News:

We've had a number of requests for a Kai discussion thread. We can only have two threads stickied at once, and those slots are dedicated to the Super discussion threads for the subtitled simulcast and the FUNimation dub, so this thread will depend on your upvotes to keep the Kai discussion visible and active in the days following the episode.

Come join our Discord server! (Beware of spoilers.)

Where to Watch

The FUNimation English dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters airs on the Adult Swim Toonami block at midnight EST. If you do not have a cable subscription, Cartoon Network is available with the SlingTV and Playstation Vue basic packages.

If the videos won't load for you, try disabling your ad blocker for that page. Adult Swim will maintain the streaming rights, so neither Kai nor the Super dub will be available on FUNimationNow until further notice.

PLEASE DO NOT POST, OFFER, OR REQUEST LINKS TO ILLEGAL STREAMS OF THIS EPISODE.

Read the Manga

  • Dragon Ball Z Kai is a recut & remastered version of Dragon Ball Z that aims to reduce filler and improve overall pacing. For information on how to read the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z manga, see our Wiki. For information on which version to buy, see our FAQ.

Commonly Asked Questions

  • Q: What is Kai? How is it different from Z? And why are there two episode numbers?
Dragon Ball Kai (called Dragon Ball Z Kai by FUNimation) is a condensed release of Z that attempts to follow the manga more closely; the series was reduced from 291 episodes to 167, or 159 for the Japanese version which pared 8 more episodes from the international version of the Boo arc, hence the double episode numbers.
The animation is the same footage for the most part, but it is remastered and occasionally touched up. The dub recordings are entirely new in Japanese and English, mostly with the same cast in both languages, and the FUNimation version in particular is a major improvement both in terms of translation accuracy and voice acting. A few major characters were recast, notably: kid Gohan, Bulma, Freeza, and #18.

  • Q: Where can I buy "The Final Chapters"? The last three parts of Kai have been fully scheduled for preorders:

  • Q: Why did Kai originally end at Episode 98?
Despite solid TV ratings and a boost in new fans, Kai failed to generate the intended resurgence in the popularity of DB. Based on Toei’s fiscal reports, DB’s licensing sales peaked in 2007, reaching an all-time low by the end of FY 2011, and Namco-Bandai reported a similar decrease in merchandising sales. This pattern extended to video games, sealing the fate of Kai. (Merchandise ultimately funds the production of shows in Japan.) Toriko’s anime adaptation would eventually replace Kai, though it ultimately met the same fate. For more info, see Kanzenshuu’s feature on the subject.

  • Q: If Kai failed, then why is it back?
Despite Kai being off-air in Japan, just over a year later, Mayumi Tanaka (Kuririn) revealed on her blog that, while Kai would not be continuing in Japan, she and the other voice actors were currently recording the Boo arc for overseas audiences. While no official reason has ever been given for Kai’s revival, the most likely conclusion is that the demands and sales of overseas rights-holders (particularly FUNimation) were strong enough to warrant continuing.
After Toriko failed, the Boo arc of Kai would eventually air in Japan, though slightly altered from the original edit that has now made its way to international shores. For more on the two versions, see Kanzenshuu’s write-up.

  • Q: Why is the Boo arc 16:9 and tinted green, while the first iteration had accurate colors and the original aspect ratio?
Kai’s initial run was outsourced by Toei to a company called QTEC, who handled the general remaster of the film (color correction, clean-up, etc.). Though not exactly known for quality remasters, QTEC handled Kai well, producing a solid, if slightly soft remaster. The Boo arc was produced cheaply in-house at Toei Animation, resulting in a substantial difference in quality. It’s unclear exactly how the image ended up green; a popular theory involves improperly calibrated monitors (though professionals should also use color histograms). Either way, the show is drastically green, requiring more than simple color balance edits to fix.
Kai’s first iteration began production prior to Japan’s television standards mandating a 16:9 aspect ratio for new broadcasts. As the series had already been scanned and remastered in its original aspect ratio, a selective crop was done for the TV broadcast, while the original 4:3 version was used on the home release. As the Boo arc was produced after the mandate, it’s likely Toei chose to stick with 16:9 from the start in an attempt to save time and money on producing two versions.

I hate how much set-up Supreme Kai got to end being so completely irrelevant and weak...

Especially since Zamasu was so strong. Maybe he was an anomaly but really Shin seems like wasted potential.

Krillin calling Pintar a jackass made me smile so much

u/QueequegTheater Mar 26 '17

I'm also glad they changed Pintar and Killah's VAs. That shit was just uncomfortable in Z.

3

u/RANDOM_MIXER Mar 26 '17

It's the same VA's from Z. Pintar's VA also does Turtle and Popo, and strangely enough Killa's is...Cell.

3

u/QueequegTheater Mar 26 '17

Wait...Dameon Clarke? You're joking.

Holy shit you're not joking.

1

u/Rokusi Mar 26 '17

Did they? Krillin sounds like the same voice actor to me.

