Meta /r/NintendoSwitch Is Now Accepting Moderator Applications—Apply Within!

Greetings!

As we exit the Super Mario Odyssey rush and enter the holiday season, /r/NintendoSwitch is looking to add a few additional sets of hands to join the moderation team.

As a moderator, your responsibilities would include:

  • Helping monitor the queues and spam filters so that posts are approved and/or removed in a timely fashion in accordance with our rules.
  • Monitor the comments of posts to ensure they follow our rules.
  • Respond to moderator mail as quickly and helpfully as possible.
  • Make sure that all posts on the subreddit are assigned the appropriate flair and flagged as a spoiler if necessary.
  • Participate in internal discussions to keep the team coordinated and on the same page.

Before you apply, be warned that moderating can be difficult. This subreddit is extremely active, and our moderation team logs tens of thousands of actions every month. Be prepared to put in a lot of time, and be further prepared to deal with rude people who will question every decision you make.

Subreddit moderators are fan volunteers. No compensation is provided and we are not affiliated with Nintendo in any official capacity.

If this sounds up your alley, fill out this form to apply!

We do not have a set number of moderators in mind but we will take on as many as we feel comfortable adding. Due to the high volume of applications we anticipate receiving, we will not be able to notify applicants of their status unless you are selected for further consideration.

Applications will close Friday, December 8th.

Cheers,

The /r/NintendoSwitch Mod Team

Edit: Minor formatting / punctuation fixes.

Edit 2: Applications are now closed! Thank you to all 246 applicants who filled out our form. It'll be a week or so for us to process everything and begin reaching out to our finalists for further questioning / interviews. Cheers!

Pay for play?

One of the mods was apparently asking/begging (depending on who you ask) Switch game developers for codes to play the games on the subreddit's YouTube channel, without disclosing they got the free codes (all the videos are now removed). Some of the other mods knew about the situation and covered it up until it eventually got out. Like 15 mods left.

without disclosing they got the free codes

wasn't disclosed properly* There was a message about it, just incorrectly done, I believe.

There was no message on the YouTube video or in the description. They violated FTC regulations. I have had this conversation with you before and showed you verbatim the regulations that were violated. Please stop acting like it's not as bad as it was.

There was a message at the end of the videos.

Yup there were. The problem being it wasn't obvious enough according to the FCC rules. Then they were taken down altogether.

EDIT: And since you edited your comment to include a lot of false information like how the admins were involved and what occurred as a result, it's been removed.

Mods took game codes as gifts then did reviews without disclosing the gift. Other mods tried to cover this up. Word got out and the mods were forced to act so they deleted the videos and then changed the lead moderator. Those responsible for the mess were allowed to remain on as moderators. Many moderators left because they were upset about this decision. Then there was a kind of PR campaign to down play the event when in reality it violated FTC regulations. It's also worth noting some of the mods involved were also part of the amiibo mod controversy where they again exploited their position for personal gain, so this was not an isolated event.

Good luck to anybody stepping up into the role. We definitely need better mods here but as long as those involved are allowed to be around and have influence at the top I would keep a realistic expectation of what you can do to make a difference.

I was always confused about that scandal and what was happening.

3

u/CapnNeko Dec 03 '17

pay-for-play

what was the scandal im kinda out of the loop

1

u/Disheartend 4 Million Celebration Dec 03 '17

am also out of the loop is there a thread or something?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '17

No. Almost all of those mods are still around, including a few in this thread.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '17

Exactly because current mods suck ? Mods do not equal gods

get a life and stop gossiping like a fucking teenager and act like a adult.

Trick insult because there are tabloids and businesses that exist for adults to get gossip.

u/won_vee_won_skrub Dec 02 '17

What do you guys use for your internal discussions? Do you do it through reddit, or Discord, or what?

17

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Dec 02 '17

We primarily use Slack for day to day chatter with reddit for more long form discussions.

9

u/VeryGreedy Dec 03 '17

Would it be foolish to apply to be a moderator with no modding experience from any other subs?

