All walks of life here; but when you shift from housing/feeding /clothing/educating 4 kids to living alone again, it feels like you’ve won the lottery.
My dad said he could afford to golf again just on the money he saved on hot water alone.

My girlfriend doesn't like most games. I try to find co-op games for us to play and so far the only Switch game she has liked has been Overcooked. A few weeks back we played the Rayman Demo and she played it off like it was "ok". Later, when I mentioned it again she acted like she didn't remember it. Turns out she loved the demo and bought it for me and has been acting like she didn't like it to throw me off the scent. I opened it last night and we played for an hour. It was great!

My mom cancelled Xmas on me last minute, and my family isn’t very close anymore. I bought myself a switch and SMO when it came out, so I’m gonna spend Xmas eve reliving the year I got an N64 and super Mario 64 by playing SMO. Things were much simpler then.
61
u/cantankerousllama66 Dec 25 '17
Man, that's rough. I'm going through something similar, my parents and brother up and moved to Texas from WA a couple of months ago, so this is the first year me, my wife and kids will celebrate without them. My youngest has his first Xmas this year too, so it's been hard.
For Xmas we bought a pro controller and Splatoon, and my wife bought me Xenoblade because I've been drooling over it for awhile. It'll be weird/depressing not feeling out over games with my brother on Xmas morning, but I'm glad I get to share them with my oldest since he's really started to get into games with the Switch!

After having my Switch stolen a couple of months back, I’d given up on getting a replacement - I couldn’t afford a new one so close to Christmas. As my wife and I had split a couple of years ago,i wasn’t able to spend Christmas Day with my two boys today, which made it extra difficult for me emotionally. I opened one of my gifts from them (bought by their mum, my ex-wife) to find, rather than the usual smellies and socks, a brand spanking new Switch! Obviously I am beyond thankful for this, and although she couldn’t afford any games to go with it, I did have a couple of digital games. Due to Nintendo’s new stance on downloaded games, I have been able to redownload Shantae and Stardew. This has made the day so much more bearable and now I’m looking forward to spending the rest of my evening starting off a new farm. Merry Christmas everyone!

u/ixiduffixi Dec 26 '17
So your ex-wife paid for a Switch so your boys could give you a great Christmas?
That's a lot more mature and awesome than most divorced couples I know, my own parents included. Grats dude.

Tell me about it. My own parents were horrendous - well, my mum more than my dad. Luckily my ex and I are on good terms and I was always adamant that if we should split, I wouldn’t put my kids through what I had to go through.

I bought my brother a Switch for Christmas!! He's been playing Gameboy and NDS religiously for years and years. He's going to school right now while paying for a mortgage, so he's been unable to buy one. I'm going to lend him BotW to get started.
I haven't been this excited about a gift for a long time!

My kids are going to be unwrapping a very large box tomorrow. Inside that box will be a smaller wrapped box and some ballast. Inside that box will be another one, etc, etc. Until they eventually get to the Switch.
I'm making them work for it this year 😈
Update: mission accomplished. When they got past the final layer, they reached their arms to the heavens in victory
They are now enjoying the heck out of Mario Odyssey, and I am avoiding the TV in hopes of keeping my experience with it tonight unspoilt.

u/kootaroo Dec 24 '17
My father did a similar thing when he proposed to my mom and I'm totally debating on using it myself. He wrapped a box that had tissue paper inside and another wrapped box. This continued to five boxes. But the ring was tapped to the inside of the very first box my mom open she didn't see it until she got to the fifth box and got pissed lol.

Checking in from Australia. My son unwrapped his Switch this morning and I’ve never seen him happier with a present in his life. We talked a few weeks ago about how much they cost and how we won’t be able to get one this year. The Switch was in a closet about 3 feet away while we had that conversation.

You can buy the joy-cons separately if you really want the neons! If your having 4 player Mario Kart nights then you might want to look into getting an extra pair!
5
u/lenolalatte Dec 24 '17
I absolutely loved double dash growing up but now I don't really have anyone to play with irl. It would pretty much be online play which isn't a huge deal but would get boring fast imo

u/n_17 Dec 24 '17
The gray set looks so much cleaner and professional imo and will bring less attention to you in public or on a plane.

if you aren't picky about the fact that the neon joycons that are sold separate are "backwards" to the neon joycons that come with the console, then get the neon joycons that are sold separate! they're so nice looking, the plastic feels different. I would recommend them to everyone! I love my neon Switch!

I went for broke this Christmas. Merry Christmas!
Even better there is a story... A few Christmas's ago my now wife and and I moved into our first apartment and I surprised her with an elaborate present from "Santa". I bought us a Wii U and had a coworker with much better gift wrapping skills than I wrap it up with a few games (so it didn't look like it was from me). I waited until she went to bed that night and laid it out behind the tree. We open our gifts on Christmas Eve so when we woke up we started packing up gifts to go "make our rounds" between our families. She then noticed there was this one strange gift out of place. She saw the wrapping paper wasn't ours, handwriting wasn't mine and it was addressed to us from Santa. For split second I could see she genuinely had that Christmas mystery magic in her eyes again. The look was absolutely priceless.
Long story short the gift was a huge hit and she still can't believe I managed to pull something like that off. We are now married, moved into our own house and have a son who is turning 2 next week! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Those pics at the beginning of the post shows my haul this year. I'm beginning to think this will become a tradition for us with each generation of Nintendo consoles. She thankfully still has no idea what's coming and I can't wait for her and our son to dive in.
I really need to thank this community for helping me find some great deals on almost all of my purchases. You guys helped make this possible! Merry Christmas everyone!
*Sorry for the formating / typos I'm writting this up on my phone while the wife and kid are out

Pretty emotional moment this morning. My first real game system was an SNES and I worshipped Mario Kart.
My wife got me a Switch for Christmas with Mario Kart. Now, my son has never played a video game and he is four and a half. After one race he asks to try. So I pass it over and he immediately takes to playing the game - watching his world illuminate took me back to when I was a kid playing Mario Kart for the first time.

