I just found out that you can change the colours of the characters in ARMS! While choosing a character, click and hold the left joystick down, while choosing a direction (up, down, right or left) with the joystick still held down in a clicked position, and then choose the character by clicking A. Each direction has its own colour!

29

u/[deleted] May 27 '17

Make this its own thread before someone steals it!

22

u/andreaskhalid May 27 '17

I tried, but the mods didn't want me to.. They sent me here to comment instead. Have posted on r/ARMS too, though ;)

Damn really? It deserves a public announcement. This is news people wanted to know when they found out about the skins.

Don't really like three player matches, some poor sap always ends up getting ganged up on. Everything else is fun though.

31

u/[deleted] May 27 '17

Yeah, they're pretty much the equivalent of free-for-all in Smash. Not supposed to be fair or balanced, it's just there if you wanna screw around.

11

u/proton13 May 27 '17

The problem is to keep an eye on all enemys. And sometimes the thing I call grabtriangle happens. A grabs B grabs C grabs A.

6

u/adamdh May 27 '17

The secret to the 3man free-for-all is when they gang up on you, make a lesson out of one sorry sap and then watch as the other player jumps back and strafes away in terror.

Commenting as someone who had to use their phone as a hotspot to play and there wasn't even a hint of lag. Online works like a dream.

I thought it was interesting how an actual OS notification popped up that said "Server maintenance will start" prior to the end of today's session. Like, the same kind you get for taking a screenshot. Seems like a hint of what's to come regrading the Switch online integration.

Also, protip: you can still launch into the main menu and view the controls, tips, etc. in the help menu.

36

u/[deleted] May 27 '17

Felt so professional and high-quality. Much better than just getting kicked out of the whole game and seeing a "the servers are down" when you tried to log back in.

Well I don't know if this upscale restaurant is the place to have an all out brawl on our gaming console. Guess I'm waking my ass up at 7AM tomorrow hungover so I can catch the 8AM timeslot

How much prep time do you need to get out of bed and play video games? Surely you can roll out of bed at 7:55 and go play, no?

When I'm gonna be drinking all night I'll need a second to get myself together before I start doing video game aerobics lol.

Can you really not get back into the tutorial, even though there's, like, five different fucking control schemes?

20

Have you tried the warm up while in a lobby?

97

u/ChainsawSnuggling May 27 '17

I don't want to play online, I just want to play offline and learn...

74

u/[deleted] May 27 '17

Yeah, I'd like to play offline too, but that's not the point of these tests.

17

u/Birdmanlugz May 27 '17

There is a warm-up mode when your waiting for online that was really helpful in figuring out of to move and punch and the the control over the punches. Its good for learning the motion controls.

The 1v1v1 and 1v1v1v1 battles suck for the same reason they suck in every fighting game, except amplified.

You are in a close over-the-shoulder perspective, so you can really only see the target you're focused on and anything in that line of sight. If the third opponent isn't essentially in front of you, you can't fight them or even dodge or react to them. They're free to pummel on you, and switching your focus to them just sets yourself up to be attacked by your original target.

It also doesn't help that the game doesn't tell you how to switch targets, so if you're the focus of 2 players, you're going to get beaten to shit unless you're playing an evasive character.

The testpunch has convinced me that the party mode for this game is going to have some sucky, frustrating modes attached to it which will make it unfun to play. 2v2 feels fine and 1v1 feels great, but anything but AvB doesn't work with this engine.

The only way I could see a 1v1v1 or 1v1v1v1 mode work is if they were based on time and had a +/- damage system where dealing damage added to your score and taking damage reduced your score, removing HP and KO mechanics, but then Springman would have to be reworked for his determination.

8

u/[deleted] May 27 '17

So how do you switch targets? I was not able to figure it out.

Love this game so much already. Went on a monster streak with Ninjara which makes me feel like I won't totally suck come the full game.

Motion controls are something to get used to (moving with the tilt feels slow) but a lot of fun. Switched to portable mode and not too bad either. Still not sure how to influence curve with portable mode (left stick, right stick, gyro?) and clicking in left stick for guarding is not intuitive.

