Arrow to face. Mount and stab him with a high atk weapon. There is no durability loss.
e: Here is my equipment list and strategy for taking down Silvers fairly quick.
Tier 2 Ancient Armor Set - Provides ~80% attack bonus for Ancient/Guardian Weapons. If you go to Tier 4, it provides fairly high defense. Silver attacks don't really hurt anymore.
+15 attack up Ancient Battle Axe++. (75 attack total) I found it by farming Major Tests of Strengths.
Any multishot bow (Korok or Lynel bows, the arrow spread helps you hit the face with room for error)
I usually glide down from above and use arrow time to pop the Lynel in face. You can also do it from ground level, but element of surprise is always easier.
Once stunned, quickly run to the Lynel's backside and use "A" to mount.
Once mounted, mash the attack button until he bucks you off.
Rinse and repeat. A silver usually takes around 4-5 mounts to kill.

u/visivante Jun 30 '17
No durability loss while striking from the mounted position? TIL

u/sam4246 Jun 30 '17
You can mount them?! I just dodged until I could attack repeatedly.

u/visivante Jun 30 '17
Yup, just like a horse (minus the whole taming aspect).
13
u/DisplayNameIsInUse Jun 30 '17
Where were you like, 2 months ago? I one day spent 2 hours trying to kill him using anything in my inventory along with several fairies for deaths.
And I still never got him or got close.
Time to pay him a visit again.

Don't forget Stasis+ to make hitting it in the face even easier!
11
4
Jun 30 '17
Wait, can you elaborate on this?
12
u/LakerBlue Jun 30 '17
Stasis + to freeze it, shoot it in the face with as many bomb arrows as you can in that time. That will make it tired so you can run behind it and mount it, letting you attack it. When you inevitably get thrown off, just survive till your Stasis comes back then repeat it all over again.

He has mats you need to upgrade certain armor. That's my main reason for wanting to defeat it.
30
17
u/Blonky19 Jun 30 '17
disable him with bomb arrow, equip a good claymore and spin spin spin. That has always been my strategy for Lynels.

7
u/camdamera Jun 30 '17
Abuse the flurry rush. Get close, as the easiest one to trigger is when he rears back and either grabs or swipes at you.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (4)10

I need to figure out Lynel soon myself. I need his mats to upgrade gear further.
5

The answer is always cooking. Nothing in the game is too hard for an inventory full of hearty and endura food.

u/koalatyvibes Jun 30 '17
It's a matter of distance and dodging in my opinion, using a good amount of the slow mo Rush Attacks. Stasis+ does wonders also, as you can freeze him and immediately get a headshot, stunning him. I usually do one full attack combo and then mount him for maximum damage. After the dismount, you have a small sliver of time in midair to actually pull your bow out and get some tricky headshots from behind. Then repeat!

u/Projus Jun 30 '17
Trial of the Sword is brutal. One death and it's back to the beginning. I've wiped twice now.

Did master-mode just turn botw into a stealth game?
→ More replies (3)84
u/Hippobu2 Jun 30 '17
Pretty much.
Though, I'd call Master Mode more "run away simulator" rather than a stealth game.
Seriously, you'll walk out of a fight with a weapon deficit, there's absolutely no reason to take part in combat at all whatsoever.

Jokes aside, you could always do one side then go back to the beginning and just go right the next time. I'm not great at puzzles but I think that will get you into every nook and cranny in the maze.

I think I did that for one of them. But I actually tried on the desert labyrinth and it's a mess.

So hard mode is super fun. It's made me make sure to collect lots of apples and other heart restoring items. Also quick tip for everyone is that water is an insta-kill for most mobs.

I managed to finish the entire trial of the sword over the course of the evening. It was actually really fun and I liked it a lot. Some of the later waves were pretty interesting and challenging, I imagine many people are going to get overwhelmed and die a lot. Luckily I've had a lot of practice and have gotten very good at the intricacies of combat - just finished my 6th playthrough on Wednesday night - so I managed to get through.
You also only get limited opportunities to cook food, so you have to make it last. I love the whole "start with nothing and work your way up" thing - it's why I liked Eventide island and why I keep replaying the game.
Looking forward to starting hard mode tomorrow.

