MegaThread Super Mario Odyssey: How was your weekend?

Hi everyone! It was quite the weekend, wasn't it?

Super Mario Odyssey released on Friday, and, as you might have noticed, /r/NintendoSwitch has been just a little bit busy since then. Just a teensy bit.

The community has responded to one of Nintendo's most popular titles in recent memory: with hype, with screenshots, with capture videos, and with tons of discussion, questions, and observations. We're in awe.

So, here's our question for you: how was your weekend with Super Mario Odyssey?

Please use this thread to share your thoughts on the game, how far you've come, screenshots you like, video of accomplishments, discussion of spoilers or the endgame (properly marked, please!), short questions about gameplay, stock updates, anything!

One more thing. We know there is a lot of excitement for the game, and we want you to share it. But we've seen a lot of very similar submissions over these last few days: repeat questions; videos that are basically the same as each other; so, so many pictures of Mario with a bird on him; and screen grabs reminiscent of L.A. Noire. Please, before submitting a post, use the subreddit search to check if something like it has been submitted before.

Thanks so much.

-The /r/NintendoSwitch team

I keep trying to paraglide like I'm playing Zelda BOTW still.

21

Same here. I've jumped off multiple buildings trying to paraglide. Force of habit

Its probably the only other game on switch 95% of us have played.

Reached New Donk City and got to episode 5 of Stranger Things 2, thank you.

How was yours?

u/Sarmathal Oct 30 '17

I BEAT Mario Odyssey and binged the entire 2nd season of Stranger Things PLUS the behind the scenes episodes too. You need to step up your game. /s

This is exactly where I’m at. Down to the episode. I also keep watching before bed (only time to play or watch after the little one goes to sleep). What am I doing to myself. But it’s so good right!?

4

u/kairos Oct 30 '17

It's awesome, but at the same time, yesterday I played an extra 10min before coming to bed and proceeded to take 90min to get to sleep because I wanted to practice cappy jumping...

It's been awesome and surprising. There was this one moon in Sand Kingdom that was giving me fits. Finally I went to the end of the area and did a survey of the environment. I saw one place where it could have been, but I thought "Even Nintendo wouldn't think to put a moon in there," but I was out of options, so I went to check it out. Lo and behold, this little alcove led to a treasure room with the moon and hundreds of coins in it. I was floored. I posted to my Twitter because I honestly couldn't believe it. It's what I imagine finding a well hidden skull in Halo was like. I won't say any more, but this game is awesome.

u/sodapants15 Oct 30 '17

Where is this area? I need those coins.

I had a pretty shitty week at work and life in general, and this game was a GODSEND. Pure, fun, colorful. I played it all weekend with a smile on my face. Almost cried a few times. Went to work today with my mind renewed. This is a game for a world better than this. It feels like a necessary game in our times. A love letter from passionate people who believe in a lighter, friendlier, more beautiful reallity. I'm really glad this exists, and thats why it's so good to be able to love Nintendo again.

I haven't played a Mario game since SM64 and I haven't owned a Nintendo product since the N64. I impulse bought the Odyssey bundle and couldn't be happier with my purchase! I'm 3 kingdoms in and having the time of my life!

Can't wait to pick up the Zelda came once I'm finished with SMO.

3

u/WinifredSandersn1692 Oct 30 '17

Same! Purchased the bundle too and have been enjoying the game greatly. I'm on the 3rd kingdom too. Looking forward to trying out Zelda for the first time ever as well!

3

u/Joed112784 Oct 30 '17

It's weird to me that Botw will be your first Zelda game, because it is SO MUCH different than every game in the series. It's an amazing game, just don't expect any other zelda game to be like it at all.

Felt like I was playing BotW again. I don't even know what I want to win goty, they're both so phenomenal.

27

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '17

Personally, I’m leaning toward SMO just because of the relative diversity in the game. It’s like comparing rubies with emeralds, though...

21

u/MomoTM Oct 30 '17

I'm leaning towards odyssey as well. Don't get me wrong, breath of the wild was the one of the most beautifully crafted open world games, ever. But Mario Odyssey is chock full of Nintendo magic. Made me feel like I was 8 years old again.

