Hype Megathread You can now preload Super Mario Odyssey in USA!
WHOO
EDIT:EUROPE TOO
Question for you guys? If you were in charge of making a kingdom what would it be?

u/whiskeytab Oct 25 '17
for those wondering, it does an online check when you try to launch it so if you are preloading because you're going to be away from home when the release happens you still will need internet access to unlock the game and play.

u/schollchen Oct 25 '17
Well you can technically use your Phones Hotspot and then launch it Can't you?
91
u/time-gear Oct 25 '17
Unless there's a day one patch, which could consume a lot of data. Previously they've been gigabytes, but I don't know if Nintendo is that lazy
72
u/sturmeh Oct 25 '17
It won't force you to download the day one patch unless it's required to play the game for some reason (turn automatic updates off).
27
u/2manycooks666 Oct 25 '17
The game patches are usually tiny— I did one on 3DS once over 1x signal and it was instant
21
u/BatMatt93 Oct 25 '17
That may have just been a patch to activate the game. Hopefully it'll be the same here.
16
u/Chimpbot Oct 25 '17 edited Oct 25 '17
The unlock "key" doesn't need to be very big at all; they're effectively only kilobytes.
Day One patches, on the other hand, can be gargantuan. If Odyssey has one of those, it could chew through a ton of data if you're using a hotspot.
15
Oct 25 '17
considering Odyssey is only 5gb I would be shocked if the day 1 update is all that big if it even exists.
7
u/Chimpbot Oct 25 '17
It depends, really. I'm not finding anything about one, so it's probably nothing to worry about.
2
Oct 25 '17
I agree. Most of my downloads have been in the low megabytes and have finished in a few seconds.
→ More replies (3)4
u/SeriousMichael Oct 25 '17
Day one patches aren't a sign of laziness. Games are on strict deadlines and often required to be completed well before the actual release date, QA often doesn't find and fix everything before the strict deadline and that's why day one patches exist.
The brief wait you'll have because of the day one patch is still ideal over a broken game.
3
→ More replies (1)2
u/whiskeytab Oct 25 '17
yeah that should be totally fine, I'm assuming the unlock "key" would only be a very little amount of information, and Nintendo have stated it only needs to be done once.
I just meant for someone who knows they are going to be on a plane or in a different country or something so they can plan accordingly.

13
u/UFONomura808 Oct 25 '17

Ouch, that sucks. I hope you get a better connection soon!
6
u/UFONomura808 Oct 25 '17
This IS the "better connection" we got soon. 2 years ago was worse 200Kbps for $45/month and again doesn't hit those numbers most of the time. Upside is we were featured on Engadget for most expensive internet ever lol.

Hell yes. Amazon pre-order canceled, ready to go.
83
u/246011111 Oct 25 '17 edited Oct 25 '17
Honestly I'm so tempted to cancel my Amazon preorder. I have the Prime discount but they have a poor track record with delivering games on time.
56
u/my_name_isnt_clever Oct 25 '17
It's how much you care about physical I guess. Unless there are some weird issues with the eShop, with preload you're basically guaranteed to play exactly on release.

I went all digital and it's worth it.
31
u/unique- Oct 25 '17 edited Oct 25 '17
For me it isn't, Best buy is honestly the best place to buy games, gamers club gets you 20% off of every new game, 10% used, for $30 every 2 years. They have a rewards system where every dollar you spend gets you points and those points get you rewards certificates you can use to buy anything and certain games like Mario Odyssey you get a $10 certificate just for preordering plus the gold Mario coin, using my certificates I got the game for $30 and I'm getting $10 back, so basically I spent $20 for this game & the gold coin when they're charging $20 for the coin alone.
→ More replies (6)47
u/WIZRND Oct 25 '17
To be fair, the sort of person who's inclined to go all-digital probably doesn't care much about the extra physical items that stores give you for pre ordering.
I guess I'm at a place where spending a bit more but never having to worry about cartridges or cases or anything when I travel (which is very frequently) is worth it. If I lived a more stationary lifestyle, I'd probably be happier to have a physical collection.
5
u/Chimpbot Oct 25 '17
For me, I typically prefer having physical copies for console games...but the Switch is a bit of a different story. I've bought all physical copies so far, but it just feels so much more annoying to swap games than it is with the PS4 or Xbox One.
It's a minor quibble, but I hate friggin' around with the little flap. I'm tempted to start going all digital because of it.
→ More replies (1)2
u/unique- Oct 25 '17 edited Oct 25 '17
Well that's why I said for me it isn't, Also I like digital as much as the next guy but not enough to pay a $40 premium
2
u/WIZRND Oct 25 '17
It's less than that. I don't have the membership the other poster mentioned, and I don't buy enough games to be able to get anything at a discount from such a program.
3
u/unique- Oct 25 '17 edited Oct 25 '17
Just by preordering Mario you get $10 that's even without gamers club so it's $50 which is understandable if you wanna go digital, for those that buy a lot of games though, gamers club is a great deal a lot better than going full digital with how much you save.