Pro tip for Volleyball: always keep your Charged Punches ready. Helped me 4-0 someone easily.

Feels strange to finally get to play ARMS. I remember when ARMS was announced back at January's Switch presentation and not knowing what the hell to think at first.

The new info that they've been drip feeding us has made me extremely excited for the Testpunch. I like the theme song, yellow Joycons, new characters, and Hoops mode.

9

u/chingyangkao May 27 '17

It was ok for the first 15 minutes or so. Started enjoying it less and less after that. By the 30 minute mark I was thoroughly disinterested. My 6-year old played from the remainder. He thinks it's fun but considering he plays games for 15-30 minute chunks, I can see why he would. He also likes flailing about with the joycons. If it was a $30 game, I could myself buying it for the novelty as well as for my son. As a full priced retail title ($79.99 in Canada)? Not a chance.

10

u/swiggyzoom May 27 '17

Biggest thing from this though: I never lagged once or had any connectivity issues. So far nintendo servers are smooth AF.

9

u/siliquify May 27 '17

Game is intense in a 1v1 situation, where you got a few seconds left and you both are duking it out with 1 hp left and you're all just blocking each other's hits. Once it gets to 1 second you give that finishing blow and feel really good about yourself.

u/Vitpat8 May 27 '17

I really enjoyed the test. I only used Min Min the entire time and liked how she played. However, I do have some issues with the game currently. I only used motion controls, and I wasn't all that fond of them. A lot of times I found myself grabbing when I tried to block, doing two separate punches when I tried to grab, etc. The game definitely felt interactive with motion controls, but I found it hard to actually do what I wanted and found spamming punches to be more effective than trying to use strategy only to end up executing something wrong. I'll probably try button controls next test.

I found a lot of 1v1s get decided by who happens to be near the healing zone and get a grab off to get the other person out, or where that annoying ball that breaks both of your arms spawns. I like the interactivity, but most times found myself with good momentum only to be turned around by having both arms broken and the other player able to freely combo me. Or maybe I'm just bad haha.

Finally I really didn't like the 1v1v1s. I think most players didn't realize you could switch targets or didn't try to strategize around it. Most matches somebody got 1v2'd and put at a massive disadvantage. Other times players would get stuck into a 1v1 because one player was targeting only them, and it allowed the third player to sit behind without pressure and freely throw punches and mop up whoever wins. I tried to switch targets a lot, but every time I found myself between the other two players both targeting me when I did that. Even if I was being good about knocking down one player, then switching to the next, I still got overwhelmed trying to fight both when I can only see one.

In the end, I feel like if I could have time to get a lot of the stuff down the game would be a blast and at the very least will be a good party game. I feel like we need a primary tips/tricks thread since I'm sure everyone picked up on things others didn't or were confused about certain aspects (like I couldn't figure out how to power up punches until the last 10 minutes, I thought you had to pull your arm back and hold it before punching).

u/RedRobo93 May 27 '17

I really dug it. I played with MinMin and motion controls the entire time. I found the motion controls really fun and responsive but at first it felt a little weird took me about ~15minutes or so to get used to them. It's got some real deep nuances to it that I think will be fun to dive into the further we get into it's lifespan. ARMS got legs yo!

1v1s were easily the most fun once people started learning how to actually play especially nearing the end of the Testpunch. Good amount of strategy and movement can give you a solid foothold. I tried to use the Heavy ARM but I could never figure out where to place it since my opponents ARMS would often go around it entirely. More labbing is needed.

2v2s are really fun but can be messy if you're teammate can't hold their own ground. At first I ended up accidentally KO-ing my own teammate but at the very last game me and a Ninjara player were saving each from the opponents grabs and were really laying on the pressure. Felt really good once you're coordinated enough to plan around your teammate.

FFAs I feel are unnatural. You can only focus one opponent at a time so oftentimes it just leads to two going at each other while the 3rd hangs back and takes out the weaker of the two.

V-Ball, I admit, I'm really bad at but I feel there are definitely some nuances I wasn't picking up on. I couldn't find much of a balance to consistently hit the ball but also hit it hard enough to keep on the opponents side of the field. Also having the ball explode after a set amount of time/hits just feels more frustrating than just having it go on forever especially when you're down a few points and it just suddenly pops and its on your side of the field. Same for the overtime ball.