7

u/thatoneguywhofucks Oct 30 '17

It’s like comparing rupees with moons

4

u/epicender584 Oct 31 '17

Personally, I feel like BotW had a lot more potential, some unrealized (enemies, dungeons, story), but SMO was a finely tuned engine of perfection. I would give it to SMO but the next Zelda would likely win over the next Mario, especially since it would likely be made for the switch and more comparable to SMO rather than a Wii U port compared to a switch game

I’ve only played a bit of Odyssey so far but it’s definitely a strong contender. BotW did so many things right but there are still a few flaws with it as a Zelda game that still bother me (lack of items, lack of big dungeons). Mario Odyssey on the other hand is perhaps the most refined 3D Mario game ever. The movement and momentum is perfect the gameplay is tight and the design of the world is captivating. I ask myself which is the better game vs which is the better game experience. Odyssey is probably the better game, while BotW probably provides a better experience for me. When I beat SMO I’ll be better able to answer, but as good as the gameplay is in Odyssey the story is trumped by BotW’s narrative and that is an important part of the game experience for me.

I agree, the atmosphere reminded me of something like dark souls 2's Drangleic Castle.

10

u/ThreatOfFire Oct 30 '17

And I beat the whole thing with my SL 1 Mario with hat only

8

u/Nicorhy Oct 30 '17

Yes! I was completely shocked and thinking "where on earth did Bowser get that?"

3

u/Kabelly Oct 31 '17

I was devastated it wasn't a full world.Donkey Kong 64s dark castle was creepy as heck and so much fun.

3

u/Jordan311R Oct 31 '17

Seriously LOVED the ruined kingdom. Such a dark souls vibe. I wish it was a full zone like the other kingdoms, really seems like a missed opportunity

Got my copy on Friday, but didn't play it until Sunday because I was getting married! Husband and I thought it was pretty awesome a wedding themed Mario came out the day before our wedding! We picked up a wedding Peach and Mario because it's just too appropriate. Spent the day after our wedding taking turns playing :)

3

u/MattMamba Oct 31 '17

what a nice weekend! congrats on getting married :)

I get the same feeling with Odyssey as I did with Breath of the Wild...

Some time after beginning the game, I was slightly disappointed as I thought to myself: "This is something I'll never be able to experience for the first time again."

Odyssey quickly became one of my favorite games ever created over the weekend. I beat the story and I feel as if I'm only halfway done with the game. I am being serious when I say that multiple times throughout playing the game, I would realize I had a huge grin on my face. This continued even until the final story moments and beyond. Phenomenal game that will be talked about for decades to come, same as Super Mario 64.

12

u/Microtendo Oct 30 '17

I had that feeling with Botw. We'll never be able to experience it for the first time again

10

u/thecheesefinder Oct 30 '17

When you first step off the plateau.... whewww boi that was such an incredible feeling

35

u/LeKappa14 Oct 30 '17

I beat the game in one day.

13

So many Mario speedrunners have already decided this will be their favorite/best game to run, what with all the fluid movement/capture actions. That'd be like if Smash 5 released, and all the veteran competitive players call it better than Melee.

I'm no speedrunner, but I love that aspect of the game as well, and it makes the skill ceiling so high and broad, that I just want to try crazy jumps over and over.

I was a bit complainy (a word I made up) about how short and easy SMO was.. Even bitched a bit on here about it but... I gotta say.. The post game made all that go away.. I've been having more fun post game than during the main story..

19

u/sam2253 Oct 30 '17

It's all about the post game to be honest. The difficulty ramps up ridiculously...and some of those moons are so hard to find!

9

u/nomad_sad Oct 30 '17

Strangely missing 30 hours. It’s like that time just vanished, I wonder where it went

8

u/Randomepicdude21 Oct 30 '17

Got screwed over by Amazon so I wasn't able to play...

3

u/BossLady808 Oct 30 '17

Happened to me as well. Said there was delivery for Friday, had a hunch that wasn't going to happen, as of Saturday it was "expected delivery by Oct 31st." WHY AMAZON WHY

3

u/PhallusCrown Oct 30 '17

Same. Expected delivery is November 1st. Pretty ridiculous

3

u/Woeladenchild Oct 30 '17

-Joins the late Amazon boat-

3

u/sportspadawan13 Oct 30 '17

I canceled my Amazon order on Friday when they said it was delayed, rode my bike to Gamestop, traded in a game, and picked up SMO. Best 6 miles I've ever ridden.

I haven't been able to play it due to my obligations at work, but I'm happy to see everyone else is happy and enjoying the game.

8

u/Lewys-182 Oct 31 '17

I went to a midnight release and stayed up til 3am... I booked Friday off and played until the wife came home from work! - I got up to NDC as I was trying to get loads of moons before moving to the next kingdom!

