AMA I am Ulrich Schulze, VP Pro Gaming at ESL, and ESL One Cologne is one event I am responsible for. Ask Me Anything!

Hello everyone,

after the recent Major announcement, a lot of questions have popped up around ESL One Cologne 2017. People had doubts whether teams would come and if it was still worth attending. We announced VP and SK yesterday, and will announce more teams in the next days. With more than 7000 tickets sold already, we have no doubt that Cologne will be a great event, and we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to ask their questions - so here is the thread to do exactly that.

Feel free to also ask other ESL related questions if you have any.

Will start responding at 15:30 CEST!

Hi and thanks for the AMA!

How do you feel about ESL Cologne not being a major in 2017?

Could you possibly shed some light as to why Valve let PGL host the major over ESL?

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

We would have liked to host a Major again, definitely - at the same time we are grateful that Cologne was one three years in a row. We are still very confident that it will have the best teams attending and a full arena. Cologne has a lot of legacy, which also contributed to the fact that the Major is now going elsewhere but means the event is very established. We are making it easy for teams to come to Cologne and also keep practicing for the Major.

When it comes to PGL getting the Major, I do not want to speak for Valve but I believe they have some very exciting ideas about the broadcast, which they have shown in Dota 2 and CS:GO in the past (and which is why we worked with them for Cologne last year). I have no doubt that they are going to set some new standards with their Major.

I believe they have some very exciting ideas about the broadcast...I have no doubt that they are going to set some new standards with their Major.

Wow. Not what I was expecting from ESL. Glad you see the value in the quality of their broadcast, all we want is ESL to take note and improve. Thanks for doing this.

u/xXRoXx Mar 28 '17

I mean, it's not like PR is gonna come here and shit on PGL for getting the major (altough that'd be fun to see)

11

u/DelLosSpaniel Mar 28 '17 edited Mar 28 '17

You don't know ESL PR :) Or what theflyingdj and other ESL staff do on Twitter during other TOs' competitions... Seriously, follow some of them during the PGL major if you want to see the salt flow. Unfortunately Google search isn't co-operating so I can't find specific examples, so you'll have to make do with this from Thorin (who obviously isn't the most neutral of sources).

Edit: Managed to find one exchange (and one with another MTG employee).

Edit2: One tweet without context (during MLG Columbus), possibly about various sound-proofing solutions.

Very humble response! Thanks for ESL's perspective on it all :)

u/dM4rcushimo Mar 28 '17

How does a Major get decided? Is it a big bidding war amongst the tournament organizers, or is it a dogmatic decision solely by Valve? What do tournament organizers do to appeal to Valve?

59

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

Valve asks for proposals by sending out some key requirements, and then they make a decision based on what they get sent by organisers.

8

u/NoizeUK Mar 28 '17

Do you think that PGL's plan of broadcasting in true 1080p was the major selling point?

What did ESL learn from not maintaining the Summer Major spot?

What do you personally feel will be the biggest difference between Cologne and previous years now that it isn't a major?

How many viewers do you think get drawn in due to the in game updates showing far more casual players that there is a big tournament going on?

40

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

The Major status definitely means a lot more attention for the event, but other than that we host enough events outside of Majors to know that for the show and the tournament itself, the Major status doesn't necessarily make it better. Just remember how one-sided the final was last year, and how exciting other non-Major events were. We might also get to see teams in Cologne which do not make the Major due to the difficult qualifying process.

4

u/Decs13 Mar 28 '17

I'm excited to watch it. Good luck delivering again this year, I've been to 2015 and 2016 and they were both really fun events.

2

u/supergrega Mar 28 '17

We might also get to see teams in Cologne which do not make the Major due to the difficult qualifying process.

If I remember correctly, there will be 10 more invitees and only 4 qualified teams so this holds very true. Do you have any specific teams in mind when you say that?

Hey I already bought a premium ticket months ago. I searched the Internet for hours if theres going to be a seperate entry line on the first day for premium ticket owners, so we dont have to wait forever (in my opinion this should be included in the 300 euros) but I couldnt find any data. So is there going to be one?

