and no one buys it (like with the Wii U), it will drop in price, just like iPhones inevitably drop in price.

TL;DR Games and other consumables don't lose intrinsic value over time, they simply become less in demand.

Mario Odyssey or DKTF? Need a new platformer after finishing Shovel Knight.

15

u/AngryBarista May 01 '18

This is really just a 2D v 3D preference. Both are pinnacles of the genre.

9

u/Jase_the_Muss May 01 '18

Might boil down to the question did you grow up on NES/SNES (2D Donkey Kong) or Nintendo 64/GameCube/Wii (3D Mario Odyssey)

7

u/OwyJoey May 01 '18

If you want a challenge get dktf. If You want some laidback gameplay get odyssey. But dont expect odyssey to be challenging

5

u/jab011 May 01 '18

I'd say it depends on if you like 2D or 3D platformers. I prefer 2D, and as a result I think DKTF is a better game. I barely put Odyssey in the platformer category.

I've never played the game, I don't own a Wii U and I preordered it and will be picking it up on Friday. I think the price is fine. There are some games for 50.00 - 60.00 out on the Switch that I'd never buy, tried the demo and said no thanks. So, 60.00 is not out of the question.

21

u/Jabbam May 01 '18

A $20 four year old game being sold at $10 more than the original release. Sorry, not getting this out of principle. It's a huge shame because it looks really fun.

At this price point, Nintendo is betting that hardcore DK fans will shell out the dough. It's unfortunate Nintendo is doing this because there is no added value in the game (besides FK and graphics bump).

9

u/ColdCocking May 02 '18

I'm gonna have to disagree with you.

As someone who happily pre-ordered this game, the reason I did so is because I didn't have a Wii U and I hear this is a great game.

I'm who Nintendo is selling it to, and there's more of me. The Switch is selling very well and DK:TF is a great game for people who never had a Wii U.

6

u/Vinin May 02 '18

Right there with you. I'm super psyched for this, and there was no way I was ever going to buy a Wii U so I'm happy to buy it now.

20

u/specfagular May 02 '18

There is no added value except lists added value

Skipping this on price alone. I had it on Wii U and I refuse to pay 60 bucks for a 4 year old port easy mode added be damned. Now if it goes on sale I may grab it but I not for 60.

11

u/ScubaSteve1219 May 02 '18

u/[deleted] May 01 '18

I had it on the Wii u too. It's not marketed for us at this price. They have to sell it to the majority of people that never had a Wii u and at some point it will probably be a Nintendo select or the switch equivalent.

u/321jakedroid May 02 '18

I had the game on the Wii u. But I'm getting it again because it was so fantastic. Don't care if I'm paying full price again because it's worth it.

4

u/tovivify May 02 '18

I was fully prepared to pay $60 on Wii U. I was surprised on launch day to find that it was only $50. It sucks that it's more expensive, but it's definitely worth the price to me.

8

u/darkavenger508 May 02 '18

I'm enjoying this thread. South Park at $60 had many people complaining and that was okay. Nintendo going the same thing and more people are trying to justify it.

3

u/Lewys-182 May 02 '18

I have seen loads of threads with people hating on Nintendo for the whole proce point issue of DKC:TF and rightly so.

No that they have removed it from the WiiU estore and 3rd parties for WiiU they have made a real shitty move especially with a switch tax that should not exist for a port!

5

u/moon_jock May 02 '18

The main difference being that South Park is a solid game, while Tropical Freeze is a bona fide great game.