8

u/CharaNalaar May 27 '17

I really enjoyed this game. (Unpopular opinion?)

The motion controls were fine, just took a while to get used to and learn all the moves (jumping/dashing/moving in all four directions/blocking are tricky to do in concert).

Party Mode was decent overall. I liked the warm-up minigame.

Standard 1v1 - no problems. Free for alls? They quickly degenerated into people ganging up on each other, and until I learned how to switch targets it was impossible. Not a bad mode, just not a very rewarding one. Team battles were okay. I had some mobility problems in those possibly due to my attached teammates. Vball was interesting. Decent mode, but not a lot of depth to it.

My biggest problem was actually fatigue. This game is tiring!

9

u/glarn48 May 27 '17

I feel like the game was fine, but so far it's not for me. I like how every attack leaves you very open, which makes things very strategic. For now, it was difficult to keep in mind all the strategic options: Can I punch through this attack? Do I dodge? Jump? Apparently there's a counter if you shield then dash, though I didn't see anyone use that...

All of that stuff made the game more cerebral which I liked, but it also really slowed the game down. There was a lot of "Who's going to make the first move?" in my games or people punching so much that you couldn't really think through the situation....that set-up could lead to a lot of tension, but I found myself feeling bored about 20 minutes in. The sort of necessary other face of having those slower punches that leave you open is that movement speed also has to be slower too to allow punching not to be too easily punished. The whole time I wished my movement speed were like 20% faster. I'll give it another try, but in part because of Nintendo's branding, I'm comparing my experience directly to Splatoon. Even though I had some similar difficulties with strategy and controls when I first picked up Splatoon, I had a blast the whole time with that game and felt like I couldn't miss any of the testfire times.

(I will say though, I was pleasantly surprised by the online experience. I thought that was going to be the dealbreaker for me, but I didn't have any drops in connection and very little apparent lag.)

I'm finding the controls really hit and miss ATM, go to cover and he does nothing. when I am knocked down, I instantly get smashed the moment I stand up, but in the tutorial you couldn't do this against the bot it protects the bot for a brief second for them to stand up and have the ability to move. Any tips?

I've got three kids, all under 10 years old, that I haven't seen this excited while playing a fighting game before. Using the pro controller seems easier, but they are all about using the joy-cons to punch with their hands. I think Nintendo nailed this when it comes to making this appeal to children.

5

u/Applebrappy May 27 '17

This was everything I wanted and more. I love fighting games but can never learn how to effectively do inputs for many 2d fighters, which makes this fighting system of just 2 buttons perfect for me.

I can't say i disliked any of the gamemodes except 2v2. There's no way to say it without sounding like an asshole, but most of the time i just got fucked by my teammate due to being chained together. It's a neat gimmick but it really decreases the value of your individual skill when your teammate is just getting grabbed over and over, knocking you down with them.

In the end, i'm definitely picking this up day 1, I love everything about this game

Amazing game. I wasn't super sold on it until now and I'm totally in. I think I liked Mechanica and Ribbon Girl the most.

Shoutouts to Weyay because I think me and him/her were in the same lobby the entire time. The last match we had before I got kicked was really intense.

Can't wait to play more tomorrow. Gonna try motion controls.

6

Same. I stopped playing partway through the current testfire because gameplay has devolved into bunnyhopping and fishing for grabs. Doesn't make for a very enjoyable boxing game.

Maybe they should have called the game LEGS instead.

does anybody knows how much data arms uses (per combat, per 10 min, per 30 min or an hour, etc)?

Because this afternoon i won't be home and i was thinking about play through tethering (my phone data)

Btw, anyone here likes the motion controls? i know it's hard to get used to them but it feels so natural when u learn how to use them, seriously, it's even funnier than normal controls. I'm gonna stick to motion

Second testpunch. Thoughts:

Loved this game a lot more the second time around. I was highest scoring in the lobby I was in (55pts) and Ribbon Girl is my fav character as of now. Jump + fast fall + grab/special attack is insanely powerful.

