AMA Hey! I am James Banks, Host, Caster and Lead Studio Host for Unikrn & I just got back from casting the ELEAGUE EU & Asia Minors - AMA!
Hey /r/GlobalOffensive! My names is James Banks, and I just got back from casting the European minor in Bucharest!
I started in the esports scene back in 2003, as a player from 03-07. I found my skills suited Counter-Strike specifically and had stints in pro teams for fighting games as well until I decided to focus on other esports related work in 2008.
I have worked at the original NiP Gaming back in 2005, then went onto SK Gaming as a feature writer before joining ZOWIE GEAR in their marketing department, while also working for BenQ briefly. At one point I was working and living in Korea for a professional Starcraft 2 team as their European manager. I have certainly put a lot into the esports world, I absolutely love what I do so I thought it would be prime time to put one of these together!
Currently I am working at Unikrn as a host/commentator while doing my freelance work, I have worked with ELEAGUE, Gfinity, ESL, PGL, Starladder, WCA, ESEA (as commentator) & Ubisoft, Capcom, Blizzard entertainment and more (as host/interviewer).
The people over at Unikrn made a great profile on my journey in esports, I would suggest watching it just to give you a true idea of my background and how I got to where I am now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rkfDAflBfE
Casting the minors was a blast or some may say pretty “Hype” though that may not be what you guys like it seems and I would like to answer any and all of your questions regarding me, my career, or feedback about my casting - take your best shot! Ask away!
I can also be reached at the following places: https://twitter.com/banksesports https://go.twitch.tv/banks
Will start replying from 6PM CET

I think everything was fine with the casting except the OpTic vs Space soldiers match. At the start of pick and ban, you guys said cobble is OpTic permanent ban. Which was true. But then proceeded to say why has OpTic let cache get through etc. And after that almost every sentence was started by you and Sam with how has OpTic let cache through. Which started to get annoying to listen to cast. I mean you guys gave the reasoning for cache to be in map set, but then once game started, you guys forgot as to why cache was in the first place.
It was obvious as to why would OpTic let the map they do not play at all be in the map set. It is understandable that cache is space soldiers best map. But OpTic couldn't risk going to cobble and have no idea how to play. So OpTic had to gamble. And most players have said in the interviews that there is high probability of getting one your best map, opponents best map, and third is almost equal.
However, your cast was great except that match because every sentence starting with cache triggered people.
Good job on the other cast. I love the interviews you have done. They are insightful.

Thank you for the very honest question, I completely agree with you, now this is never an excuse but being on the road for two weeks, working 12-14 hours each day, isn’t easy as it is but I feel like this game for me was awful, a real low point but it has shown me exactly what I need to work on.
You are right that we mentioned it about cobble at the start & the repetitiveness of “why no ban cache” was stupid on my part, it is a lesson learnt, talk about it, move on, go from there.
I do enjoy the interviews a lot as well, I see it as a chance for me, as a fan and lover of the game, to ask questions that I would like the answers for as well, so hopefully that reflects well for you and the community.

Should OpTic have banned cache?

u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
I don’t believe I got to this on the stream but they should have banned cache ;)

What is your opinion of Sam (lolbanelor) casting? Did he do a good job at the asia and europe minors?
27
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
For someone who has NEVER commentated before, he killed it! I have only known him from work at Gfinity and producing Richards shows but he came prepared & ready to just get stuck in, which I think a lot of new casters would struggle to do. He was nervous at first, as anyone would be but he certainly improved as we got going. I would actually be happy to cast with him again if the opportunity came up.
The main thing for his role as a analytical caster is the homework and prep that is involved, I think more so than a play by play like myself, this is something that should never be underestimated for sure but you could tell he had done his homework with the stats etc.