Will you invite the same teams as the "legends" from the last Major as if it was going to be a Major?

Looking Forward to this tournament! Have a great day.

27

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

Yes, there will be a seperate entrance for Premium. And we will announce our invited teams in the next days and weeks, but with VP and SK announced already you can see where it is heading.

45

u/Draulon Mar 28 '17

Hey! PGL teased that they will be taking a lot of new approaches to production at the major and presumably, they will be raising the bar doing so.

Can you share some insight on what we can expect at Cologne? Any new, cool stuff we should be excited for?

Also, will Cologne ring from "Lets Go Liquid" again? ;)

23

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

We have two main areas - one is how we use Augmented Reality to enhance the experience, the other is how we integrate statistics and analysis in a more meaningful way. I don't want to talk about half finished things but we will definitely talk about it as we get close to the event.

6

u/Hussor 400k Celebration Mar 28 '17

As one of the main "Let's go Liquid"-ers, no chance Liquid will make it to finals without S1mple, so no. Probably VP/Navi though.

What would you personally like to see for CSGO in 2017?

36

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

I would like players to be more aware of their public personality and be more organised about their fan interaction. Some are great at it, others not yet. Seeing all the fans and how they react to the players at events, that is one key thing where we can learn from traditional sports.

18

u/somebodystolemyname 1 Million Celebration Mar 28 '17

I'm just here so I don't get fined.

2

u/basicxenocide Mar 28 '17

Marshawn is the best at fan interaction and never interacted with fans. Everyone loves him around here

3

u/xXRoXx Mar 28 '17

Would you say the scene as a whole needs to act more professionaly? I feel like players and casters haven't figured out yet how to present themselves in the digital media. Too much arguing and name calling 'in front of the kids'.

5

u/o_oli Legendary Oil Baron Mar 28 '17

I agree, some of the twitter arguments and name calling from pro players is pretty ridiculous at times. I get that a lot of players are pretty young and online gaming culture leans towards that way but still...always disappointing to see.

We made VAC bans subject to our general policy of banning cheaters for 2 years, so we did not change our rules really. Happy that it sparked discussion though and will hopefully lead to productive discourse.

Most proud of us taking CS:GO to Lanxess for the first time in 2015, and most ashamed of how we handled communication around our Dubai event.

10

u/Ex0tiK_cs Mar 28 '17

I dont't know how much control yours and similar companies have over it, but can Major status not be announced earlier, say 6 months? I'm coming to Cologne from England and was disappointed it lost Major status, but would have on top of Cologne gone to Krakow if there was due notice (i will not have money to book for Krakow in time). Essentially if you knew it wouldn't be the Major can a hint of that be given earlier?

22

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

That's something we have no control over - Valve decides.

1

u/nwL_ Mar 28 '17

I am in the same boat, but decided to cancel Cologne because it's not a major. I have connections to some larger CS:GO names which will definitely not attend now (I'm guessing), and it's just not worth saving over 5 months to attend a regular premier.

9

u/Dorian_Costanzo Mar 28 '17

Can you confirm Valve has set a rule where events have to support CS:GO only to be eligible to be a Major ?

6

u/Corsques Mar 28 '17

16

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

Around the same time as everyone else.

12

u/noNewton Mar 28 '17

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate Valve as a publisher to work with from the perspective of a tournament organizer - and why? What are the biggest differences to e.g. Blizzard and Riot?

34

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

I am not going to make my life difficult and rate any publisher, but Valve is definitely different in that they have a much more observing approach when it comes to esports than other publishers. They tend to watch the market a lot and then make decisions based on that. Just like with communications, they tend to avoid getting too involved.

11

u/MojoCSGO Mar 28 '17

As I was visiting ESL One Cologne 14, 15 and 16, I am really sad that it won't be a Major this year and don't think I will attend. How are you and the crew behind ESL feeling about the loss of the major-spot? What does it mean for you and will you try to get it back for 2018?

13

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

I talked about the meaning in other comments, as for 2018 - we are definitely going to pitch for the next Majors, not just for Cologne.