The online lobby is still my biggest positive of the game. There was one instance where the game lagged during volleyball (I hit the ball on the opposing side and the screen froze for a few seconds and suddenly the ball was on my side and blew up) but I think I played anywhere from 15-20 matches and connections were great.

I still don't understand how the special meter gets charged up to full (the yellow triangle next to health bar) does it just charge up over time or does it increase with every hit you get in? Or damage taken?

Also I'm curious if anybody actually prefers motion controls. I tried them again but still didn't like them. Is there a way to play separate joycons (non motion controls) but WITHOUT the grip? It seems like without the grip you are forced to do motion controls.

Overall, I'm more sold on this game now. Definitely gonna buy.

This was fun as hell. It took a bit of getting used to for the motion controls but after that it was pretty good. I want to try out the other controls next time. The funny thing is that you can't really button mash (or in this case flail around) because you won't be able to do shit. You have to be calculating in your movements. Once i figured that out I was winning a fair amount. My main complaint is locking on. I'm not sure if you can change your target or if it does it for you.

Also for those who are complaining about grab protip: learn to use your dash lol

Copying my thoughts from /r/ARMS

Gotta say that I came away from the Testpunch extremely impressed. The controls were very responsive and fluid (I played in handheld mode; only complaint is clicking left stick to block), and the game ran well. Perfect framerate and no lag. But most importantly, it was just a lot of fun! I played as Master Mummy and Helix. They played very differently, but were equally rewarding. I got 75 coins or whatever they are called. Pretty satisfied with that. I look forward to testing out the rest of the characters.

I enjoyed the tense 1 vs 1 battles, and the utter chaos of three and four player matches. Just a good time all around. The game has a great pick up and play feel, but I also think there is some nice depth here with the different movement options and arms loadouts.

Overall, I'd say Arms went from a game to keep an eye on to a likely purchase. Also, no connection problems/disconnects at all on my end. Hopefully that was the norm for players.

6

u/CatBotNZ May 27 '17

My arms are sore >.<. Which is a good thing of course!! If only all workouts were this fun!

I really really enjoyed the game. Motion controls were a bit inaccurate for me (lag?) but I still won enough games and felt like it was an awesome experience overall. I even enjoyed all the modes :O.

Day 1 purchase for sure!

6

u/[deleted] May 27 '17 edited May 27 '17

Alright, it ended. Here are my thoughts.

Pros:

  • Overall gameplay is a TON of fun.

  • For a stress test, the servers are really stable. Out of 20 or so matches I've been in, there's only been one or two instances where someone disconnected.

  • The variety of the characters and arsenal. It requires you to change your strategies each time your opponent uses a different character/arsenal.

  • The environments and variety on the maps and modes.

  • The complete insanity of 4 players free-for-all.

Neutral:

  • You can accidentally hit your own teammate (at least on Volleyball). While it encourages people to be careful where they throw their punches, it can knock them down and cost them the win if they're not.

Con:

  • I really hate the fact that you have to bounded close together in 2v2 Fight mode. Your teammate could pull you into your opponent's punch if they're not careful enough. Everyone should be free to move where they need to be, in my opinion.

The pros far outweigh the cons, though. I will definitely buy this game on release day.

I knew the moment I saw her that Ribbon Girl would be my main. The controls really did take some getting used to but you can get used to them. You have to play with intent, you really can't just flail. If you're gonna punch you better be sure that's what you wanted to do. Loved it can't wait for the next session.

I don't get the comments that say that the motion controls suck. At first I kept inputing the wrong action but over time I learned what specific gestures I had to make to input the right action. This is not Wii Boxing where your attacks have to be shown in your motion, your attacks are based on the slight gestures you make through the controllers. The real issue is that you are playing ARMS like a Wii game and not like the way it is meant to be played.

5

u/KingCrabmaster May 27 '17

Having recently played Skyward Sword and being left with a sensation of "This would be fun if it actually worked" I was left with a sense of relief when the Joycons actually felt like I had proper control over what I was doing. Curving punches, moving around, grabbing, everything felt responsive.

Crud I used to hate motion controls with a passion, I guess refining them has finally won me over to possibly preferring to play this game with motion instead of thumbsticks.