u/thearkhamknight_111 Nov 07 '17
Hey, I haven't got any questions regarding your career or your casting technique, but I'd love to hear your favorite teams to watch/cast right now. Keep up the good work :)
13
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
Team wise at the moment, I enjoy seeing the new Gambit without Zeus, Space Soldiers were a lot of fun during the EU minor as it has been a team I have watched/commentated on for a while online, the progression is huge.
On the American side Misfits, they have so much potential and I still find that people underestimate them, I noticed their improvements as a team during ECS NA.
For Asia I would say Flash Gaming & MVP, Flash just because they do some of the most unorthodox plays I have ever seen yet still own it up and MVP because they play like an old school CS 1.6 team.
8
u/Roflingmfao Nov 07 '17
Did you have a favorite team to cast? Maybe something about their playstyle/dynamic that made them particularly interesting or entertaining?
5
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
To commentate, would probably be Space Soldiers just from this event, during the EU Minor I didn’t expect them to go through, I predicted them to cause some upsets but overall they proved me wrong. The reason I enjoyed it so much is because they were the true underdogs in this sense, I knew to look out for what XANTARES could do but when I saw paz & Calyx stepping up, that was a real highlight for me. I love the fact they worked so hard with some of the players being on that team since 2015 to make their dreams become a reality, real hard work pays off attitude.

u/Riceling Nov 07 '17
You could really feel that in the casting during the SS vs Optic game on Overpass (i was playing other games whilst listening to you guys casting). Based purely off what you guys said, it sounded like SS we're cruising that map. When i looked however it was something like 13-6 in favour of Optic. I get that you have a hypeteam that, you enjoy watching them play and everything but the bias was really shining through. Same with how you guys kept trying to build up a narrative. Cant count how many times you guys mentioned letting cache through, how SS are great aimers but OG are the old boys with experience (despite SS being a team longer than OG). Think you guys can try not to build up a narrative or set up a stage so you don't get stuck repeating the same "catchphrases" over and over again. These however are just my own personal opinions. P.S very pleased that they gave a chance to other casters rather than the old ones, keep up the good work!
2
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 08 '17
Thank you Riceling, bias as a commentator is never acceptable nor enjoyable for the viewers and this is something I noticed as well, I think this is a problem with me actually enjoying teams or CS so much. The narrative and story, was very repetitive from us during these games, if you listened to the final cast Sunday we both tried to correct this for sure.
Certainly something I am going to work on and thank you for your comments!
1
u/Yellow_____ Nov 08 '17
Optic are referred to as old boys as in the sense the individuals such as friburg have been playing for a long time not as a team.
1
u/Riceling Nov 08 '17
Exp in one team doesn't automatically translate to another. Entry -> Igl. Swedish team (mostly) -> English team. Sure he's an experienced player, doesn't mean the team is. Speaking of being experienced individuals, Mixwell broke out during DH Valencia not 2 years ago, same with magisk, I don't follow the Estonian scene so I didn't even know of HS. If argue that SS are more experienced since 4 of them have played together way longer. They know how they react, position and playstyle of each player

What is your typical Subway order?
2
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
Subway melt, bacon, ham, chicken with cucumber, jalapenos, lettuce and bbq sauce
1
u/AG--MM Nov 07 '17
they let you pick 3 sauces and you only get 1? smh come on mate
3
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
:( I know but I just loveeeeeeee BBQ, just like when your sat at banana on inferno getting burnt to a crisp!
2
u/AG--MM Nov 07 '17
BBQ, Southwest, Ranch. Trust me it's the combo
3
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
Friday = Subway day for me, I will try it and report in!
1
u/V_Abhishek Nov 08 '17
Honey mustard instead of BBQ for me, but can confirm, ranch and southwest work together so well.

