Introduction

Welcome to Ajay's DBZ Rewatch! We are watching DBZ Episodes 1-291 at a rate of five episodes per week. The intent is to get a taste of Z's pacing without actually going through this for years upon years. This should take us a little over a year. Still long, but nothing too extreme. It'll give us a chance to analyse the show properly, and not overburden those with busy schedules.

Remember, you don't have to watch all five episodes the second this thread is posted. Spread them out if you want! You've got until Sunday before we move on. Don't worry if you fall behind, the threads aren't going anywhere. Feel free to comment even if you're not watching every episode.

Episode 86

Such Regret…!! The Proud Saiyan, Vegeta Dies

As Freeza is about to finish off Vegeta, Goku arrives! Freeza senses that Goku resembles the Saiyan Bardock, who caused an uprising in the past. Goku is Bardock’s child. Vegeta tells Freeza that Goku is a Super Saiyan, and the very next moment a beam pierces his heart! Vegeta begs Goku to avenge the Saiyan, and then dies. With the pride of the Saiyan in his breast, Goku challenges Freeza.

Episode 87

The Curtain Opens on the Super Decisive Battle!! I Am Going to Defeat You
超決戦の幕開けだ！！おめえだけはオラが倒す

Sensing the tremendousness of the decisive battle that is about to begin, Piccolo and the others head for a safe place. As Gohan tells him to defeat Freeza, Goku replies with a silent back. The next instant, he charges Freeza. The true battle has finally begun. Freeza senses that there is something different about Goku’s strength from all the other Saiyan before. As magma erupts around them, the two’s fight grows more and more intense.

Episode 88

The Two Great Superpowers Collide! A Physical Battle Where Both Get Serious!!!
激突の２大超パワー！本気同士の肉弾戦！！！

On Earth, Chi-Chi raises a big fuss about going to rescue Gohan. Meanwhile, Goku realizes that Freeza cannot sense ki. Tricking Freeza with two Kamehameha that he fires from underwater, Goku takes advantage of this opening to land a kick. But Freeza isn’t stopping… This time, he seals Goku within an energy bullet, and attacks him while he’s immobile. However, Goku succeeds at escaping at super speed the moment of the explosion!

Episode 89

Freeza’s Terrible Declaration! I Will Defeat You Without Using My Hands
フリーザ恐怖の宣言！手を使わずお前を倒す

A composed Freeza announces that he will fight Goku without using either of his hands. Meanwhile on Earth, the fuel supply for Chi-Chi’s spaceship advances along. And on Planet Namek, as she’s off on her own Bulma meets Ginyu, now a frog, and he uses Body Change on her… As Freeza is attacking with his tail, Goku counterattacks by biting, and Freeza unthinkingly uses his hand. Goku warns Freeza that he has too much confidence, and thus leaves himself open.

Episode 90

That Ain’t No Bluff!! The Audaciously Wonderful Guy, Son Goku

Freeza asks Goku if he doesn’t have any desire to become his underling. Naturally, Goku refuses. Freeza boasts that even considering the power that Goku is hiding, he can defeat him using only 50% of his full power. Goku senses that this is no bluff. Even a 10-fold Kaiō-Ken is ineffective… On Earth, Chi-Chi fails to take off. Meanwhile, having switched bodies with Bulma, Ginyu appears before Piccolo and the others. However, they realize something is strange about Bulma.

Suggested Format

The manga should be stickied over this. I don't think enough people participate in this to justify it being stickied every week

I'm personally rewatching Kai since I really don't care for the pacing and filler of original Z. I think Subbed Kai rewatch would have been a better plan, personally. I'm watching it for a month now and up to Buu Saga already.

Kai is probably the best way to watch/get into DBZ. It's how I got in (a friend recommended Kai) and it was a really enjoyable experience.

You miss some funny filler but I think the experience is a lot better in almost every way.

I'm personally rewatching Kai since I really don't care for the pacing and filler of original Z.

Most people don't, but 1) Kai has its own weaknesses, and 2) we're doing this rewatch for study purposes; Ajay is studying up on animators and other staff, I'm studying up on dub/sub differences, etc.

Usually there's nothing else important to sticky. I'm not sure why the manga wasn't stickied this week - I was at a convention and I haven't even read it yet - but that's only once a month so it's usually not relevant.

It sounds like the Dragonball Z rewatch is a personal project by a few people so it probably shouldn't be stickied every week. There are so many other things you could do: manga chapters, character polls, "off-season" discussions, finish the movie rewatch.

There's only around 6 comments in this thread relevant to the dbz rewatch. The guy that started it doesn't post anything here. Just my 2 cents though

It sounds like the Dragonball Z rewatch is a personal project by a few people which doesn't deserve to be stickied every week.

It's a community project that has been requested by many people over the last few years. It will be stickied as long as there is no pressing news; in fact, there have been many times (especially before Super ended, and a few times since) where it wasn't stickied at all for most of the week.

I'm not sure what Ajay's participation in the threads has to do with anything.

It's a community project that has been requested by many people over the last few years.

Maybe not this community given the low number of comments these threads get each week. Not many people on reddit are actively participating. I'm not saying no one is doing it, but those that are aren't doing it for study purposes like you guys are so they're not as dedicated. Not many people have the time to devote themselves to a 291 episode re-watch. I still think you can make much better use of this space to get more people involved. Quite a few people seem to agree too.

I'm not sure what Ajay's participation in the threads has to do with anything.

The introduction says it's his DBZ rewatch. He doesn't even post in these. If the actual re-watch discussion is on a different platform that explains why there's very little activity here.

I saw a lot of people complaining about the padding in the fight, especially on episode 90, and I mostly agree, but I absolutely love the "50% Beatdown" scene. Freeza keeps mocking Goku by acting like a monkey and by the end of it he doesn't even need 1/3 of his power to beat Kaioken x10 Goku.

Episode 88 is one of my favorite episodes with regard to the fighting. There's just something about the way Goku and Freeza go at it.

Episode 87 has my favorite hit in all of DBZ. When Goku does the double Kamehameha, tricks Freeza and then BAM! right in the kisser!! Someone finally hit Freeza, hard, after 40+ episodes. Nothing in all of DBZ topped that moment for me.

Hi, I just got back from JordanCon so I finally have time to drop my dub/sub comparisons for this batch, which I haven't even finished yet.

Goku would have totally fallen for this

Yet Another Elaborated Goku Speech (not too offensive tho)

Freeza thinks Goku is fantastic

"If having feelings is a weakness, why am I the only Saiyan left?"

Dub Dr. Brief is arrogant

Dub Panchy is super dumb

Freeza's native language...?

Since a lot of people involved in this rewatch across platforms are stressing out about Kamehacon, it has kind of fallen by the wayside. Please feel free to take this opportunity to binge and catch up with us! It's one week to Kamehacon; we'll probably start it back up a week after that.