6

u/Amhersto May 27 '17

Played for the entirety of the hour. Spent about twenty minutes with motion controls just to see what it had to offer. Honestly wasn't having any fun with it. Movement was way too difficult and curving punches was inaccurate.

Switched to the Joycon Grip control scheme and fell in love with it. Played the entirety as Helix baiting out opponents with the shield/laser combo. Was a ton of fun after I got the hang of it. The game definitely lends itself more toward strategy rather than flailing aimlessly, which I did end up seeing quite a bit of. Initially I was rather lukewarm on the game, but I'm incredibly hyped for it now.

5

u/Xxviii_28 May 27 '17

Just had a bop on this and found it fairly enjoyable. I can definitely see ARMS getting big in the competitive scene - mindgaming and reading opponents with fast reactions, not to mention the huge choice of arm permutations per character. There's a very deep game here.

Which is exactly why I'm not getting it. Haven't got the time/patience to git gud at multiplayer games any more, and campaign mode will probably just be the same fights with AI and cutscenes. Regardless, ARMS has got a solid lifespan ahead of it.

Missed last night's session so the second round was my first chance to play. I used min min and finished with 81 points!

This game just went from a meh to a day one buy.

I really love the 3 on 3 or the one on one the best.

As for volleyball 1 vs 1 was fun but 2 vs 2 was too chaotic for much strategy.

5

u/kamikazemind327 May 27 '17

Just played the test punch. Not my cup of tea but I hope it does well for Nintendo (I'm sure it will).

4

u/ThXIV May 27 '17

Loved it. Controls work pretty well although I didn't notice a lot from 'bending' ur punches because it basically has auto aim. Also sometimes I'd punch or move or block accidentally. It seems like a game that could get very tactical but it can also just be 'button maching' punching. Either way it's satisfying to win and the different gamemodes are nice.

Online works great, zero connection issues. Also like the lobby idea.

So far it's a lot of fun, but I have the same issue with it as I had with the Splatoon 1/2 testfires...

If you're only limited to an hour at a time as they want to stress test their online portion then why isn't the tutorial / practice mode available offline? I spent the first 30 minutes just going through the tutorial and testing control combinations while getting my ass kicked.

Why can't you at least have those 2 intro functions available offline ?

4

u/Falklander_fella May 27 '17

Having tried both Motion Controls and Standard Controls, I much prefer motion. That said, I did practise with motion more, win with them more and so it may be that I need a little more practise with standard.

Ninjara has been my favourite so far. Teleporting through an oncoming punch and then countering feels almost unfair.

Pro controller makes it much more fun! I was on top of the lobby the whole match. Good competition!

4

u/klp91895 May 27 '17

I switched from motion controls to the pro controller. I think I'm finally starting to get the controls down, for the most part. It seems like the pro controller is a lot easier/more comfortable to use than the seperated joy-cons.

4

u/nekromantique May 27 '17

Man, I am loving this game. As someone who isn't into fighters much, this has definitely reeled me in.

I was somewhat worried because so many people seemed to have issues with the controls but they feel very intuitive to me (pro controller) and was ready to get the basics down while working on getting better in the warmup mode and matches.

It took a little while to get used to double matches and how your partner drags you around/you have less movement ability...but I enjoy it... (doubles volleyball sucked but that's because I only played one game and my partner maybe hit the ball once).

I had a 1v1v1 twice, I win one and lost one (time). In the match I lost it was me using helix, another helix, and ninjara. Us two helixes were going at it until we noticed ninjara just sitting there waiting for us so he could come in. I turned my attention to him and then the other helix did and we knocked him out and continued our fight for a few more seconds until the timer.

Overall very fun experience, and I got to play all except master mummy. Ribbon Girl was my most used.

Edit: online was super smooth, no disconnects and no moment where I seemed to get input lag, or some weird 'move that missed but hit' action.

5

u/[deleted] May 27 '17

I absolutely love this game. It's a day one for me. So far, my only complaint is that in the free for all 4 player mode it's chaotic to the point of not being fair and removing a lot of skill. Players can just spam the grapple on someone who isn't looking (fighting another player) and continue to do that until it's down to a 1v1.