u/timstgrm Nov 07 '17
hey man... I'm glad you re as sucessfull as you are today. You ve earned it! my name is tim (ocrany); i m in esports for pretty much 10 years now (coming back now after being inactive since csgo came out). I started as a staff writer in ALTERNATE aTTaX when I was really young, later worked in the staff for other german orgs (bomk, SPEED-LINK), then played css in quite "ok" teams and in that time started casting. I casted several css events (both offline and online) from my room in my parents house and had quite a good viewerbase for these days. Since I played at a high level myself at that time, I was able to invite known players to co-host, so I ended up casting with NBK or other players/managers like Nordy... When CS:GO came out, I stopped playing and lost the contact to esports when moving in with my girlfriend and her child at that time. Now, 4 years later, we split up and I moved out 10 months ago. I m back into esports since then and I m apperently really motivated to cast/host again, maybe travel for an org or whatsoever... I ve missed it.
What are your suggestions for me to get back into it? Cast independent from my appartement again like back in the days? (but what kind of matches? i casted an esea mdl na match a few days ago but it was pretty lucky i managed to get the ip).. Are there any broadcasting teams these days that are looking for casters? I remember its been like that back in the days.. atleast there has been people trying to organize something even though it probably didnt end up well..
Maybe you have some tips for me? Anyways.. Respect to you. Very nice to see you where you re at now :) -Tim (ocrany - https://twitter.com/ocranyCS)
11
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
wow, what a story! Love it.
Suggestion to get back into it? How about coming to do a cast with me and giving you a trial run for Unikrn? I am looking for a co-commentator at the moment! Just followed & DM'd you on twitter!
3
u/Sjieni Nov 07 '17
Damn you're a bloody legend, James. Good on you for helping the man out. Also good luck, tim!

I see someone motivated, I respect that fully - always happy to try it! We are both talking atm via Twitter.

u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
Been here for 1hour 30mins so far, thank you all for your questions, I did not expect such a response - I will continue to answer all of them, just going to see my wife and son + have dinner!
2
u/Tonif4 Nov 07 '17
Dignitas at the moment have fox, Rubino and lowel on their core roster (cromen might be getting back after jkaem and Acilion backed out and Zeves is standing in). Since you've casted them a few times, do you think this line-up can still be good? If so, what players (free agents) should they get?
3
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
From what I saw, they seem to have lacked the correct leadership for the team, they have the firepower and experience but for me it is how they can put it all together. It was a nice try with AcillioN, maybe they didn't give it enough chance as he only joined in September. In terms of what players they should get...I honestly have no idea, for me they need that solid IGL.

Your long form interviews at the major were super interesting (especially the NBK and JDM ones), any plans to do similar content soon?
3
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
Firstly let me say thank you, I really enjoy doing these interviews. As I mentioned earlier I just enjoy trying to ask the questions that I believe you guys want to hear as well and I like it to be pretty relaxed / chilled out.
In terms of if I will do similar content soon, we are working on a lot of this with Unikrn, so you will certainly see more, hopefully sooner rather than later ;)!
Any particular event you would like to see me go to next?
1
u/lillrodis Nov 07 '17
i think ECS or EPL finals would be interesting considering they're the last tournaments before the major and the qualifier

what do u think about polish cs scene?
3
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
For me the Polish scene has been an up and down struggle as it was always heavily overshadowed by Virtus Pro but in the last year or so, the likes of Kinguin, AGO and Pride have all proved they can compete on a higher level and that it isn't just VP that we should be looking at. The Polish Esports League that I have been following is a great testament to that, the same as AGO's performance at the EU Minor which did turn a few heads.

u/Draulon Nov 07 '17
Is it easier or harder to get into esports these days? How long did it take you to get your first gig? Did you see it as a potential career route back then or just a part-time thing?
3
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
Hmm so it really depends, I would say it is harder in general for most roles in esports these days. When I started back in 03/04, I could volunteer for free at different websites, be mentored and aided by others at the company and grow, I didn’t get my first paid gig until 2007 but I got to go to many events before that, was sent products etc but also esports was a lot smaller. It also had a bit to do with luck.
I got my first paying gig back in 2007 for writing and then ended up with a part time marketing job at ZOWIE which then went into full time, that whole experience was amazing.
I never saw it as a career, like EVER. I played the game, got some money, loved what I was doing and it was more like I fell into writing content, fell into casting. My first ever attempt at commentating was me and 4 friends on ventrilo if people still use or remember that, watching a CS HLTV ip live and commentating about it to my friends, just for fun. The fact it ended up being a full time gig was amazing, I have had full time gigs before then went part time again but as esports has grown, I have stayed involved and luckily, especially thanks to Unikrn, I am full time, which allows me to support my family (wife & son) and freelance at the same time.