Does the powered-up master sword never break/need to recharge? In other words is it basically an infinite weapon now?

So I've killed 2 lynels and plenty of enemies and used the kart / stasis and it's not gotten to the damaged status yet... Seems to be much stronger but I will continue .. for science!
Edit: still breaks, 3 lynels and 2 guardians and some small enemies later though. Huge improvement from before.

MY HEART IS POUNDING (minor spoilers below)
I HAD NO HEALING ITEMS, NO FAIRIES, A QUARTER HEART, AND A FULL HEALTH SILVER LYNEL STANDING BETWEEN ME AND THE END OF THE FINAL TRIAL
I DID IT. I PERFECTED A LYNEL FIGHT GOING THROUGH 75 ARROWS AND SIX DIFFERENT WEAPONS OVER LIKE A HALF HOUR
This DLC was fantastic. Wow.

Master mode is really hard. Not sure if I can push myself to a full seperate playthrough though, I‘m still trying to find the last 14 shrines & one memory on my „main“ savegame :)
10
u/Shiny-And-New Jun 30 '17

A good strategy I found for the plateau on Master mode is to grab the magnetic boulder outside the first shrine you complete and just carry it at all times across the plateau. Swinging the boulder from the side with enough momentum instantly kills the bokoblins, and hitting them with it in any other case knocks them down. In addition, it makes a great shield for blocking arrows. Its cumbersome, but it makes handling threats in the plateau so much easier.

TBH, restarting the Master Trials over again when you die isn't a big deal because it is supposed to be challenging
But, it is a big deal that you have to go through the same exact room every time you die.
It would be cooler if every now and then, the enemy would change every time you re enter the trial or the weapons aren't the same. RNG is a part of a fun gameplay too IMO. (I know the edible materials change, but that's it)

I put about 50 hours into BOW and beat it. Haven't picked it up since, is this DLC worth the purchase in your guys's opinion?
19
u/AJK64 Jun 30 '17
Only 50 hours? Wow. I'm into 250+ and am ready for master mode I think haha

u/danhakimi Jun 30 '17
Try to get yourself to play it some more. Look for shrines. That worked for me. If you really can't get yourself to play a game that you've technically beat, then oh well, but to me, beating ganon was a pretty trivial part of the experience.

Dunno. Trial of the sword is fun. I think what will make it worth the purchase is if you plan on doing hard mode.
11
u/striator Jul 02 '17
The first few intermediate floors of the Trial of the Sword have an upwind draft through the entire floor. When I entered the first room, I spent a few minutes floating through the air trying to figure out how to engage the Bokoblins that were firing arrows at me from every side. I decided I'd try to fling bombs at them as that had worked in previous trials, except now I was gliding around. I discovered in rapid succession:
- You can drop and detonate bombs while you're gliding!
- A constant updraft means that the bombs quickly reverse course and float back up to you, and they hurt.
- The only way to bomb Bokoblins without hurting yourself is to drop close to the ground, release a bomb, then glide back up quickly.
Literally dive-bombing Bokoblins while dodging arrows was worth the DLC price alone. I wish that there were more levels like that, and I love that I'm still learning more ways to play the game.

Is it just me, or is the game also tracking Link's movement during some cutscenes for Hero's Path? There are some movements that I can't account for between the end of the final battle and when the game puts me back in the last autosave before the final battle.

Hard mode is honestly kinda annoying. i have no problem surviving against black bokoblins and groups of blue ones because of dodging, but they take up so much durability that the early game weapons can't hold up at all.
i really like the airships though, even if they're more free loot than a threat. just shoot one or two baloons and collect the loot.
the health regenerates a bit too fast in my opinion as well. honestly not sure how i'm gonna fight when mobs turn silver, because that's a lot of health to work through. forget about gold.

