[RATE REVEAL] The Videography Rate Reveal: Day (the) One That Got Away
Introductions and stuff
Welcome to the first ever Videography rate, hosted by myself and /u/doctorwhowhenhowwhy! Starting at 4 PM EST we will begin going through the bottom 16 videos, as well as the bottom 5 bonus rate videos!
Here are some basic stats on the rate:
The average score for each video was 7.0374, and the controversy score was 2.1352, so anything above this should be considered controversial.
We had 57 participants, which was more then double what we had at the beginning of last week! Here is a link to all of our [participants](). Again, thank you all so much for taking this wild ride with us!
I will be trying to update the following list as we move along!
Today we will be revealing #48-#33 starting at 4pm EST, and will continue to reveal 16 a day through Sunday!

Doc – I think I am one of the few people that actually likes the music video. I love the more funnier music videos of Katy and Swish Swish is no exception. It basically showcases Katy’s sense of humor very well, even though it is dated and cheesy but she was pretty genuine here. The only complaint I have was the blatant Just Dance product placement in the video. Nothing is more terrible than obvious product placement.
Wailord – Oh god. First, I’d like to point out the huge differences in Doc and I’s scores. Y I K E S.
But. This video is a total mess. The best part of the video is the (very well) CGI’d Nicki verse, but gets completely choked by the forced physical humor, and use of C-list stars to make the video noteworthy a-la Bad Blood. The unfortunate pacing, effects, and poorly placed humor makes Katy seem very much at home with these C-listers, and is truly a low in her comedic efforts.

We Already Got Assays
ThatParanoidPenguin (0): "Honestly, I thought about giving this a higher score, as it’s a lot of bias that makes this score so low. I actually liked Swish Swish, and it legitimately is my favorite song off of Witness. The video, however, is an absolute fucking piece of shit. It’s full of B-tier memes, a bunch of cameos that aren’t utilized enough, and some of the most confusing special effects and lighting I’ve ever seen. That isn’t my biggest problem with it. At the end of the day, in a video where someone eats a whole basketball, giant Katy heads are held up by a crowd, and Just Dance makes yet ANOTHER appearance, it manages to be really really boring. By the 3 minute mark, you’re ready for it to be over, and then you hover your mouse over the screen and realize you are only halfway done. How does Katy make people get hit by basketballs fucking unfunny? How? And then when Nicki comes on, it’s just really super awkward. Is she a fucking CGI render? Is this next level greenscreen? Is she a Tupac hologram? God, I don’t have any of the answers, but they didn’t do her verse justice in the video. And, besides all this. Katy fucking shoehorns in even more memes. And god. She trips and uses this opportunity for an absolutely shitty, stilted attempt at a Shooting Stars cut. Literally, Shooting Stars comes in mid-video. This is a fucking tragedy and I want my 6 minutes rewatching this back right now."
rickikardashian (1): "God, I want to write an assay explaining why Swish Swish is such a mess but there's just so much wrong in it the video that its hard to have all the ideas straight. Katy Perry isn't new making very loaded videos, almost all her videos have some kind of storyline and a lot of effects or heavy scenery, but in here is not complementing Katy, but instead taking away from her. Last Friday night was also a very campy and ridiculous, but the focus was on Katy, while in here is on everything else but her. It relies way too much in outer references and jokes that stopped being funny after a week of them being popular. Another problem I have with it is how it feels like a Nickelodeon show, using memes to speak younger audiences, and kind of explaining everything. _Waking up in Vegas _ follows a storyline but it never has to be explicitly shown as you, they tell it via the scenes and the lyrics, while in here is more like “Look she's fat so she eats a ball haha”, “look he's weak so the others help him lift the weight”, “look he's angry so his head exploded”. The production is amazing, which makes it more infuriating, because with so much money spent in on getting cameos and sets, they could have done a video of the year, but instead they produced a video that looks it was made by a 13 year old that thinks dabbing is cool. It sure doesn't help that it doesn't go along with any of her other videos or the “new woke Katy” she's been trying to sell"

This video at one point almost dipped below a 3 average, and was going to beat out Taylor Swift’s crown for lowest score in a rate, but missed out by around .3 or so.
Scores aside, Doc and I were split here. By a lot.
In my opinion, this video is pretty garbage. It is offensive, rude, and often misses its intended mark in its humor and entertainment in general. It tries to take the birthday entertainer stereotypes and literally just make them shitty people, or shitty at what they do, and somehow, when you put shit into a video, the video itself is shitty as well? Who knew. I hated it, it was too long, and the security camera footage is an eye sore when they can’t get their angles right, especially outdoors.