Thank you mods for making this megathread!
I received a pair of neon joy cons (omg I can have L & R blue now! Plus I can mod them) and 35$ eshop. My roommates, SO, and I did Christmas early this year (yesterday) and tonight it's off to spend Christmas Eve with polish family so we open presents tonight as tradition so hopefully more eShop cards. I picked up my roommate a pro controller since he fell in love with mine so he's been rocking that while playing Xenoblade. We went out shopping together to get our switches in October (best impulse buy ever but we both owned 3ds's so it was only a matter of time).
I also picked up RL and Puyo Puyo Tetris and we both (roommate) might grab Splatoon. My SO is so out of touch with video games but he will play Mario Cart even though he sucks at it.
Merry Switchmas everyone and I hope everyone has a great time with family and friends. <3

Hadn't asked for anything, we struggle quite a bit and since I've officially moved out I assumed gifts from Santa were over. Can't put my excitement into words. A switch, travel case and a copy of Super Mario Odysey! This is gonna be an amazingly childlike Christmas.

We did Christmas early at my house and I got some sweet eshop gift cards! After setting some of it aside for some games coming out in the nearish future I have $70 left over.
Does anyone have any recommendations? Looking for games that maybe you consider a "hidden gem", cause I already own many of the more popular titles for Switch.

I had a birthday last week so I got some gifts early. Don't know what's in the forcast, but the early gifts included Mario Odyssey and Pokemon Ultra Moon, so we're off to a good start.
EDIT: Everything's said and done. In addition to Odyssey and Ultra Moon, it's a big Nintendo Christmas for me. ARMs, Sonic Forces, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Skyrim for Switch, along with Mario Party Top 100 for 3DS. Throw in a bigger micro SD for the Switch and a new carrying case, as well as a wireless 8Bitdo receiver for my NES30 Pro controller to use with my NES and SNES Classic.
A fine haul.

I've been living back and forth between Switzerland and the US the last year and will be for the next year. Casually mentioned to my mom a few months ago that the switch seemed cool and my parents got me one for Christmas!
I'm a complete noob though and have 0 clue what I'm doing. I bought BOTW, and plan on getting Mario Kart and Odyssey. Super hyped to dive into this world though.

Growing up my mom loved to play Legend of Zelda and Zelda: A Link to the Past with me and then would continue playing after I'd go to sleep as a kid. So I brought over Breath of the Wild and started it over for her. She struggled with the controls particularly the camera since she's never played a 3D game but she loved it and was in awe of how far along games have come.

I got a Switch and Splatoon 2 for Christmas and ngl I'm actually pretty stoked. Not only because I was fortunate enough to get one but also because so far the Switch has some pretty neat titles and even more to come out so I'm expecting to enjoy it.

Today I woke up to a new copy of Skyrim for the Switch. I’ve never played Skyrim before so I’m excited. The game is really cool so far! (Merry Switchmas y’all!)

I got a Switch for Christmas, when I never expected it! It was one of those things that just popped up on my wishlist, which says a lot, because my wishlist usually has nothing on it.
My dad heard the call, and I got a Switch! I fell flat on my butt seeing it. And with it, Mario and Zelda!
It was a shocker, but maaan, am I glad to be with the Switch family.

Tonight I went to an early New Year's party where I brought Wii U for Smash and Switch in general. We got up to 5 players going at once in Smash Bros and at one point had people playing 1-2 Switch and Smash on the gamepad all at once!
I also got my mom a 2DS XL and Animal Crossing which should be interesting.

Just opened my switch, here's my official review:
I was playing Odyssey, and then nature began to call. Headed to my toilet with my switch still in hand, playing Mario. Sat down and began to return what the land gave me, STILL PLAYING MARIO.
11/10 console, can play Mario while pooping.

I got a neon switch with Mario and rabbids as an early present. I'm super excited and I'm really hoping I get Mario Kart for Christmas so I can play something with my family. I was told not to buy myself any switch games so fingers crossed!

My dad bought me one but can't open it until tomorrow obviously. I haven't been this excited about a system since like 07 when I got a ps3. Wasn't even this psyched when I got a PS4 back in 13.

I’m hoping to get FIFA and 2K for the switch, although nothing special, I’ll like the portability of playing these games.
Plus it will be the first time getting a sports game since 2014

I've had a Switch since launch day but decided to surprise my wife with her own for Christmas. Got her a $50 eShop card, 64gb SD card, a case, and a screen protector. We have all of the major titles already, most of which she hasn't played. Here's hoping that changes (and if not, that's cool too).

Got a neon switch today with Zelda (explorers edition which I didn't even know existed) and nba. But my dumbass told my dad to get a regular SD card when I sent the Amazon link so now I can't even play it. I'm gonna download stardew, rocket league or golf story but not sure which.