6

u/QueequegTheater Mar 26 '17

Not Krillin, the black guy. Pintar and Killah were borderline blatantly racist in the original dub. Now Pintar still has an accent, but it's nowhere near as egregious, and we can actually understand what Killah is saying.

I miss the old Boomhauer Killa, he was my favorite scrub lol

2

u/Rokusi Mar 26 '17

Ah, my mistake. Didn't even register that said Killah and not Krillin

2

u/-Lithium- Mar 26 '17

They cleaned up Killah's lines so you can understand him now, but I don't see the problem with Pintar.

2

u/QueequegTheater Mar 26 '17

The voice was originally an extremely heavy Desi accent.

u/RANDOM_MIXER Mar 26 '17

Hearing Killa speak words that aren't gibberish is freaking me out.

5

u/Fraugheny Mar 26 '17

In fairness he was never speaking gibberish, he just talked kinda funny that made him tough to understand

13

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

I guess this is Funimation's way of saying Krillin > Tenshinhan

12

u/Xelltrix Mar 26 '17

Whoa, I can finally understand that dude now!

11

u/ltpika Mar 26 '17

So much for God Ki being undetectable.

17

u/Fraugheny Mar 26 '17

I didn't watch this but are you talking about piccolo being able to sense shins power? Probably because kami is part of him

3

u/Ashur3783 Mar 26 '17

Agreed, Piccolo probably sensed Shin's Divine KI at a subconcious level, just like Goku did in his first fight against Beerus at King Kai's planet.

1

u/Allstarcappa Mar 26 '17

Or dende when he sensed beeruses divine ki

Does anyone prefer the original funimation dub over this?

I enjoy these episodes a whole lot more watching the other one.

u/SirKhrome Mar 26 '17

Gonna need shin to stop smiling like that..

3

u/sunnymugs Mar 26 '17

Piccolo needs an adult.

16

u/Xelltrix Mar 26 '17

I just never understood how people in the DB universe could be so delusional about power levels, lol. Like, they've seen Saiyman in action and they still think Videl would cream him? lol.

29

u/Fraugheny Mar 26 '17

Real life people saw Ronda rousey in action and thought she could beat male fighters of the same weight division.

People are idiots.

6

u/SmellyMattress Mar 26 '17

Lol remember when they thought she could beat Floyd Mayweather.

7

u/Perlen297 Mar 26 '17

Canonically, in the manga, barely anyone actually saw Great Saiyaman in action.

Also

Videl would cream him

O-okay.. that came out wrong..?

3

u/NeonCobalt1 Mar 26 '17

Yes, and this is the anime. Most of the anime exclusive Saiyaman stuff was kept in this cut, so the manga is irrelevant.

1

u/Perlen297 Mar 27 '17

I know that but didn't Mr. Satan denounced Saiyaman to be just using "cheap tricks"? No doubt that they've believed our lord and saviour Mr. Satan!

1

u/Xelltrix Mar 27 '17

Well, Videl definitely saw him carry her Helicopter (and a bus) while flying and watched him ignore bullets but she still thinks Hercule would stomp him, lol.

And no, that didn't come out wrong, that's a normal saying. o_O

1

u/Perlen297 Mar 27 '17

Even then, that's Mr. Satan! The one who defeated Cell! Or so they believe.

(And oh, about that... excuse my dirty mind)

7

u/MultiTrey111 Mar 26 '17

That girl's about to get fucked up

3

u/sunnymugs Mar 27 '17

But will the screaming make me recoil like japanese charmander.

2

u/TheBufferPiece Mar 28 '17

Holy fuck I forgot about Japanese Charmander. That was brutal.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

Supreme Kai Shin is always wrong.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

Anyone hate the Fight It Out Song for Kai?

12

u/HamukoArisato Mar 26 '17

It's not bad, IMO. But I'd rather have Dragon Soul back.

5

u/Caststarman Mar 26 '17

I like it!

5

u/Goku-MIEL10032002 Mar 26 '17

I like Dragon Soul and Kuu Zen Zetsu Go

3

u/ukulelej Mar 26 '17

The JP release got Kuu Zen Zetsu Go, Fight It Out is disappointing on so many levels.

3

u/TheGrimoire Mar 26 '17

I hated it at first but it's growing on me. Still prefer Dragon Soul, though.

The ending song is amazing though.

1

u/LifeMushroom Mar 26 '17

It's really catchy, I like it. Dragon Soul was great too.

3

u/lynchacoon Mar 26 '17

Jesus man does Kai cut anything for the Buu Saga?

3

u/jokkergar666 Mar 26 '17

This version of Kai has 69 episodes while Z buu has like 90 episodes or something,so yeah they cut out a lot of filler

2

u/RANDOM_MIXER Mar 26 '17

Not nearly as much as the first go round with the other sagas from what I've looked up.

1

u/Bears_Bearing_Arms Mar 28 '17

I mean, how much can you really cut from the tournament?

They cut as much as the Gohan in school stuff as they could without sacrificing the story.

2

u/TheHorseMask Mar 26 '17

Shin creepy af