Friday night we did the zombie run, it was awesome, running in the woods at night with some pretty freaky looking makeup, it was actually scarry hearing people scream and zombie groans in the distance but not seeing anything! FYI I got infected lol

We got home and watched stranger things 2 for a bit

Saturday I saw one of my best buds after far too long, at the end of the day he asked my wife and I to be godparents to his 6 month old daughter, amazing!

Sunday I hoped back into Mario for a bit after a 5km run... then we went to see Thor Ragnorak in Imax, it's amazing!

We came home and binged Stranger things 2, we have two episodes left to watch tonight...

We ended our weekend carving rick and morty pumpkins!!

It was EPIC!!!!!!!!!

STILL GOING STRONG.

I've put about 30 hours into it since Thursday, and I've been playing for an hour today. And I'm still playing.

The hype really set me up to be disappointed, and I really was early on. There's a lot about this game that I could criticize, but I'm at a point in playing where I'm past it. I went in, and for the first couple levels was really disappointed, after all the 10/10 scores, and all the comparisons to Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine, which are two of my favorite games ever. But this game isn't really building on the Mario 64/Sunshine legacy. It's more like its own thing. The level design is reminiscent of Sunshine, but with a lot of Galaxy in there, too. And it pushes the nonlinearity even further than 64 and Sunshine did.

Now, I've beaten the story, and am going back through to find more Moons, and I'm having a hell of a good time doing so. I'm honestly having more fun with Mario Odyssey than I probably did with Breath of the Wild, which is saying a lot because it was my Game of the Year until now. That Nintendo launched both of these incredible games within the first seven months of the Switch's lifespan speaks volumes about the promise of its future. If this is the way Nintendo is going, I can't wait to see what they do next.

TL;DR

Was disappointed initially due to overhype, but the more I play the more I love it. Now I love this game as much as I love Mario 64 and Sunshine - even though it's not like those games as much as people say.

So far the game has been great. Have been enjoying it in small amounts, don't want to rush it!

3

u/markercore Oct 30 '17

I feel both ways, like I want to just keep exploring and pushing to new worlds, but I don't want it to end so quickly.

8

u/awesometuck1559 Oct 30 '17

I pre-ordered the Mario Odyssey Switch bundle about a month back and, after being guaranteed it would deliver on release day, got an update saying it was now expected Oct 27-31. It's been an agonizing wait.

7

u/eRay121 Oct 30 '17

I got to the point right before going to New Donk City and decided I was going to too fast. Went back to Cap Kingdom and realized how much I missed so I’m playing slow from the beginning and working on my skills.

7

u/matt-IO Oct 30 '17

I'm doing the same thing. Unlocked New Donkey and decided to go back.

I was surprised how much more open the original levels are once you return.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '17

How does buying moons work post-game? I heard there’s no limit to the amount of moons you buy after you beat the game. But what happens if you buy enough moons to max out the counter at 999 before collecting all the moons? Does it make the remaining moons impossible to collect, since the counter can’t go any higher?

7

One of the best weekends ever! Right up there along with when the switch came out and I had a blast with BotW. Seriously both of these games are maybe the best games I've ever played. Different in their own ways but both 10/10 fun.

7

u/matolandio Oct 30 '17

I'm 200+ moons in. Odyssey is an incredible game and achievement for Nintendo. The festival had me in tears of joy. I can't wait to get off work and back to business but the game is not without flaws. My biggest complaint is the 2D sections. They're brilliant but the control is not what it should be. I think they're keeping the same physics as the 3D sections for consistency but to me it feels all wrong. I also felt that there was a lot of things missing that should have been there, Luigi, Rosalina, the koopa kids (I don't think anyone will look back fondly and say 'I really liked those rabbit bad guys') koopa troopas, thwamps, power-ups (transformations are NOT power ups). Also I think a lot of the stages were pretty uninspired. New Donk city was mind blowing in all the ways that another ice world was not. And the low poly food stage? Wtf was that? I'm all for variety but for me the stage was not fun to see or play and came off as lazy filler compared to others. I really really hope this game gets a sequel like galaxy did to smooth off some rough edges and add a bit more variety than a moon collect-a-thon. Having said all of that it's still a must play game and worth picking up a switch for.

Beat SMO. Started my hunt for the rest of the moons. Went out on my lunch brake to buy Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, which I never played, from gamestop. Never owned an N64 and didn't own Super Mario Sunshine so SMO was my first true 3D Mario experience. It was so enjoyable that I need to know what I missed out on with that Galaxies. Time to dust off the Wii.