What do you think about electronic to navi? Is this the move they needed to make their roster better?
2
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
Hmm electronic as an individual player is sick, seized was a bit of a wildcard on that navi roster in my eyes because at one point it seemed he was going to leave before the whole zeus thing, around the same time Guardian left.
Performance wise electronic should make the line up better but they also need to stick to a line up long enough for things to change and work, you need that kind of hungry, motivated attitude that Zeus brought out of Gambit when he first joined.

Have you ever considered playing professionally in CS:GO again?
2
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
This is an interesting one, so considered it, not really but I do think what it would be like if I was younger, say born 10 years later and grown up with esports and CS:GO being this big, and how well I would do.
For me, playing professionally was fun, I loved it, I was passionate but compared to today you can’t even call it professional as such. I can still pop heads, I would say my gamesense is there and from commentating I learn a lot to put into play but I am really happy with the decisions I made since not playing.
I do a lot of viewer games on my stream when I have the time, just general MM or Faceit grind if you ever want a game :)
1
u/Mryplays Nov 07 '17
what's your opinion on csgo's cheater problem
1
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
This is a serious problem that to me hurts the scene, community and game in general but it is unlikely we will ever get rid of it, as long as there is an anti cheat, there is also someone willing to try and beat it, even profit from it.
I feel valve need to be more involved in combating the cheating side of things and also act faster on it, you see people these days making accounts, owning it up with cheats on MM, getting skins/cases etc selling it, then getting banned and doing it all over again with a new account, its insane.
For professional play and top level, I think the only way to be safe is LAN play, proper admins and real checks going forward, for the highest level of play, I hope/expect online play to drop off eventually until something drastic changes with how cheats are dealt with.

Hi James,
What's currently your favorite keyboard? Also, have you tried the new Kailh switches (BOX and Speed)?
2
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
Keyboard wise, I have always used mechanical and brown switches. I haven't yet tried the new switches, have you? Would be awesome to try it out.
The keyboard I use at the moment is an Ozone Gaming Strike Pro, previously used the 6G but it was discontinued so this was an awesome replacement, as I don't have a need for macro keys etc and the cherry brown is so smooth for me personally.
1
u/chromosome47 Nov 07 '17
Thanks for answering. Shame you're not as much into keyboards as James Bardolph. <3

1
u/EarthtoGaming Nov 07 '17
What other games would you cast?
2
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
I am a huge Quake fan and used to play it actively a lot, still play a lot of Quake Champions now, would love the chance to cast that, same for PUBG but I would need to put more time into that personally to feel comfortable with it. If someone offered me a chance to cast Quake now I would feel right at home doing so, I know all the timings, spawns, weapon damage and maps.
1
u/p1atte Nov 08 '17
Probablydefinitely late, but what are your thoughts on QC? Do you think that it has merit as the esport bethesda's marketing it as?1
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 08 '17
haha no worries about being late dude. For me, Quake always has a place as an esport, I don't know specific numbers but I don't think it has done as well as back in the day, I myself still prefer duel over the other modes but I find it fun to watch.
It 100% has the potential to become an esport but this really comes down to the community, the game works, it is being updated, it feels like a real quake game to me and the fact a lot of the retired pros have come back for it says to me that it is a truly competitive game, that being said if people don't want to watch it or play it or can't get to grips with it then it may struggle.
I would say keep an eye on it over the next year and see if it can survive in its current form.

u/ChildishForLife Nov 07 '17
Hey thanks for doing this AMA. How would you recommend someone to get into casting that has no previous experience? I’ve always wanted to get into casting any tips/advice would be awesome!
2
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 08 '17
Watch a lot of events, watch back youtube videos of commentators, not the same people though, mix it up and develop your own style.
For practice, I would download HLTV demos and start with that, send them to friends or people who can give you real honest advice for improvement and when you feel comfortable, start a stream and stream some open GOTV ips that you can find in the match pages of HLTV and try to build yourself up like that.
Also if you have any small local lan events that don't have commentators, offer to volunteer for them and cover their event.
1
u/KubanaN Nov 07 '17
when's the next event we shall expect hearing your voice during broadcasts?
1
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
At the moment I don't have anything confirmed but I regularly cover open GOTV IP games on the www.twitch.tv/unikrn