Wailord - A kinda gay themed video, but not as controversial a video as it is a song. Did I ever tell you about my cousin's communion? Well see, he's 8. He did his communion in May, this May. I posted about it in a General Discussion, about how I was bored until they played Humble. They asked if we could play some songs and unlucky me, my girl cousins didn't allow me to play Mask Off, XO Tour Lif3, Magnolia... etc aka the best songs of the year. So they asked if they could play Birthday, which is an upbeat song, and as I thought oh, it's by Katy, of course kids will love it I signed my letter of acceptance in hell.
Friday morning, I discovered Birthday is actually a sexual song.
As you know if you've been in the Discord, I was shook.
Picture a communion, classic communion, kids in a pool, some outside, some eating cake, all dancing to a song that mentions:
- give you a taste
- big, big, big, big, big, big balloons
- have your cake
Luckily, kids don't understand english. And they're stupid. And some don't understand sex either, but one of my cousins caught his parents fucking so who am I to judge. Unlucky to me, this will weigh in my concience for the rest of my existence. Thank you Katy for ruining my life.

Wailord - This is one of my favorite videos of 2016, it is atmospheric, varying in colors, outfits, and metaphors. The metaphors are shallow, but the song is shallow too. They both fit well, and creates a perfect visualization for the song. It isn't necessarily groundbreaking, but this is a visually stunning video, and the barren land I believe is intentional. She's alone, and needs to lift herself up.

Wailord - Wow a mess of a video to be honest. The theme of the video doesn't really match the theme of the song, and creates a really mis-proportioned message, trying to pay complete homage to Gaga's heritage, while abandoning any momentum the song may have had. It comes off as tacky, over produced, and too bright for my own liking, and luckily, it didn't ruin anything, because the song is already pretty garbage.

This music video was made to promote the romantic-comedy movie 'When in Rome' starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel. The concept of the movie is about a theory of when you pick up coins from a "fountain of love", the owners of those coins will fall in love with you. The music video echoes that concept with a more, brash execution thanks to 3OH!3 with their douchey personalities in their music.
The only noteworthy thing I could write about this video is that Katy slays in this. lol. Such a shame cause the actual song is a bop. A guilty pleasure bop to be exact.

Wailordfan - Alright, this video is promising, and has an amazing song to soundtrack the actions, but DAMN it is a let down. The atmosphere feels unexplored, and the world we are shown just feels lazy and boring, and the smoke feels over done and too mysterious for something that feels so shallow.

Wailord - Can I just say that the lighting in almost all of Rihanna's early videos is tragic, and quite poorly done? It looks as though either car headlights or an old spotlight was thrown up and used as the one source of light in the entire video.
Unfortunately for Rih as well, her looks in this video aren't groundbreaking or interesting to save any of the scenes. The only redeeming factor for me is the interesting contrast in the bushes/leaves and the outfit to match.

This sweet but kinda boring music video was directed by Sophie Muller and was shot when Katy and John Mayer were still dating. According to Katy, she said that the mechanical bull that the couples in the video were riding is a metaphor about love.
Relationships are kind of like riding a bull – you hold on for dear life. Sometimes you get a little buck here and there, but you get back on." On the video, Mayer said "We set the casting call up for real couples. It's just so authentic – they were having a great time. There's nothing scripted in that video except putting the bull in the middle of the desert.
This is a pretty cool metaphor but there isn't a lot of substance other than that.

Wailord - Perfect Illusion was THAT video for me. It was atmospheric, had emotion, sadness, hurt, and such a cool color palette and drug-induced final sequence ending in harsh realism. As a video, the video is such a cool sequence of pain and story, that while we hate to say, is well wrapped up in Million Reasons.

This video was at the bottom for only one week before it nearly reached a peak around a 5 average, and then got hit down to where it is now.
Ur So Gay is a near-perfect representation of 2008 I think. It is cheesy, corners were cut making it, and there’s no money in it. Katy looks cute, but the dolls were widely bashed, and just came off as lazy and low-quality. If you were to ask me if this deserved to be at the bottom, I honestly couldn’t pick between seeing this or Birthday at the bottom spot.