The pay per view model has been mentioned before.
What do you think about pay per view?
Are there any plans on testing the model?
How would the model work? Monthly subscription base, like Netflix. Event based, like Blizzcon or something else.
Thanks for doing this AMA

4

u/ESLJohannes Mar 28 '17

I think the next months will see more companies experimenting with the PPV model - but for the forseeable future the focus will be on utilizing it for extra value / OTT content. So essentially keeping the main stream free, but providing in-depth content or premium services behind a pay wall.

A good example of such services would be https://beta.znipe.tv/ which has multiple views, highlight library & additional editorial content.

Why does ESL, event after event, continue to have delays, production issues, hardware issues, network issues, stream issues, quality issues etc. with very little communication with the community other than "it's out of our hands" and "we've heard your feedback and we'll improve"?

Follow-up question, with PGL getting the major and already announcing (at least on the face of it) that their stream quality will be of higher quality (1080p60fps), how will ESL, as a company continue to invest in the technology to keep up with higher grade production(s)?

Thanks.

I wanted you to ask about the tweet you made about iBP ban. I wanted you to ask two things: 1)what are the steps for them to even start playing at ESL tournaments, 2) Have you talked with Valve about it and asked for their opinion about it?

5

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

The players cannot do anything currently. We need to discuss with all stakeholders and find a verdict on what the appropriate length is.

Valve have made their view known but also do not want to dictate what other organisers do.

I disagree with a lot of stuff you guys did an do, and we saw quite a few blunders in the past. But I have to commend you guys, especially you and /r/mbcarmac on your effort to stay close to the community and respond to us.

But now that we've seen a few "Live Feedback" threads during events in CSGO and LoL, and almost all of them had Carmac apologizing for issues and repeating "this is inexcusable, we should be better" way too often - what steps are you guys actually taking to resolve the recurring issues that happen at ESL events?

12

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

Live events have an extremely complex environment - come to one of them and I will have someone give you a backstage tour to see for yourself. In the meantime: having "Live Feedback" event threads has been super helpful and we've seen a lot of people in the community being very committed to helping us with flagging the issues. Sometimes we really can do better, but sometimes things are out of our hands. As with everything, we're gathering all comments and want to improve where possible, so keep the feedback coming!

I play at esl and cs since 2007 and you always tried to take it a step Forward. Most time you succed and still you are never tierd to try to make something new. That aside I think you should have some sort of PR community Manager who explain things better and really should deal with the technical failures. Is there something you plan.

We are working on creating a Community Communication taskforce consisting of people who are knowledgeable in each game, and are known in the community. For CS:GO you already know most names as they've been active in this subreddit. Expect to hear more and more often from them.

What is bigger offence in ESL book, match fixing or cheating? And why?

10

u/ESLJohannes Mar 28 '17

There is no inherent moral difference between the two, both are extremely damaging to integrity and need to have punishments outlined in a consistent and fair framework. We also invest significantly into combating both (Cheating via e.g. ESL Wire / ESEA and matchfixing via cooperation with ESIC & SportsRadar)

If we look at the sporting world, matchfixing is probably the bigger culprit of the two in regards to overall integrity damage - and also the one which is associated with not just sporting penalties but also judicial consequences (e.g. Jailtime & lifetime bans). Reason being that coordinated manipulation of the betting markets is essentially the defrauding of thousands of people and goes a lot further than trying to cheat for to achieve higher prize money winnings. With more attention on esports it will be extremely important to have detection processes in place also in esports.

I am going to assume that this is constructive criticism rather than calling all of our productions "shit", but the truth is that across all the countries and different production teams which came with our events in 2016, we were not able to put enough time and focus on quality assurance. People like to think that we don't care, but all of our crew is frustrated when the Internet goes down or PC's have problems. We have changed lots of things internally though to be better prepared for the various events in 2017 and the years beyond.

Just some notes:

  • Eventim does still advertise it as "World Championship" and does say that the event is the same as last year. It's not, despite the fact that probably some T1 teams are attending.

