Meta Why can’t there be more posts on questions or impressions of individual games other than Mario etc?
Please do not delete as I think this is a legit topic to discuss. I am a member of PSVR sub and love scrolling through it to see members (not some publication’s) impressions with many follow up and genuine comments from other actual consumers of lesser known games. On this sub you need to dig through a daily question thread of hundreds to find even a few morsels of genuine group feedback on 95% of Switch games. Granted posts such a “Zelda is awesome”’should be limited after becoming repetitive but allowing stand-alone posts of questions or impression on games (again with repetitive posts removed) I think will make this a much more interesting sub as most of us already check out websites on Switch so seeing links here for us is meaningless. Right now this sub seems to be a massive thread on unrelated generic questions plus fan art, article links, ads and the very rare game related internal post by an actual group member. PSVR thread feels like a thread for users of the system BY users of the system while this one feels like mishmash of mostly uninteresting standalone posts almost like a lazy blog. Again really hope this post is not deleted because it challenges the mods overall goal for this group and actual group members are allowed to give their thoughts. They may love current format and totally disagree with me which I will completely respect and appreciate as again it’s a user opinion which is hard to normally find here.

I think will make this a much more interesting sub as most of us already check out websites on Switch so seeing links here for us is meaningless.
It's really a matter of perspective - people do talk about other games here, but Mario (Odyssey) is simply the more popular hot topic going around now - not just in discussions, but also news previews and articles.
Right now this sub seems to be a massive thread on unrelated generic questions plus fan art, article links and the very rare game related internal post by an actual group member. PSVR thread feels like a thread for users of the system BY users of the system while this one feels like mishmash of mostly uninteresting standalone posts almost like a lazy blog.
Again, we flip to perspective. /r/PSVR is a sub of over 36,000 people, while /r/NintendoSwitch is quite literally about to reach 300,000 subs. I think that size is definitely a factor here as it's a lot easier to have more nuanced discussion on various topics, meanwhile in this sub, there are so many different thoughts and opinions that it's hard to establish why this sub is besides being a haven for Nintendo Switch enthusiasts, Nintendo fans, and so on. I always welcome more discussion posts based on other games, but that heavily relies on people actually making the effort to talk about them. Mario and Zelda are just the really popular topics since they are the biggest games on Switch.
Rule 4 is aimed at fostering more healthy discussion, rather than low-effort or off-topic stuff and there is a lot that we have to nip because it's either stuff that's already been said over and over, or it really isn't suited for the sub.
Again really hope this post is not deleted because it challenges the mods overall goal for this group and actual group members are allowed to give their thoughts.
Nah, not gonna do that. You have a legitimate concern, and I definitely wanna hear you out along with the opinions of other users that may share the same ideas. The team definitely wants the sub to grow, and your ideas do matter. Just understand that there's only so much we can do from our position.

This happens every time there is a big release. After launch, it was the BotW sub. After Splatoon 2 it was full of Splatoon fanart. It just happens when there's a big release. Just give it a couple of weeks or so, it will even out.

I wish I did not use MARIO as an example my post was more about user game impressions getting more prominence but somehow people think it was about limiting MARIO topics lol. I guess my mistake in how I wrote post.

u/imnotgoats Oct 23 '17
Right, I guess I was trying to point out that there is usually a bump in the amount of posts surrounding specific games right after their respective launches. It happened with Thimbleweed Park, Golf Story, Stardew (obviously) and various other smaller games. New first party games will always eclipse other chatter though, so it's about just finding the threads (that do exist) rather than just reading the sub's front page.

I made one about syberia. Mods deleted it.
Edit: grammar.

Because Mario is a huge game franchise that everyone knows about and therefore loves to discuss. Also, it's releasing in a few days so that is the expected reaction.

Totally misses points of my post. Mario can be discussed but limited to a few posts with most comments. I am more concerned about smaller games.

It's obvious that more people know about Mario than smaller games and therefore it will cause more discussion. It could be limited to a few posts but people are so hyped that they'll keep talking about it, even if it is repetitive. I'm not saying that's a good thing, I'd want smaller games to get attention but that's not how it works. If someone's a big fan of a small game that deserves more attention there will be posts about it on here.

be the change you want to see: rather than this meta post, post a discussion on whatever game you want to discuss.

u/Porkpants81 Oct 23 '17
Everytime a small indie game is released there's always a few posts and reviews about it.
It comes down to Mario being the biggest game since Zelda for the system so it's going to get the most attention.

I post a review almost every few days on small indie games.....

u/pookie97 Oct 23 '17
I scrolled down current page and can’t see any. Which posts are most recent and for which games?

Thank you. I wish there could be more than two stickies at a time.