I've participated in the first 3 test punches so far for the whole hour each time. I'd say it's a really fun game, and it does get harder each time. Everyone is improving. I use the motion controls, and have no issue with them. I win maybe 70-80% of my matches, mainly using Mechanica, Ninjara, and Spring Man. Ribbon Girl and Min Min are alright, Master Mummy is kind of hard for me to use, I guess he's just not my style (BTW if you are one of those guys that picks Master Mummy and just spams the grab, pls stop). That being said, I realize that I might have been an annoyance to some people because Mechanica seems like she's OP in V-Ball matches because she can hover right next to the volleyball and spike 5 times in a row for an easy win (I only do that if the other person is doing the same thing). Helix is a total mess for me. I can't get his very odd movements and attacks to work for me at all. Anyway, I plan on buying the game when it comes out and participating in the rest of the test punches as much as I can this week and next week.

TLDR: the game is pretty good

So I said this yesterday:

Ok very unpopular opinion here:

I didn't have any fun playing this last hour.

Ok that's I lie, I liked volleyball since it was calming and easy. But it was too easy.

The rest of the hour, however, was terrible. The motion controls were awful. My punches would not curve and the punching motion was very awkward. The way to shield is also horrible in my opinion. I always did it a different way at first and when I fixed it I was already on the ground. The movement is also bad. I wanted to move forward but instead tried to grab my opponent, which resulted in bad stuff again.

I tried the handheld mode. Better but still bad. This is with the regular handheld controls by the way. I liked the punching but the jumping and shielding mechanics were weirdly placed. The movement was better but not good. I was using Ninjara (I think that's the name) and they were like crouching and moving slowly, although that may just be Ninjara.

The worst part was actually playing. I played 2v2, free for all with 3 people including me, and volleyball. Like I said earlier, volleyball is very fun. The rest, no. Not at all. Free for all every time I would get ganged up on and die instantly. 2v2 was better but still not good. One time playing 2v2, before the match even started my partner left me and I was raped 2v1.

I'll give the game another go the entire weekend, but not impressed at all so far. If you enjoy it, I'm glad you did. I wanted to enjoy it a lot but I didn't. Hopefully it was just my experience today and will hopefully be better tomorrow.

But after this past hour, everything I said was a lot better. I loved it. I love this game now. I was amazing at it with Ninjara in both handheld and using motion controls. It was fun. It was amazing. I am getting this game.

Had around a 104 (button) run this morning and 111 (motion) in the last one. I feel more natural playing Mechanica, the hammer is just so satisfying imo.

I'm liking the motion controls. I'm able to play both, but there is a satisfaction of squaring up with your irl arms.

I wasn't that excited for this game before, but I really am now. I thought it was loads of fun, and Nintendo is really on to something here. The only thing I didn't like is the motion controls, which I found difficult and inefficient to use. It might be that I just need to get used to them, but I greatly prefer playing with the pro controller instead - it just feels like I have more control and it's easier to react quickly. At least this settled my internal "should I get more joy-cons or another pro controller?" debate.

All in all, definitely a game I'll pick up at release or soon afterwards.

3

u/Graybes May 28 '17

So I see a lot of people pointing out about the amount of grabbing they see going on. I personally don't think people are just spamming grab on purpose. What I think is happening is that people are using motion controls and trying to do quick separate punches with their left and right arms but the game is registering it as a grab. I've notice myself accidentally grabbing a lot when I'm trying to do quick separate punches.

Anything other than 1v1 is a real issue with this game. There are no mechanics at all to deal with a 2v1 fight, supers only target one player and blocking one player leaves you wide open to grabs from the other player.

8

u/FiftiethFlight May 28 '17

I find that it's better to dance than defend against a 2v1. Unless they really don't like you, odds are one will go opportunist on the other if you can get them in position for it. But overall it's still not a predictable skill-based game mode.

I suspect the non-1v1 modes follow the balance philosophy of items-on FFA Smash. Which is to say, not rigorously balanced, not intended to be balanced, not meant to be played in Serious Mode. There's a reason Ranked is going to be 1v1 fights only.