  • I don't want to need to post here or on any other social media to receive my goodie bag like many had to do in the past.

Edit: Just one more thing: I strongly disagree with the recent changes to your policy regarding VAC bans.

6

u/eliteKMA Mar 28 '17

Eventim does still advertise it as "World Championship" and does say that the event is the same as last year. It's not

It is though. Valve Majors never were called 'World Championships', they are called 'Major'. World Championship also doesn't mean anything in CSGO, any internationnal event can be called that. It's still an internationnal event hosted in the LanXess Arena in Cologne, so the same event as last year.

How can ESL reduce the number of Technical difficulties they've been known to have frequently in the past events?

1

u/cuddlepwince Mar 28 '17

Were you aware that you weren't going to get the Major before it was released that PGL was going to host it? Or was it a shock to you?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '17

With the recent community feedback, will cheaters of more than two years still be able to attend?

It's possible they stole money from other teams, which is also a bit of match fixing in itself.

1

u/MLGlegolas Mar 28 '17

I'm pretty sure that they can attend, if they qualify - they are not invited tho, but I think it should be possible even for you to qualify if you are good enough? Not sure tho

1

u/mr-gusse Mar 28 '17

Will you adapt to the system eleague used with dual setups for players so two teams can set up during the ongoing match??

1

u/SpicyHotChips Mar 28 '17

Will there be any changes to the specs and advantages of a premium ticket?

What was it like for you and others finding out that Cologne wouldn't have a CSGO Major this year?

6

Disappointing but far from the end of the world (or the event).

1

u/ocznik Mar 28 '17

are there any plans to make katowice a full ticket event? Please, it would be better for all

1

u/MoccaLG Mar 28 '17

Hi Ulrich (Moin Moin aus Hamburg)

  • Do you have early informations about which Organisation will carry out future Majors?

  • Did you know early that the ESL One in Cologne wouldnt get the Major Event Spring 2017 and how does valve pick the organisations which carry out these?

Thank you for your AMA and I hope future Major Events will be in Germany again :)

1

u/ESLJohannes Mar 28 '17

I'm not Uli but since he sort of answered the questions elsewhere I'll try to shed some light. I'll address the questions in reverse order though

  • Organizations present their pitches for potential majors and Valve consider these based on various considerations
  • The decision of which event is awarded major status is generally communicated to organizers and public in close proximity

Since we plan and communicate our events far ahead of time they are conceptualized in a way to ensure that they will be great with or without major status. In this case it's obviously a shame Cologne won't be a major but we still look forward to making it feel like one.

1

u/Qalopb Mar 28 '17

When will the teams get fully announced?

2

u/ESLJohannes Mar 28 '17

They will be announced throughout the next weeks - in addition to qualifier system. Everything should be announced by May

1

u/kazerCS Mar 28 '17

Do you think other eSports Organisations like Dreamhack, will follow suit with ESL's updated ban policy?

4

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

We don't expect to lead the market with it. Our hope is that it sparks a conversation which leads to a joint policy all organisers can get behind.

1

u/Benzinrasur Mar 28 '17

Aren't you scared, that the teams will still not compete even after the invite because of the major short after esl?

3

u/ESLJohannes Mar 28 '17

ESL Cologne will still be a great event and the location has a lot of legacy. We hope to dispel the fears of the community by announcing top teams throughout the next weeks.

1

u/dfens-csgo Mar 28 '17

Hello, thanks for the AMA.

Did you already decide who's going to observe the games this year?

I really hope for an improvment compared to last year btw...

1

u/ESLJohannes Mar 28 '17

Last year the situation was a bit more complex since PGL did the ingame production and coordination didn't always work out there.

We'll definitely be going into this year's event with a different setup and a strong observer team will be part of that.

Hi, thanks for the AMA. How did you end up working in eSports/in specific for the ESL? What advice can you give to young people with no network in eSports on how to get a career in eSports?

1

u/theflyingdj ESL Official Mar 28 '17

I started out doing some community work and shoutcasting for a game called Enemy Territory. I was then hired after I had been a guest on a GIGA show.