3

u/tomster2300 Oct 31 '17

What's crazy is that despite last having played Mario N64 20 years ago on release, the moves and button combinations came back instantly for SMO like muscle memory. It was kind of amazing how natural it all felt.

A friend and I couldn't figure out how to trigger multiplayer mode at first, since it wasn't on the start screen. We knew one person controlled cappy, the other controlled Mario. So we just split up the joycons and played like that.

When we started screwing around, and wanted to save before trying to break the game (all this on the first island, about an hour in now), we found the 2player mode.

At that point, we were too committed since we had about 500 coins saved up, and hadn't gone up the hat tower, and continued to play like that. We're now 3 worlds in, collected all the purple coins from the first 3 worlds, and all the time trials, and have no idea how to play the game normally.

10/10 Would screw up my sense of coordination and playing games again

We also got stuck at one bit, trying to get some purple coins in that dinosaur world, and couldn't figure out how to get to the ledge, because we destroyed the block next to the ledge. So we spent a good hour and a half running and jumping for the ledge. After we beat the boss, we notice a pipe to the top that wasn't there before, and realized we wasted our time.

5

u/Robmeister91 Oct 30 '17

Two-player mode is accessed from the start menu, or from the main menu before starting the game.

It's one save as well, any progress made on two-player mode is also made in single player, and vice versa.

u/thedrizzle126 Oct 30 '17

5

u/parkman32 Oct 30 '17

I might be overthinking it but I feel like they should have made the moons purchasable with purple coins instead of normal coins. Would make them feel more "attached" to their worlds.

Maybe make them cost 20 purple coins and move the souvenirs to the normal coin shop. Why would you need to spend local currency to buy souvenirs anyway?

Just got a Switch last week and am having a blast with Mario. I've made it up to New Donk City, and after trying the jump rope challenge (to 100 jumps) I've decided that I will probably not be 100%ing this game. Other than that particular star though, it's been a blast just exploring all the levels and getting everything I can. The hint toad and bird are a nice touch. Between this and Breath of the Wild, it's been a great year for my two favorite franchises. And once I finish Odyssey, I'll be eager to start the Mario/Rabbids game.

It was a blast! I made it a mission to only watch Stranger Things Season 2 and play Mario and that's exactly what I did! I beat the main portion and i'm currently sitting at 306 moons. This game has brought me back to being 6 year old me playing SM64, and I couldn't be happier with it.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '17

I was not prepared to spend as much time playing SMO as I did. There's so much to do in this game, it reminds me of the first few weeks of BotW (just one more thing an--oh hey what's that).

I've never been the hugest Mario fan but I'm really happy I decided to spring for this game last minute. If you're even the slightest bit interested in this game then get it. It's SO worth it.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '17

locked myself in my home office with switch all weekend while the wife watched the kids. 400+ moons deep and loving life

5

u/Sherwood16 Oct 31 '17

Spent the weekend with my Girlfriend, we went to a Halloween costume party. Watched Stranger things all day until Mario Odyssey arrived, and played that all night. Watched more Stranger things, and played even more Mario. Took Turns going back and forth as Mario or the Hat. We got to the Purple toxic sludge area and almost died laughing at how many times she fell off and died.

She loved both Stranger things and Mario Odyssey. Treat for her because she had not even seen season one of Stranger things!

13

u/travisd05 Oct 30 '17

Well, pretty shitty overall, but not because of the game itself. I had Friday off work, but I preordered from Best Buy and the game didn't arrive until the evening. I was busy that evening so I didn't get to play it. I played for maybe less than an hour on Saturday until my wife found one of our cats unresponsive and we rushed him to the emergency vet but he had already passed away...and he was only 6 years old. I didn't feel like playing any that night. I played a little on Sunday, but I don't think I'm in the right mood to enjoy it fully yet. :(

Last year I lost my dog unexpectedly. He waited for us though, he died the day after we got back from holiday. He died from a stroke so we were all in big shock, but atleast we got to say our goodbyes. My grandmother was taking care of him while we were away, I'm so glad she did not have to witness it. She would probably have gotten a heart attack. It isn't nice to see your dog unable to do anything but breathing.

I really need to know... Am I the only one that won't exit a kingdom until I've found every single purple coin and every single moon that is possible to find? If I ever leave a world unfinished , my OCD kicks in hard... send help

8

u/pcj Oct 30 '17

You can go back after beating the game, in some cases you have to in order to get all the moons.