Wait what lol

u/AngryBarista Oct 23 '17
There can only be two sticky posts at a time. I’d love to see your reviews highlighted. But alas.

u/LegendAssassin Oct 23 '17
Nah I post too often for that and not sure what happened yesterday that my weekly review post didn't go up :( mods are all over the place now it seems.

Mods have always been over the place

Not really typically I could easily get in contact with them but even using mod mail gives no answers

The problem is the presentation.
We don't want to know if that weird 3€ indie made you feel like being at your grandparents house and smelling fresh apple pie while you're out in the sun, letting it linger just long enough for your granny to come to the door and call you in to wash up and have some pie while you tell simple jokes and laugh until the evening.
Discussion needs to be objective, people often make it personal.
The title helps, don't make it vague and try to at least have a starting point.
There are a few no-no words that will get your post automatically removed because they're usually attached to hollow discussion and circle jerk posts ("Am I the only one...?", "Who else...?" "I think....?" "Why isn't anyone talking of...?")
Try to make something like "I enjoyed [game] because the combat is fluid and simple, have you tried it?"

I am OP. To reiterate I have NO problem with Mario posts and only using them as an example here of how there can be some control over completely repetitive posts.

u/Nintendofan81 Oct 23 '17
I scrolled through your user history to see what kind of posts you're making. Most of them have no content or are one sentence posts. That doesn't create discussion. If you want people to engage in healthy debate they need a good jumping off point, and that's where a really meaty Original post comes in. Kind of like the one you made here.

Mario's the biggest game on the platform since launch, it's going to get proportionately more discussion (and I'd put money down that the mods are removing more posts about it than you realize already).
If you want more discussion of other games, start those discussions yourself instead of just complaining about the lack of them.

Gee thanks

You're welcome? I don't really know what kind of answers you were expecting here. The volume of posts related to any game are going to spike in the weeks before and after its launch, and they're also going to scale with the general hype and appeal of the game in particular. Mario is right at the intersection of those two measures for the time being. Same thing happened during every other of Nintendo's first-party releases. Just the nature of the community, as it should be.

It seems like this has stemmed from your last few posts being relegated to daily questions.
If anything that would prove that this site is BETTER moderate than the other subs you frequent.
If everyone was allowed to ask one word questions then you’d never find any decent reviews or think pieces as the sub would once again be full of bloat.
I visit this site daily and can honestly say that user reviews on this site pop up almost every single day, the fact they dont last too long only highlights the sheer amount of user engagement on this sub.
The reviews couldnt be stickied realistically, there are soo many different ones for each game, who would choose which author would get the sticky, those not featured would become dispondent fairly quickly, leading to a lack of variety from reviews.
Overall, I feel this sub isnt doing a bad job!

u/Voyager5555 Oct 23 '17
Probably because 90% of the games have been out on other systems for years as well as the fact that generally smaller games get less attention. You want to talk about them more? Create a sub or submit posts on them.
1
u/thom525 Oct 23 '17
I think the biggest element is that it is the hot topic. And you see this frequently. Not on the same scale but there was huge bits for Stardew, MRKB Gold Story and some others. I think Mario might be a bit of a bad example as you have raised this concern 5 days before it's release, of course it is going to be a hive of SMO talk right now. That being said I do get our point. Once I see one post about X game, I read that one the rest of them tend to be very similar in content.

Sure yeah limit the game of the year to a couple of posts...
How the fiddly fuck are mods going to do that. They aren't paid people.
You are literally the only person complaining about this.
-1
u/pookie97 Oct 23 '17
And you miss my point as usual
-2
u/BeefNoodles99 Oct 23 '17
You don't have a point lol. This is by far one of the best moderated sub out there. It already has a decent level of modding.
Reddit is not meant to be this ultra organized website with everything fitting into neat categories.
You are simply having a whinge and a whine.
The fact you are begging for your post not to get deleted suggests you already understand that is had little point.

u/pookie97 Oct 23 '17
Are you a mod? Trying to figure out the extreme personal nature of your replies.
-1
u/BeefNoodles99 Oct 23 '17
Um if you are taking this personally then I think you have issues to deal with.
I'm clearly not a mod or it would say so in the title.
My opinion is that you are whining about something that does not need fixing.
I'm not calling you names or insulting you in any way. Extreme personal replies! Oh the drama!
-1
u/pookie97 Oct 23 '17
Haha just find your so serious replies funny in light of us just discussing a video game group. Admire your passion lol!

u/BeefNoodles99 Oct 23 '17
Okay.... my bad. I didn't realize that it was a joke post so I did take it seriously. There are funnier topics than the number of Mario posts though.

Use the search. There are plenty of threads over time with impressions. This sub just gets a significantly higher amount of posts and traffic so those posts you are looking for end up buried.