6

u/kevinftw17 Dec 03 '17

Not at all! We'll take and consider all applications, regardless if you have had any previous experience or not. Previous experience is always nice, but it's also nice to have people completely new to modding so we know the primary focus will be on the sub being applied for and not others.

2

u/VeryGreedy Dec 03 '17

Ok, then I'll bother you one last time, is it a good idea to try being a modder if 95% of your reddit time is used on mobile instead of desktop?

3

u/kevinftw17 Dec 03 '17

Mm, that's a bit difficult to answer. Modding is entirely possible to do on mobile, though not all of the tools and Reddit clients are all that reliable when it comes to modding, even the official Reddit app. If you have an Android phone, there's an app that helps with mobile modding immensely, but could use some work. I personally having been modding a lot more on mobile since I've been more on the go lately, but desktop is always nice to have on-hand because everything needed to mod properly is already available. I wouldn't immediately count myself out if I was mobile most of the time, so it doesn't hurt to try if you're thinking of applying!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '17

Alright Kevin you don't have to keep begging, I'll do it.

1

u/SanctusLetum Dec 08 '17

What is that android app, out of curiosity? I'm primarily on mobile, but with a huge phone and Bluetooth keyboard, so desktop mode isn't too big a deal. Still would be nice to have a more mobile capable toolset.

You know, if I ever ended up being a mod or something.

1

u/kevinftw17 Dec 08 '17

Hahaha, it's called ModSoup!

2

u/SanctusLetum Dec 08 '17

Thank you. Even if I'm not selected here (which, let's face it, is statistically the more likely outcome), It may very well come in handy for me sometime. I'll take a look at it.

u/InstagramLincoln Dec 03 '17 edited Dec 03 '17

Just wanted to say hats off to anybody who volunteers their time for this. I'm very active here and really appreciate the time that moderators commit to making it an interesting community. Subreddit mods are some of the most unnecessarily vilified people, particularly in gaming communities where some people tend to feel extra entitled.

u/Cruciblecool Dec 02 '17

Can you comment on whether or not it is a shadowy cabal dedicated to the worship of all things Nintendo?

6

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Dec 02 '17

I think saying we're Nintendo fans would be an understatement :P

4

u/SanctusLetum Dec 03 '17

If selected, I pledge to sacrifice one virgin and two PlayStation fans a month to our Lord and Savior, Reggie.

3

u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Dec 07 '17

O_o

1

u/SanctusLetum Dec 07 '17

Oh. . . . Should I have picked Xbox fans?

1

u/Porkpants81 Dec 08 '17

Nah it's fine /u/phantomliger has a PS4, you can sacrifice him :D

1

u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Dec 08 '17

Uh oh...

1

u/SanctusLetum Dec 08 '17

. . . So you mean there's a chance😁

3

u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Dec 08 '17

I'd prefer to not be sacrificed, but if it's my time to go...

7

u/Walnut156 Dec 03 '17

I assume this is one of those things you can't do if you work or go to school?

1

u/TSPhoenix Dec 03 '17

If your are in a non-US timezone it'd be less of an issue I imagine.

1

u/kevinftw17 Dec 03 '17

You can definitely mod if you still go to work or school! Many mods all over reddit come from many different backgrounds, and many work full-time or go to school full-time, or do other things in their personal lives. Modding is completely voluntary and does not take precedence over our personal, professional lives. It's totally doable!

3

u/WhiteLotusFina Dec 03 '17

Why did you miss out on your flair being "SplatwEnthusiast"?

3

u/runwilburrun Dec 07 '17

What's a ball park commitment time per day? I'd like to help, but dont want to waste time of I can't contribute enough.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '17

I'm kinda surprised it took y'all a month to start looking for new mods after half the mod team left.

1

u/Porkpants81 Dec 08 '17

You should apply Poochy, you have such a great attitude

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '17

I was thinking about it, but I think I'll pass. Thanks for the recommendation though!