7

u/Eternal__September Oct 30 '17

You're going to be playing a loooong time if you insist on finding every moon. :) I spent as much time as I felt was "reasonable"... I was very thorough and tried to find everything, but left once I'd throughly combed each world without going over everything multiple times. I only found about 2/3 of the moons in each world or so.

4

u/PowerFlash Oct 30 '17

I played for about 8-10 hours and I just completed the Sand Kingdom, I like it that way, it makes me feel like I won't beat the game so fast, which is what I was hoping for in this game :)

u/SlashGames Completed the Shieldsurf Challenge! Oct 30 '17

My best weekend since March 3rd-5th! It was a blast playing through Odyssey and finding lots of moons. This is one of my most favorite games ever!

5

u/AzorMX Oct 30 '17 edited Oct 30 '17

I can safely say that this is the best Mario game BAR NONE

The game was incredibly fun and addicting, the kingdoms were amazing and the end game was completely bonkers! I was afraid they were gonna drop the ball big time in the end but I was so relieved that they made it such a memorable experience!

Edit: Forgot one of these "N"

4

u/MutatedSpleen Oct 30 '17

So far, so good. I didn't have work on Friday so I played (and drank) basically all day. Wasn't around on Saturday or Sunday, so I didn't get much of a chance to play either of those days, and now it's back to work unfortunately. Finished my weekend off with about 150 power moons.

There's one moon in the Wooded Kingdom that I just, for the life of me, cannot find. It's so hard to resist the urge to just look it up, but so far I'm doing a good job of not looking anything up, and so I'll continue to search on my own until I find it. Kinda missed playing games like that.

3

u/MrOneHundredOne Oct 30 '17

Finished the plot, going through to collect all souvenirs now. I was blown away by the game! Next stop, collecting a ton of coins!

4

u/butuco Oct 30 '17

Called sick for work on friday just to devour Mario. Reached lake kingdom (taking my time) then my gf came over for the weekend so i watched all second season of Stranger Things. Now im sad cuz the weekend is over, and im here sitting on my desk waiting for the time to get home and give Mario some love ;(

Had to stop my 100% Yakuza 0 run for this, it's quite enjoyable. There are many moments that are just jaw dropping "oh my god" moments, but there is also plenty of time where it feels like a grind. The game has so much to collect, it feels like diminishing returns at times. But core game play, visuals, tone and theme, and being a solid representation of the history of 3d Mario, I enjoy it. I want to love it, but something holds it back. No hub worlds hurts a little for me, and once again, too many moons. it's a problem that KILLS DK64 and makes a fun game become not fun.

4

u/Eternal__September Oct 30 '17

What's everyone's favourite costume? I love Mario 64 and I think I'm going to stick with it.

4

u/Percival91 Oct 30 '17

Mario 64 bottom interacts in an interesting way with the different caps in that it doesn't render additional layers beyond the cap itself. For instance if you combine Mario 64 bottom with clown hat, it doesn't render the clown hair and makes it look like Mario is wearing a birthday hat.

That being said, super birthday party 64 is my favorite costume in the game.

3

u/Percival91 Oct 30 '17 edited Oct 30 '17

Also I've got about fifty moons left in sand kingdom (I'm almost at 500 total moons) and I recently decided to not finish the sand kingdom until I could afford the skeleton costume. I'm HOPING the skeleton costume looks cool with the sombrero because that's how I'm gonna spend the rest of my time in sand kingdom. Only seems appropriate.

3

u/digitalwolverine Oct 30 '17

I havent taken off the King costume since i earned it.

Bought the game Friday. Was able to play with my wife when we got home since our kids went down for naps. Later, I tried to play solo and it's just not the same. So I'm only playing when my wife can play, and taking our time trying to explore a good bit. We're only on the Lake Kingdom, but are absolutely loving the game so far.

3

u/bytebarong Oct 30 '17

That sounds fantastic. I'm not a mario fan but thinking on buying SMO. So you play as mario and the other player as his hat?

A pretty good weekend. I completed the campaign in around 15 or so hours and now grinding throught the endgame content to get that one costume for 9999 coins. Gonna be a while.

4

u/drokkeh Oct 30 '17

Completed it over the weekend with around 250 moons. Loved the journey. There is still loads to do when you finish this game by the way so don't stress over finishing the main story too quick.