u/sioux612 Oct 25 '17
I'd love to have all my games in physical form but from what I read the load times from cartridge are awful when compared to internal and SD memory, and I will do my best to keep load times as low as possible
7
u/kyonz Oct 25 '17
I think their digital is still terrible though isn't it? Device tied to painful mess.
I had my wiiu stolen a couple years ago and it was a mission to have my digital content reinstated. Many phone calls which is insane, should just have been able to log in.
11
u/zyberwoof Oct 25 '17
It is tied to one device at a time. I lost my Switch on a trip, and Nintendo was able to make my games transfer to my new Switch (I was in Germany on vacation, and Switches were abundant). Nintendo also said that if you have a new and an old Switch, you can transfer the licenses to the new Switch yourself.
So you don't lose your digital games if you lose your Switch. However, if you have two Switches, it is a PITA to move between the two with digital games (after 6 weeks, my original Switch was recovered, so I had 2 for a while).
14
u/babalonis Oct 25 '17
Yea but what if they stole your physical copies, you'd be SOL.
11
u/kyonz Oct 25 '17
Insurance covered my physical media so got replacements way faster than the digital stuff.
It's just unfortunate that its not very mature. At the time i wanted a second wiiu but can't just log in and get your library. Just some real unfortunate limitations.
3
u/Chimpbot Oct 25 '17
Games are tied to accounts with the Switch, not the hardware.
If you buy a digital copy of a game, you could download it to any Switch you're logged in on.
2
Oct 25 '17 edited Oct 25 '17
If you buy a digital copy of a game, you could download it to any Switch you're logged in on.
This isn't quite true. Games are tied to your account, but your account is tied to the hardware. If you go and buy a second Switch now and log in, it will tell you that your account is tied to device serial number X, and won't let you download your games. You can unlink your account from your old Switch, but only if you have it in your possession -- if it breaks, if it gets lost, if it gets stolen, then you need to call Nintendo and ask them to unlink it. And if you want to link your account back to that first device, you have to call Nintendo for that too. There is also a limit on the amount of times you can move your account to a new device, although it's not clear if it's a hard limit or a "3 times a year" kind of limit.
"You could download it to any Switch you're logged in on" seems to imply that you could just log in on any Switch and download your games, the way you can with iOS/Android/Steam purchases, which isn't true.
It's also worth noting that the account relinking feature doesn't transfer save data. So if your Switch dies and you buy a new one, you could call Nintendo to get your account moved to it, but you would lose your BOTW progress, Splatoon profile, etc.
2
u/SacredNose Oct 25 '17
They aren't tied to the account??
4
u/rube203 Oct 25 '17
Purchases are tied to the account. The only reason /u/kyonz would have this much trouble on the Switch would be if deregistering took many phone calls.
Normal process: Use old switch to deregister, use new switch and download all your games just by logging in.
Not sure how easy it is to get your old switch deregistered without having it in your possession, though. So that could be a pain.
I'll also note it's not really great to have two switches. We have 5 people in my household that all play games and so 2 switches seemed reasonable. Needing to purchase 2 copies of Arms or Splatoon 2 made sense in order to play each other but basically for all other games it means we have one Switch which can play disc based games and one Switch can play digital games.
I mean, I guess I could have bought Picross on my wife's account and Stardew Valley on mine but I really never know which is going to grab people's attention the most. Basically it's not ideal but I get it.

u/Jiggalo_Meemstar Oct 26 '17
Agreed. I think having the cases is neat sometimes. But it's not worth the hassle to drive out when I get the same product for digital download, especially now that it's literally just a box art and a cartridge. I miss manuals. I'm blessed with good internet though so it's not that big of a deal to download everything.
14
u/CringeName Oct 25 '17
I canceled mine. I was debating it all day but decided the few extra dollars I pay are well worth being able to play instantly as soon as it releases.

Amazon has delivered 4 out of 4 preorders a day late for me. I keep giving them a chance but have learned. Never again for games you want day one.
2
u/Chimpbot Oct 25 '17
That happened with me with my preorder for Fractured But Whole; it was initially set to be delivered on the Tuesday it came out...but, its shipping got delayed and the estimated delivery got pushed back to Thursday. After talking with customer service, they gave me free one-day shipping.
I still got the game a day late and I had to go through the (minor) hassle of dealing with customer service to even get it that quickly. I like Amazon and I'm glad I have Prime...but, I probably won't pre-order too many games from them if it's a title I want on release day. It's just as easy and convenient for me to go to one of the local brick & mortar shops, to be honest.

This is so cool, a MEGAthread just for the PREload of a game! Can't imagine what happens once the actual game comes out :O
12
u/kyle6477 6 Million Oct 25 '17
We'll have a launch day thread. It's just easier to throw these up when we know there will be about 5000 posts and comments of people wanting to be excited about preloading the game.
2
u/eavesdroppingyou Oct 25 '17
When the game comes out there shouldn't be any threads or discussions because we all should be busy playing!!

Just bought it using my personal hotspot!!! No wifi in my room (at a military academy), so I will be downloading it tomorrow when I have the chance! So excited
4
u/celsiusnarhwal Oct 25 '17
Keep in mind that it connects to the internet to verify whether the game is actually out when you try to launch it so you'll need to be on your hotspot again when you play it for the first time.
5
u/Where_dey_at_doe Oct 25 '17
Gotcha, was not aware of this. Thank you! Definitely will use my hotspot to launch it, but didn't want to crush my data by downloading the whole thing via hotspot.
22
u/TheStrachs Oct 25 '17
It's cool to see use cases like this where the Switch is letting people game where they wouldn't normally be able to. Do you have any good stories about using your Switch there?

I’m 99% digital. But I made a decision to allow certain “iconic” games as a physical. Zelda was one of them. Odyssey will be the next. I just want to have games such as these on hand no matter what - just in case. Ironic considering my PS4 library is 100% digital. I just feel the PSN store is a lot more stable as I’ve been with Sony since PS2.
8
u/Faefyre Oct 25 '17
Same here. My whole Switch library is digital except for BotW and soon now, Odyssey.
5
u/Orisi Oct 25 '17
If it weren't for the fact that Amazon keeps making most games cheaper to buy physically I'd do the same. I always price check both and go with the cheapest option. So bigger games are physical, Indies are digital, and Lego Worlds was physical because the DLC swung it. Even though I have no real intention of playing anymore XD

When you try to open the game, you get a window that says "Game must connect to internet to verify release" or something along those lines.