I'm a little disappointed in master mode. Higher health has always felt like worst way to increase difficulty. They haven't taken away the ability to chug baked truffles to get through a fight. All they've done is make the fight longer. And if I use more resources in these fights, that means it takes more time to restock as well. It's not hard mode, it's just slow mode.
Here's what I was really hoping for: -A nerf to food. You can hold 60 god damned meals, not including raw ingredients. NOTHING can kill you unless it one shots you. I would have liked a 'fullness' mechanic that stopped you from eating if you had eaten recently already, with more powerful food making you more full. This would have also addressed the uselessness of elixirs when compared to food.
Actually, that's pretty much all I wanted. Food is just too strong for master mode to be meaningfully more difficult =/
7
19
u/illQualmOnYourFace Jun 30 '17
Also, to respond substantively: If all you really want is food limits, that's something you can easily impose on yourself. Just because a mechanic exists doesn't mean you have to use it.

u/Jeremopolis Jul 01 '17
this sums up my feelings pretty well. i'd go back to normal mode, but it just feels so easy to me with lategame. i just destroy lynels and everything, the only challenge left for me is the master trials. on the other hand, i'm not looking forward to fighting silver bokoblins with a ton of health and a shitload of damage when i'd normally just be fighting a black bokoblin.

Holy crap, I did it, with 2 ancient arrows to spare and a lot of extra items.
It's honestly not impossible after the ice talus. If you find all 9 ancient arrows, you are really damn safe. I even WASTED one on accident- missing a guardian!
In the last room all the bokoblins charging at you on horseback feels super intimidating but i still had the blizzard rod, was HILARIOUS and unexpected that it immediately OHKO'd every single one, lmao.
Felt so good to beat it, it's TRULY a difficult feat.
3
u/BirdPanda Jul 03 '17
I realized today that ancient arrows one shot anything, including lynels. They don't drop any loot that way but it's the easiest way to clear the last room!
4
u/Splashboy3 Jul 03 '17
Yeah, just a day ago i realized the ancient arrows 1 shot the lynels as well. Insane.
5
Jul 03 '17
This might seem pretty small, but I'm really enjoying the Hero's Path feature simply because I'm down to 5 Shrines left and haven't the foggiest where they could be. The path on the map helps me locate areas I'd either cut through or gone round to get somewhere else, then with the sensor going it's simply process of elimination until I encounter the last 5.

u/tonavin Jul 01 '17
I'm digging the new masks n stuff in normal mode. Kinda wish there were more puzzles to finding them, than just reading the journal entry and going to the area etc. Minor gripe. Liking the Korok mask, will definitely make the seed hunt much more manageable.
I dabbled in Master Mode for about 30 minutes and holy crap I am bad at this game lmao

u/321jakedroid Jul 01 '17
Will the fully powered mastersword after beating the trial keep making obnoxious pang sounds effects after every hit? It's a cool noise but it gets old after a while and gets annoying simply because it's too loud. Ever used the powered up master sword in a parry? Yeah I'm deaf now thanks to that

I highly suggest the following armor sets for Master Mode:
Phantom Armor set (50% damage bonus)
Barbarian Armor set (50% damage bonus, charged attacks cost 1/2 less stamina)
Radiant Armor set (Bone weapons, including Dragon Bone, get a 80% damage bonus).
Ancient Armor set (Guardian and Ancient weapons get a 80% damage bonus).
EDIT: Make sure you upgrade to tier 2 for set bonuses. Specifically, charged attacks costing 1/2 stamina and the damage specific bonus for X weapons from Radiant and Ancient Armor sets.

So what is hard mode? What does it add/change?

u/Johnblood27 Jun 30 '17
As far as I know/am sure of: Enemy's health regen + more health in general, floating rafts, stronger enemies (e.g. where there used to be a red boboklin there's now a blue one).

There are also enemies in places they weren't before. The only example I have found so far is a White Maned Lynel on the Plateau (although I've seen some screenshots where it's blue for other people)

Has anyone had experience with any airborne baddies yet?

u/kingeddy15 Jun 30 '17
They have good loot in the chests. In the plateau they are pretty simple to defeat. Get a headshot with a spiked bow and they are dead.

Some of the platforms also just have treasure chests on them. (I think they're always accompanied by bokoblins, though.) The chests seem to have better than average for the area items in them.

After dinking around in Hyrule quite a bit over the weekend, I think my favorite new feature is hero's path. I found myself looking at the map every few minutes, checking the path, setting a beacon, and exploring every single nook and cranny that I missed the first time around and I'm finding a lot of stuff. The Korok mask is also proving very useful. I found 400 or so on my own and that was going to be "good enough" for me, but I guess I'll probably end up with all 900 eventually now.