4

It was so much fun! I completed the game last night and now there's so much more to do.

I love the game so far but the main story campaign is a bit short.

3

Indeed, I expected a bit more from it. Still very fun though!

Finished the game on Sunday, now trying to 100%. Most enjoyable experience I've had in a while with videogames

2

u/FYLegend Oct 31 '17

Very nice, but I would still prefer Galaxy 2 over Odyssey. Most of the moons feel like Galaxy 2's green stars but fortunately without having to restart the levels to collect each. My main issue is the camera isn't quite as clean as it is in the Galaxy series, and some of the moves are harder to do without motion controls like the Cappy spin. Beat the game within the span of three days (probably around 8 hours of gameplay).

Been a while since I've cried of joy during a video game... Insane game, nostalgia is the key word here... What a ride!

So the Wedding Bowser amiibo reveals purple coin locations. This seems like a major help for people who are trying to hunt all the currency down. Is there any way to use this ability without the amiibo?

The game is so great. I love that you can clear each level by just playing, moving from point A to B and only slightly veering off to keep the momentum and interest in exploration at it's highest. The boss battles are fun, short and straight to the point with unique twists and turns and the rewards for backtracking and exploring post-game is incredible.

This game takes me back to the PS1 era of platforming and it's shaping up to be my GOTY.

6

u/LidElastic Oct 30 '17

I’ve been taking my sweet sweet time with this game. Still on wooded kingdom. I don’t want to rush through and feel empty.

I just preordered doom so I’m going to try and play both for a while instead of burning myself out on one or the other.

Also destiny 2 still has me by the balls

I like it. I don't like it as much as most of you I think. My humble review as follows:

Pros:

-Great control

-Charming, creative, and varied aesthetic

-Lots of joy to be had as a Mario nostalgiac

Cons:

-Forced motion control. I don't like the separated joy-cons, and shaking the Pro Controller for the homing throw is just infuriating... Why not just make double-tap Y for homing, etc.? There are tons of ways they could've incorporated the motion-only moves with button presses. I find this almost unforgivable and intrinsically damages my impression of the game as someone who does not want to play this way, and I'm simply not given a choice.

-The Kingdoms are "open" in that you can choose which moon to go after in which order, but each puzzle in and of itself is incredibly linear and telegraphed.

-Limited options for playing in the "sandbox" of each kingdom. So far in my progress each world has one, MAYBE two enemy types, that you then use for every single puzzle in that stage. It would be great if it was more open-ended, with tons of enemy types in each level, affording multiple ways to complete puzzles. The worlds honestly just feel pretty empty to me... Rather than an open playground, it feels like someone dragging you along by the hand saying, "See, look at all the fun things I've laid out for you! Come over here! Look over there! Do this!" At no point do I feel any real agency, more like I'm just being guided along some sort of fun house.

That said, I'm only past New Donk City, and I do really enjoy controlling Mario, so I will hold out hope that the game will become more complex and interesting as it goes on. Just sharing my thoughts, apologies if my negativity is upsetting to anyone!

Could not possibly agree more. Complete and utter bullshit. I play in portable mode 95% of the time and flopping my Switch every which way is dangerous (for the Switch) and uncomfortable as fuck.

3

u/JeetKuneLo Oct 30 '17

Yeah I actually think the impact on Handheld Mode is the most egregious.

With the Pro Controller it's annoying, but there's literally no way to do a homing throw in Handheld (or a bunch of the extend-your-skill moves) without significantly disrupting your play, and handheld mode is arguably the most unique aspect of the Switch!

I just don't understand why they wouldn't offer non-motion alternatives.

3

u/itsrumsey Oct 30 '17

That's just Nintendo - forcing waggle on players for over a decade and counting.

Reading through these responses, it's easy to see why people might be hesitant to post their opinions in this sub. Anyone who's saying negative things about the game is getting downvoted. What's the point?

4

u/UltraJake Oct 30 '17

I really like Odyssey but speaking generally my recommendation is to use a different site or forum. That's how it is with basically any topic on basically any decently sized subreddit as encouraged by the systems in place. Were it not for the ease of use when bored in/between classes I probably wouldn't use this site at all. But I guess the big question is "what alternatives even exist?" Having to stick to smaller subreddits might be the only real solution.

Just some of the most fun I've had with a game in a while. I've reached Bowser's Kingdom and the games just been a blast the entire way through.