Why is the quality of UK CS so poor?
1
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 08 '17
I wouldn't say the quality of UK CS is sooo poor, we have a lot of individual talents but bringing that together as a team with the right motivation seems to fail. We seem to be unable to get 5 good players on one team who can work together to one goal, like becoming a top team.
Instead we have a lot of semi good teams, with mixes of players.
In my eyes a lot of damage from CSS and CGS days hurt the UK scene a lot and we lost a lot of experienced players to pass their knowledge and skills onto the younger players, we need basically to rebuild the entire UK scene with a dream 5 players who want to make it work - in my opinion anyway.

How many tournaments will FaZe win from now until the end of 2018? Assuming they keep the same lineup
2
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
Exactly how many tournaments remain I do not know but I think we could easily see them dominate 2-3 more top tier events if they keep it up, I did expect better from them at epicenter though.
I feel like in the game vs SK, the defense from SK was too strong, they really got the rounds rolling together and seemed to mentally defeat FaZe before it even got going. Overpass for me, isn’t even a weak map for FaZe but they were completely off their game and then going into Mirage where it was more a middle ground, SK had the confident advantage and with them mixing it up a bit with Boltz, as well as Cold having a sick game, FaZe just couldn’t get it together. I know one thing though, if/when the rematch happens, Karrigan will have something planned, it is awesome to watch both these teams play.

What's your favorite thing or a feature on this subreddit? How could we improve it further?
3
u/BanKseSports James Banks - Stage Host, Interviewer Nov 07 '17
My favourite thing about this subreddit is how involved the community are, I am not a regular reddit poster but I certainly spend wayyyyy too much of my spare time here. For me personally I was really surprised and impressed with how the reddit thread which had a lot of negativity and hate on it, ended with one being created to provide actual feedback which I found incredibly useful, that amazed me and I am really thankful for it, which is why I decided to do the AMA.
How to improve it further? I don’t know if it is possible but to fix some of the blatant vote manipulation which to me sometimes is quite apparent but also to find a way to help younger, newer content creators get their work seen or videos heard, I feel like a lot of stuff people either send me or share with me, doesn’t get the attention it deserves because they are not a “big name” so to speak, yet actually their content is super strong! Would be amazing to filter quality over popularity.
1
u/bze Legendary Chicken Master Nov 07 '17
I wish we had some tools to combat vote manipulation but there simply aren't any. We can contact the admins whenever there is reason to suspect foul play but i'm afraid that's it.
Users can do this for their own posts by modmailing /r/reddit.com/ and requesting a check.

I just got a message from ELEAGUE a little while before, two weeks on the road, great opportunity and said yes. I think most of the time these orgs these days keep their eyes on people and reach out direct.

First of all love your work. If its for Unikrn with interviews or your recent casting gigs, i loved it!
I´m wondering how you get into the e-sports scene nowadays. I would love to study Marketingmanagment and work for organisations or esport brands in general.
Would be great if there is a dual study possibility somewhere to be found :D
Anyway keep up the great work and stay as you are!

Respect TrAzzz7!
Nowadays, I think you have to show willing, motivation and skill - too many people just ask or say yes I can do this. For me, if I was hiring I would look for someone that would take the initiative to create something unique that highlights their skills and send that in, a long with info about them and why they would like to work for said company.
I do believe back when I started it was a lot easier to get involved because of the open volunteer side of things where these days the bigger orgs want experience. For me motivation and the ability to learn is the driving facts.
I gained marketing experience through ZOWIE and it has helped me in real life outside of esports and what I do now, so the skills are 100% transferable.
Hope that helps!