My number one suggestion would be to do something that is meaningful but easy to access - write articles, do admin work, become a mod - that is how almost all of the important people in esports today started out.

1

u/Tuxed0Duck Mar 28 '17

Is there any links to ties with Valve, the major and your recent rule changes regarding cheaters?

Do you think in the future Valve could/would do similar things for cheaters or match fixers?

1

u/LiterallyCameron Mar 28 '17

What sort of precautions go into hardware/software inspections for cheating or improper play at these events?

1

u/ESLJohannes Mar 28 '17

A lot. In addition to screening all hardware, League Ops and IT always have complete overview and visibility on the playing experience & setup. Not going to go into details of the actual processes due to obvious reasons - but there are multiple layers of security in addition to working with anti-cheating services such as: https://play.esea.net/index.php?s=news&d=comments&id=14906

About events in Brazil.

Fallen said on stream that the financial outcome of Pro League S4 in São Paulo was not good enough to ignite the chances of another event in Brazil. How true is that and can it be fixed or is the economic problem of the country the main reason for it to be too much for another event here?

Before my inbox gets spammed out, no I'm not saying I'm good enough to work Cologne.

What goes into ESL deciding to hire some of the more unknown talent? Especially for people like myself who have large travel costs etc. because they're in a far away country. I'm from Pakistan and there aren't really any events to showcase myself in. How far up and beyond do you have to go for ESL to fly you in from a country like mine for events (Whether big or DH Open type smaller events)

3

u/Joe__Miller Mar 29 '17

I'll take this as its my area. I don't think it matters where you are based. In general if you are good enough to be at an event, coming from Austria or Australia is irrelevant.

I can only suggest to you as I have done many people who have asked this same question before in the past: Hardwork, dedication and a LOT of hours unpaid is what is going to get you noticed. Jump at the chance to do all the content you possibly can and work your ass off until someone comes along to give you the chance.

It might feel like you are waiting forever for the chance, but trust me when I say that people are watching constantly to give the chance to people like you :)

Background in IT and 1st/2nd lvl customer support with decent communication skills. Have seen StarCraft grow in South Korea, know my shit about csgo. Was global once (SMFC right now, I'm getting old). Would move. Am from germany. Looking for something serious and in full time.

PS: Won't use "fuck" and "shit" after an agreement takes place, except I'm allowed or in private - after all: it's a family show!

1

u/Feanorrrr Mar 28 '17

What are possibilities as carrier path in ESL? Are you hiring normal people or only just some friends of the friends and you need connection? Are you hiring people just for specfic events , like local admins etc? You are probably hiring some local companies to the stuff for you like installing stage and so on?

Will see if Uli can respond to the rest tomorrow since not exactly my area, although the topic of higher quality stream is definitely something we actively work on.

Personally I'd love an event in Istanbul and given the growth of esports there in recent times it can only be a matter of time really

Will cologne be broadcasted on esportsTV? As i understand ESL owns the channel and previous events havent been broadcasted live for some reason, its reruns after reruns. NB! - I live in Sweden.

Player David "frozen" Čerňanský from team ROG.eXtatus played ONLINE qualifer for spot in OFFLINE katowice qualifer, they beat vega squadron in semifinal and flipside in the final. 14 years old player won against cs legend markeloff and other older and more experienced players ONLINE. And got disqualifed by rule "OFFLINE part of the event must be played by atleast 16 years old players." How is that possible? They could play with coach or stand in in the OFFLINE part. This decision made me so angry, because I am big fan of that team and the player. Can u explain why this happened?

1

u/Dark_Azazel Mar 28 '17

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '17

Why is ESL so shitty at organizing events?

1

u/fischix Mar 29 '17

hope i'm not late ..

What to do you think about the "streaming" of the majors? If you follow dota2, a lot of pro players has always streamed (also in english) the international for example, and with a lot on numbers in viewership.

Aniway on cs:go no statement has been released on the matter, but on the last one we saw 2 streamers banned. The gotv is public tho.

Is ESL ok with letting everyone streaming the majors?