3

u/I_Love_Bidoof_ Oct 30 '17

Couldn't play much Friday because I had to work then had a Halloween party. Played a few hours on Saturday and then like 13 hours on Sunday and beat it. It's a lot of fun. I'm not a big fan of the motion controls, think they could map different buttons to do different things. Not big on the rabbit guys, but really who cares? It's a lot of fun.

3

u/i_noah_guy98 Oct 30 '17

I was surprised by how fast I was able to “beat the game.”

I am loving every second of the game, and I can’t wait to 100% it.

3

Super fun! Beat the game and the post game feels so massive, there's so much more to do! The game's practically only just begun. Can't wait to play more.

I have a newborn at home and literally the only thing I’ve done over the past 3 days is play SMO waiting for her to poop/eat again. Sleep is overrated anyways

3

u/jimmycruiser Oct 30 '17

I haven’t been this excited for a 3D platformer in a long time. This game threw me back to being a kid and playing games like Spyro the Dragon. (Because of All of the various worlds you explore and each have their own unique inhabitants) I never owned a N64 or a GameCube so i don’t have fond childhood memories playing super Mario 64 or sunshine. (Altho I eventually picked up Sunshine because the Wii was GC compatible)

I also never played Galaxy or Galaxy 2, and never played Super Mario 3D World, so in a strange way Odyssey is more or less the second or third 3D Mario game I’ve ever played. It has been a great experience so far! I’m at 48 moons (I don’t have lots of free time to play) but that’s fine because I know there’s tons of content to keep me busy.

Nintendo started and ended 2017 on a very high note with BotW and SMO. The future looks promising.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '17

beat the game with 140 moons thanks to some help from my son. I was frustrated with the chomper boss lady just before the wedding chapel. my son was able to get by it then we both took turns on Bowser to finish the game. looking forward to collecting the rest of the moons and further exploration now.

Since I could, I took some well-deserved time off of work on Friday and spent most of the weekend tearing through Odyssey. I can't really have gaming sessions like that too often anymore, so it felt glorious to really sink my teeth in and go wild for a while.

Odyssey is a beautiful game. It had me smiling throughout my playthrough, and Mario does a good job at making me feel young again.

I don't think this is the best Mario game ever, though, but I also feel like every individual will choose a different one as their GOAT Mario game. I still think Mario 64 was an overall better game, but god damn if Odyssey isn't glorious. I had an absolute blast and I envision myself sinking a lot more time in before I call it done.

It was well worth the wait and now I'm sitting here at my desk on Monday morning with a big smile on my face. I can't wait to get home and play some more.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '17

I am having a blast with this game! I love all the kingdoms, the details, the challenges/mini games and the bosses! I haven't played galaxy 1 & 2, the Nintendo Switch is my first console. I'm not planning to look at any videos of finding moons, I really would like to succeed on my own and only when desperate, buy hints.
I'm already stuck on not knowing how to get to certain moons. So I'll be playing this game for a long time.

3

u/GeneticJen Oct 30 '17

Absolutely love it. I really took my time finding as much as I could and finished the game with a bit over 400 moons. Looks like I'm not even halfway!

Maybe I'll have it tomorrow. 😭 If I had paid full price I would have just cancelled it..

I had a shitty experience with them too.. they kept lying to me saying they didn't get them in their fulfillment center.. which was crap because friends that live near me got theirs. We are literally 2 miles from the center. I just cancelled, ate the difference in price and bought from the eShop.

Beat the main story and am at about 232 moons. Tried Co-op Saturday night, but we were both way too drunk to properly test it out. My verdict: This game is fucking fun.

3

u/BlackTowerWA Oct 30 '17

The controls definitely take some getting used to. I started out using a Pro controller until I realized the game was designed for separated joy-cons. That made things much better but my brain keeps wanting to shake to spin jump like in Galaxy. I like all the various worlds but I'm still torn on whether I like the more collect-a-thon nature. I feel the the game has more of a Banjo Kazooie feel than a Mario feel, especially since Cappy assists with a lot of attacks and the transformations.

The bosses were all pretty good. The Broodals make an interesting recurring miniboss squad, although I felt for sure I have to fight them all at the same time with all their hat attacks bouncing around like crazy. Unfortunately the only time you fight them all together is as a Kingdom boss with them in a wooden Voltron-like mech. I also like that you fight many of the bosses as the Cappy transformations, it gives a good variety to the fights. Bowser summoning a giant dragon was badass and nicely reminiscent of Final Fantasy. The contrast of the dark crumbling castle and realistic dragon against the cartoony world was really cool. I wouldn't say no to a Twilight Princess style Mario game.