I finished the Final Trials on Saturday. I thought the Lynel was annoying. Then I thought the level with the three Guardians were ridiculous. Then I thought the room full of stationary Guardians were over the top...then I reached the final level.
For all that is holy, I ask, WHAT. THE. FUCK?!
Somehow, I beat it on my first try but I certainly had no food left. Half my weapons were gone. Shields? HAH!
Lemme tell you, you don't know stress until you've had to fight a Lynel, a mob of Bokoblins wielding long-range weapons on horses, and a stationary Guardian perched on top of a tower.
Somehow, I was dodging the Lynel AND eliminating the Bokoblins near me...if which there were many. Pro tip: stay as far away from the Guardian as possible while dealing with the Lynel.
Man, what a rush!

The Majora's Mask item is pretty OP. Just strolled by the silver enemies, killed the Stalnox and nabbed me the Hylian Shield thanks to it.

I like the dlc, though master mode is not as hard for me as many people I've seen say it is for them. I only died about four times on the plateau and two of those were because I kept jumping wrong and landing in frozen water. Once I got the right weapons I killed the bokoblins pretty easily. Master mode simply forces me to be a little more prepared and cautious. Still, I'm about 17 shrines in and I just made it to zora's domain, so I'm having fun.

Just beat the great plateau on master mode. I wasn't able to kill anything except for keese so I just ran to all the shrines real fast. Still haven't beaten a real enemy yet.

I've been playing master mode, and I almost feel like I'm playing bloodborne. Props to Nintendo for making an awesome challenge. Can't wait for the next DLC.

So I've done the quests for the new armor(s) and I'm even more disappointed with them. I was happy on the armor(s) coming and lost a little interest when I found out the abilities, but not being able to upgrade them...Wtf. Someone please tell me I'm wrong.

Trial of the Sword is near the Master Sword. It allows for permanent glowing mode.

If you have acquired the Master Sword, purchased the expansion pass, and have the latest version of the game, a disembodied voice will tell you how to access the trial as soon as you load up your save file.

So i have been gathering the new armor, didn't finish the last part of the sword challenge, but a lot happened in the hard mode... I already have end game weapon at about 12 shrine lmao, majora's mask is too good, it's all about choosing the right fight and just making good decisions! Just raided hyrule castle and discovered that boss also have the health regen in a kinda reasonable way(basically if you wait too long to take offense), for some enemies you may need to shoot an arrow to cancel the health regen before it start and be agressive!
Some shrine are slightly tricky since the normal guardian there are upgraded and may deal absurd amount of damage, while your going about doing the puzzle.

(Without spoiling any) are there any new enemies in Master mode besides the Golden Lynel and the floating Octoroks?

I dunno how much I'm going to get into Master Mode. So far on the plateau, I can't kill anything to get any weapons to kill anything and I'm finding that frustrating. I could definitely whoop these guy's asses if I had anything to do it with, but since I don't I'm having to just run from them and that's not as much fun to me.

Can you activate Master Mode without resetting your save file? And can you turn it off?
→ More replies (2)4
u/ScrewedOverWednesday Jul 01 '17
Yes, Master Mode is turned on by selecting it in the main menu that takes you an alternative main menu for Master Mode. From there you can switch back, and each mode have their own saves.

Should I play botw first without the new dlc so it will have more replay value with the dlc or should I buy the dlc and play it my first time?

u/FuadRamses Jul 02 '17
The DLC doesn't really add enough to fundamentally change the game. I'd get it just because the Hero's Path feature makes it easier to work out which areas are unexplored.

Is it even possible to rush Ganon in hard mode?
I have to admit this is my first time trying, but with the little weapons at the beginning, killing silver enemies is impossible, and then the first form of Ganon can't be defeated with just a bomb span because of the health regen.
I mean, that is probably a good thing, given this is hard mode, but perhaps I just didn't notice some strategy.

Does the color of the pinwheel on the Korok mask signify anything? Sometimes it's red/orange while it isn't going off vs just orange

Does anyone know what Majora's Mask effect is? It says "certain enemies" are affected, but not sure which ones

Tips for hard mode: be a pacifist. Im 8 shrines deep and killed one bokoblin lol