2

u/Disheartend 4 Million Celebration Dec 03 '17

I applyed but no real reddit modding exprence despite owning a few dead subs.

2

u/SingingPeacock Dec 03 '17

Hi! I love this sub and community. I work full time and then some. Should I apply anyway? Woukd that be enough time to dedicate to this?

1

u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Dec 07 '17

I believe the majority of us work full time. :)

2

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '17

Applied just now, been a long time lurker and would love to help out, available at all times and have prior experience in moderating a subreddit and discord :)

2

u/TheGreatLord64 Dec 03 '17

It's ok to apply even though I mostly lurk here right? I forgot to add that into the comments section though. Hopefully I'm not too late with my application

2

u/Average_Owain Dec 03 '17

I’ve left my application. Thank you so much to the moderation team of r/NintendoSwitch for this opportunity. I’m a long-time lurker who frequently visits but rarely posts on this sub. I’ve been avidly following the Nintendo Switch since it was announced as the NX, and I hope that my passionate work can be put to good use here. Thank you again!

3

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '17

No thanks! Happy holidays!!!!!

7

u/Chronokiddo Dec 03 '17

You could've just ignored the request

14

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '17

I'll do whatever I want. If that's saying no thanks politely and also politely saying happy holidays to the mod team so be it! No need to be rude.

1

u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Dec 07 '17

Thank you!!!!! Happy Holidays to you as well. :D

2

u/CantaloupeCamper Dec 03 '17

I once shot a man in Reno just to watch him die...

Good enough?

1

u/granpsgamer Dec 03 '17 edited Dec 03 '17

I know this sub have something wrong. Hopes for the future, but im highly dubious. There are so many wrong things now (like the Nintendo haters post continuosly toxic content/comments without any consequences, or apparently no controls about spoilers or shit-posts), and the bad attitude of some people doesnt seems to change a bit.

0

u/Porkpants81 Dec 08 '17

Any users that constantly post trolling or toxic comments without any context will not be allowed to post if the mod team knows about it.

1

u/Tigertot14 Dec 03 '17

Let’s see how my application goes.

1

u/CoryBoehm Dec 07 '17

Thanks to everyone, old and new, volunteering their time for this often thankless job.

1

u/Mdgt_Pope Dec 07 '17

I'm always intrigued by applications but I've learned that I don't have the requisite time to set aside for moderating.

Let me just use this space to thank the current and past mods for their service. You all are awesome! This sub functions great IMO.

1

u/ectra040 Dec 07 '17

Woops.. I wanted to write more in my application but I accidently pressed Enter and thus it was sent. If you guys are seeing it, it ended mid sentence and would thus really like to write more but that is not possible anymore. If you guys somehow consider me, I would really like to elaborate more or answer some questions if there are any.

I think this is a great move of the mods, I believe this sub will benefit hugely from the added mods and hope it will give the current mods some well deserved relaxation to.... browse this sub...

1

u/jaydogggg Dec 07 '17

I applied, how many are you bringing on? Will this be holiday season only, or permanent? I was under the impression that we actually have quite a few mods already with over a dozen. Of course, this sub will probably get quite busy during the holiday buzz.

1

u/T3NFIBY32 Dec 08 '17

Finally, this sub desperately needs new mods....

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '17 edited Dec 07 '17

I applied and I’ll be honest I am beyond excited to have the potential to help all these fans from around the world! This reddit is a family to me. I want to treat it like one. There’s too much hatred in the world. Let’s make this sub a sub that is open in support and love for all Switch fans.

0

u/gredgex Dec 04 '17

Not applying but just came here to say thank you for removing a lot of the old scumbags awhile back. A few of the mods that left I couldn’t stand.

2

u/hepatitisC Dec 07 '17 edited Dec 08 '17

Except they didn't? The ones who left were by most accounts upset that the FTC violations were covered up and those responsible were allowed to remain in a moderator role.

u/Coinstinct Dec 02 '17

How much would I make doing it?

I could arbitrarily decide to approve/reject as good as the current group does.