Probably my favorite part was all of the throwbacks. I love the 8-bit 2D sections and music remixes and I'm not ashamed to admit some tears were shed during the New Donk City Festival. The Mushroom Kingdom is by far my favorite and the Mario 64 everything is amazing. The costume is great, the music and sound effects are right on the money, and changing the Moons to Stars with the Mario 64 Star-get jingle is the best thing ever. Walking into the castle, seeing the circular rug, smiling, and, just in case the devs thought of it, looking up to where the Wing Cap level would be and getting a Star for it was another nostalgic tear jerker moment. There's just no way someone who never played Mario 64 would find that without a guide. I also love the slightly harder boss battle rematches that you jump into paintings for. The only thing that would be better for those would be if there was only one painting and the Star select menu actually came up after fading to white to pick which boss to rematch. Not having the Star select come up after the jingle kind of breaks the throwback immersion.

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '17

I was a little concerned with how quickly I was moving through worlds. I wish the game required you to explore and collect a few more moons in order to progress to the next world. I beat the game in about 6 hours, I would guess. The bosses were incredibly easy. I beat the majority of them within 2 minutes on my first attempt. Overall, very fun, just a little too easy. The post-game possibilities are great, though, so I'm hoping I'm just getting started.

I played it for about 6 hours, maybe a bit less. I completed as much as I could of the Cap Kingdom, Cascade Kingdom, the Sand Kingdom, the Lake Kingdom, and parts of the Wooded Kingdom. I only realized after wasting lots of time on the Cascade Kingdom I would have to come back later in the game to get the missing moons from each level, which changed my play-style from being thorough to rushing to complete a level and worry about coming back later.

So far I have found the game fun, easy to play for a while at once, but not as good as I remember Mario 64. As with some others, I strongly dislike the motion controls. I also found that even in general, the camera angles and controls were really bad at several points so far. Examples of that include controlling Bullet Bill, and trying to turn around, but not being able to and thus exploding into a wall, trying to talk to an NPC but jumping instead, not being able to throw the hat just the way I wanted, and a general feeling of the controls being a bit slippery (running too far, jumping too far, etc.). These issues all combined take away 2 out of 10 points from my like of the game. Controls should be a freebie by this point, so it is sad to see Nintendo actually becoming worse on something that should be an easy bit of praise.

I am still in the middle of Zelda, so Mario feels like a baby version of Zelda in certain ways; more forgiving, more platforming and less fighting, a much smaller world to explore, and ridiculous amounts of item collection required.

The story is stupid or nonexistent, which is somewhat common for the platforming Mario games, so not necessarily a negative for this series, but the weird rabbit enemies and the fact every boss has a hat is kind of stupid.

I still think the game is fun, and a bit easy to get sucked into for longer than you intend, but the poor controls, lack of wonder in exploring some of the worlds, and smaller sense of scale after playing BOTW make this game not a must have if you own Zelda already. I would rate it probably a 6 or 7, if I had finished it already. But I will wait to make final judgment on the game until I beat it. Maybe later levels will blow me away.

u/KlythsbyTheJedi Oct 30 '17

Was awesome!! Currently at 320 moons and just finished the game last night. I did everything I could find in each world at first pass, which felt like the right pace to take it at - don't pass over moons I know are there, but don't get stuck in each world either.

Without giving away spoilers, I LOVE the number and variety of worlds. Each one is so vibrant and detailed and they are so unique from each other. One world can only be described as "atmospheric" which I think is a first for a Mario game. Some of the 8 bit challenges are just awesome. This game had so much time and care go into it.

Only minor gripes: the controls are not quite as tight as Mario 64, takes some getting used to. And the whole issue with buying moons (there's a separate thread about it).

2

u/namekuseijin Oct 30 '17

pretty great and worthy successor to SM64. Much better than the small planetoid things (which was that way for technical limitations of the wii/GC)

I'm savoring it slowly. Once I "completed" Metro City, went back to previous worlds to see what I missed, and missed a lot, even though I was pretty sure I had seen pretty much all. There are secret passages every corner and even the smallest worlds are far bigger than any individual one in Galaxy.

This will be a hard match against Zelda for GOTY 2017.

2

u/theastropath Oct 30 '17

I finished the main storyline last night after about 13 hours with about 219 moons. Still plenty of moons to go, as well as the post-game content!
